In need of some website design feedback (experts please)

Hey guys I've been designing and redesigning my personal website this is the 5th time I've basically done it over and started from scratch, I find it is very difficult to be objective when designing for myself, and I know that there are probably a number of you who have been doing graphic design far longer than I have (about 6 months), and I'd like to get your feedback, anything that is constructive criticism is appreciated. Just as a background my website is to show my music, select graphic design, and sound design projects I have done. "Future Someday" is what I put out electronic music as, and is somewhat of the largest section (a bit how Tycho designs as iso50, but both are equally important to his "brand"). So my site is futuresomeday.com . I'm designing in muse, here are some sites that look quite good from my perspective and I would like to create something comparable, though I don't need to have their exactl layout/ design style: bleed.com , Alex Goose , Kurppa Hosk , The Designers Republic™ , and Form: Design-led furniture, lighting and accessories for contract environments. . Now I need help from a REFINE EDGE expert please

Have figured out a few things with some great advice, now I'm in need of some guidance regarding the REFINE EDGE feature.
I have painstakingly selected with the magic wand tool the area in which I will be using ENHANCE>HUE/SATURATION for my sky. The object looks very well selected to be excluded except when zooming way in which I did after performing an initial hue/sat adjustment. All looked pretty good except that there is too much of the old sky pixel around the edges of the subject, just a little so the entire image looks a bit "photoshopped."
I was thinking the REFINE EDGE function would help with this. Is this correct? I have adjusted the controls pretty extensively in all directions numerous times and just not seeing results I was hoping I would get.
What should I be adjusting, numbers up or down, sliders right or left, which options on or off to get the edges of the new sky color to meet the edges of the subject without getting that fakey old edge?

Seems deselecting smart radius is helpful, why is that?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. Why always i need to close Firefox.exe from task manager when visiting some websites?

I just defaced to the problem , when i'm trying to visit http://cyberprogrammers.net/ website from Firefox browser, its frozen and i need to close firefox.exe from task manager. <a href="http://cyberprogrammers.net/">Cyber Programmers</a> website is working perfect with other browsers, and i try to open it with my friends computer, with Firefox browser and i don't get any error like that, its not frozen. Wrt54G v7 some websites without color/images, needs reset.

Since i upgraded lastest firmware i need to reset router once in a while because some websites dont load good, or no websites at all are loading or loading very slow.

It seems like after the firmware upgrade you have not tried to reset and reconfigure the router as should have done....
Still, that can be made to work, try to access the router set up page http://192.168.1.1 with username = blank and password = admin....Go to the option on the first screen that says MTU - select the option as manual and reduce the size from 1500 to 1400....

you are in a catch 22 - you don't have time to learn flash -
yet you need to build an entire site
immediately - you can't - sure you can download a template
that is similar but if this forum is any
proof, you almost need more flash knowledge trying to
decipher most templates in order to edit them
- search this forum, there are several posts per week from
non-flash users who purchased templates
and have no clue how to edit them. Often times it is hard for
an educated flash user to
reverse-engineer a FLA made by somebody else - Flash
documents are blank canvases that can be setup
a myriad ways by different users making the same thing - some
developers are more organized than
others - most templates are not organized but rather thrown
together for a quick profit.
You will simply need to learn enough flash to understand how
it works or hire somebody to edit the
template for you.

I was not able to access the options with the Blackberry Browser, however Opera Mini had no problems.
Opera mini is a FREE browser that runs o the BB and can sometimes display sites a little better and
with more function.

What is the best way to upload icons I created on illustrator, onto a photoshop file of a website design?

I currently in the process of designing a website on Photoshop. I have designed some icons for the website using Illustrator. What is the best way to upload these icons onto the photoshop file and keep them looking crisp and high quality? I have tried a number of ways but all seem to come out pixilated.

What you need to do is make sure you are creating the Illustrator icons at the same ppi as the Photoshop document and at the correct size. If you have created the icons say with 300ppi but are in pixels it won't carry the same properties as the website you are creating if that has been set up as 72ppi and therefore will distort.
Once you have mastered that then you are best (if you think there may be changes to the icons later down the line) to create .ai files of each icon and place them intt the Photoshop document, then if you make any changes to the source .ai file it will update within you website design.
If you don't see the icons changing then you can always just copy and paste directly from Illustrator to Photoshop and make any changes on the fly by making sure you keep it as a smart object.

Corporate Website Design - Make a Static Custom Map or Google Maps

Could some one please kindly advise on the following:
What is considered more professional if you are designing a corporate Website.
1. To design a custom map that shows each rail road crossing and traffic light on the way to the company. But due to the fact that it is a still image suffer from usability issues e.i. not being able to zoom beyond the drawn bitmap.
2. To embed a well known tool such as Google Maps (that allows world wide zooming), marking the location of the company building with a custom photo pin.
3. A combination of both points above displayed on one contact us site.
The above needs to be corporate design conform.

27.5% - Government Official
9.4% - Network/Association
8.8% - Student
8.7% - Academia
5.8% - NGO Representative
4.8% - IO/IGO Representative
3.4% - Media
2. It is an International Institute so they are from all over the world.
3. Map interaction is not needed but it would be an advantage considering the town in which the institute is located has a common name and often gets mistaken for another in a totally different country.
4. Interactive maps on cell phones and GPS
A map on the webpage is needed because:
A. The audience is so widespread e.i. from Government Officials to Students from all over the world including the LDC countries, that it is near impossible to predict what technologies are available to them, it is assumed that they will be able to access the internet.
B. Requested by the management.

As a graphic designer foremost and website designer
increasingly, I am always looking for inspiration from my next
project. Do you have any sites that you have worked on yourself or
that you particularly regard as state of the art that you could
post here. Websites that sum up the essence of good design, slick
navigation with accessibility always considered.
I know there is such a huge diversity of functionality and
content that drives a sites look but please post a couple of your

As far as the future, what do you see next generation of

Here are a few:
This may not show as actual errors, but your <head>
section has a
LOT of redundant code. Multiple links to identical .js and
.css
files, duplicated JavaScript code, etc...
In your template "BottomRight" region, you have several items
that
belong above the </head> at the top of the page.
However, since they
already do exist there, you can delete them completely.
Specifically
the link to AdelanteStyles.css and that whole block of
JavaScript.
Get rid of the <body> element in that section, too. You
can only
have one body in a Web page.
Since you're using XHTML 1.0 Transitional (do you need to?)
you have
several <br> that should be <br />
After that, I /think/ the only thing left (outside of Flash
stuff)
might be adding a </p> just before the <form>.

I have tried to fix it by tinkering with some settings in google chrome but had no luck!

Unless a web page uses a “web font” that it supplies itself, web pages typically provide a list of fonts, in priority order, of fonts to be used to render text. Typically, this list of fonts represents “system fonts” of MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android - fonts that can be counted on being installed. Helvetica Neue is a MacOS system font that is not typically found on Windows systems. And even if a user licenses recent versions of Helvetica Neue OpenType fonts and installs same on Windows systems, they are in the “Helvetica Neue Std” family which would not match “Helvetica Neue” which is native to MacOS. Thus, I suspect that the Helvetica Neue you have installed on Windows is an older font offering.
There are three issues here:
The first is that web pages provide a priority list for font usage. I suspect that the web pages you are seeing Helvetica Neue actually used on your system are requesting fonts in the order of Helvetica Neue and then Arial. The typical MacOS system would display the content with Helvetica Neue and the typical Windows system would display the content with Arial. Since you have Helvetica Neue on your system, you are getting rendering similar to what a MacOS system would have.
The second issue is that there is no way to force a web page to reverse the order of priority of the fonts it lists.
And finally, the third issue is that there is no way to hide a font selectively by application.
The only way you can avoid Helvetica Neue being used on web pages preferring Helvetica Neue to let's say Arial or any other font on its list for particular text rendering is to uninstall Helvetica Neue.
That having been said, other than perhaps personal type design preferences, are there any other issues with regards to use of Helvetica Neue for display of these web pages?

Using Firefox v29.0.1; running Win 7 Pro 64-bit version.
Some websites do not display properly - as if Firefox is not finding the CSS (Facebook for one).
Also, on Craig's List, I can't click on any of the links including the contact/reply button.
Wanted to attach screenshots but see no place to do so.
