In the market for a 15in i5 MacBook Pro but whats up with all th problems?

I'm reading the board and it's making me not want to buy with all these issues on here.

It's worth noting that these Forums are mostly inhabited by people experiencing some sort of issue and are not at all representative of the wider community, many of whom are probably delighted with their purchase and not having any issues at all - i.e. this view is distorted.
That's not to say some hardware and software problems don't happen from time to time but usually Apple move quickly to fix/replace dodgy hardware and release firmware and software updates as needed.
All Apple hardware comes with a 1 year warranty so if you purchase and there's anything wrong you don't have to be concerned about it being fixed or replaced free of charge. You can also extend your AppleCare for an extra two years if you feel this is worth it.

  • I want to get a macbook pro but Im afraid of all these problems

I need to get a new laptop for 3D(Maya) work and some Design.. I want to get a macbook pro but I am very very worried of all these problems Ive been reading about. Whine? Too Hot? sigh....

Well here's a simple solution if you don't feel like sending in your MBP 2, 3, and 4, maybe even 5 times to AppleCare for recurring issues: Wait until the next revision of the MBPs which will hopefully bring about the introduction of the Core 2 Duo (Merom) chips. It shouldn't be too far off in the future and if the new chip is as good as everyone's saying it is, the wait will be well worth it. The CPU whine of my MBP is HORRIBLE and to me it makes the machine utterly useless when I'm working in the lab as I need to concentrate; I'm back on my PowerBook.
I realize that my situation is unique in that I'm working in a sound-sensitive environment. However, I paid the similar price tag on my PowerBook and this machine has been flawless. I bought the AppleCare for it and have yet to send it in for anything. My MBP is maybe 4 months old and has been to Apple's repair depot 4 times. In fact, for the first 2 and a half months of ownership, Apple had my MBP more than I did.
Apple may have fixed the problems by now with their newer MBPs but that's anyone guess, and it's solely a gamble as to what week build MBP you'd get and what kind of problems it will have.
My advice: I strongly recommend waiting if you can. Even if you don't work in a sound-sensitive environment, you will get great peace of mind knowing that your computer will perform, look, and sound like a well-built, $2000+ machine (hopefully).

Want to send all dictation to Word.

Care to share which OS you are using?
OS has its own dictation program.
Should I purchase Dragon Premium or Dragon for Mac?
Only you can make that determination.  Read the system requirements for both and read the reviews.

That is determined by what type of disk that it is. It may be a disk that only allows you to install Windows on your Dell computer and would not allow Windows to be installed on a Boot Camp partitition or as a virtual machine in an app such as VirtualBox on your Mac. If that is the case, you would need to purchase a retail Windows install disk.

  • If i buy a macbook pro but is preinstalled with lion do i have to pay a further amount for mountain lion?

if i buy a macbook pro but is preinstalled with lion do i have to pay a further amount for mountain lion?

Yes, when mountain lion first came out there was a peroid where if you had bought a Mac computer  in the last few months then you could get it for free. But becuase it's been out for a year i think now, thats not the case

  • I created a iMovie with photos, music and titles; shared it with the media browser and burned it on a DVD RDL. The disc will play on my MacBook Pro, but it will not play on my Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player or a smaller portable DVD player. Why?

I created an iMovie with photos, music and titles; shared it with the media browser and burned it on a DV+RDL. The disc will play on my MacBook Pro, but it will not play on my Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player or a smaller portable DVD player. Why?

Probably because they don't accept that media.
Try using Verbatim DVD+DL (if your project exceeds 2 hours) or Verbatim DVD-R if it doesn't.

  • I changed my passwords on the sites I frequent on my macbook pro but was told I would have to change passwords on my iPad and iPhone as well. Is this true.

I changed my passwords on the sites I frequent  on my macbook pro. Since doing that I have been informed that I would have to do the same thing with my ipad and iphone too. Is this true? Not sure I understand why. Do I just change it to the same password on each?

Any password for an internet site is managed by this site's system. Your device only provides an access to this site.
So if you change password from any device, you'll have to provide your new password for this site, whatever device you use for connection.

  • What are the specifications for Internal Hardisk 500GB Macbook Pro (Mid-2012)?

I need to purchase a new internal hard disk for my Macbook, I'm gonna go for 500GB space.
Now. I need to know the specifications. I don't want suggestions, because I live in India and I may not be able to purchase the harddisk which you tell me to.

Will any of the above two harddisk work with my 13 inch Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) model?

Drive #2 would be your best bet - except for the fact that it's a 3.5 inch drive and you need a 2.5" x 9.5mm drive.
Look on your site for HGST 7k1000 drives - 1TB and it will 'fit' your machine exceptionally well.

  • When you buy a macbook pro does it come with all the software you need

when i purchase a macbook pro with retina display. will it come with all the software i need

    Hi logan_logan,
Probably all depends on your past experience, but I'm getting a new Macbook Air next week, and I will be purchasing Microsoft Office. I have been using Word and Excel for years, and know all of the tricks, bells, and whistles, so just really don't want to go through a major learning curve to figure out how to use a new word processing and spreadsheet processing system.
I've had a little experience with Pages on my iPad (which I know is not even a close comparison to what is on the Mac), but I'm just more comfortable with Word.
So, I'd say depends on whether you want something that you are comfortable with, or something that is a new adventure! What's your pleasure?

  • WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR YEAR 6 STUDENT, MACBOOK PRO 13.3" i5 WITH RETINA VS i7?

My son is a year 6 boy. He needs a macbook for his study (of cause he wants it for leisure). He choose from his school purchase program:
    Macbook Pro 13.3" - intel Dual-core 2.9Ghz Core i7/8 GB DDR3 RAM/750GB HDD/SDXC/Intel HD Graphics 4000/Super Drive/Bluetooth 4.0/802.11n wireless/Facetime HD camera/Aluminium (HKD$14013)
    vs
    Macbook Pro13.3" with retina display - Intel Dual-core 2.6GHz Core i5/8GB DDR3 RAM/256GB SSD Intel HD Graphics 4000/Bluetooth/Airport/Facetime HD camera/Alumium (HKD$15288)
Both with same Protection and Adobe CS6 Design package for teaching.
    Looking for your opinion
    Thanks

    6 year old boy?
    Don't you mean a 16 year old?
A 6 year old can barely lift a MacBook Pro and certainly can't use complicated CS6.
I wouldn't trust a 16 year old with a $2000-$3000 computer + $2000 in software unless they did some thing to earn it, a 6 year old will likely take it outside in the yard and smear mud all over it.
Most parents who get they kids a computer usually get a iMac as it's stationary and not prone to being lost, tossed or stolen.
Show me where this 6 year old is with a $2000 laptop and I'll show you a army of thugs waiting to take it from him.

  • Just cracked the box open to a fresh macbook pro. What useless things can I delete to maximize disc space right off the bat?

While I have time, I just want to get rid of that useless stuff!
So lay it on me! What can go?

I agree, many of the freebies you get when starting up a new Mac may prove useful down the road. And your 128GB SSD may prove insufficent soon enough, no matter how much "useless" stuff gets dumped anyway.
Better start saving for a bigger SSD. You'll probably find that for the same $200 you paid for your piddly 128G you can find non-Apple-branded units of twice the capacity or more.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep with lid closed problem sorted!

I have experienced and read about many other people having the problem of not being able to put the macbook to sleep propery, and opening your bag to find it is boiling hot and still awake... i have tried all of the solutions posted on this forum such as resetting the PRAM, emptying the cache and so on and nothing has worked until now.
So for any of you out there experiencing this problem, i reccomend you this website which gave me the solution to my problem anyway, and i feel is well worth a try for you too as it is a harmless operation and is easily reviersible if it does not work.
    http://www.windley.com/archives/2007/10/fixing_macbook_pro_sleep_problems.shtml
i really hope this works for you as it did for me, and am posting this because of the anguish the problem has caused me over the last few weeks not being able to find a solution...  Good luck with solving

this worked for a month but now it is back to its old state. When i close the lid the keys dim and the screen shuts off, and the sleep light inluminates a steady glow however the laptop is still awake. I have noticed it will sleep if it is unplugged from the power, however if i have the charger plugged in it will stay awake. Can anyone please help me out?

  • I am in the market for a laptop, but I don't know whether to buy a Macbook Pro or a windows laptop

I am going to buy a laptop in the next month and I don't know whether to buy a Macbook pro with retina display 13 inch or a windows laptop. I like the simplicity of apple but windows can run more games like minecraft or league of legends.

    Hi Bueaucoop17,
The computer I would probably recomend for you is a Macbook Pro. I love windows for gaming, but they are not as simplistic and easy to work on as Mac's. I recently bought a standard 13-inch MacbookPro six months ago and I game on it a lot. I run Minecraft and League of Ledgends all the time as well as Team Fortress 2, Garys Mod, etc. and always get arround 60 fps. If you have 2 more years of high school and all of colege ahead of you I would recomend a Mac over Windows any day for work.
Cost can be a factor, though. A base model 13-inch Macbook Pro starts at around $1,000, while a basic 15-inch Windows laptop starts arround $500.
    Hope this helps ,

  • In the market for a MBA 13" and cant decide between 128gb vs 256gb. Help please?

I am in the market for a MBA 13" and cant decide between the 128gb vs 256gb. I will be finishing up grad school within the year and plan on purchasing an iMac to use as the main computer. I would be using the MBA for internet access, some word docs, viewing pdf files, etc. Nothing really heavy, no video/sound editing, or photography type funtions. I would however like to mess with the garage band program but am new to apple and dont have any experience with it. Itunes library is currently about 600 songs and very few pics. I was originally planning on the macbook pro 13" until I talked to a sales person at the apple store who introduced me to the idea of a MBA. I really like the price point of the 128gb vs 256gb but just want to make sure that I am being realistic with size. Help please?

I've worked part time for an Apple reseller for a very long time and sold a lot of low end computers to people who thought they were going to use the computer for just email and surfing, maybe writing the Christmas letter. It didn't take me long to realize that a lot of those customers were coming back within a year or 18 months to upgrade their computer or replace it with a more powerful one.
Based on this experience, I try very hard not to let someone walk out of the store with the low end MBA if that's the only computer in the household. It can't be upgraded. Since the 2011 MBA shipped I've seen another trend developing - it has happened in my own household, with a lot of the people I work with, and customers too. Despite having another computer, even one that in terms of specs is more powerful than the MBA, a lot of people have turned their MBA into their main computer. With that in mind, the 128GB drive really is the bare minimum and it will be costly to upgrade - not to mention voiding the warranty.
