In need of general advice.

Hello, as a starving graphic designer I got drafted by a company. I have until early january to make them a huge catalogue(180-200 pages), I know my way around indesign, but I havent done anything as huge, I`ve done 10-+ page catalogues, and this thing kinda scares me, but I really need this job. So, any advice will be hugely appreciated. I will be doing page breakes, as they said, so any advice on that?

If you post some information about how you're getting the content delivered to you (file format, structure, etc.) we can make some suggestion about how to best flow it into InDesign to make your job less hairy. Also,

Here's a word you'll want to repeat over and over until it is burned into your dreams: STYLES. Use styles for EVERYTHING. Edit a style and the catalog will update, and trust me, some manager type will want to make some "minor" change like a font or adding a shadow to images, and then change his mind. Saving versions as you go along is a good idea, too. Sometimes much easier to go back to an earlier version than to make changes in what you have now.
Another useful concept: Backup. Keep a backup copy on a safe external location, preferably not on a network server. Hopefully you won't need it, but we get posts here all the time about "I saved my file on Friday, and now it won't open. What do I do?" More often than not these are files stored on a network and they are a total loss.
If the readership here was younger and more annoying, I'd just empty-quote Peter's post 10 times in a row.

  • Russian and Chinese Flash movies - general advice needed please

    Hi all -
    This is a plea for some general 'jumping off' advice. I am an experienced Flash developer but now have a request to convert an existing xml-fed movie into both Russian and Chinese. I speak neither of these languages so we have had the content of the movie translated by a professional translation service.
    The movie contains both png/jpgs with embedded text - created in Fireworks and also (for the bulk of the content) external xml files. I still need to be able to develop in an English environment - so purchasing a full version of Flash/Fireworks in Russian/Chinese would be folly. How should I go about this? If it is a matter of fonts - where should I get them from? And are there any considerations to be met with regards the xml files? Basically, I would really appreciate some general advice on this subject as it is completely new ground for me.
    Much obliged,
    Hugh

    Thank you. Having the airports all in proximity was the key and, of course, I eventually found the same advice in an apple help file. I set the new AExtreme up as WDS main with an ethernet disk for backups and music. An old AExtreme as WDS remote serves the Cube by ethernet and a usb printer. An AExpress as WDS remote serves one stereo. The other AExpress is WDS relay serving another stereo and helping the network reach the office where the last old AExtreme is WDS remote with another USB printer. The 3 mac laptops are happy. I have yet to try any PCs.

  • HFM- General Advice

    Hi guys,
    I'm new to HFM and I'm starting to work in a project. I'd like to know if you have any general advice you could share about two topics.
    1. Initial stage. Do you have any question list you usually apply to customers to evaluate their applications? Is there any questions guide we should follow? Which are the main questions we should ask if the client does not have a HFM application?
    2. Which advice would you give to a consultant starting to work in a support project (let's say, the client has already a HFM application)?
    3. Accounts: these are part of my current nightmares. I know how to build an account in the classic way (HFM client). But how do you build the accounts in EPMA? Do you usually do that one by one? Even if there are more thant 2000 accounts?
    I know these are silly questions, buy I do not have any HFM experience. And I was given a quick and basic training before starting to work in a project.
    I really appreciate any advice you could give me.
    Thank you!
    Guy

    Hi,
    1. Initial stage. Do you have any question list you usually apply to customers to evaluate their applications? Is there any questions guide we should follow? Which are the main questions we should ask if the client does not have a HFM application?
    ** First of all as far as I know there is no guide for this,
    In Initial stage you need to understand the business flow, roles of different users, level of their consolidation and calculations. Apart from this, U need to find out that How they capture the data across entities, cost centers,etc.. this will help you to decide the dimensionality to be used for application.
    Moreover, Be curious and ask as many questions as you can from client, this is the best time when U can get every minute details for understanding
    2. Which advice would you give to a consultant starting to work in a support project (let's say, the client has already a HFM application)?
    In this case the most important thing is to get the Knowledge of application correctly whether it is from KT or from docs. Don't just take the knowledge on paper and verbally, But it is very important to check it with your hands, it will clear your confusions straight away and mainly it will freeze ur understanding.
    Be curious and ask as many questions as you can for application working.
    Get the handover of documents properly and take a track of work done in past or changes done before joining support.
    Keep track of the montly activities properly and process to be followed to work at Support.
    3. Accounts: these are part of my current nightmares. I know how to build an account in the classic way (HFM client). But how do you build the accounts in EPMA? Do you usually do that one by one? Even if there are more thant 2000 accounts?
    ** Yes, multiple members can be added to EPMA via flat files and through interface tables.
    This is a link for Flat File:
    http://thetravelingconsultant2.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/epma-101-loading-dim-members-via-flat-file.pdf
    This is admin guide for EPMA:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epma_admin.pdf
    As you are new you need to go through these files and specially admin guide which will give you the way to work on EPMA and what are the capabilities of EPMA.
    I Hope this is what you were looking for.
    Please tag it as Answer/Helpful if you find it useful.

  • IMovie 6 and general advice

    Amateur iMovie user (but not bad at it!), some general advice requested...
    1. Is iMovie HD 6 worth buying (seems like there's a bit of grief associated with it), or can you get the same effects and titles etc with a 3-D party plugin to iMovie 5? I only bought 5 six months ago - I'm a bit behind the times...
    2. Is it worth just saving up and buying, say, Final Cut HD Express or something and forgetting iMovie altogether?
    3. Or would you forget about all the software upgrades, save up and buy an HD camera?
    Cheers
    Perry

    Perry,
    The questions you ask are good ones. But I don't think others can answer them for you.
    What kind of movies do you make and how often?
    Have you looked at the new features in iMovie HD 6? You can see some of them highlighted in the right column of this page.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/
    Remember too that iLife '06 is more than just iMovie. How much do you use the other iApps? The new iWeb is cool (almost worth the cost of the upgrade by itself - to me at least) as are the upgrades to iPhoto and GarageBand.
    The new version of GarageBand allows you to work on the audio track of your iMovie projects. To me that's the best new feature of iMovie and it's not even really a feature of iMovie!
    Final Cut Express HD is the next step if you feel like you can't do what you are trying to do with iMovie. Do you feel like you've outgrown iMovie? FCE is great software but it's got a learning curve.
    Finally, I'd say hold off on the HD camera for now. The prices will continue to drop over the next few years and most people don't even have an HD television yet. Do you? If not, I say get the HD television first.

  • Hi, I need help and advice. Basically me and my ex partner both had iphones and synced it with the same computer under the same ID. We split i have a new laptop and now it keeps asking for the old ID or it'll erase my apps bought on theold account.

    Hi, I need help and advice. Basically me and my ex partner both had iphones and synced it with the same computer under the same ID. We split up and now im trying to get all my apps and info onto my new laptop with a new account but it keeps asking me for the old apple ID which she is still using and she changed the password. i tried backing it up but still nohing. When i try to back up purchased items being apps etc its keeps asking for the old one. help

    See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. But you'll still need the password.
    Once you have the computer authorized to use the account she could change the password again to stop you buying apps on her card (assuming it's not on yours!). It would lock you out of upgrading them too but they should work unless she uses the deathorize all feature.
    It depends on how amicable the split is...

  • Need a help / advice & guidance whether to switch on my Career in SAP-PM from core industries after spending my 09 years of experience in Core field that to in Maintenance.

    Hello Adviser /expert,
    Need a help / advice & guidance whether to switch on my Career in SAP-PM from core industries after spending my 09 years of experience in Core field that to in Maintenance.
    As now i m thinking to do SAP-PM certified course from authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
    So any one can suggest authorized SAP partner in India that to Pune.
    My introduction (About myself): - I had done my Diploma in Mechanical and had total 09 years of experience in Mechanical Maintenance field that to in different manufacturing company such as Steel, Auto Ancillary & Cotton plant.
    Whether its right decision to change my career from Core sector to SAP-PM..??
    Is there very good scope in SAP-Pm for me after 09 years of Core Maintenance field..???
    Guide me
    Warm Regard
    Ravin

    Ravindra,
    SAP PM is very niche Module, very in demand module, at the same time, being niche, getting into it and getting 1 implementation is also difficult.
    your decision of joining SAP authorized training is the best option, as a certified consultant, you have more chances to get a break as fresher and you can continue working on it, else it would waste of your intellectual energy.
    you just search sap.com training or email them or chat with them, they will give u the training center details,
    but very less training classes are available. Try you will get lucky soon

  • Parallels general advice

    I have a 2011 Mac Mini and I'm about to purchase a MacBookPro and wanted to be able to run some of my work related Windows based software on the Mac's using Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac software. Both Macs will be running Mountain Lion and I would be installing Windows 7 Home Premium.  I haven't installed Parallels yet and was looking for some general advice or precaustions that anyone might have relating to the installation and use of the software and the various ways of viewing/accessing the Windows side.
    Any thoughts or advice is appreciated, thank you.

    Thank you for the informative replies. This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. A bit more information about my Mac Mini, I do have 8GB of RAM and I recently replaced the original HDD with a 128GB Corsair Force GS SSD that has the OS and all applications running on it. I use a Firewire 800 connected G Tech HDD and Netgear Ultra 4 Plus NAS for file storage.
    The main purpose for Parallels for me would be when I get the MacBookPro. I am an audio video integrator and do home control programming, etc. and the programming software is not available in Mac versions. I actually have a dedicated custom built desktop Windows 7 PC but that is my CD ripping, video conversion/editing, music playing machine that I don't want to "infect" with any software that is not related to the above mentioned functions. I like working in the Mac environment for my daily mail, MS Office, etc. and most of my clients use Macs so it helps me stay current with what they are using. That is why I would like to be able to run my control programming software on the Mac Mini using Parallels. I thought it would be nice to be able to do the programming on the Mac Mini with the 24" monitor then just bring it along to the job site on the MacBookPro that I'm about to buy (my 9 uear old Dell laptop I was using is on its last leg!).
    I did look through Getting Started/User Guide from Parallels web site and will check out the Parallels Mac Forum to prepare.
    Just so I understand how Parallels works, it apparently does not create a separate partition for Windows but rather runs Windows side by side with my Mac OSX within the same partition? Is this a correct assumption? Also, if I have drives like the above mentioned G Tech that are formated for Mac OSX will I be able to see and access those drives from the Windows side running on Parallels?
    Thanks again for the great information.

  • JT400 General Advice Please

    I am looking at developing some code to access the AS/400 via program calls. What I am looking for is a bit of general advice on a couple of items: -
    1. Connection Pooling. Seems like a good idea. Are there any pitfalls / traps that I should be aware of in your experience.
    2. Once I have the data I was thinking of storing it in Hashtables for ease of retrieval. Are there any better ways of storing the information for improved speed / system resources.
    TIA
    Richard

    HI
    When you mean accessing AS/400 via program calls , what programs do you really mean
    You can access AS/400 data using the JDBC connection like you do against any other database, you can also make use of the access classes in the AS/400 tool box API to invoke native programs in 400 which can return data to your Java program.
    I dont think there is any pitfalls using connection pooling , it can only improve the speed of your applications
    How much data are you thinking about storing in HAshtable ,If you are thinking about storing small amount of information for faster retrieval , that is fine.
    But you cannot store your entire data in hashtable, there is no direct way of increasing performance like that.
    Hope this helps

  • Need an expert advice in Implementing continuous delivery across environments

    Hi All,
    I need an expert advice/solution in implementing continuous delivery in our project. (PF Screenshot)
    Deployment goes like this..
    Dev checks in -> TFS Builds - > RM Invokes -> using PS/DSC -> Copies the binaries to DIT environemnt's IIS virtual dir -> Manual replacement of Web.config files (since we have many environments)- > App runs
    PS/DSC does following things : Copies binaries using X copy , Uploads SP excel reports , Executing Dacpac scripts etc ..
    Now the chanllenge earlier faced was wrt Web.Config files was, for every DIT environment many configurations, conn strings would change. In order to overcome this , Implemented Web.config transformations( like Web.DIT1.Config .... Web.DIT6.config in my solution
    explorer.
    Added a custom MSBuild script in my .csproj file and before triggerig the build defination I 'd change in Process tab- > Basic - > Configuration = DIT1 (based on requirement) and triggers . )
    It perfectly deploys to the DIT 1 without manually replacing WEb.config files.
    1) Now the blocker for me, Can we achieve this without Web.config transformations ? Since I don't want to expose the sensitive date in config files is there any way to implementing the same ?
    2) I wanted to have continuous deployments from DIT to SIT and from SIT to UAT etc , How can we achevive the same ?
       I m planning to implement the same with web.config tokenizing in RM?
    Looking for some expert advice in achieving the same?
    Many Thanks ,
    Abraham Dhanyaraj

    HI Abraham,
    Instead of having web config transformations to set config values for each environment do the following.
    1. Have one transformation config say for example web.release.config which will contain tokens understood by RM (starting and ending with double underscore) for each config value.
    <log4net>
    <appender name="FileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender">
    <file value="__log4netLogFile__" xdt:Transform="Replace" />
    </appender>
    </log4net>
    <ClientsSection>
    <Clients xdt:Transform="Replace">
    <add Id="__ClientId1__" Secret="__SecretCode1__" RedirectUrl="__RedirectUrl1__"></add>
    <add Id="__ClientId2__" Secret="__SecretCode2__" RedirectUrl="__RedirectUrl2__"></add>
    </Clients>
    </ClientsSection>
    <appSettings xdt:Transform="Replace">
    <add key="MinCaps" value="2" />
    <add key="MinSymbols" value="1" />
    <add key="MinNumerics" value="1" />
    <add key="MinLength" value="6" />
    <add key="MaxLength" value="" />
    <add key="webpages:Version" value="3.0.0.0" />
    <add key="webpages:Enabled" value="false" />
    <add key="PreserveLoginUrl" value="true" />
    <add key="ClientValidationEnabled" value="true" />
    <add key="UnobtrusiveJavaScriptEnabled" value="true" />
    <add key="WebPortalName" value="__WebPortalName__" />
    <add key="TimeZoneFrom" value="Pacific Standard Time"/>
    <add key="TimeZoneTo" value="Mountain Standard Time"/>
    </appSettings>
    The TFS builds can generate output with above formatted configs with web config transformation.
    2. Then in RM server templates change the config files to have values depending on the environment. You can do this using a custom deployment component or default xcopy deployment component to set parameters.
    3. Then in the release template set the config values.
    Cheers!

  • Need general advice on package selection regarding java

    Hi,
    I have done a course in programming and covered some of the many areas of java ..... Since finishing that course I have been on and off java . I have used jbuilder9 and also briefly used some other IDEs. Anyway in the past I have done some simplistic graphics programming such as a ball bouncing across the screen. The thing is im planning on writing a small snooker or pool game , Im really determined and I want it to be a structured learning experience ....where Im using objects,interfaces and such. The thing is ....in college the graphical aspects of a program never stretched much beyond using what is provided by the jbuilder IDE. What I want to do is build a pool game but use my own classes and interfaces where appropriate and I was wandering what the best way to do it would be? .....Its a kind of general question so I will try and elaborate....Im willing to get into the ins and outs of understanding the code its just that Im not so sure jbuilder is the correct software to use for this kind of thing, especially with the fact that I want my code to 100% be my own .....e.g NO or very little auto generated stuff. Doing it this way will probably be inefficient but I feel I will grasp javas many complexities by having less "Bells & Whistles" so to speak :-) .....I want to do everything from creating an initial background frame to coding a class ball for the pool balls and somehow dealing with all the angles that a ball can be hit from.
    Is there any sites anyone could recommend that cover the coding of a java game from scratch ......and also uses the functionality of java by immplementing interfaces , classes and explaining there purpose as they go?
    Also a site with an install guide for whatever software is recommended would be great :-)
    I was going to use netbeans 4.0 buy when I click for documentation on an error it says something about "cannot find javadoc documentation. check platform manager to make sure the documentation is added" .......you see I am used to being able to click on an error and get a whole wealth of information about that error or relevant tutorials(such as in jbuilder.....I want good instant error documentation like this).
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.......also bearing in mind that I want to be able to use my own code without having to understand an ide inside out.......although I want to use one all the same .....:-)

    Also a site with an install guide for whatever

There are several to meet your tastes and preferences, i always recomend try a few and see what you like. For a list of IDE's do a search in this forum, the topic comes up several times a year.

  • Some general advice needed please

    Until today my network was DSL, AE802.11g with ethernet external drive and usb printer, a cube and printer on a remote AE802.11g and an express for the stereo. I had 3 laptops connecting except from one room that I want to move a printer to and use as an office. So I bought some more kit to extend the network.
    A new AE802.11n and another express arrived today. Because the house is big with thick walls I think I need at least one airport set up as a relay rather than remote. After reading the discussions I managed to get the new AE set up and connected to the DSL. but, I seldom get more than 1 or 2 AE or expresses show up in airport utility making it hard to set them to join the network which seems to keep disappearing. The most remote AE is near one of the expresses but does not see the network.
    Any suggestions for the optimal settings for each device? And what order should I set them up in?

  • General Advice Needed

    Hello all,
    I have a 15" Macbook Pro (Version 10.6.3) running Snow Leopard purchased in September 2008. I has so many issues and I would like to know what my prognosis is.
    First of all, I have one of the Macbook Pro's with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT that I've read so much about. I believe (or rather, hope) that it is this causing at least some of my issues.
    I won't detail every problem because I don't want to waste your time. I'm am not looking for 'fix' details as I'e tried everything. I seek advice as to what to do next.
    Firstly: Only a few days after purchase, my laptop would continually crash and shut itself down, refusing to restart for 24 hours+. I didn't understand what the problem was so I took it to an Apple Genius who simply told me what programs were running what it crashed. Deleting them all (including BootCamp) my laptop worked again, for over a year when the issue started happening again. My computer would shut down randomly and not restart for a long time.
    Is this due to the NVIDIA issue? My nearest Apple store is a long drive away and having been let down before, I don't want to go all of that way for nothing. If I'm honest, I don't trust them, either. I've heard stories of people being told there's nothing wrong with their computer multiple times before a Genius would finally admit fault. I'm also afraid that the tech will take my laptop, find an 'unrelated issue' and charge for £200+ for a fix that I didn't specifically ask for (Apple have promised free warranty for those with the NVIDIA issue.)
    I've tried my level best to find out exactly what the problem is, but I'm not very technical minded. I hear that the NVIDIA chip causes mis-shaping of the Macbook case? (which mine has, on its right hand side, near the firewire etc ports.) Does it affect iSight, because that, too, has inexplicably stopped working over the last few days, as well as a number of other things.
    Basically, does it sound to you like I'm owed a repair or not? This issue has been troubling me for such a long time and I've had such a hard time trying to get it fixed that I'm sapped of all of my spirit. After nearly two nears of ownership, my laptop DOES have some general wear and tear which is my fault and I don't have a problem with, but considering my issues first started DAYS after I made my purchase and I TRIED to get it fixed then, surely, it must be an inbuilt problem?
    Please help me make sense of my next step. Is NVIDIA my problem? Am I entitled to a free fix?
    Thank you for your time and advice. I await response with eager ears.
    Nick

    Hello. I ran the hardware test that you recommended and came back with the follow error.
    With only a small amount of research, I have discovered that this is a graphics card issue: specifically, the NVIDIA one as highlighted in the original post.
    Now I know for certain I have a faulty NVIDIA card, I'm sure Apple will do the repair for me (although I still hear stories).
    I was just wondering if there are any other symptoms to this issue? Is this why my laptop has overheated and mis-shapen? Is this why my iSight won't work? Please arm me with as much information as you can give, so I know what to expect/ask from them.
    Thank you once again for your time and thank you a brody for your extremely helpful tip - you've made me a content man.

  • If SharePoint is good tool for a "customer portal" (general advice needed)?

    Hello, I'm looking for the best solution for my needs and consider SharePont. Please have a look.
    I'm in B2B business and results of my work are files (presentation, pdf, video etc). All files are grouped by "projects". Every project has at least name, number and date. I have not so much customers, let say, 50 and one hundred projects a month
    total.
    What I need is that my customers could log into some web-site with nice interface, find project by name, date or number and download files from the project.
    Additionally, we use in-house .Net/SQL developed software for operations. I also need to incorporate some data from SQL (like project progress in %%) to the project page.
    Could you point me out if SharePoint is a good solution for this task and how to get started?

    Nikriaz,
    As I understand that you want your client to download files and you want to update project status from sql data.
    If so, then SharePoint foundation will work for you. It has user login, Document management, search, default workflow and web part functionality inbuilt.
    You may need to provision authentication to your client, for their login using passport/live/Hotmail account or so.
    On the other side, if you move to office 365(E1/E2) then passport authentication already taken care of and all functionality will be there except project status data sync with sql unless use enterprise licence
    with BCS.
    Hope these information will help you.
    Please 'propose as answer' if it helped you, also 'vote helpful' if you like this reply.

  • General advice on using SCCM (SMS) to deploy SAPGUI

    I was curious for anyone's opinion on the use of Microsoft's SCCM tool for deploying SAPGUI.  At our organization, I am hoping to take advantage of this capability so that the SAP technical team is not "too" involved in the day-to-day deployment activities.
    Some specific questions:
    1. The only way to do this is to create an SAP installation server so that you can then create the single installation package (and then hand it over to SCCM)?
    2. Assuming I am correct on #1, to patch the GUI, youu2019d have to patch the installation server and create a new installation package and let SCCM advertise it out (i.e. not make use of any of the SAP techniques (e.g. the new automatic workstation updated).
    3. How have you managed the distribution/update of files (saplogon to the u2018newu2019 location, services, etc) on the PCs --- via the package scripting capability of the SAP installer (OSS 1035560)?  I had the idea to request this capability of the SCCM team as well!
    Thanks for any input!

    We have multiple agencies which have thier own method of deploying out to their end users.  Mostly through SMS (or whatever it is called now a days) but that is up to the agencies requirements.
    Here I will elaborate on your questions and divulge a little of our situation.
    1 - Correct.  Create a Installation server and build the package.  From that package it can be put into a SMS package and deployed. (we use this method)
    2 - Yes and also.  Yes, you can update the Installation server and re-create your package with the updated patch included.  I believe you would also need to remove the SAP GUI to re-install the new with the updated information.  My advice would be to  utilize SMS to push just the patch from SAP to your end users which will update the existing machines with the already installed SAP GUI. (We use this method)
    3 - We utilize the variable SAPLOGON_INI_FILE which you can point the machine to an area of your choice to where your saplogon.ini file is located.
    Our use:
    We use both the installation server as well as Wise Studio for our package.  Installation server creates the SAP GUI deployment.  Wise Studio comes in and allows us to set variables and allows us to have a predetermined INI laid on the machine. (We have low speed connections as well as disability users and General users etc.  Depending on switches used during the push install or manually, it will drop a copy of the INI as requested which is built into the Wise "wrapper" we created)  It also allows us to place SSO information and files, registry info, additional INI's which are specific to our landscape.  The Wise installation then calls the SAP GUI installer created from the Installation server.  At the end of the GUI install, it places the predetermined INI file over the one created at the point of install.  (Keep in mind this is just a brief overview)
    I am sure there are other possibilities but these are just from our experiences here.  I would have to let others speak to how they perform such operations.

  • Need Real Help & Advice With Replacement MBP Options!

    Hi All,
    Please kindly give me some advice as I need to act quickly - I already have a MBP 15" 2.4 Unibody replacement agreed by Apple only last week (replacing a Intel 2.2 GB MBP) but I am pretty sure that the Senior Customer Services Person I spoke to was not aware of any due upgrade as he was very helpful and probably genuinely did not know. In view of the new models announced, should I stick with this or ask for the new 2.53 version which is actually cheaper and therefore I am somewhat hopeful they should do (or would they now generally offer me the new one?) Can any of you kind folks also please tell me:
    1. What are the advantages/disadvantages between the old 2.4 Unibody MBP & the new 2.53 Unibody MBP?
    2. I know the new one comes with an SD card slot and loses the Express Card Slot but is the loss of the latter a big thing? Can the old one with the use of card readers actually shift data from the MBP to a SD card (or any other) via card reader/device? Is Express Card or SD Card Slot more desirable and better utilised?
    3. I think the newer one has less better 9400M integrated graphics - is that true and how big a deal is that? (I plan on downloading and watching lots of HD content) Is it better to go for the dual 9400M/9600GT graphics
    4. I know the new one can be upgraded to 8GB of Ram which sound really good for future-proofing and general super-smooth running purposes so I guess this feature is really important? I guess it can take 4 x 2GB sticks?
    5. Some have stated that they are very happy that the new ones have Firewire back but was that also not on the old 2.4 one?
    6. How big/good/bad a thing is it to have a non replaceable battery even though in theory, it may last longer?
    7. The new version makes a big deal about the screen - is it a good reason to upgrade or as good as they make out?
    8. Are the Hard Drives on these latest versions user-replaceable/upgradable? (250GB is still a little low for my future needs and I was planning to upgrade to a higher capacity).
    9. As I am not a savvy as most when it comes to this sort of stuff, is there anything else that I have not considered/should consider or have taken into account and which may prove to be be of significance in the future?
    10. Is it safe to assume that the newer model may be better as it may have had bugs or issues the old one may have had ironed out?
    11. Because of the better graphics and larger Hard Drive (320GB), I am also inclined to go for the 2.66 model - how should I best proceed if I choose this model - will they likely give me one (or better still, how can I best wangle one!) or is it possible to offer to pay some money to make up for the difference and what would be considered a fair and reasonable amount?
    I am very sorry to ask so many questions but I need to act fairly quickly on this one and would be extremely grateful for the help and input!
    Many Thanks To All!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the help so far - I know the HD is replaceable on the 2.4 MBP but can you confirm that this is also the case with the new 2.53/2.66 MBP's?
    Yes. I can confirm that.
    Do you have any further thoughts regarding the benefits of the new over the old?
    I am a big fan of the unibody MacBook Pros. I had purchased mine in October 2008. I could easily purchase a new one with out a second thought. They are exceptional machines.
    OLD - Better Discrete Graphics, Express Card Slot, Replaceable Batteries, Upgradeable HD, Poorer Screen, RAM limited to max 4GB
    NEW - Poorer Integrated Graphics, SD Card Slot, Better Screen, Upgradeable RAM to 8GB, Fixed Internal Battery but with Longer Life, Unsure if HD is User-Upgradable
    The batteries can be replaced at an Apple Store at any time. The hard drive can be upgraded by the user. The graphics are still very good.
    Anything else I might have missed? I would like to choose the one that offers the most future-proofing and will operate the best when running Snow Leopard and Windows, HD Material and will cause least performance issues!
    Check out the requirements for Snow Leopard. http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
    You cannot go wrong with a unibody MacBook Pro. Leopard runs on Macs that are 10-years old. Whatever your choice, you will be "future proofed".
    Good luck!
