In search of a truly innovative Desktop

Hi, I'd like to bring this topic up on this forum, because I know there are many (former ) distro-hoppers and that's why I'd like to raise my question here.
After reading an article about Linux desktop environments mimicking other OS (let's face it, in some ways KDE resembles Vista and Gnome 2.30 resembles OSX a bit) and thus reducing the computing speed and uniqueness that Linux offers, I looked for alternatives. E17 looks promising, lightweight WMs are attractive too, but they all have one thing in common:
They all use windows as the main entity of the GUI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_%28computing%29 wrote: window is a visual area containing some kind of user interface. It usually has a rectangular shape that can overlap with the area of other windows. It displays the output of and may allow input to one or more processes.
And they display them flat:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_user_interface wrote: The term GUI is historically restricted to the scope of two-dimensional display screens with display resolutions capable of describing generic information, in the tradition of the computer science research at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The term GUI earlier might have been applicable to other high-resolution types of interfaces that are non-generic, such as videogames, or not restricted to flat screens, like volumetric displays.
So I'm asking you people here, have you on your Linux/GNU journey discovered a completely different GUI concept for which you don't need a volumetric screen?
Yes, CLI could be seen as the answer, but doesn't count this time (maybe except for ncurses or similar), because it has a rather restricted support for graphics output
For example this is what I found: http://s3d.berlios.de/ Still uses windows, but as a WM, it is very different.

I think you just hit on the crux of the argument against what you're looking for.  I think the closest thing to what you're asking for I've ever come across is Project Wonderland, and it isn't hard to figure out why that didn't catch on.  When it comes to information and communication technology, efficiency is tantamount to progress and innovation.  Having to click-and-drag a 3D virtual desktop around to find an open application, or walk an avatar over to a virtual water cooler to chat with someone online, or flip through a "shelf" of open containers clogging up screen space (see Project Looking Glass), might look cool. However, in the end it's just a waste of screen space, resources and time, and a massive amount of superfluous code to be written and maintained.  The appeal of say, a holographic 3D interface (a la the Jarvis interface in the Iron Man movie) is that it would be quicker to physically move application containers out of view than to use a mouse to minimize them.  Until that tech becomes available flat windows on the flat screens available to us are the most feasible option, and in the case of 3D holographic projection, flat containers for different projects/activities/apps would still be the most reasonable way to manage most tasks.
I'd also add that the uptick in touchscreen software development has more to do with the "cool" factor than true innovation, as present touchscreen technology lacks the precision and speed of buttons and keys, and sacrifices the speed of hardware-based calculation for the software-only approach.  This same "coolness" accounts for the use of MS Kinect on home computers, as well as the hideous "coffee table pc" that recently debuted.  Look at videos of these latter two technologies in action.  What are these folks doing?  In one case I found, motion capture video in the living room (totally improving our lives somehow ); in most every other case, quick-and-dirty resizing of digital images, with no real precision.  Not exactly useful, if you ask me.  Of course if you're curious, Looking Glass and Wonderland are still available to play with, though neither is actively developed.

  • Search pdf files with Windows Desktop Search

I recently installed Windows 7 and have attemped to use Windows Desktop Search to search for text contained in pdf files without success.  Today I found a reference to Adobe PDF IFilter v6.0 at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611.  I have Acrobat 8.2.1 installed on my computer.  Since I couldn't figure out if the iFilter had already been installed, I downloaded the ifilter60.exe file.  However, when I ran this exe file I didn't see any evidence that the filter was installed.  For example, the above web page mentions a ReadMe file file which is "included with the download" but I don't know where it or the plugin can be found.  I'm still unable to search within pdf files.  Is there anything special I need to do to install this IFilter?

Can't help directly on the question. However, the generic problem in Windows is that the search will only delve into a list of MS denoted file types. I spent a year looking for a file I had misplaced and did not remember the name of. The following link resolved my issue and now I can search for anything in any file. I followed the registry edit in the response. Editing the registry can be dangerous and you should back up the registry at a minimum unless you know what you are doing. I also do not know if the fix is available in Windows 7. As I recall, I did find it in VISTA. Good luck if you use this, but also be careful. Bill

Command + F usually does the trick.

  • Argo search of cFolders and Windows desktop search

Will Argo cover searching cFolders as well?
And what about Windows desktop search?
Unfortunately Windows desktop search does not cover cFolders and the search function within cFolders search no content (header information only, no attached documents).
My hope is that Argo will bridge this functional gaps.

    Hi Fred,
To 'Connect', you will need to confirgure the remote Mac's router to accept ARD connections.
This is done by accessing your router via the manufacturer's software. This can usually be accessed by tapping the internal IP into a browser. You will have to get your parents to do this unless the router is setup for remote management.
Within this software, there should be a section called 'services' or 'firewall services'. You need to add five new services (1 for each of the following port numbers - 3283, 5432, 5900, 5988 & 5989), give them names like ARD1, ARD2 and so on, not critical, just helps you manage them in the future.
Within each of these new services, you 'port forward', all you need to do is input the remote Mac's internal IP number (192.168.0.xx) to every ARD service. This basically tells the router which Mac to look at when you connect via ARD.
This should be everything - if not keep asking...

P.S. You did have Remote Desktop service started on the remote Mac, not yours?

  • VISTA is truly innovative-- David Pogue "proves" it!!  :-)

In one of the funniest, most wonderful short videos out there, David Pogue, noted author, tech columnist for the NY Times, shows how, after 5 years and 50 milliion lines of cod, Microsoft has produced an "innovative" new OS. (Ha! Ha!)
He systematically proves how they did NOT rip off the Mac OS.
Check out today's NY Times... go to the tech section... he has both an article and a video. If you are at all a Mac fan, you'll get a kick out of it. Bill Gates & the folks at Microsoft are probably livid! Cupertino really is the R & D arm for Microsoft... too bad Apple didn't patent all their new interface ideas!

  • Adobe Connect Desktop App

    Hi,
This is probably a simple fix for someone in Adobe. I'm trying to download the latest Adobe Connect Desktop Application for Windows.
The download link keeps going to connectusers.com which is down for reasons known.
Is there another link to download from?
    Thanks

Just sharing a quick search tip to help in the future.
I just ran this search query https://www.google.com/search?q=adobe+connect+desktop and the description of the second search result is "Adobe Connect Desktop. This AIR-based application helps meeting hosts quickly manage and edit their meetings from their desktop. Hosts can also access ..."
In case you get stuck while searching, you can always use the search keyword 'site' (read here) to narrow down your search to adobe.com like this.

  • The function "Search" of iCal doesn't find (iMac)

    Hello.
Since a few days, the function "Search" inside iCal, on my desktop iMac, doesn't work. I get no answer or 1 or 2 occurences of a name or a word, even if , when checking by myself day by day, I find the item much more than 2 times.
Though, it seems to work on my iPad (sharing the same iCal's database).

    Hello,
After downloading the software, I tried to open it and I received the following message:

What do I need to do?  How can I run this application?  Why is it not working in the first place?

    A working solution!!!!!
I have tried the numerous links to the above that others people have found and have always come up with the message 'Desktop Manager is not working - Windows is looking for a solution'.  Finally I have found one that works without having to adjust any settings on your PC or uninstall any others programs.
I am with O2 Uk and did a search on Google for Blackberry Desktop Manager for O2 [Try the same with your own service provider's name].  After checking out a number of sites I ended up on a RIM page that I had not seen before which gave me a dropdown box for the Desktop Manager options for Windows and MAC OS's and all the Blackberry handsets.  I clicked on Windows OS and got the attached link
    https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/Downloads/contactFormPreload.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB06...
It loaded OK and found and installed my Bold 9700.   I set up and ran the 2 way configuration and normal service has been resumed!!!
I would recommend downloading and using Revo Uninstaller as this seems to give you a cleaner uninstall of programs, registry keys and redundant folders than any other uninstall.
    Happy Synchronizing!!!!!!

  • Search not working in mail

When I do the usual search in my apple mail, desktop version, I get no results.
In other words:  Search for John Smith in ALL, nothing
Search for [email protected] in ALL nothing
Any suggestions how to fix this?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    ls ~/Library/Mail/V2/*/*/.dontIndex | grep -v Deleted
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Your email address(es) may appear in the output, so anonymize before posting.

  • How to do full text search in mobile apps?

    Hi,
I want to be able to use the FTS module in sqlite to do leverage the powerful full text capability in it. But I was sad to learn that module are disabled in AIR (Has anybody gotten FTS module to work in AIR?)
Is there any way I can use the FTS module with SQLite. Android native developers use this all the time so I think not having this is a serious limitation for text based apps.
My alternatives right now are to:
Write my own indexer and scorer (lots of work)
Do full text search on the server side (breaks offline capability)
I hate both options. I am leaning toward righting my own indexer but what do you guys suggest I do?

I've got nearly the same concern. I want to add full text search on a mobile and desktop application, without any server.
I read in archived discussion that the FTS support was already considered before air 2.0.
    Will we see it soon?

  • Spotlight/Finder Doesn't Search In ASP and other file types?

.asp and .c file types are nothing more than .txt files with different extentions..
Am I correct in thinking that Spotlight doesn't search inside these files? I have a folder full of asp files and spotlight doesn't seem to find anything when I type text that I know is inside one (as a test)
It does appear to search INSIDE .html files in the same folder.. Can you add different file extentions that spotlight will search into?
If not, then "Spotlight" is much ado about nothing as google desktop search, X1 and the msn desktop search (Windows) released years ago search inside ALL files..

Spotlight makes a content index for files using mdimporter, and that process depends on mdimporter modules for the specific file type. Thus in /Library/Spotlight you will see a collection, such as Microsoft Office.mdimporter, of "extras" for special file types. There are also the built-in ones in /System/Library/Spotlight. If you installed Xcode/Developer Tools, there should be a SourceCode.mdimporter, which I imagine would index the asp and c files. If not, some people have modified it to also index php files, see this discussion:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050514182520714&query=spotlight%2 Bphp%2Bfiles
at MacOSXHints. I think you could do something similar (at your own risk of course) for other pure text based files. Be sure to expand the the replies and read them.

If you use Outlook 2013,Outlook items will no longer be searchable via the Window Shell (Start menu and Windows Explorer). So, when searching for items in Windows Desktop Search no Outlook items will be returned in your search.
