In OSX Mountain Lion, In "About This Mac", On the "Storage" Tab: What types of files (e.g. file extensions) are grouped as "Backup" type files?

There's about 60Gb of "Backup" type files shown on my hard drive, but I don't beleive that I have created any such files. Can anyone tell me the types of files I should be searching for on my drive? (I'm trying to reduce clutter on my drive and eradicate any unnecessary files).

If you see "Backups" category on the internal drive, it means that Time Machine is creating local snapshots. Read > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html
Local snapshots are deleted when the internal drive is getting full, so you don't have to worry about local snapshots

You are not specific with your problem or errors but one thing that always throws people off is as follows:
When entering you're login name you must use the entire login with carrier name such as [email protected] The field defults to just your name but not the carrier name.

Insert your OS installer disk in the optical drive. Power the Mac down by holding down the power button. Then power back up and hold down the 'c' key so the MBP boots to the installer disk. From Disk Utility you should do a Repair Disk. If DU successfully repairs the disk quit the installer and reboot your Mac. You should update to 10.6.8 prior to upgrading to ML.

As long as they're all logged into the Mac App store with the same Apple ID, you can re-download the installer to all the Macs.
Or you can save a copy of the installer file before you run it and use that to update the other Macs. The ML installer file will appear in your Applications folder when it's done downloading. Copy it to another location (don't move it).
If you don't copy it before you upgrade, it will disappear when ML is finished installing.

How do I Choose About This Mac from the Apple Menu.

I installed Maverick. Appears to have been a big mistake. So I went to Phone help and the want my serial number before they will talk to me. So their site says that I should "Choose About This Mac from the Apple Menu." I don't know where the Apple Menu is. Help.

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

I have been charged for the OS X but don't have it installed. About this Mac tells me I am still running Snow Leopard and when I go into the App Store it says installed and I can't reinstall it. If so, the first thing I would do is to back up your data on the ill mac. I assume both macs have firewire port, get a cable and connect both macs via this cable. Then restart your ill mac by pressing T key after chime, it will become a simple external disk you should see on the desktop of your healthy mac. Back up your data.
Now, with this action accomplished, you may go on. BArney - 15E is optimistic and says how to restart in recovery mode—this may be possible if installation was complete for recovery partition (I doubt this, but I may be wrong).
Otherwise, I would reinstall from the scratch. If after connecting your ill mac via FW, you may see the disk in good order, you should also see the Lion installer within Applications folder. Copy it unto an external disk or flash disk and keep it safe, you will need it again.

Does anyone know how to determine the OS based on files, rather than going into Apple > About This Mac ?
I have an external disk that I've gotten back from a data recovery service, and I'm trying to determine what OS the drive was running under. 10.5/10.5 Server or 10.6/10.6 Server? I was thinking some differences between the OS's could be found in:
- Library > Preferences?
- Kernel Version?
- Error logs?

Say I gave you a system folder and asked you to tell me what OS version it was. How would you be able to determine based on the files / data inside the system folder what system the data was generated from? Or would you be able to?

My "About this mac" lists the processor as a 3.4GHz Intel Core i7. Is this a quad core i7 processor?

under "About this Mac" it says that the processor is a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7. Is this a quad core processor? If so, why is it not stated as such?

Click "System Report"
Under "Hardware Overview" it will list "Total number of Cores". You can check that way. Cores are not listed in About this Mac on my machine either.

Before we get started please note that I know Mavericks is released and it is better, however I need Mountain Lion in this case. I currently can't access the Mac AppStore due to a glitch on my computer and I am wondering if there is any way to purchase Mountain Lion OSX without being on my Mac, basically just buy it on my Apple ID. If you know of any ways, please respond with a link to a website if it is a website of course, and thanks for your help in advance!

I tried to download the latest OSX for my iMac - Mountain Lion.
This is the message that I received:

What does this mean?

The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
Power down. Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore.
No trouble at all once I did this.
Reminder: create full backup before you upgrade OS

Why is there a difference of 17GB in storage remaining between 'about this mac' and the hdd in finder?

I am running Mavericks on my macbook air. I had approx 17gb of movies which I transfered to my external drive and then deleted them. When i checked my storage space in 'about my mac' it says i have 17.5gb remainin which should read around 35gb. When i open up finder and click the 'i' tab on my hdd it says there is 35gb remaining which is as it should be. Please help, it's doing my head in. I never had any dramas running mountain lion!

If you have Time Machine turned on, the difference could be the Local Backups the system is storing temporarily until you sync to your Time Machine backup drive. Sice those files are "low priority" and will be overwritten by the user if required, the Finder does not acknowledge them as "used". However, the profiler will count them as used.
See if syncing yoru Time Machine "resets" for the one showing less space available.

About this Mac More Info Storage ... What is "Other"?

I am trying to figure out what "Other" means, because my HD is about full and there is 104gb worth of "other" in there. I need to clean house, but it's not the music/photos that's holding me down.

other is what can't be clasified in the other categories. If stores OS X and system files among other things. Download OmniDiskSweeper and see if you can find out what is taking up the space and what is safe to delete.
