In Safari Preferences, Safari is not listed as a Browser.

Yesterday, Safari's icon disappeared from the dock after I started the program (it bounced and then the "applications" icon stood in as the substitute icon).
When I click on the non-Safari icon, Safari starts up like normal and everything runs smooth.
Problem encountered: In Safari Preferences, under General: Default Web Browser, it does not list Safari (other web browsers are offered).
Currently, when I read my NetNewsWires and click on a link, one of these other web browsers opens up. I prefer Safari and I would like it back. I have browsed the Apple discussions and I have erased the icons folder and I have repaired permissions, but to no avail. Please help.

Hello Matthew:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You might try to trash the safari preference file. Close Safari. Trash com.apple.safari.plist. Restart and enter your personal preferences.

  • Upgraded IPad last week, now Safari is not listing my visited web pages below the web address.  Whenever I click on the book icon a bookmark box comes up instead of the usual 9 web page icons it used to show.  How do I correct?

How do I reconfigure my Safari web pages to show the 9 icons of pages I visited?  Since I upgraded last week, all I get now is a popup bookmark.  I've tried everything except the correct way to solve this problem.  I would like to see the web pages I've visited when I turn Safari on....any suggestions.

You can't - Safari on iOS 5 used tabbed browsing as opposed to the thumbnail/page browsing as on previous iOS versions.  You now open new tabs/pages via the '+' to the right of the tab bar, and you can close the selected by tapping the 'x' on its left-hand end (unless it's the last tab).

  • System preference SOUND does not list Samsung as a choice.  Picture is perfect, but no sound.

My Samsung shows up in the display settings, but not in the sound settings.  It's not listed.  Does Mac have an "add hardware" function?  System Preferences is reading the Samsung DISPLAY, but not the SOUND list does not include Samsung.  What middle step am I missing?  I'm sure there must be some way to get the Samsung sound recognized.

I have Thunderbolt as well, and I get a great picture.  I just don't get any sound.  i read a suggestion in this group to go to System Preferences>Sound>Output>and choose Samsung, but Samsung isn't a choice.  This is why I raised the question of how to add Samsung to the list.  I'm using my TV as a mirror.  Could that be the problem?  How do you use your HDTV?

  • Gaps appear with Safari, but not in any other browser.

Hi Guys, working on a site, heres a page from it:
    Text
If you view it in safari, it has gaps at the bottom of the
page in the border graphic, it renders fine in other browsers.
I have been able to fix this by adding a line break as the
entry in the sideshadow div, but i would prefer not to have to.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers

  • The tables are not listed in table browser (Designer) MS SQL 2005 SP3

Database: SQL 2005 SP3, using ODBC Connection
    Database name: Test_7.6_Reporting
    Business Objects XI3.1 SP2
When I open the table browser, I see all my databases listed.
If I expand these I see three folders - Information_Schema, dbo and Sys, it doesn't show anything after i expand dbo.
I need to know how to get these tables to show.
    Please advice. Thanks!

    Hi BK,
This seems odd. All I can think of is that there may be a security issue. Maybe it doesn't register you as dbo.  Check into the possible security differences between you and a user who can see those tables under dbo.
    Thanks!

  • I use iTunes 11.1.3 and books is not listed in preferences.  I want to add a pdf file into ibooks.

Hello:   I use iTunes 11.1.3 and under preferences,  books is not listed as an option.  I am trying to
add a pdf file to ibooks.

Sorry, I was only able to get back to this issue today, but it worked.
Thank you again Michael for your help. It was as simple as just buyng a free book from the iTunes store to create a Books area, then I was able to drag and drop my 3rd party book there.
Still, I feel that there should already be a Books area in iTunes, but perhaps I am the only one who has updated iTunes on a computer without any previously purchased books on it from the iTunes store.

  • FTP sharing service not listed under sharing preferenecs

    Hi All,
I need to enable FTP sharing on my MacBook Air (2011 OSX 10.7.2) but when I go to the Sharing settings under system preferences, FTP is not listed so I can't turn it on.  Any thoughts as to how I install the FTP service?
    Thanks!

I know how to enable it, it's just a stunningly bad idea.  What are you doing that couldn't be done better with SFTP in 2012?
There's a reason Apple no longer exposes a GUI control for it.
    But here:
    sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
Replace 'load' with 'unload' to turn it off again.

  • SSAS Dimension not shown in the Browser

    Hi All,
I have an Production Cube with 23 Measure Group and 18 Dimensions. This cube was good and they wanted me to do perfomance tuning in this cube based on Microsoft Suggessions. As per Microsoft, I find some attribute relationship errors(Since the atribute/Level
name has been chaged after attribure relationship was given) and Key column and name column was not properly defined(changes done in all dimension except one or 2). I corrected these and setted Default Measure as a Null Caluculated measure as in the Microsoft
Suggessions with the help of http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jorg_klein/archive/2009/02/06/ssas-speed-up-dimensions-using-a-null-default-cube-measure.aspx
Now, After deploying the solution i found that only 10 Dimensions are listing and 8 Dimensions are not listing in Bids Browser and in SSMS Browser.
    Thinks Checked:
    1. Visible properties of those 8 missing Dimension are checked, both in Cube -> Cube structure -> Dimension proerties and in the Dimension Atribute and level properties(AtributeHierarchyEnable and visible).
    2. Tried removing the  Default Measure.
3.Tried Deleting and deploying the cube.
    Things found:
while quering the Cube with MDX in SSMS. I am able to query the cube with the missing dimension and data is shown with out any errors.
Please help me break out this puzzle... I will reward you by marking the correct answer.. ;)
Please vote as helpful or mark as answer, if it helps Regards, Anand

    Hi Anand,
According to your description, the dimensions are invisible when you browser the SSAS cube in Microsoft Excel, however, you can query the dimensions in SSMS using MDX, right?
Based on my research, the issue can be caused by that the dimensions' Visible property were set to False. I have tested it on my local environment, when setting the dimension Visible property to False, the dimension is invisible in SSMS and excel, and we
can query the dimension using MDX.
So in your scenario, in order to avoid this issue, please ensure the Visible property of the dimensions are True.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite It's a nightmare!!  Itunes and Safari will not open Iphoto does not exist and the list goes on!!

I've spent all day trying to fix all the problems I'm encountered after updating to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro today.  It's been a waste of a day.  Nothing I have researched has helped.  I wish I never updated.  What is ironic that most of the things that do not work or Apple i products.  I don't understand cloud but have a feeling this is the cause of most of the problems.
After update my computer prompted me to say cannot connect to Icloud Drive (What I don't understand I cloud and didn't know I had an Icloud drive).
Itunes will not open at all and it does not even try to open(I've downloaded it again to no avail).
Iphoto has a Circle slash mark through it so it's not even avaliable.
Safari will not open just like Itunes.
Icloud in preferences just keeps spinning like it's looking for Icloud drive. (Even though I don't use this I feel it is the problem)
So I have no access to my music, my photos  cannot get on the internet with Safari Browser.
I'm afraid of what else probably doesn't work but I've been so consumed with the top three I haven't got to really explore the rest of all the apps.
My main concern at the moment are my pictures and my music.
Please Help, Thank you so much!!

iPhoto is still in your Applications folder. Your iPhoto Library is still where it was.

  • Flash plug-in not listed in the Safari installed plug-ins page

    Dear all,
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a Intel Imac and I'm facing the same problem since the first time I wanted to upgrade the version 10 of the Flash plug-in.
I have different accounts and various internet browsers (Safari, FireFox, Opera, Chrome) only Safari, on my main account (admin), causes problems. Actually the plug-in (10.3) is properly installed in  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/, so common to all accounts (the users' Internet Plug-Ins folders are empty) and it is visible from the System Preferences application.
    Internet Plug-Ins folder content:
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    CANONiMAGEGATEWAYDL.plugin
    CANONiMAGEGATEWAYLI.plugin
    DirectorShockwave.plugin
    Flash Player.plugin
    flashplayer.xpt
    iPhotoPhotocast.plugin
    JavaPluginCocoa.bundle
    npContributeMac.bundle
    nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt
    Quartz Composer.webplugin
    QuickTime Plugin.plugin
    QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
    VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin
But Safari doesn't lists the flash plug-in in the installed plug-ins page and returns a missing plug-in error message as I visit any website containing a flash movie. When I replace the current plug-in with version 10.0.r2 it works fine.
Before installing any upgrade I first run the uninstaller, restart the computer and then install the newest version. I tried many things to fixe this very annoying problem without success. I'm not going to list all of them but I mainly cleared Safari and Flash Player preferences, Safari Cache.db, removed all other plug-ins (to check for conflicts). I also used some tools as Apple Disk utily and OnyX to repair disk permissions and fix other possible problems.
I would be very grateful if you could help me!

    Hello Chris,
Any other suggestions? Because this story drives me crazy !
I don't know if it matters, but  Flash CS4 is installed on my Mac.
Event if it doesn't make sense I tried to clear any file related to the flash plug-in, Flash Player and Safari
    Safari:
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Cache.db
    Flash:
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Flash Player/
    ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/
    com.macromedia.Flash Player Debugger.app.plist
    Flash Player Debugger_00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CB846CCB_CrashHistory.plist
    Flash Player_00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CB846CCB_CrashHistory.plist
    com.adobe.flash-10.0.plist
    Flash 10 MRU
    flashplayer.xpt
I have uninstall Flash Player Debugger and the Flash Plugin
    removed all plug-ins from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Replaced all previous versions of Flash player by the latest version (10.3r183)
I ran all OnyX maintenance scripts and repaired disk permissions
After restarting the computer I installed the plug-in and replaced all previous plug-in version everywhere
    e.g. : /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Flash Player/Flash Player.plugin
Restarted again and then launched Safari. The plugin is well in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, but not listed in installed plug-ins list
I repeated this "procedure" several time, from different accounts, I also removed the admin rights on the problematic account and perform the installation from a new admin account without success!
I can drop any plug-in in the Internet Plug-Ins folder and I only have to refresh the the Installed Plug-ins page in order that Safari takes it into account. All, but the flash plug-in!
I really do no understand why Safari can't "see" newer plug-ins than the 10.0 version.
I'm lost and ran out of ideas!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My safari does not keep my history despite all the settings and adjustment i made to the safari preferences so as to be able to keep my browsing history. the browsing history is wiped out whenever i close safari.

i use macbook pro mid 2012, OS X mavericks. my safari does not keep my history desp[ite all the adjustments made to the settings at safari preferences. my browsing history are cleared whenever i exit safari. i dont know why. i want to try and re - in stall it . the safari is version 7.0.1. but i dont know how.

If you're having trouble making changes to files that are inside your home folder (represented by a house icon in the sidebar of a Finder window), or if you can't get changes to the settings of an application to stick, then please see below.
    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
