In the last week, Firefox slows down until it's unusable after about 30 mins

As per the title. Firefox slows down until it is almost completely unresponsive the longer it is left open. When it is restarted, it works fine for a while but soon slows down a lot.
I have about 50 tabs open and have never experienced this issue at all. I still have plenty of RAM free. When it's slow, even tasks such as opening menus or using the awesome bar slow down massively.
I suspect a tab is at fault but can't think of an easy way to determine which one.

I'm using the same antivirus for the last year and never had this issue before. Disabling antivirus doesn't help either.

There are several other similar posts in this forum with the answers. Your post appears third in my Google search today looking for a solution so I thought I'd add the solution here as well.
It is obviously a bug in either (or both) Firefox and the NYT.
The quickest solution is to simply go to the VIEW Menu in Firefox, then the ZOOM option and choose RESET.
I use Mac and this happens in Firefox 3.6.10. It does not happen in other browsers like Safari, Chrome and Camino, and it did not occur before last week.
It has also occurred in the iOS version of Safari on iPad. Not sure how to fix it there.

  • I just recently installed a software update in the last week. Slowed computer down

I just recently installed the lastest update through apple, and ever since, my 4-finger swiping has slowed down significantly. I haven't put anything else on the computer to make it run slower, and it is defintely beause of the update. Thanks.

Open Activity Monitor. Select All Processes instead of My Processes at the top and then reorder everything by highest CPU usage. Take a screenshot and post the image here.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • My four-month-old macbook pro's battery when fully charged is now down to 2 hours life from 7...in the last week. Why?

I bought my macbook pro 13" about four months ago and have been in love with it ever since - especially as compared to my old PC laptop, the battery stays cool and lasts forever when I am working. Best charge was 7 hours. However, in the last week I have noticed the battery suddenly becoming hot when I unplug the charger, and the best length of time I can get on a full charge is 2 hours.
I have made sure all the settings are for prolonged battery life - which they've been since I first set up - and turned off all programmes running in the background, but this has not made any difference. I have been using iMovie a lot lately which takes a lot of battery which is probably why I didn't notice the battery being low as it automatically seems to make the battery slump to 2 hours when it's on. It's off now, and my battery won't improve.
I have also now followed the instructions (below) about calibrating, but this has had no effect. My housemate bought the same model a month ahead of me, uses it probably slightly less, but his is still 7 hours for a charge.
    Is my battery faulty?
    Calibration instructions used:
PowerBook G4 (15-inchDouble-Layer SD), MacBook (all models), MacBook Pro (all models), and MacBookPro (17-inch) (all models)
Thebattery calibration for the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) and anymodel of MacBook or MacBook Pro has been updated because of a new batteryreleased with this computer. With these computers, follow these steps tocalibrate your battery:
Plug in the power adapter and     fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the     power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar     indicates that the battery is fully charged.
Allow the battery to rest in the     fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer     during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
Disconnect the power adapter while     the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power.     You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low,     the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
At this point, save your     work.  Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low,     the computer will automatically go to sleep.
Turn off the computer or allow it     to sleep for five hours or more.
Connect the power adapter and     leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.
Tip:When the battery reaches "empty", the computer is forced into sleepmode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond "empty", tomaintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is trulyexhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safesleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD)computers, the computer's memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep stateusing the safe sleep image on the hard drive.

  • My Computer has been freezing all of a sudden in the last week and i have to keep doing force shut downs!!!

My dad usually helps me fix this stuff, well go figure he is on vacation and a day after he leaves, the computer starts giving me problems. im so angry with it right now i might throw it off my balcony...
The loading icon randomly starts spinning sometimes and wont stop, requiring me to do force shut downs in order to make the computer usable again.  sometimes it does it right away, sometimes it does it after ive been using the computer for a bit... for a while i can switch windows until it completely freezes.  i cant click anything, cant force quit any programs or anything, and i the spinning beachball never goes away!  the computer isn't hot either when it crashes! SO FRUSTRATING! it was perfectly fine until the last week or so. im anything but a computer genious, but i ran the disc utility and it says the drives are fine.  things ive done in the last week.  done the updates that the app store was pestering me with, updated corel painter 12 with the most current patches because that started randomly crashing. well now painter works and its the computer crashing X.x
I dont have extensions on my safari aside from adblock. and i only have 2 apps downloaded and corel painter is the only software on the mac side of the computer.  parallels has an adobe suite on it but Corel is the only thing that has gone through changes recently...
i dont know what to do... i need to work on projects and the computer keeps making me lose progress and keeps giving me frustration. please help if you can...
I've never used the forums before so i don't know the right category, but if its wrong im sorry.  if you can just move it into the right one...

Back up all data immediately, if you haven't already done it.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My mini has gotten very slow in the last week or so.

My mini has gotten really slow at everything in the last week. Most of what I do is done on the internet and I use Foxfire 4. Can anyone tell me how to run a system check that might help find the problem? Does anyone know of a problem with Foxfire 4 that might be causing this since I just down loaded it about a week ago.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
On Foxfire, try using Safari or Opera and see if you have the same issue. You can also check the Foxfire site under support to see if any OS X issues have been reported.
How much unused disk space do you have? General rule is keep 10%+ unused for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
Some have found periodically using OnyX can help with performance. Download from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php and run the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software you should have important data backed up.
If you want, you can run the Apple hardware test to ensure you don't have a hardware problem. It's on one of the gray OS X disks that came with your system. Look for the 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert and reboot holding the D key down, or hold the alt/option key and choose the Apple hardware test when prompted. Choose the extended test.

  • Why has the browser slowed to a crawl in the last week or so?

I have been using firefox for about 5 yrs now and haven't had to many problems til lately. It started not loading pages and then loading on 2nd try and takes forever to get there in the last week or so. Is there a reason that the browser has slowed so much? I have a laptop with windows 7, very powerful os system, shouldnt be a problem like this, never has been.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

I got a new rogers box and I had a Norton Security installed and since then the games like farmville and cityville have been crashing on a regular basis. I have called about the Norton 3 times, and i tried the Internet wireless and wired and nothing has changed so I don't know what else they can do. Is there something wrong with the flash player over the last week????

It seems to be a common complaint. Norton Security does not play nicely with Firefox (or IE).

    Hi RMH1405,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what kind of streaming you are talking about or what you are seeing when you try to do so in Safari. If the sites in question are Flash-based, you may need to make sure that Flash Player is up to date in Safari, as noted in this article:

For the last week or three Firefox refreshes two or three times for each refresh. Sometimes it refreshes for no obvious reason. For instance, I'll be in the middle of typing into a forum's post block & it refreshes. Or filling out an online form. Or simply viewing a page.

my PowerBook G4 has crashed 4 times in the last week. I got a message that there is a problem with the Mac OS Kernal. Does anyone know what this means?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Icloud outlook add-in not working in the last week

in the last week my icloud add-in to outlook 2010 stopped working. It simply wasn't working and I tried logging out of my control panel and back in. The outlook add-in now says that my username is wrong but it isn't. I seem to be able to log-in to the icloud control panel ok but the outlook add-in doesn't seem to be working. I think it might be linked to the introduction of IOS 7 and the update for icloud control pabnel to 3.0. Anyone have any ideas or fixes?

I just had a user call in with this exact same problem.  The steps that I took to resolve the issue are as follows:
    1.  Ran a repair on office installation and rebooted computer. (Not sure if this was nesary).
    2.  In Outlook go to File-Options-Add-Ins.  Below for Manage COM Add-ins click the Go button.
    3.  find iCloud add-in and check it off to enable it.  Click on OK until your back at outlook.
    4.  Close and relaunch outlook.  Go back to File-Options-Add-Ins and down at the Manage change the dropdown to "Disabled Items".
    5.  Choose the iCloud.dll checkbox and click on enable.
    6.  Close outlook and reopen.  You should now see the ribbon for iCloud sync.
