In reply to John Galt's Instructions

Per your instruction, I started a new discussion.  I did as you instructed, and still no cigar.  My primary confusion lay in the fact that I thought my AU might be hosed.  I see now that it doesn't work unless it's in communication with a device.  Thanks so much for clearing this up for me, and I now understand that 10.6.8 means Snow Leopard.  I won't be going to the the Apple store until Thursday.  I was just hoping to find a solution before forking out dollars, and possibly giving in to the friendly (seductive) advice from a charming genius, and upgrading my life in general.  Bless you for your patience.

Hello,
Please e-mail us directly at [email protected] with more information about your request.
Regards,
OTN

It would help if you could use the "Reply" button in your previous topic rather than start a new topic for a response to a previous post. I saw topic #2 where you were apparently replying to Klaus about your system version in topic #1, then this new topic #3 here where you are replying to John Walker's post in topic #2.
    Thank you.

I am trying to authorise a new computer. Apple's instructions are to select "Authorise this computer" from the itunes store menu. I can't find this in any menu. Can you please help? How do I authorise my computer?

In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.

You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.

  • Time machine deleted all my backups instead of the one selected

I have a one year old Macbook Pro with 16 GB of RAM, running OSX v10.9.5 (Mavericks).  I use a LaCie 2TB external hard drive for my time machine backups, and I needed to delete some of the old TM backups to make space.
Following the instructions at pontini.org (http://pondini.org/TM/12.html ), I opened TM, navigated to the external HD and selected the oldest folder in backups.backupdb, right clicked it and selected 'Delete all backups in [the oldest folder's name]'.  Then I went home for the weekend, and when I got in this morning, Voila!  ALL files in the backups.backupdb folder were gone!  Not only that, but there was nothing in the trash to restore!
Has anyone else had this wonderful experience?
    Thanks,
    Casey

Wow -- thanks for all the comments, folks, I must have struck a nerve!  I'll try to respond to all of them here, in sequence:
John Galt: I loved your comment about "no user serviceable parts inside"!  It was echoed by etresoft, too, later in the chain; sounds like good advice if this ever happens again.  You mentioned that Yosemite incorporated a lot of changes to TM, but I'm not using Yosemite (have been avoiding this upgrade, as it sounds too buggy).  But apparently your advice holds with Mavericks, too.
Etresoft (3:17am): very good point -- I think that's exactly what I did.  What I'm still not clear on is: are the backup files themselves (ie the actual data being backed up, as opposed to hard links) stored in the backup folder that TM creates, or are they kept in a separate file or folder?  It sounds like it's the former, as I had originally thought.  But pondini led me to believe that, if the data WAS stored in the folder, it would not be deleted if there were any links to it in future backup folders.  From what you said, I'm thinking that's probably true IF you are dealing with a backup that's INSIDE TM, but not if its a folder OUTSIDE TM.  Is that right?  If so, this really is a pit that's ripe for idiots like me to fall into.
Lex Schellings (3:52am): I don't think I understand your comment -- you said "All these instructions are to delete a specific file... You should never deleted a dated FOLDER".  But instruction #2 says "One or more individual backups -- it's best to use Time Machine, per the green box below" --  then, in the green box, it says " Locate the backup or item you want to delete via the Timeline or "cascade" of Finder windows".  Since I was trying to delete a "backup", what was I supposed to select, if not a folder?
Etresoft (4:15am): that's an interesting thought, but I don't think I used the sidebar to navigate to the backup I deleted.  When I opened TM, it showed me a sequence of Finder windows with the Star Wars background, but the external hard drive in the Finder window was grayed out and inaccessible.  So I checked pondini again, and it said I could get to it by right-clicking on the TM icon in the task bar (after exiting TM), selecting 'Browse other TM Disks', and selecting the one I wanted.  After I did that, I could see the external hard drive in TM was not gray anymore, and I navigated to the first backup folder.  Apparently, that's what took me "outside" of TM, even though I thought I was inside it.  I will definitely follow up on your suggestion to go to Apple's bug report site and file a report; thanks!
Lex Schellings (4:39am; do you guys ever sleep?): I didn't hear that pondini had died -- I hope you folks weren't close to him; sounds like he was very thorough, and trying to do the right thing.  He just didn't realize there were people like me out there.
I'm surprised at your comment that "the behaviour of deleting one of the TimeMachine dated folders in Finder has always been the wrong way, leading to unhappiness."  That is exactly what our tech support department (which is run by Lockheed Martin; they're supposed to know what they're doing -- at least they certainly charge JPL enough for their service) said was the approved way to delete old TM backups, and in several cases in the past, it has worked for me.  In any event, I didn't think I was deleting the TM dated folder through Finder -- I thought I was doing it through TM, as pondini recommended.  Silly me.
Etresoft (5:24am): It's a little scary that you said "I don't know of anyone who knows Time Machine well enough to actually update it."  Were you joking?  I definitely agree with your (and John Galt's) advice that "I wouldn't recommend any kind of interference with Time Machine, especially with the Finder".  In the future, I think I will just set up a separate partition on my external drive for TM backups, and let TM figure out how to thin itself out.
Lex Schellings (5:43am): "a magic black box" -- that's a very good take-away from this misadventure. Thanks for your advice.

  • Macbook pro runs slow

    Hello,
first appearance here, guys It seems that age or other digital debris is taking over my MBP. I followed this thread, in which John Galt and LexSchellings were being very helpful in solving other people's problems with slowness so now I'm trying to do the same (this thread: My MacBook suddenly started running slow ).
I used OS 10.6 until very recently but now updated to 10.9.4. I first noticed the slowness in Diablo III game and now I kind notice it watching movies in VLC. Sound comes first that motion.
Anyways, I downloaded EtreCheck and am pasting the results here, hoping the community could give a hand in fixing this problem.
    Thanks in advance,

Thank you for the quick reply. Amazing! Now, here's what I did meanwhile:
-unistalled Perian through the system preferences. However, it's still showing the icon although it says not installed.
-updated istat menus  but it's now erratic and not showing properly. I'll uninstall it
    -updated silverlight
-checked for updates in NTFS but there are none at the moment.
Question: how do I uninstall the gmail checker? It used to be a button on safari but it was no longer working. Then safari itself died until I got the Mavericks, and I had to change to firefox, so I guess I can uninstall both
I am thinking about upgrading to 8Gb but it just annoys me because I never experienced slowness before.
    Thank you again
PS: I think I managed to uninstall gmail checker.

    Hi, John:
You can make your own W7 installation/repair disk.
Select the repair option which will be on the lower left side of the install screen after you boot from the disk.
If you can't get the PC to recover and you can read the 25 character W7 product key on the bottom of the PC, you can use the install feature and install W7 back on your notebook.
Here are the instructions for doing so.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Why is the support so bad and expensive?

Putting in my serial number of a product that is now useless tells me I'm not covered by the support so I have to pay £25 to have someone call me.
When I put in all my details so I can phone Apple myself I then get given a premium rate number to phone and when I get through I start getting asked the same questiuons I answered online ( to get my case number ) so the call is going to end up costing more than it should. The case number is supposed to make the call quicker.
Why is help so expensive here?
Why can't I just email support?

John Galt, the poster already did that as he said in this discussion. He said:
I'm sure with the millions of dollars Apple make every day they can pay staff for support. Instead of that they create a forum where people can do their work for them for free.
I've posted details about my problem herehttps://discussions.apple.com/message/25581520#25581520
    John Galt wrote:

Otherwise, your only question "why is the support so bad and expensive" stands. It has been answered in this Discussion, which will effectively close it for those willing to help.

  • HT201303 Have just bought a iTunes card, asked me for 2 security questions in which the answers i have forgotten. What can I do?

Today I purchased a iTunes card, and it asked me for two answers to two security questions. I have forgotten what they were. Is there any way I can reset them? It sent a link to a email that I no longer have access to.

I want to purchase an app but it is asking for a security code which I don't know !!!!! How do I find that out?

    A code?  Or a question?

  • Airport Extreme best practice configuration for Sleep Proxy, DHCP/NAT and PPPOE

    Hi
I have recently bought a Airport Extreme and it is working well.  One of the reasons I bought is to take advantage of the Bonjour Sleep Proxy on it so I can wake my MAC up remotely from my iPad using the REMOTE app to stream things like iTunes etc...  I followed the set up instructions and basically let it configure itself.  I have an ISP router / modem which currently is providing DHCP services, NAT and PPPOE.
The Airport detected all of this and set itself up as bridge only.  The speed of the network outo to the internet is fine (more or less what it was before).  However, in doing a bit of research, I have found out that if I want the Airport to act as a sleep proxy, I need it to "host" the network.  I am not an expert in networking but from what I understand I need the Airport to be moved from "Bridge Only" to at least be providing DHCP to my internal network clients.
This has prompted me to ask what is "Best practice" when it comes to configuring the Airport given I want to have Sleep Proxy enabled.  I think the two options I have are as follows but would really welcome feedback on which is the best option to go for or if there are other options I should be thinking of
    (1)  Have the Airport perform DHCP for my internal clients and leave the ISP router/modem doing NAT
    (2)  Have the Airport perform DHCP and NAT.  I think to do this I need to turn the ISP router / modem into Bridge mode only.  (I've looked and I seem to have this option on the device.  It's an Irish ISP branded device but I think it is a Zyxel)
I have no reason to believe the ISP router / model is doing a bad job but given I understand the Airport Extreme is a reasonably high-end device (I think?) I am wondering if option 2 is the way to go.
In addition, during my research, I have also discovered that many people seem to have their Airport Extreme also handle PPPOE.  This is currently being done by my ISP router/modem.  I am  inclined to leave it this way (following the mantra if it isn't broken, don't fix it) but if there was a good reason to have the Aiport do this, perhaps I should make the switch?  Having said this, I have seen on this forum and others, some posts about problems with Internet connection drops when the Airport is handling PPPOE.
So, a bit of a long post, but if anyone has any information or perspective on this, I'd very much appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Dave

I forgot to thank you, John Galt. Yap, it solve my problem by restoring back the original firmware to 7.6.1. My unit is Airport Extreme 2012. I am still using double NAT because I cannot figure it out on how to set DHCP only in the Network tab.
My goal it to use the airport extreme to the internet and to share the internet to all my devices in the house. Just like my previous Accesspoints. Before I use AP+router Linksy$ WRT54G and D-l!nk DIR-655 without activating the NAT to share my internet connection and they work.
My problem is that when I set it to DHCP in the internet tab and DHCP in the Network tab in Airport Utility inorder to solve the double NAT situation, only one of all my devices (wired or wireless) can connect to the internet. Each time I connect the other device(s) to the internet my subscriber will verify my subscription (web browser based verification) in which I have to manually enter my account number, etc to validate my subscription.
So I stick to double NAT so that I can share the internet
Our broadband provider uses DHCP to link us to the internet. If I change the settings to Static in the Internet Tab, my broadband provider will not let me connect to the internet. In the Airport Utility if I set to static in the Internet Tab inorder to set it to solve the double NAT, a message box appear informing me that I have invalid beginning IP address in the DCHP range in the Network Tab when it appears that only the last 3 digits of the DHCP range is editable.
Is there any way of configuring the Airport Utility's Internet TAB to DHCP and Network TAB to DHCP to connect to the internet with all my devices without the double NAT and without the aid of another device such as AP or router or switch connected to the Airport or vice versa?
