    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Note with iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show all your purchases with cloud icons that allow them to be streamed or downloaded from Apple's servers.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • HT1589 My laptop memory is getting very full, mostly with music in I tunes.  I have an external hard drive and I would like to move all the Itunes library to the external drive but I am afraid I will screw up I tunes and I won't be able to find and or syn

My hard drive is filling up with music files in I Tunes.  I would like to move them to my external hard drive but I am afraid when I do that I won't be able to sync my music to my devices.  I have just added I cloud and signed up for I Match.  I wonder if this would allow me to move all my I tunes files to the external drive.  What will be the impact of this.  I believe I can set the default to the new location for future downloads

Move the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X: is the letter of the drive. Hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose then browse to the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.

  • I'm retiring my old computer (windows xp) to a new computer (windows 7). How can i easily move my itunes music from the old computer to the new computer? i have my playlists organized in my old computer, i would like it to stay that way in my new computer

i'm retiring my old computer (with windows xp) and bought a new computer (with windows 7). How can i easily move my itunes music from the old computer to the new computer? i have my playlists organized in my old computer, i would like it to stay that way in my new computer. I also have my ipods, iphone sync'd in the old computer so i want to make sure that things won't get messed up (my apps, playlists, etc) when i move over everything to the new computer and sync all my devices with the new computer.
Thanks in advance for the tips.

Make sure the XP box is upgraded to the latest version of itunes. Also make sure it's using the itunes media folder layout as explained here, because that's what the W7 is going to be using.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3847
Install itunes on the new W7 PC.
Get these folders from the XP machine
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
And put them here on the W7 machine
    C:\users\username\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

  • Itunes directories in my music folder??

I’m wondering here, can anyone explain to me what the reason that there are multiple iTunes directories and config files in my music folder? This is a place where I keep my music and there is no facility i can see to have iTunes move its directories/files elsewhere or atleast in its own program directory, and these directories are regenerated if deleted once iTunes is started again.
It seems strange. This is a folder within my profile directories where one would keep their music files and my music folders (grouped my artist then subdirectories for albums). I in no way want to see program data mixed in with my music. This will cause me to back up that program data and have to deal with it again when I go to restore my music from my network storage device back to the local machine in the advent of a failure
Can anyone help me with this issue of poor programming on the part of Apple? I mean is there a setting that I’m not seeing in the preferences that would remove or move these files and folders out of my music directory WHERE I ACTUALLY KEEP MY MUSIC DATA?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is the standard layout of the iTunes library.
The top iTunes folder is normally placed inside your profiles "Music" folder on both Macs & PCs. iTunes has long since morphed into a media player rather than just a music player but until both the Mac & PC operating systems change thier default set of pre-defined user folders to include a media folder then Music is as obvious a place as any to put the library.
There are two main components to the library, your media files (all inside the red outline) & the database files (everything else). An advantage of keeping everything together is that you do in fact backup both the database & the media files when you make your backups. This model is much easier to archive & restore (either in part or as a whole) than the hidden databases, caches & licence files that Windows Media Player uses.
I would heartily recommend that you learn to live with the layout that iTunes want to use, but if you prefer you can create a new library anywhere you want. Just press & hold SHIFT immediately after clicking on the icon to launch iTunes for options. Once you've created a library elsewhere you can disable to options to *Keep iTunes Music/Media folder organised* and *Copy files to iTunes Music/Media folder when adding to library*. You can then maintain your Music folder as you wish and import into iTunes only those items that you want it to know about.
FWIW I have my library in D:\iTunes and redirect Windows Media Player to D:\iTunes\iTunes Media to look for content... I also manually manage the file & folder names because personally I don't like iTunes' habit for clipping these to about 40 characters.

  • Why does my finder nest an iTunes music folder within my music folder and not let me delete it?

I'm working on the arduous task of combining and winnowing down my multiple iTunes libraries and music folders onto a single drive. The last thing I have to do is carve out the duplicate tracks from a time I tried to move my library to another drive and it rewrote all of my tracks and added a "1" to the file name (making it virtually impossible to use duplicate finder siftware.
In going systematically through every artist and album folder in my new iTunes/Music folder I found a subfolder called "Music" which essentially mirrors the folder it resides within. In that folder is another "Music" folder with exactlay the same comtents. It's like those russian dolls.
At first I though I found the reason why my folder was taking so much space on my drive (1.4 tb when it should noly be about 70 gb), so I though I would just delete it--but it will not allow me to, giving me the error code -8072.
    Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks for your time.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Your library is in the newer layout and you are trying to move/have moved the media folder (red outline) to D:\Music. The extra Music folder is supposed to separate other types of media within the iTunes Media folder.
If you don't want (or have room for) your library in the usual location of <User's Music>\iTunes, then you are usually much better off moving the entire iTunes folder to the root of your prefered drive, e.g. as D:\iTunes and accessing the relocated library by holding down shift as you start iTunes. The media folder would then be D:\iTunes\iTunes Media and music would end up at D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\<Artist>\<Album>. Keeping this structure make moving the library easier in future.
Since it seems you've already started moving things around it is probably too late to move the library in a single step. See Make a split library portable for details of how you can proceed.

Notes on Transferring OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks…
Most MP3 capable devices should play OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks.
If you intend to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an Apple® device, note the following…
iTunes® v9.0.2 (or newer) is required.
The Apple device must be formatted for use with Microsoft® Windows®.
The iTunes setting 'Manually manage music…' must be enabled for the device before you can complete the transfer. Adjust this setting in iTunes as follows…
Connect the iPod® to your computer.
If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer).
In iTunes, locate the device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click the device.
    The 'Summary' screen is displayed.
Place a checkmark next to 'Manually manage music…'.
    Click the 'Apply' button.
The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and the changes are saved.
    If desired, close iTunes.
Note that if an Apple device is connected to your computer, you can choose to simultaneously transfer a title to the iTunes Library and the Apple device. If you wish to only transfer a title to the iTunes Library, you must first disconnect the Apple device

    mlvov,
I did as you said and went to the icloud control panel on my Windows 8 Laptop to be sure I was looking at the correct folder for my photo stream.  All my "shared" albulms pushed to my Laptop and are up-to-date with the exception of the "photostream" album. If I create a "shared stream album" and place photo's in it on the phone; I can see the photos on my laptop. I dont get it. I had a iphone 4s and had zero isues and now with my new nifty iPhone 5s it doesent work.
What am I not doing correctly.
    Thanks,
