In preferences what does "Override automatic cache management" mean and do?

I was wondering what "Override automatic cache management" means and does.

Firefox normally manages the size of it's cache, and can cache more or less information depending on various factors.
Checking this option allows you to specify the maximum size of the Firefox cache, in MB.
There isn't usually any need to enable this option.

500 errors in the HTTP cycle
Any client (e.g. your Web browser or our CheckUpDown robot) goes through the following cycle when it communicates with the Web server:
Obtain an IP address from the IP name of the site (the site URL without the leading 'http://'). This lookup (conversion of IP name to IP address) is provided by domain name servers (DNSs).
Open an IP socket connection to that IP address.
Write an HTTP data stream through that socket.
Receive an HTTP data stream back from the Web server in response. This data stream contains status codes whose values are determined by the HTTP protocol. Parse this data stream for status codes and other useful information.
This error occurs in the final step above when the client receives an HTTP status code that it recognises as '500'. Frank Vipond. September 2010.

This error can only be resolved by fixes to the Web server software. It is not a client-side problem. It is up to the operators of the Web server site to locate and analyse the logs which should give further information about the error.

  • What does the error message -203 mean and how do I fix it becaus I can't download addons nor anything else.

The error message shows up every time I try to download an addon. Does it have to do with the update 3.6.13?

The first thing I test to do when iMovie doesn't behave as it should is to trash the preference file.
It's a very common way to try to solve problems with Applications that has problems.
Reg iMovie that file is named as one or more of these
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Not always all of them are present - but many can be
    I also trash
    com.apple.iApps.plist
and clean out the Cache folder
All of them are in a folder named Library - BUT as there are more than one - most people chose the wrong one.
The obvious one is Library on Root level - first window that opens when You open Your Start-Up Hard Disk.
AND - that is the wrong one
The one to find is the one in Your User Account folder - and in Mac OS X.7 and so on - it is HIDDEN.
Easiest way to find the correct one is to go up to the top row Menu (Apple symbol to the top Left hand corner of screen) and here go to the right to GO and keep Option-key DOWN and it will Show You the correct Library.
Now - here find the folder Preferences to move out the com.apple.xxxxxx files to the desktop WHEN APPLICATION IS NOT RUNNING ! IMPORTANT !
then find the folder named Caches - here too - try to identify the cache files that are connected to the application - and move them too to desktop.
Now try to run Your application e.g. iMovie
There is an easier way to test if this is the real problem by
    • Goto Apple menu and down to System preferences
    • Select Accounts
    • Click on the Plus sign and create a new user e.g. test1
    • Apple menu - and down to Log out
    • Now log into the new user test1
    • Now see if application runs as intended
If so - then the problem to 99% is in the Pref or Cache files.

  • Override Auto Cache Management

Not really a problem, as such.. but something that is a little annoying.
The Override Auto Cache Management option doesn't seem to work properly, unless what is happening SHOULD be happening?
Basically, by default it is set to 75Mb.. I'll set it to around 350-400Mb. However, at random intervals, Firefox will default the settings back to 75Mb, out of the blue. No warning or anything.
Why does is keep defaulting back to 75Mb? I have also changed the option using About:Config with the 'browser.cache.disk.capacity' option. but it still defaults back to 75Mb.
Is there anything I could be doing wrong? Another setting that needs to be changed? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

The cache size usually ends up around 350 MB, unless you have very little free disk space. I suggest you start over:
    # Type ''about:config'' into the address bar and press Enter.
    # Press the big button to bypass the warning.
    # In the search box, type ''browser.cache.''
    # In the search results, right-click each entry with the status "user set" and choose '''Reset'''.
    # Type ''about:cache'' into the address bar and press Enter. Under the "Disk cache device" category, note the value of the '''Cache Directory'''. Open that folder in Windows Explorer.
    # Exit Firefox (click the Firefox button in the top left corner, then choose Exit).
    # Delete the cache folder you opened earlier.
    # Restart Firefox.
At that point, your cache size should be set to something more sensible. Note that under [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption|Options - Advanced - Network]], the number box shows the maximum cache size, while the text above it shows how much is currently stored.<br>
If you still need to override the automatic size, then normally all you need to do is check "Override automatic cache management", specify a custom size below, then click the OK button.<br>
Doing so would save the first preference as ''browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled'' with a value of '''false''', and the second as ''browser.cache.disk.capacity'' with a value in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibibyte kibibytes]. To avoid unintended effects, it's best to avoid modifying about:config preferences (at least in this case).
If your preferences are lost after restarting Firefox, see the following article:

  • What does 'include render files' option mean for when I duplicate a project. I deselected it and the duplicated file is very slow so maybe this has affected it. It's a shame cause original project is deleted. Have I lost the rendered files? Thanks

What does 'include render files' option mean for when I duplicate a project. I deselected it and the duplicated file is very slow so maybe this has affected it. It's a shame cause original project is deleted. Have I lost the rendered files? Thanks

Yes, if you duplicate without the render files and delete the original project you lose the render files. But render files get recreated - automatically if you have it set in the preferences (which is the default option). It just takes time.

In Layman terms, what the heck does updating your carrier settings mean, and how does it effect me in the real world?

No offense, but what carrier?  what data and what service?
I get a bogus window hovering in my itunes page, telling me I have to update information, that I don't want to manage.
I am not upset or unappreciative of your feedback, quite the opposite, I can't believe anyone actually monitors peoples frustrations.
I just want to make sure I don't allow information about me that is not necessary.  I just want to listen to music and have a phone and have an ipad.
Everything else about apple is way to propriatory. I don't want to do anything that isn't very simple.
Most importantly, there never seems to be any (human being) that can answer a telephone call anymore.
Contact us, means...send us an email about something you don't know anything about, and I don't even know that questions to ask.
I am not allowed to be ignorant.  If I am I wait days for answers.....

  • What does "Only DRM free/unprotected" mean when trying to transfer pictures and videos to my laptop?

What does "Only DRM free/unprotected" mean when trying to transfer pictures and videos to my laptop?

Only Digital Rights Management music and video which you do not own rights to copy or use cannot be placed on your device.
songs you have paid for or own outright will not have those restrictions.
    hope that helped?
    Good Luck

  • HT201250 what does reported "error code 6584" mean ?

What does reported "error code 6584" mean ? when trying to get into my time machine back up.

First, I suggest you make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. You should do that anyway. One backup isn't enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
    2. Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences and check that the device is selected as a destination. If it isn't, select it and try again.
    3. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
    4. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups on the device will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

    Hi Velvalee,
While there may not be specific information about that error, here is an article of steps for troubleshooting connectivity issues with the iTunes store:
