In search of a new external HD

I just purchased a new imac i7 and I need a new HD, in the past I've daisy chained 3 Hard Drives to my G5 with this new mac there is only a 800 fw and bunch of usb ports. Suggestions for using the two externals that I have with my old mac (400 fw one's and old Lacie the other a Maxtor) and adding a new HD. What are the better makers? I've looked at the Iomega 2TB desktop and I've looked at the WD 1TB. Should I buy two drives as the former two are almost full? Can you daisy chain the newer drives? I would use these primarily to store video footage that I edit.
thanks

Jennifer,
The top three I see being recommended on these forums are:
Lacie Quadra D2 Series
OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Series
G-Tech G Series
All are great brands with similar features. Personally I'm using the Lacie's (I've got 4 total, 3 daisy chained to my iMac via FW 800) however I wouldn't hesitate to use any of the others either.
Regards,
Roger

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • How to move Event (not necessarily connected to Projects ) and projects to new external drive

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and iMovie11 9.0.4 have a had very stressful time trying to clear down the Movies folder from my internal drive and get it across to a new external hard drive, as my 700gb drive on my 2009 iMac is practically full. I have taken a full back-up and also created a new 1.5 TB partition on the external drive. However I do not know how to get the Events and Projects across, and for iMovie to know that every thing is now on the new drive.
Initially I copied the 2 folders using finder, which seemingly worked but then I discovered that iMovie did not display the the new events, so I deleted the 2 folders from the external drive and tried manually moving the events in iMovie. This was very slow, with lots of spinning wheels and eventually iMovie crashed. So I moved the new Event copies I did manage to create into trash, but still iMovie was crashing.
I then, thinking something had become corrupted, I  tried to restore the Events folder and Projects folder from my backup, but that did not work as I got a message saying the there was not enough space to do the copies (why does it need extra space as I assume it would be overwriting the existing folders ?). So in desperation I did some forum searching and ended up deleting the com.apple.iApps.plist. Now iMovie seems to be working fine, and is displaying al the events from my internal drive (I have ejected all other drives), and I am back to square one (hopefully), however for some reason the 'month' folders I had previously created in each Event 'Year' have disappeared and all the, for example 2013 events, are now under the 2013 folder with no Month sub folders( I assume this is something to do with the preferences I had deleted ?)
I am hoping someone can direct me on the right path for getting the Events (not all of which are used in Projects) and Projects across to the new external drive, so I can free up space on the internal drive (and install Mountain Lion - my end goal).
I have been  trying to do all this since 0600 this morning, so if anyome can help it would be very much appreciated.
Jim (now grabbing a much needed beer !)

Do the external drive show up in iMovie 11?? I just drag and drop in iMovie and don't touch it or change in finder.

  • How do I get all my music from new external hard drive into itunes????

Just loaded all my music on my new external and need to put into itunes, how do I do that??

There may be other ways but I think the easiest is to just reinstall iTunes. when you reinstall it gives you the option to search for all music, just make sure the external is pluged to the PC and on when u do it. An other thing is with your music on a external, anytime u turn it off or unplug it you will get abunch of ! beside all the songs in iTunes until u turn it on and plug it back in

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

  • I'm able to view all files on a new external hard drive except the ones in the itunes folder?

Hello can anyone help with this... I recently had an external 500 gig Western Digital that stopped working.  I took to store and had them transfer the data onto a new external portable hard drive (1.5 gig)  At store they hooked up to Mac Book and showed me the files in the itunes folder, however when I connect the drive at home to my imac running tiger 10.4.6 none of the files are visible in the itunes folder.  All the other backup files are fine.  And when i right click on iTunes folder >Get Info  It says zero kb in the folder.  However I know the files are there because itunes is working and playing them fine.  And when I search for a band and open the folder of say "pearl jam" folder it then magically shows just those sub folder for that group in the itunes folder.
Any suggestions?  It seems that the files are definitely there I just can't view them.
    Thank you.

what i can suggest is drag the itunes folder to your desktop
    then go to itunes>preference>advance
make sure that you have a check on
    1. keep itunes media folder organize and copy file to Itunes media folder (im not sure if thats availble on lower version of itunes)
the go back to itunes>library>organize library put a check on consolidate file
itunes will automatically add up song on the itunes library
    if that wont work
you can redownload the song or apps on itunes store purchases

  • How do I format a new external Hard drive for Mac?

Simple question I know for many of you out there but I could do with some advice as I have never done this before. I would like to buy a new external hard drive to store my music and photos on. I will get one with firewire and usb2 connectivity.Could someone walk me through the steps needed to format and prepare a hard drive for use with my Macbook (if it is not already Mac formatted). Will any brand of hard drive work with Mac or are some better than others?

In addition to what Templeto Peck said, make sure that you select the formating to be OSX Extended.
As far as the best esternal drive, type into the "Search Discussion" box: Best external hard drive. This will bring you to several previouslly posted threads that discuss quite thoroughly your question. The following is extracted from one thread:
The best drives are those that use the Oxford 911 chipset. I like the Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC, but there are plenty of others that use the same chipset.

  • New Computer and New External Hard Drive - why do folders and photos not show up?

I replaced my desktop with a new laptop and external hard drive. I transferred photos from the desktop to the external hard drive. Lightroom 2 only shows the mapped hard drive, but does not show any folders or photos. Can Lightroom be set up to house all the photos on an external hard drive rather than using space on the internal laptop hard drive? Do the photos and folders need to be imported again into LR2? The photos are available for viewing when you search folders, but they open up in Photoshop not LR2.
What should I do to configure imports to be housed on the external hard drive? Is this wise? I will not be able to hold all the photos on the laptop internal hard drive. Photos used to be JPEG and DNG from D700. I am starting to see NEF. Does this replace DNG? Besides RAW I also need to have JPEG for other family members to access photos on other computers connected to the network. I am watching a tutorial DVD and slowly picking up how this all works. Let me know if I am not using the correct terms.
Hardware: HP laptop w/64bit, Buffalo 1TB RAID hard drive.

Lot's of questions here. I'll do a few.
Yes Lightroom can work with images on external drives. As many drives as you want.
I assume from what you said in your original post that you have had lightroom installed on the old desktop and now wish to transfer your catalogue and all files to the external drive and work from that.
So what you would do would be to transfer the entire contents of the lightroom folder on your old computer, except for any images, to the same location on your new laptop. This would include the catalogue files and any folders containing previews. Then you would copy all your image files to the new external hard drive. When you open lightroom you can then select the catalogue you copied from the old computer and open it. In the the folder pane in the library module you can then right click on one of the folders and select "locate missing files". Then you just need to point light room to the new location of your images. You may or may not need to regenerate all your previews.
I store all my images on external hard drives and I even run the catalogue and previews from the same external drives. I have backups of all my images of course. I have light room make backups of the catalogue to the C drive on my laptop so that the original and the backup are stored in different locations.
NEF is the proprietary file system for raw images used on Nikon cameras. DNG is a universal raw file format developed by Adobe. You can convert your files from NEF to DNG on import, but as Lightroom can read both types of files it is not necessary. At this point in time if you are using lightroom you should get similar results from either type of file.
To store imports on the new external drive you can you tell light room to copy the files to the new drive or you can manually copy the files to the new location and have light room import From the current location.
    Hope this helps
    Gordon

  • Help purchasing a new external hard drive

i need some info/help on choosing the feature set for a new external HD. the current one i'm using is only 5400 rpm with a 8 mb cache, connected via USB 2.0. i'm looking to replace it because when i play large video files off of the drive it drops frames left and right. Specifically 720p MKV files and 4 GB DVD ISO files. These files play just great when they're on the main internal HD. i do know i should be using 7200 rpm drive, in general really. should i be looking for a larger cache as well, 16 MB, 32 MB? should i get one with firewire 400 (it's all my machine has) or will usb 2.0 still be ok. i know usb 2.0 relies on the processor a bit for the transfer so i'm thinking firewire would be a better bet, especially with those processor eating full HD files? Am an idiot in this train of thought? I will be using the drive heavily, my mini is a media center so the drive holds all my music, movies and pics.
any info or suggestions for a hard drive are much appreciated, i'm looking for around 500 GB - 1 TB, and am hoping to spend around $100, if possible.
    thanks all.

I agree with that for sure... I just want to make sure that someone here on the board does not get the idea that you can purchase the ministack so that they can kill two bird with one stone. In other words I don't recommend purchasing the ministack for the purpose of having extra USB and Firewire ports thru the ministacks posts.
Now the mini stack works great as a firewire or USB hub, but only one or the other.
For those reading that are unclear, the hub on the mini stack allows you to keep you ministack plugged in either USB or Firewire and then you can plug external devices such as other HDD's, thumb drives, mice or printers.
Just to clarify for those searching for an external enclose, I love my mini stack.

  • New External DVD Issues

New Computer:  HP Envy m6 Notebook PC
New External DVD Drive:  LG SP60
    System:  Windows 8
Issue:  I place a DVD movie into external drive and there is no "auto play" function and no queue for me to start or play the DVD movie.
I have properly installed the external drive.  I have used the drive to install other items including my printer.  So it is not a mechanical or core function issue with the drive.
I was "forced" to download Cyberlink Media Suite; however, there is no button or queue to click to watch the DVD in the drive.  All items are related to burning a DVD.
I have tried several other DVDs that are in excellent condition on a totally separate device.  So I know it is not a DVD issue.
In the "my computer" it shows that there is a movie but it also shows that there are 3 main files, all with additional subfiles.  None look like they are "clickable" to play the movie.
I am searching for a simple one to two click process to play a DVD--not a process that requires several subscreen maneuvers.
Windows Media Player does not recognize the DVD movie either.
    Help please . . . .

    Hi,
I would not allow external USB devices to run Auto Play because virus can come in to play. For Windows 8, WMP is not a good product to play DVD. The DVD Player on CyberLink suite should play DVD's for you. You can also use a free product called vlc, which can play nearly all video formats.

  • ITunes library trouble - after adding new external HD

Hi. I was running out of room on an external drive, where I keep all my of my mp3s (my "media folder"). I purchased a new, larger external HD, plugged it in alongside the existing drive, and dragged and dropped everything in the empty new drive. So far, so good.
Now here's where I think I got a little too cute. Since the old ext HD was assigned the letter J:, I figured I could reassign the new drive as J:, and all would be jake --- all existing paths would point in the same direction, and iTunes wouldn't even notice the diff! (Or so I thought.) It actually went like this: reassign existing J: to letter O:; reassign new external (which was born L:) to J:.
When I reopened iTunes after the reassignment surgery, it was a tragic mess: all playlists gone, and the library had resorted to some way earlier version, with the dreaded exclamation points indicating that iTunes couldn't "locate" the music/media files.
I then proceeded to freak out, rapidly and rabidly re-selecting different iTunes library (.itl) files --- previous versions, latest versions --- but nothing was working. I fear all of this activity basically rendered the most recent library file all-but-irretrievable.
I've searched for all library files; I've restarted and rebooted. I'm not concerned about the mp3s themselves; I know where they all are, and can simply drop them all back into iTunes, no prob. What I'm still hoping to do is find that elusive, most recent library file and bring all of my precious, precious organization back.
Any ideas? I fear this is a classic example of (very) limited knowledge being a dangerous thing.
I'm running Windows 7; iTunes 11.1.0.126. MP3 files on an external, but iTunes folder on the C:/User drive, as by default (I think; not 100% sure).
    Many thanks!!

Microsoft's SyncToy utility is ideal for this.  You can set up a "folder pair" consisting of the root iTunes folder on your master disc and the corresponding folder in your backup disc (you have options to sync all changes on both sides or to just echo changes to the master, including deletes, on the backup). Once you've done the initial copy you can run this folder pair in SyncToy to achieve what you want.
Are you using your existing external drive just for media storage or have you set it up as a fully portable library (i.e., your iTunes Library.itl file, Album Artwork folders, etc. are on the same drive as the media)?  If not, take a look at tt2's tutorial on make a split library portable - this will allow you to have everything used by iTunes on the external drive (better for portability as well as being more robust against PC problems).

  • I have moved all my songs onto a new external hard drive but it has wiped my iPod clean. Although when I connect my iPod it's starts teh process of sync'ing - so many songs in I get a pop up advising the siong could not be read or written to?

I  have moved all my itunes onto a new external hard drive to free up space. It has wiped my ipod clean! I can still see the itunes on the new hard drive so I restored my iPod and tried to sync. Although when I connect my iPod it's in the process of syncing, so many songs in I get a pop up saying could not copy to my iPod as xyz song title could not be read or written. I click ok for this pop up to dissapear and then another pop up appears saying could not coyp to iPod because of unknown error.!!! Help I'm going crazy.

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location.  Select the location of your on external hard drive.

  • I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

I have been storing my Aperture and IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive that recently died.  Fortunately I've been using Time Machine to back up to a 2nd external drive.  How do I restore my libraries to a new external hard drive?

    This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....."  You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

  • Does anyone know how to do a text search in the new Safari for iPad iOS 7?

Does anyone know how to do a text search in the new Safari for iPad iOS 7?

The feature has been removed to make safari even less useable. You need to download a third party browser like atomic web browser to get the functionality you want back.
Like many new IOS 7 "features", safari on the ipad is a FAIL.
At least you can now bury safari in a folder containing hundreds of icons that you can only view 9 at a time.
