In recovery mode, I cannot unlock Filevault2-encrypted Macintosh HD

Hello!
I boot with cmd-R to access recovery tools
If I try to reinstall Lion or do a "checkdisk", I have to unlock Macintosh HD first.
So the small popup appears and I enter my password
My password is refused. No way to unlock the encrypted Macintosh HD.
I know I type the right password because it is only 4 lowercase letters and the password is accepted when I boot in "normal" mode
Apple, please correct this bug as soon as possible!!
Anyone got this problem?

The object of Filevault is so that no access is possible via any other means except the secure path laid out with a fully running OS X to ensure your data is secure. This is a very secure and limited access state intentional to supply the security provided.
The Lion Recovery Partition is just a tiny program on a partition, the window asking for your password shouldn't have appeared at all.
If the Lion Recovery Partition allowed a unlocking of a Filevault drive, means that that code could be easily cloned, altered and used to crack any Mac with Filevault with a simple USB key. The government snoops would be screaming if they knew this was possible.
Filevault is a complete waste of time and effort for most users, it hogs CPU cycles, slows down one's machine and disables recovery options if OS X fails to boot as one can't decrypt the image and simply recover files using a alternative means (like Firewire Target Disk Mode for instance)
It's better for most users to leave Filevault alone and either use a Iron Key or individual file/folder encryption software on just the items they need.
This way if something goes wrong, the files are either off the machine or the drive can be accessed and the encrypted files/folders transferred to another Mac, decryption software installed and the correct password used to decrypt the files.
Military and Government parnoid level total drive encryption is overkill for most regular users needs as they don't access super secure networks that require it. And since most all of those super secure networks are not on the internet, makes it inaccessible to most users anyway.
Most users just need a folder or two encrypted, with the ability to move them to another comptuer, not their entire drives encrypted in a unmovable state.
Also the advatage of having something like a Iron Key is that one has the files off their computer and can easily and quickly dispose of the Iron Key in a rapid manner smashing it with a hard large rock for instance and spreading the pieces around at random, or burying it in the ground for another, try doing that with a computer.
As if you don't already know, Apple is vulnerable to government influence, they certainly have complete access to Filevault no matter what Apple says.
A four character password?, heck I could crack that on my Mac in about 5 minutes.
So if your not super serious about protecting your data, just want to keep snoops at pay, do the file/folder encryption or Iron Key method instead of Filevault, don't be sorry later like your sorry now that you can't repair your drive permissions or access your drive if OS X fails to boot.

  • Cannot unlock FileVault2 drive when on Recovery Mode

    Hi there!
I have a MacBook Pro 2009 with a Portuguese (Portugal) keyboard. I have my account set with this keyboard correctly. But when I try to unlock my FileVault2 partition on the Disk Utility application in Recovery Mode on MAC OS X Lion, I cannot correctly enter my password because there is no way I can change the default keyboard mapping.
I click on the US flag that came by default to change it to Portuguese, but cannot enter the password correctly, because it has not often used characters like "€$%&/!" etc.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you very much.
    Best Regards,
    Marcus.

  • IPhone 4s stuck in Recovery Mode. CANNOT Restore. Help!

I need help getting my iPhone out of recovery mode. All that the screen shows is a black background, the white charger, and an arrow pointing at the iTunes icon. When I plugged the charging cable into my computer to recharge my phone's battery -- it had gotten below 10% before the screen changed to this -- iTunes tells me that I need to restore my iPhone.
Here's the problem. Although my back up is pretty much up to date -- I backed up yesterday -- this afternoon, I was at a sports event my company held, with more than 300 participants, all children. I took more than 100 (possibly 200) photos of the children at the request of the company president, to use on the company's web site and social media accounts (I am the company's webmaster). My phone battery died (the Apple logo came up, and then the screen went blank) as the last of the award winners was on the podium (it happened to be my son, so a friend snapped his photo). When I got into the car, I plugged the phone in, and all I got was the low battery icon. When I got home and plugged the phone into the AC base, the charger/iTunes graphics came up. I thought it odd that iTunes was being requested, so I took the phone and the cable and plugged into my laptop... where I was informed of the need to restore the phone.
I CANNOT restore. I CANNOT lose those photos. I already showed them to my boss (my NEW boss... I only got hired last week!) and she was very excited about how great they'll look online. The site is sorely lacking in photos of our children's events. I cannot restore because it will go back to what I had yesterday... and I need these photos!
How can I NOT restore? Please don't suggest my purchasing some software package. The reason I got this job is because I don't have any income and I can't afford $70 software or the time. If the phone must be restored, then I most definitely will need help in attempting to recover the lost data (the photos!). Please, please help... I just spent the last four hours taking these photos and I cannot afford to lose them! Regardless of what it says here under Product, I hae an iPhone 4s and it is running the most up to date iOS, whatever number that is at this point in time. Thank you in advance for your help!

It is unfortuante that this happened. However, the iPhone will have to be restored. There is no option other than maybe some third party software, if there was another option, you would know already.
You could restore it and see if you had iCloud photostream on. It stores photos you take for up to thirty days. If it was enabled, restore your device and turn it on in settings -> icloud and those photos will show up no problem.
If you did not, it is a possibility that something like dropbox was performing backups of those photos.
I am really sorry this happened to you with the new job and everything, but a restore is unfortunately required as your iPhone has already lost this data anyway.

  • Stuck in recovery mode and cannot reinstall Lion

I have an early 2008 Macbook, running on OS X Lion 10.8, purchased second hand from Ebay in the UK, and now I am based in Israel.
For the last few days, my macbook started to run very slowly, crashing every time i opened a web browser for example.
I decided to erase the drive. I did this by booting up in recovery mode, and through disk utility erasing the drive.
Now my problem is that I cannot reinstall Lion, because my Apple ID has never purchased Lion.
I have thought about using another computer to access the Apple store, purchase Lion, then go back to my macbook and see if my apple ID works when trying to reinstall Lion. (I have realised however, that Lion 10.8 is no longer available in the apple store, and that only mountain lion can be purchased. My macbook is early 2008, and therefore not compatible with mountain lion)
Another idea I had was to use another computer to download Lion 10.8, save it to my external hard drive, and boot from that external hard drive. However, again, 10.8 no longer available)
I tried doing these things in safari in recovery mode, however I am not able to download anything, not even to my external hard drive.
Another idea I had was using someone elses Apple ID who has purchased lion, when trying to reinstall in recovery mode.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm running out of ideas. I also don't know anyone nearby who has a macbook or would have a version of Lion I could boot off a memory stick.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

Yeah same exact problem as me.  EXACTLY.  In a way I'm glad more than just me are having the problem so I know it's probably not on my end and on the apple side....I HOPE that is what it is.
MAN, a whole day and a half????  Crap I need my phone to work....
I really think it's the apple servers because it errors 3014 right when iTunes says "verifying phone....." something....  It goes away so fast I can't read the rest, but I think that is the step where it verifies phone to the apple servers, which are overloaded, I assume.
It's gotta be that.  How many other people are having this same exact issue?

  • IPad abruptly quit, started playing Gaga's Scheibe song and will not now show up in "Devices" on iTunes.  Keeps telling me it detects an iPad in Recovery mode. Cannot get past that.  Help!

How do I recover the data on my iPad2?  It abruptly quit while I was shutting down and started playing Gaga's Scheibe from "Born this Way" -- it was not coming from My Music or iTunes.  I pressed both home key and side button to get it to stop and plugged it in to recharge.  The USB connector to iTures screen showed up and that's as far as I can go.  Had an appointment at the "genius bar" this morning and all they tell me is that they can "restore" which will not save any info I have.  The last backup I did was April 2013 (I know, very stupid of me).  iTunes does not recognize the device.  It's all greyed out and I get a window that says iTunes detected an iPad in Recovery mode.  That's as far as I can get.  I really don't want to lose any data.  Please help me.  Thank you.  Nancy

You have no choice but to lose your data back to the last backup you made.
Here's how to do the recovery.  Note you may have to try to get into recovery mode more than once to succeed:

I'm sure next time, you'll be more vigilant about keeping current backups.

  • HT1414 phone is in recovery mode but cannot restore with error code 21,26

After my latest update on my iPhone 4 my phone started just shutting down and restarting by itself. I have tried to restore the phone with the latest version of iTunes but now get the error message that iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode. Well that's fine, I selected recovery and when it appears that the recovery mode is going to go through the recovery mode returns an error code.
The first code I received is the error 1656, then a 26, then the final attempt I got an error code 21.
This phone has never been dropped, mishandled, or taken any physical damage. It was working great before I attempted to update.
Please if anyone else has experienced this let me know how you resolved these errors.
I have attempted every trouble-shooting step indicated on the Apple support site.
    HELP!

If you have seen and attempted as per the guidelines and not been successful, see the Red text.
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • Ipod touch(1st gen) stuck in recovery mode and cannot restore??

I just bought a used ipod touch 1st gen.  It was fully functional before I wiped it.  I wanted to remove all of the other person's music and personal info before I started using it. I also wanted to update ios.  I wiped it and when it restarted it was in recovery mode. I have tried to restore it and I keep getting an error message that it could not restore unknown error has occurred  (1).  I have tried troubleshooting and going through all of the steps that Apple suggests and nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?  I just want it restored and updated to the latest ios that will work with it (3.1.1 I believe) I don't know what to do at this point.

  • Stuck in recovery mode. Cannot erase my hard drive.

    Background
I tried reformatting while running Snow Leopard, but the option was grayed out and the install disc made the computer hang at the white bootup screen. I figured I'd just upgrade to Lion and do a clean install (not an option).
    Problem
After upgrading to Lion, I booted into recovery to erase the hard drive. I did it and it took less than ten seconds (bad sign).
Now I can't get past recovery and the hard drive is still full.
    Help?

    Options
In Disk Utility I have following options:
    500.11 GB Hitachi HTS5....
         Untitled
    SuperDrive
    disk1
         Mac OS X Base System
    Errors
Repairing the "Untitled" disk originally gave me an error ( Error 16: resource busy I believe). I received a similar error when I tried to unmount it (Error 256 I believe).
    Almost Fixed
Now after restarting a few times, it "repairs" just fine and I can mount and unmount it just fine. When I try to install Mac OS X, however, it'll give me an estimated completion time of 156 hours and 2 minutes, disappear, then start me over on the installation screen. If try again it again, it just hangs on the download screen without even offering an estimated completion time.

I have an iphone4s, and the question basically says it all - after trying to update to ios6, the udgrade downloaded to my computer and started loading onto my phone. However it sudeenly just stopped an turned into the balck screen asking to plug into itunes. When I do this, it says I have to restore the phone, but when I try to restore, it says there is an error (3014).
    I have tried:
    - pressing the home and top buttons unti the apple appears
    - Checked all security software and the ports aren't blocked
    - Have tried pressing option+restore to choose ios6 and ios5.1.1 - neither has worked
    - Its been like this for about a day and a half now, and I have probably tried to restore it at least 50 times to no avail, always with the same error code.
