In need of advice regarding Mbp15

Hi ! I have never owned a mac before so I'm quite noob at this. I am however planning on getting the mbp15 i7 with the 7200 rpm hdd and ~1600x resolution screen. I am hardcore windows user and I am going to purchase the mbp with the thought of installing windows 7 on it. I am going to be using windows for games (wow / cod ) CAD and some programming.
I have been reading around about windows 7 on macs and there apparently a few problems out there. My questions would be:
1. What problems would I encounter if I tried to install Windows 7 on my mbp ? (USB slowness / lacking drivers ? ). I need my laptop for uni work and it would really suck to be stuck in osx without being able to use the windows apps that i need.
2. Is it better to use bootcamp and a dual OS ( osx + win7 ) or have just a clean install of windows 7 without bootcamp and osx. I would probably use osx casually anyway.

Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.

Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard or Snow Leopard to get it.
Using Boot Camp there are no problems. Using VM software results in some loss of performance. Drivers for dual booting are provided with the OS installer disc.

The level of granularity of a WBS depends on the practicality of planning and collecting accurate cost for each one of the individual tasks. This may also depend on the company culture, the team discipline, and customer or management control requirements.

Need Expert Advice regarding oracle and java objects

In our project, we are submitting data for many screens at a time. Some screens will have a list of records to be submitted. There is also some hierarchy among the data up to 4 levels.
In such a scenario, we need to know the best way to exchange data between Oracle and Java. Currently java holds the data as objects, where each object may contain an array of next level of objects in it.
Is it best approach to pass the entire data with hierarchy to Oracle using nested table approach and internally oracle handling the data? Is there any other way to do this?
Also in some scenarios we need to pass the entire information for all the screens in one shot with the hierarchy. So we need to know a solution for that also. Could you please help us in this regard?

Depending on your Mac, you might not want to upgrade to OS X 10.7 or 10.8 as it will not run the PowerPC based software your currently using costing a bundle to replace it all, also they will slow down your machine if it's not a more recent issue. You don't want to upgrade OS X without AppleCare defending your possibly bricked logicboard that's for sure.
Filevault encrypts the boot drive, however in doing so makes it near impossible to fix if you have a software issue and need to recover files directly or by using specialty software. Also it robs the machine of performance even more than the Lions do. So you will really need a SSD to work best with 10.7/10.8 and Filevault, then it has to be freshly installed. Filevault needs 50% free space on the boot drive, then it's going to write to the slower 50% half of the hard drive where performance is terrible compared to the first 50%.
Also Filevault is cracked under certain conditions, and if someone gets their hands on the machine (like the law) and knows what they are doing.
If you take your Filevaulted machine to Apple to fix, they are going to require the password to fix the machine obviously.
Software based encryption is vulnerable, you might want to instead place your sensitive data on external self-encrypting hardware that doesn't rely upon software or computer hacks/bypasses (ike freezing the RAM) to get to it.

I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.

Generally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.

Need conceptual advice for 16:9/4:3 menus

Hi,
First off I should say that I am undertaking my most ambitious DVD project to date and I am in well over my head. I want to order a book(s) and would appreciate any advice regarding which book(s) might best deal with the type of issues I am about to explain. BTW I am still using DVD Studio Pro 2.
So here it is:
I have a 16:9 feature and 16:9 menus. My issue is their appearance in 4:3.
When displayed on a 4:3 monitor, I want the 16:9 menus cropped to full frame (pan and scan) and the feature to play 4:3 letterboxed. Since it seems like there might be some counter-intuitive aspects to this process, some general conceptual guidance on the authoring and menu design would be great. I am hoping that the authoring can be done with this sort of “mix and match” way and not pan and scan OR forced letter box for both menus AND video. Here is what I am sussing out so far:
1) I should set “force to pan and scan” in the disc inspector. I am assuming that this setting is ONLY for the menus (as they appear on 4:3). And if I am forcing a pan and scan crop of the menus I can just use the same overlay file for both 16:9 and 4:3. I just need to make sure my 16:9 menus are visible and can function once cropped to 4:3.
2) Regarding the video tracks: It looks like I might have to put the feature on two different tracks, one designated to play 4:3 and the other to play 16:9 letterbox in the track inspector? (why it is not labeled 4:3 letterbox and 16:9 is still a mystery to me). And it is at this point (that soon!) that things start to get cloudy. Because suddenly it seems that if I do that, I need two separate menus (rather than the 16:9 doubling as the 4:3), a16:9 one to point to the 16:9 video track and the 4:3 to point to the 4:3 letterboxed video track. Ideally a 16:9 the menu would point to track 1 and it would play 16:9, and when watching a 4:3 the 16:9 menu would automatically crop to 4:3 letterbox and point to track 1 which would then play 4:3 letterbox. Is that just some crazy dream or can it really work like that? So what is the story here?
3) If I am forced to use two separate menus, a whole other series of questions are raised. But I won’t go there just yet.
So you can easily see that I really have little idea of what I am doing in this regard and am in need of some expert advice. Thanks in advance.

If you are using DVD Stuido Pro 2 Force to Pan and Scan doesn't work. Not sure if it works in later version of DVD-SP (Don't think it did in V3 and not sure about V4). We do quite a few widescreen 16:9 movies and I'd do it like this: If you feature is 16:9 set that to 16:9 Letterbox. On the Disc Properties (i.e. click on the disc at the uppermost part of the disc layout set the Menus to Force to letterbox. Create your menus in 16:9 and set them to 16:9 Letterbox.
That way when the disc is played on a widescreen set the menus and track will display as widescreen (as they should) and when played on a 4:3 set they display with Letterbox - apart from the fact that the Force Pan and Scan doesn'y work properly (the highlights on your menus won't line up properly), I personally think this is preferable... especially when it comes to the movie itself. When a movie is Pan and Scanned on broadcast tv (which happens less and less these days) the film's action is "tracked" so that the most important info is displayed on screen and Pan and Scan Vectors are created. If you set your track so that it displays as 4:3 on a 4:3 set then basically you will only see the centre of the screen/action. Why would you want that? I thiunk most people with 4:3 sets are used to seeing widescreen letterboxed movies these days.

How to do the database look up???
XI inserts data in to staging table with the status new.
Scenario 2
JDBC to JDBC
XI selects the data from staging table.
XI maps the data from staging table to the Actual table.
XI inserts data in to the Actual Table and sends the status to SAP Processed successfully
If it fails in this mapping it needs to send the status as Error with the message to SAP
I want to do this as single scenario using BPM and I want to send status to SAP once the data is successfully loaded in to the actual table or it fails in mapping at any stage.
Need expertise advice to do this and how to do the database look up?

Business Delegate pattern - need some advice

Hi. First let me apologize for the long post. I could see no other way. I�m building a system that quite large and I need some advice. The system is a type of transaction system, let�s suppose a shopping cart. I�m using struts taglibs and tiles for presentation, struts proper for controller, and POJOs for business logic. Also I�m using OJB for my data tier.
Now I�ve been reading Pro Jakarta Struts (Apress), which BTW is a recommended read to anyone with novice experience in struts and related technologies. I�ve assimilated most of the techniques and patterns described in the book, and most of them make sense to me. However, I�ve hit a snag while reading the Business Delegate and Service Locator patterns.
The way I had though of building my application before reading the book, was to have a wrapper class, such as the following:

2) I store a reference to the wrapper class (ShoppingCart) in the ServletContext so I can grab it from my Action classes. What do you think of this approach?
3) How many BDs should an application contain. In my case I use just one. What is the advantage of using more?
4) I create my own session tokens in case I ever want to use to business code in a non-web applications where sessions are not available readily. This brings about the problem that I can't pass the interfaces directly to the Action classes because the login session needs to be checked before any calls to services. So all methods include a sessionToken parameter which I use to check the session. This way, if I want to expose some of the services through web services, I can still use a login. What do you think of this approach.
5) Any other remarks are very welcome...
I really need help with this from an experienced programmer. Most things I can handle on my own but with this type of design issue, books just don't cut it. I need experience. I would really apreciate some feedback.

How to make an app auto relaunch if it quits - need some advice....

It gives instructions using a program called "Lingon", but this appears to be an earlier version, because the latest version I've downloaded for Leopard seems to have different options. Despite this I've tried to work around the instructions but am failing it appears.
I am not experienced in this area and would appreciate someone giving me some pointers int he right direction, as I believe this potentially a simple thing to do.
In Lingon you have 3 main windows:
In Window 1 I have: "com.jamiemartin.C4DServerLauncher"
In Window 2 I have: "/Applications/MAXON/CINEMA\ 4D\ R9/C4D\ Server"
In Window 3 I have: "Run it every 1 minute"
The reson I have selected "Run it every 1 minute" in section 3 is that I have multipled crash logs for the C4D Server app, so don't know which one to select for the program to recognise the file being modified (when it unexpectedly quits) as is in the original instructions. I assumed this would be a workaround?
Also, what do I do after I have saved this? Do I have to leave Lingon open for it to work, or has it saved this script somewhere?
So, I am probably way off the mark, but if anyone can put me back on track I'd greaty appreciate it.

And yes, you're right about the possibility of it being the frontmost app every minute being potentially annoying! Hadn't considered that. I'm not sure how the logs are filed. I assumed that the author of that macworld article checked it out and the crash logs are appended to a fixed file. if a new log file is created every time this will of course not work. the alternative is to have the launch daemon watch the whole crash reporter folder instead of a single file. this way the application in question will launch every time ANY application crashes but that seems like an acceptable workaround.
Also, I notice the instructions say that you need to go deeper than selecting just the app itself, but delve into the package contents, but on this version of Lingon I don't have that option.
yes it does and you have to do as the article says. in fact this has nothing to do with Lingon at all. we are talking about the application you are watching not Lingon. control-click on the application you are watching and select "show package contents". go to Contents->Mac OS and drag the unix executable file to filed 2 in Lingon.
Is this the root of the problem for it not working for me?

in ~/Library/LaunchAgents. ~ means your home directory.

I need your advice.....
What I have:
- 2 servers (Windows 2008 R2 64bit) .. planned as Application Servers
- Oracle 11g Database installed in a server
- forms (.fmx) , reports (.rdf) , compiled using Oracle 10g DS R2
- Oracle 10g Developer Suit R2
What I want:
- Install Oracle Application Server in the 2 servers available (Windows 2008 R2)
- make sure all (.fmx & .rdf) will work im these 2 servers
- take advantage of the powerful servers
What I did:
- Install Oracle 10g AS R2 in both servers
- configure webcache balance
What I faced:
- both servers worked fine except:
- (.fmx) files cannot be cached
- slow while opening (.fmx) files
- AGAIN, SLOW
ADVICE??
- Do I need to continue using this installation OR
- Is there any better installation & configuration that will help get (What I want:)

The default installation is self tuned to handle a load of approximately 200 users(it depends on network as well as ur DB)
I knew for sure what makes my server slow, that is because of background images in fmb & fmx files. when I removed them it became fast enough.
In my environment,i used to staore all this images in gif format(images size max would be 50kb)then store all these images in a jar file and load this jar file through archive_jini(Formsweb.cfg)

After user loggs in, I am getting locale from db and storing it inside userSession along with userLogin. Inside jsp using <fmt> tag to display locale based resource property.

Hi I Am a digital textile designer and planning to buy my first retina macbook pro. I need expert advice, which model should i buy 15 inch base model or with dedicated graphics card. i will use macbook for digital designing on Adobe photoshop and multi tasking. so now really confused is intel iris pro graphics will handle heavy files on photoshop or Nvidia GT750 m will good for heavy work. I am working on very large resolution file like 10 to 15k in resolution approx 1 GB in file size with lot of filters is being use while designing. Which model will handle above task well and last longer.

You may be confusing the quad core CPU with the Graphics processor.
It should have no difficulty in running Adobe Photoshop.

In need of advice/help.

I am having some serious issues with my MacBook.
First, I think it is overheating. I can not run my computer for longer then an hour without it getting hot. My keyboard is getting hot along with my charger. I am not sure if this is a normal MacBook thing but it is slowing down my computer is so many ways.
Another thing is I cannot run more then one application at a time. I am a graphic design major and I need to be able to run Adobe CS2 programs. For example, Say I am running In-Design and I need to make a fix in Photoshop, In-Design will quit. I have tried so many things to fix this but nothing works.
I have alot of problems of running Safari also. I am very dissapointed and frustrated and I need some advice.
Please. I have been having issues for awhile and thought it was just how these computers run, but I think I was mistaken. This is my first Apple computer.

Stacey, I pointed you to an app called Temperature Monitor that will give an accurate temperature reading of your MacBook.
Never EVER use your MacBook on a pillow or a blanket that can block airflow. I have no doubt that is adding to the problem.
Download and install the firmware updates as well as Temperature Monitor found HERE. That way we can know what temps we are talking about. There is no way to tell if they are high if you cannot give us a reading.

Need Network Advice: Multiple IP numbers.

Hello I need some advice on setting up my office's network. I have a small amount of network knowledge, mostly just setting up my home networks and our offices simple existing network. Right now we have Verizon internet. The network looks like this -
1 static IP -> Verizon Modem/Router -> 24port gig switch -> wired to 8 offices -> connected to 8 computers.
We are canceling Verizon and getting Comcast with 5 IP addresses. Our goal is to continue using a network like we have, but add a server on the side for clients and remote employees to drop files. We have 2 mac mini's ready for the task of being servers with OSX Tiger on them. I would like to set one or both of them up as FTP servers, so we can hand out login/pass info and people can ftp into them to drop stuff or pick stuff up.
Anyone have any advice for how to setup a network with multiple IP addresses? Do I need more than 1 router? Which router is best for Mac, because we will need a new one to replace verizons. Any advice on where I can find information on setting up the FTP server on our mac mini with Tiger? I've looked around, but I don't think the sites I found were using Tiger, menus weren't exact and I couldn't get it to work.

You don't need a "Gigabit router". It's way, way overkill (and $$$$$$) for your network.
The Comcast link is going to max out at about 15-20mpbs, so any router with 100mpbs links is going to be more than sufficient.
As it happens, I wouldn't get a router anyway. Comcast are going to provide you with a router (they need to in order to terminate the RG-58 cable connection they drop and provide an ethernet port (that ethernet port, BTW, will be 100base-T).
What you really need is a firewall. One that can handle multiple public IP addresses and allow specific incoming traffic (e.g. the FTP servers).
I would recommend something from NetScreen. You may be able to pick up one of their NetScreen 5GTs pretty cheap now they're end of life (I have several of these around my network, including one in the exact same configuration you're talking about here). Failing that the SSG-5 would be sufficient.
They also have the advantage of being able to run as a VPN endpoint should you need that functionality.
At the end of the day your network topology would look something like:
Comcast router -> (NetScreen) Firewall -> Switch -> Clients
All the clients will connect to the switch and can talk amongst themselves at gigabit speeds. Any internet traffic would pass from the switch to the firewall and out to the big bad world.
