In place upgrade - server 2008r2 sp1 standard to server 2012 standard

I run setup from the CD.  Choose upgrade. and then get the following from Windows Compatibility Report.
<message xmlns="">Before continuing, make sure the app vendors support your applications on Windows Server 2012. Follow their specific recommendations before and after Windows installs. To make
sure your app is compatible and to download tools and documentation, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243105
Important: If the software isn't compatible with Windows Server 2012 or if the app vendor doesn't support the app, uninstall it before you install Windows. If you don't uninstall the applications, your system won't be supported, the app might not work, and
settings or other information might be lost. </message>
<message xmlns="">Windows won't install unless each of these things is taken care of. Close Windows Setup, take care of each one, and then restart Windows Setup to continue. </message>
<complianceissuepri1 xmlns="">An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel the installation and try upgrading again.  </complianceissuepri1>
How can I find what's failing the compliance check?
Thanks,
Brandon

Wow.  Just wow.  I spent like 2 hours looking for this, VERY few suggestions on Google, and I finally found this post and had to look at that tiny text.  Sure enough, I give that partition a drive letter and the compatibility check passes.
This is the third server I've done, and the first one to have any goofy issue like that...and I'm sure I'll never be able to explain it.
Thank you TREMENDOUSLY for posting it though!

we run several Windows Server 2008r2 SP1 Enterprise as VM on two Stratus Avance xenserver based VM hosts. On both hosts we run a VM as file-server, RDS server including a little bit of DFS traffic. the underling physical machines are Intel based S5520UR
with plenty full of needed resources, running since 2012 more or less without problems.
Recently we on both physical hosts the STOP error 0x0000001e (0xffffffffc0000005, 0xfffff8800a07d7f0, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000).
This has happended now twice and we have no clue or idea why the Stop error arrives now were the VM is running for month without such an error.
We have tried to analyze the problem with WnDbg and the result reported: Probably caused by : mrxsmb10.sys ( mrxsmb10!MRxSmbDeferredCreate+18a )
We have searched for a solution and have identified some hotfixes which could be related to our problem
    Hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2521220/en-us
    and / or
    Hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2764302/en-us
The latter one matches the typical use of the VMs in question, file-server function and a flat file based database system with corresponding file I/O. (However, no dramatic system load and approx. 20 concurrent users on the system.)
The file NTFS.sys in the folder System32 are with a newer date and version as the version from the hotfix and we are not sure if this would be a good idea to replace it with the hotfix version.
As we are a small cap company we could not test the outcome of such a change of essential OS files and we tend to stay away from this approach. On the other hand we have a high pressure to solve this issue as we have to rely on the function of this core
    system.
WinDbg points us towards mrxsmb10.sys as a possible root cause, but my believe is limited and we have not the knowledge to understand the output of the memory dump file. (mrxsmb was over the last 15 years always a difficult “thing”!)
Would someone so kind to point us to some useful steps or direct us to any helpful advise?

We have current setup with Exchange Server 2010 SP1 ( DAG & CAS Array with WNLB).
Can we upgrade directly from Exchange Server 2010 SP1 to
    Exchange Server 2010 SP3 . ?
    Thanks in Advanced.
    Regards,Ali

    Hi Ali,
Yes, you can. Please upgrade your Exchange 2010 SP1 server roles in the following order: Client Access, Hub Transport, Unified Messaging, Mailbox, Edge Transport. What's more, please note that when you install a Service Pack or update rollup on a server
that's a DAG member, several services will be stopped during the installation, including all Exchange services and the Windows Cluster service.

  • In-place upgrade from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012

    Hi all,
we are currently running SAP ERP EHP7 (Netweaver 7.40 ) on Windows 2008 R2 server, MS SQL 2012 database.
Is it possible to do in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2012?
We want to do upgrade without buying new hardware  and perform system copy.
    Regards

    Hi,
the only note where we discussed our findings about in-place upgrades of the Windows operating system is SAP Note 1494740.
Even though the upgrade to Windows Server 2012 is not discussed explicitly, the note is also valid for Windows Server 2012.
The only thing you have to take care is: upgrade your system components (database, other 3rd party software) to versions supported on Windows Server 2012 before you are performing the in-place upgrade.

  • Groupwise 8 on Server 2008R2 SP1 Performance and Defrag Questions

I am running GroupWise 8.0.2 on an HP DL360G G7 with 24 GB of RAM and Dual Xeon X5650 processors under Server 2008 R2 Sp1. Post Office is using roughly 562 GB of an 819 GB Disk located on an HP p2000 g3 SAS connected enclosure comprised of 12 x 146 GB (15k rpm) SAS disks in a RAID 10 configuration. Typically never more than 700 users connected to the Post Office at any time. I am experiencing client slowness at regular intervals. Roughly every three weeks. The solution tends to be to restart the server and give it a fresh start, which holds for a while.
    Concerns.
    1. When the server restarts I see minimal memory utilization maybe 1.5 GB within half an hour the Used memory climbs a bit to about 2GB but free memory is quickly pre-allocated to standby memory. Within about 2 hours the Free memory is all consumed and I have about 20+ GB of Standby Memory. Running RAMMap indicates that the memory is being used by Metafile and Mapped File, Which tells me that the Post Offices files are being indexed and cached into RAM. Then after a couple weeks go by the amount of active RAM exceeds 8GB (still mostly Metafile, not so much Mapped File). And standby RAM still consumes the remaining RAM between Metafile and Mapped file, leaving no free memory. Typically once I reach about 8GB of memory actively used by the system (mostly Metafile), it's time for performance to drop for the clients.
Also, I'm seeing increases in Disk Queue Length for the Post Office Volume. Typically below 2 rarely as high as 5,
I suspect my best solution is to start a regular defrag process as my volume is now 29% defragmented [yeah NTFS :( ]
    Question:
I am concerned a defrag could take as much if not longer than 10 hours. Which is too long for the agents to be down. So I was wondering if anyone had used DiskKeeper or alternative 3rd party Defrag utilities that might be able to defrag open files in the background, or if anyone had run defrag with the agents running to get the defragable files, then shut down the agents for a second pass which should be considerably shorter. Any advice that can be offered, or other suggestions for my described issue, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You!

    A) Updating to latest code may assist as this could also be a memory fragmentation type
issue or such that has been fixed
    B) Perhaps even more RAM might help. How much space do the ofuser/*.db and ofmsg/*.db files
take up? The more mail flows, the more of those DB file content are held in memory. A few
versions ago, you tended to need as much RAM as the total of the DB files, and while those
days are gladly past, it is still a good number to watch out for.
    C) Explore Caching mode for at least some of the users as that significantly reduces the
    load on a server.
    > I suspect my best solution is to start a regular defrag process as my volume is now

Still way better than old FAT ;)
This is one of the reasons why GroupWise runs better on Linux with either EXT3 or NSS
volume types, and is why SLES is provided along with your GroupWise license.
As for running Defragments, even running it for just a few hours a week will gradually
help, especially if you can fit in one big burst near the beginning. So if you can automate
the process of shut down agents, run defrag for X hours and then shut it down, then restart
the agents, you may clear this all up. Just having the agents down an hour a week might
clear the memory usage issue for you.
I would be very hesitant to run any defrag on open database files of any email system
unless the defrag tool knew explicitly about that email system. But a smart defragger that
can keep the *.db files in their own (fastest) section of the drive and the rest off to the
side would go a long way to making the defragmentation process much more efficient.
I haven't directly run a GroupWise system on any flavor of Windows, since OS/2, so this is
more a combination of all my platform knowledge, but I hope it gets you closer to a smooth
running system. And if the other GW on Windows admins can pipe in, all the better.

    Hello,
I have a question, can I upgrade the software of hyper-v server 2008r2 free version to hyper-v server 2012r2 free version.
I want to upgrade a exciting server so a in place upgrade, if yes do I have to worry about something? like shutting down vm's?
    thx in advance

    Hi,
it's not possible to perform an inplace upgrade from Hyper-V server 2008R2 to Hyper-V server 2012
You can find some more info
    here.
You can export your Hyper-V guests, reinstall the machine with a fresh install and import them again.

  • Issue in Upgrading Windows 2008 R2 Standard server to Windows 2012 Standard Srever

    Hi
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 stadard running... (came with the server).
To use 64GB, we have just purchased a licence key (retail) and downloaded ISO (Evaluation version) to upgrade.
Then I got this error message saying that
"Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI) instead, but this is different from
an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs."
Well, fresh installation is not an option for me. no way..
I read somewhere that it is because I am trying to upgrade from licenced 2008 R2 standard to evaluation 2012 standard. Then I saw a screenshot where you supply a licence key after selecting an edition to choose..
I don't get that screen sinceit is the evaluation version.
    Well, I am supposed to upgrade the system before the end of the new year...  now I am in a panic.. - - ;;
Can anyone help me with this please???

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Agree with words of “Dave & Tim” and based on my research, we need to perform a clean installation of Windows Server 2012 Evaluation Versions instead upgrading.
However, if we have licensed Windows Server 2012, we can upgrade to Windows Server 2012 by referring to the Upgrading previous retail versions of Windows Server to Windows Server 2012 part of
Evaluation Versions and Upgrade Options for Windows Server 2012.
    Hope it helps!

So i need this to work as an in place upgrade to 2008I feel your pain, but any company worth their salt will (meaning the vendor) should know that you cannot simply perform an in-place upgrade of a Server OS.
Really the proper method is to backup everything, format and install Server 2008 (are you limited to 32-bit?), restore data/reinstall software. What's the reasoning for the upgrade? 2003 EOL or something else?
Do you have a guarantee that the software will even work on...

    Hello everyone.
We seem to be having an issue when doing an in place upgrade on our windows 2003 R2 server to go to Windows 2008. Every time we try and do the upgrade, once the server reboots it blue screens with no real information. Just mentioned to try and do a check disk to check for hard drive issues.
It gives us the option to go the earlier version of windows (back to 2003 R2) but nothing we have tried has succeeded so far.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi all,
We are planning to upgrade to Windows 2012 and SQL 2012 , can we take this in-place upgrade path in the following order ?
    Setup 1 Host with 2 VM's running Windows 2008 R2 on Host and Windows 2008 R2/sqL 2008 on VM's.
    1. Host1(running 2 VM's) - In-place upgrade windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2

All Servers ( including Host and VM's) are stand alone in a workgroup setup.( except one VM a stand alone AD server by itself).

  • Best Path to upgrade Exch 2010 SP1/W2K8 R2 to Exch2010 SP3/W2K8 R2 SP1

What would be the best path forward to upgrade an existing Exchange 2010 SP1 server (no rollups) on Windows Server 2008 R2 to Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1? Exchange is on a DAG with a secondary server.

    Hi,
In addition to Ed Crowley's suggestion, I would like to clarify the following thing about upgrading Exchange server and Windows server:
In-place upgrade is not supported, it will break Exchange.
Here is a thread for your reference.
In-place upgrade exchange 2010-SP3 to Windows Server 2012

In your case, you need to set up a new server, move mailboxes to it at first.
    Secondly, upgrade Windows server.
    Hope it helps.

  • Server 2008r2 and windows 7 pro slow to no networkshare file searching and file access (green progress bar)

we are running a windows server 2008r2 sp1 domain controller and a 3com gigabit switch to which 7 windows 7 pro computers are connected. We are only using the windows server to distribute a few printers and as a network share (z drive).
we are storing all files (word documents only) centrally on the server (z share), and files are accessed and written to the z share.
Problem is that file access from the z share on the windows 7 client computers is at best buggy. we are able to browse the z-share, but as soon as we want to search the z-share for files (f.i. use file explorer with "content: memorandum") the green
progress bar shows and no search is performed. something like alphabetically sorting a directory on map/file name on the z-share also shows a green bar with no sorting. manually going to the files works.
One thing i noticed, sometimes not all files that one user created and stored on the server is visible and can be found by another user. I prefer to disable all offline file caching setting, because that feature is not used. no files should be made accessible
offline. i don't know where to change that on the server side.
I am reluctant to experiment on the server end (2008r2 sp1), so i tried a few suggested solutions on the client end (windows 7 client)
I tried disabling offline file caching
i tried properties (z share) ==> advanced and map optimizing and several options there
i tried disabling the smbv2 protocol and disabling the smbv1 protocol (using
sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi command etc. posted by microsoft)
    i tried disabling windows defender
i tried accessing the z share via ip and server name (the share is mapped via its servername, e.g. dennis-dc1\share). still the same
file searching on the clients c drive ('own harddrive') works much better, file searching on the server also works.
any suggestions or solutions that i can test on the client side, as mentioned i am reluctant to change something on the server side. if a solutions works, i prefer to change it on the server side.

    Hi,
The issue could be due to windows indexing service taking long time in sorting and searching in mapped drives. Please try the steps belwo to disable windows indexing service or search service on the windows 7 client to resolve the issue.
You can click on Start and select Control Panel, click on
Programs and Features, go into the Turn Windows Features on or off section Scroll down the list and uncheck the box next to Indexing Service or Windows Search.

  • Windows Server 2008r2 - Users somtimes can't see new files in folders unless a new file is created.

    Hello Folks!
My users sometimes have a problem that user A sometimes can't see a file created or copied by user B to a directory within a share they can both access. Both are within the same group which grants them Full Access on the share, settings for permissions are
correctly set to be applied on directories, subdirectories and files.. Confusingly, this can be fixed when user A creates some kind of file (empty .txt, for example); the "missing" files will suddenly appear.
