  • Headphone Jack doesn't work and internal speakers are stuck in mute.

So I have an 18' macbook pro with a 2GHz Intel Core i7 and running version Mac OS X (10.7.5). I recently dropped my computer off my lap while my headphones were still in. The headphone jack smashed into the computers headphone output jack I took out the headphones and they still work but now no matter what pair of headphones I use I cannot hear anything when plugged in. As well when I take out the headphones the sound output does not switch back to internal speakers but says Digital Out. I know the speakers work because when I was messing the out jack because I read when a red light is on inside the jack (which it goes on and off) means it is stuck in mute. That however has not worked so far and neither has putting in and taking out the headphone jack.

Use OnyX to clean your system and User cache files. It's free to download. Just click on the "Automation" tab, check the boxes and run it.

  • Mac Air(OSX) stuck on mute! no devices visible in System Preferences Sound Output/Input

I have a MacBook Air, Version 10.6.8, Processor 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
My Sound is stuck on mute:
-when I go to System Preferances>Sound and go to Output or Input, under "Select a device for sound input/output" there is nothing listed. There at the bottom also the Mute checkbox is also stuck and can't be changed.
It always gets stuck after leaving it in sleep longer (3x till now).
1)The first time this happened, I restarted the PRAM (OPTION+COMMAND+P+R after restarting it) and it helped. The sound worked after that.
    2) The second time the method from 1) didn't work, so I tried updating COMBO and then I restarted the SMC (CONTROL+OPTION+SHIFT+POWER BUTTON) and it helped everything was fine after that. The sound worked after that.
    3) The third  time (all three time in a row)  nothing worked (I tried):
          -restarting the PRAM
          -restarting SMC
-Reparing Disk Premissions in "Disk Utility"
          - I tried deleting some files in the Library>Preferences>...
          - I tried restarting
          - I tried inserting headphones (still no sound)
          - I tried playing some music in the Garage Bend
           - I tried restarting
           - I did not update COMBO the escond time (it would be crazy to update combo everytime this happens, and it happened three days in a row)
Please help me. I have no sound for a week!!!

  • My Macbook Air is stuck on mute any suggestions on how to fix this?

Does anyone know what to do when the MavBook is stuck on mute?

Is the actual sound icon showing a zero volume setting (mute), or is the situation simply a lack of sound?
The predominant resolution to this situation, according to most recent threads on this subject seems to indicate a possible hardware problem that should first be taken up by Apple, preferably by a Genius Bar appointment to determine whether the unit requires a major service.

  • Macbook stuck on mute

    hi -
i have a macbook that is stuck on mute. you cannot increase or decrease the volume. the option to adjust the volume is greyed out and the mute button remains checked.
i have inserted and removed headphones several times. there is no red light coming from the headphone jack.
any suggestions besides reloading the OS?
    Thanks!

When I brought my MacBook Air to the Genius Bar they coiuldn't diagnose the issue, so they had to send it somewhere else for repair. I didn't have Apple Care so I payed $180 for the repair. They diagnosed it and replaced the logic board.
After that issue, half my scren turned green and my display hinge was loose as well. It's been in repair quite a few times for other issues too.
I own a few vintage and new Apple products and the only two devices that were always bad and caused me an abandance of frustation were the iPhone 4 and the MacBook Air (2010). I own an iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro (late 2011) and they have been bulletproof so far.

  • My computer is stuck on mute?

My computer only makes sound when my earphones are plugged in but when I pull them out, the computer (A macbook) gets stuck on mute. The volume logo dims and the earphone jack lights up red.
    I'v tried
    cleaning out the earphone jack
    restarting
plugging the earphones in and pulling them out
messing with the sound panel in system preferences (it doesn't offer speakers as a option under 'sound output', the only option it offers is earphone jack.)
    Please help!

I lost my internal speaker as a choice in output sound in system preferences.  There is nothing on my output list.  Now everything is stuck on mute...how do I fix this?

It was red earlier, but not now.
Then try again. The red light indicates that an analog plug jammed the digital audio-out port in the "mute" position. The spec for the tip-to-shoulder distance is apparatenly tighter for digital ports than it is for analog plugs.
On my MacBook Pro, I insert the headphone plug only enough to hear that I have proper sound, and then quit pushing. In this photo, the headphones are giving proper sound quality and separation but the jack's stop shoulder, on a pair of name-brand headphones, is obvioulsy not touching the computer case.
The iMac has the same kind of port. Don't stick plugs in all the way--just until you here proper sound.

  • Headphones won't go in the headphone jack and volume stuck on mute

my headphones will only go about halfway into the headphone jack and the volume is stuck on mute. it looks like there is something sticking out inside of the headphone jack.

  • Mute Button on Capacitive Strip Stuck in Mute Pavilion dv6700

    Hello.
I own an HP Pavilion dv6700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC with an AMD Turion X2 64 processor.  It was purchased in the fall of 2008.  My problem with it lies in the QuickPlay button strip at the top of the computer.   At the end of December this last year, I turned on my computer and the mute button on the strip was stuck in the “MUTE” position.  I can touch the button and the screen will show the volume being muted and unmated, but no sound will come out of either the speakers or the headphone jack.
After doing plenty of research online through forums and other things, I reinstalled the original audio drivers, and the problem was fixed for the rest of the day.  However, upon shutting down the computer that night and then restarting it, windows update had run on the computer, installing an update for Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221, and the same problem occurred.  I tried to restore my computer back to the day before, and yet the problem persisted.  I tried to reinstall the audio driver like the day before, yet the problem persisted.
After doing more research online and taking my computer to the Geek Squad for advice, they suggested that it was probably the BIOS system that needed an update.  I currently have the BIOS version F.30 released on 04/24/2008.  I looked for the latest update on the HP website, and the most current I could find was F.58 A released on 07/08/2008, but the problem is it says it is for notebooks with an Intel processor only (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-62510-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...).
I have an AMD processor, as stated before.
Is this the correct solution, finding and installing the latest BIOS?  I did find a page on the HP website stating this was the correct course of action (Mute Button on Capacitive Strip Does Not Work: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01785843&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...)
Is there a BIOS update for an AMD processor that I can download and install to correct this problem?
Thanks for your help in advance.

That didn't seem to do it.  I downloaded the file from the HP website and tried to run and install, and a window popped up saying that this BIOS was not for my Notebook PC.  I clicked ok, and then a Windows window popped up saying the program had not installed correctly.  It then asked if I would like to reinstall using the recommended setting or with an option to say it installed correctly.  I just closed the window without choosing either (I've heard that bad things happen if the BIOS goes funny--i.e., you cannot turn on your computer, etc.)
I think the problem was the BIOS update was for the dv6700z notebook, whereas I have a regular dv6700.  No extra letters on the end.
Any other suggestions, with this update or with solving my problem?

  • IPad 2 "stuck" on mute and how I fixed it.

Did not see a discussion related to this, so forgive me if I'm addressing something that's already been addressed.
Sometimes I notice that I'm not getting sound from my apps, even with the sound turned up. I discovered that this happens when the side switch is set to "lock rotation."
What happens is, if I have the sound already muted and then go into settings to change the function of the side switch from "mute" to "lock rotation," the system remains in mute. Turning up and down the volume has no effect.
The work-around for me is to go back into settings, change the function of the side switch back to "mute," and then toggle the switch until the screen indicates I am off mute.
Then I can return to settings, once again change the slide switch function to "lock rotation," and use the volume up/down button to mute or unmute the sound.
IMO, this is a bug. To me, when the system is muted, and the function of the switch is changed to "lock rotation," the volume up/down button should then enable the user to "volume up" to turn off mute.
    Hope this helps someone.

In IOS-2, the mechanical switch controlled the auto rotation on/off.  Mute was a soft switch.
In IOS-3, the mechanical switch controlled the mute.  Auto-rotate on/off was a soft switch.  This was Apple's effort to get some consistency among all IOS devices.
Thie ability of the user to change the function of the switch was introduced with IOS-4 to satisfy the vast multitude of whiners that wanted to control the auto rotation with the mechanical switch rather than a software switch.  I am not kidding when I say that posters alleged that they turned auto-rotate on and off a hundred times each day and they wanted the convenience of doing it with the mechanical switch.

  • While using FaceTime, the sound is stuck on mute, how do I get it off?

For about a month when I call someone on FaceTime, they can see me but not hear mr.  What should I do?

Tap the mute symbol left of the end call button.
If it's not working properly, try restarting or resetting your iPad.  Here's how:  Turning on/off and resetting, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4130

  • Sound stuck in Mute and volume keys won't work

The other day, I happened to Mute my sound. Now, it will not let me return to having sound. I have tried the volume up and volume down keys, but they don't respond. I've tried adjusting the sound using System Preferences, but to no avail, since there is nothing listed in the "output" window. I do get a start-up sound when the system boots up, so I don't think the speakers have died. And the sound still doesn't work if I plug headphones into the jack... anyone?
    Thanks -
    ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

thanks - I tried that - for some reason, I decided to just back up recent files and reload the 10.3.9 update and now all the keys are working again.... Thanks for your input - I don't know what little demon was posessing the ibook, but I'm glad reinstalling the update killed it.
