In the bookmarks toolbar, I want ONLY the icons, not words -- how do I do it?

Once upon a time, there was a way to dump the description of the items in the bookmarks toolbar and leave ONLY the icons, but, when the mouse scrolls over them, the descriptors pup on.
It is that way on my laptop, but, after a wipe are re-install of my xP, I cannot get my bookmark toolbar to do that.
How is it done ?
thanx

  • How do I get toolbar bookmark items to display in the bookmarks toolbar instead of in the Bookmarks menu | Bookmarks toobar submenu?

When I add bookmarks to the bookmarks toolbar, they don't appear on the bookmarks toolbar (duh...) but appear instead in the Bookmarks Toolbar submenu inside of the Bookmarks menu.
How do I get them to appear on the bookmarks toolbar itself?

You can check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key to make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:
    *"View > Toolbars"
Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:
    *View > Toolbars > Customize
*Firefox menu button > Options > Toolbar Layout
*Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
*If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

I only want the favicons from an addon to appear on the bookmarks toolbar, not with the underlined text. How to do this?
This problem doesn't happen with any other toolbar. And this problem didn't happen with an earlier version of firefox. Please Help!
    Thanx, BassMann.

If you only want the favicons and not the names of the bookmarks on the bookmarks toolbar, you can do that with the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4072/ Smart Bookmarks Bar] add-on.

  • How do I set the bookmarks toolbar to text only? Changed to Icon + Text in v4.

I used to have only text in the bookmarks toolbar in version 3. Now that I'm in version 4, I see a folder icon or the website's icon and the text.
I can't seem to disable this - no preferences or context menu options that I can find.
    Thanks for your help.

You can do that with the Bookmarks Deiconizer extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmarks-deiconizer

  • Cannot reduce the bookmarks toolbar to favicons only in FF 4.0 beta 1, even after opening "properties" & backspacing all text.

In Firefox 4.0 beta 1, cannot drag a favicon to the bookmarks toolbar, then open "Properties" and clear the "Name" text so that only the favicon is displayed--it defaults to favicon + web address. This trick allowed me to fit in more favicons on the toolbar in previous versions of Firefox.

  • Bookmarks change place in the Bookmarks Toolbar, I cannot pinpoint the cause.

I have the following configuration on my home netwok:
1 PC running Windows 7 32bits and latest Firefox release
1 PC running Windows 7 64bits and Nightly Firefox
1 Laptop running Windows XP SP3 and latest Firefox release
1 Tablet running Android Jelly Bean and Firefox for Android
I sync all of them, only bookmarks and Add-ons.
Every time the order of the bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar changes, I reorder them and they change again the day after.
I don't know if the cause is related to sync or not.
I don't know if it is related to using the Nightly version.

Do you mean to unlink which device, the "Nightly" PC ?
All my devices are set to sleep at the end of the day, even the Tablet disconnects from the Wi-Fi network when the screen is Off (a new feature in Jelly Bean). Would it be the same as unlinking the devices? I think so. And it happens all the same.
Does Sync saves something locally in each device that tells also the order of the items? Or does Firefox sort the items on the Bookmark Toolbar when it starts?
    BTW, to complete the picture:
    * the "new" order of the items is not always the same, and it does not follow a specific sorting order (like alphabetic)
    * The order changes only once, then it stays the same. Only when I reorder the items it happens again the next day.

  • Is there any way to default to the Bookmarks Toolbar when clicking on the Bookmarking star in the Address Bar?

When adding a bookmark by clicking the star in the address bar, the bookmark automatically goes to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder, is there any way it can automatically go to the Bookmarks Toolbar? This is a minor inconvenience.

    Try:

I keep trying to customize the Bookmarks Toolbar, but I can;t make text appear in any size, and I can't make the icons larger (like the size shown in your help instructions on this topic). All I have is tiny, blank icons and no text to go with it.

  • In the left hand top I have the current page, beneath that the bookmark toolbar, and beneath that the home page. To the right top is a blurred image of my upper desktop. Cannot get a full screen with Firefox and see no remedy.

That's a very interesting find. A couple people have been reporting this. But we thought it was Google breaking that page on purpose because they plan to remove that special Firefox search page. They think it's too old and want people to switch to the newer one. But I'm still not sure why being signed into Google breaks that page (and signing out fixes it), I believe Google is at fault here and needs to update the code on that page.
The new Google search page for Firefox is:
    <br>'''about:home'''
    Screenshot:
    <br> http://i.minus.com/iewA9S.PNG
It's a special page built into the Firefox browser. That's why it has a weird website address that doesn't look like normal websites that use http://www., .com, .net, or .org.

  • How do I get the bookmarks toolbar to show on top like before?

I can only get my bookmarks to show up in the library or in the library on the sidebar; I want them on top in a toolbar format.

Check that the Bookmarks Toolbar is visible and that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is still placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar.<br />
If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" (Linux, Windows)
    * Check that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

The bookmarks toolbar is there but has no item buttons on it. How do I get the items back for this toolbar?
Also would like to know if the toolbar can be put on the same line to make more room on the page (drag & drop) ?? Like the menu & bookmarks toolbar could/should fit on same line. This would add more page view...

    Thanks

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
    * If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" then click the "Restore Default Set" button
You can only move the content from a toolbar onto other toolbars if all toolbars support that feature. You need to check that in the options of each toolbar.

  • Why can't I remove the long BOOKMARKS button from the right hand end of the bookmarks toolbar?

This button is completely superfluous and takes up space on my Bookmarks Toolbar. How do I remove it please?
To be clear, I have the 'normal' bookmarks button on my main toolbar that opens up my bookmarks in the panel on the left. What is the purpose of the Bookmarks button on the right end of the bookmarks toolbar that opens up the same bookmarks in a different presentation, and how do I get rid of it?

Thanks very much Vivek and the-edmeister, now I understand and have managed to remove the unwanted button. I beieve the ergonomics of all this are very poor - starting from the fact that 'customize' gives the impression you are in control of what appears and what doesn't, but this is confused by the fact that Firefox is also adding and removing icons depending on what toolbars are showing. Also, and the main cause for this problem, the icon I want to remove from Bookmarks toolbar does not show on Bookmarks toolbar in 'Customize' view. AND, there's the fact that the icon doesn't even look the same in the two views so it's not obvious that moving the little button (in customize) will affect the larger button with text that's on another toolbar!
For other people with the same problem, my re-writing of Vivek's original solution so it works on my system is this:
Please try this: right-click on the '''+''' after the last tab and '''Customize''' and click, hold and drag the star icon that has the little down arrow beside it from any of the toolbars on which it appears (it probably <b>won't</b> be in the Bookmarks toolbar!) into the Customize mini window.
    Thanks again both.

  • How do I get the bookmarks toolbar's width to autofit to its buttons when placed next to tabs?

FF4: I'd like to be able to put the bookmark toolbar right next to my tabs (not above or below). However, when I do this, the width of the toolbar does not shrink down to fit only the buttons, i.e. the bookmarks toolbar takes up a lot of blank space.
This happens whether placing it on the right or left, or when placing tabs in the bookmarks toolbar.
To ask the question in another way, is there any way to autofit the bookmarks toolbar to its contents when placing next to tabs?

    Thanks for the reply.
That's actually exactly what I intend to do. I've tried this both with and without the extension installed. The attached image includes two screenshots: (top) bookmarks toolbar to the left and (bottom) to the right.
When placed to the left, the tabs end up way over to the right and not up against the bookmark toolbar's contents, restricting the amount of space for tabs to fill.
When placed to the right, the bookmark toolbar's contents are not right justified and, again, restricting room for tabs.
    Hopefully this clarifies my question.
