In the middle of start up my display flashes black white lines

I have a Mac Pro Quad dual core 2.66 processor, 14 gigs memory,1 tera,500 gig,360 gig hard drives
OS X 10.6.8 update software download,then I installed it.
Then the computer stalled so I rebooted it...during the start up process it stopped and
the monitor has flashing black and white lines.I can't open the cd,or have control of the mouse or keyboard.
What can I do to fix this problem...?

what ever upgrade the software downloaded is the problem
You didn't mention this in your first post. Any idea what it was? Backups?
Besides that, this may be a fault in the video card, driver, or a screen fault.
Courtesy of BDAqua (if possible):
Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see double lines it's a Video card/VRAM problem, if the lines do not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

  • Displays diagonal, jagged, white lines on a gray background

The eMac (1.25GHz, 512 MB RAM) does the following. It boots (grey rotating spokes), then displays jagged, diagonal, white lines on a gray background. However, when I boot it into target disk mode, there's no problem w/ the display, and I could booted my Powerbook 12" G4 up using the eMac drive as the boot drive, so it doesn't seem to be a drive issue. Whaddya think, reinstall?
    It's running 10.4.11 OBTW.
    Cheers,
    Rex

Weird; I don't think I've seen anything matching that description yet. No display problems when booting into Firewire Target Disk mode suggests the CRT/analog assembly is mostly fine, but the expected corrupted video drivers would have been corrected with the OS reinstall. If the problem were with part of the ATI video display chipset, it would be a first to me that the native 640x480 resolution is OK but other settings are not. Still, it might be worth trying two things. One, check the PRAM battery; if you have a multimeter, it should read within 0.1v of 3.6v while under load (still in the battery holder). Battery location and replacement details are at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.
Two, try resetting NVRAM. Holding downcommand-option-p-r keys at startup until you hear three sets of chimes, then releasing the keys will reset PRAM settings (per What's stored in PRAM?). Resetting PRAM is supposed to do everything that clearing NVRAM does, but there's a long-standing body of ancedotal evidence that NVRAM is better thought of as a superset of PRAM (although this may not be nerly as true for OS X as it was in OS 9 and earlier). You can fo even firther and reset the Open Firmware settings as well. To reset the Open Firmware settings:
restart holding down the command-option-o-f keys; at the "Welcome to Open Firmware" message (black text on a white screen) type in the following at the command prompt and press return after each (case sensitive, no spaces):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
The Mac should restart after reset-all (if it doesn't, type mac-boot and press Return)
    Good luck!

  • Since the new MSN started I can display the email list but can to nothing with it, cannot open, delete or anything else with the individual emials

Since the new MSN started several days ago I have not been able to do anything with my emails in Hotmail while in Firefox. I have had to return to Safari. What do I do?

Yeah, there seems to be many of us with a common problem. I guess Apple will issue a work around or patch at sometime.
However, the Airmail app I mentioned before is worth a look - has worked fine since I purchased it. I admit it doesn't solve the problem of accessing any emails you need that are stored in the Mail application....
You might be able to get to copies of them on the relevant server of your email account provider via whatever browser you use (web mail).
My friend who has a much newr MacBook Pro isn't having any Mail issues....so maybe Apple are unwittingly pushing us with older systems to upgrade...I'm not really a cynic

  • So i have a 2011 MacBook Pro and when i turned it on this morning a flashing folder came on with a question mark in the middle of it and it keeps flashing. So i tried googling any solutions and up so far nothing has worked. Please Help ?

I tried googling several solutions, but so far nothing seems to work. Everytime i start up my laptop i press CMND+R to make it go to the repair disk utility but instead it takes me as if i have to install lion when i had Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When i do go to the repair disk utility, on the eft hand side shows two hardrives one is Untitled and another is Hitachi, i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer. When i insterted it onto the disc drive it came out under SUPER DRIVE and everytime i double click on the CD it says something about attaching images/ I also forgot to mention that the MAC OSX 10.6.8 Update shows on the left hand side on the bottom in DMG format. I dont know what else to do, please help?

This is the firmware telling you it can't find a bootable OS X volume.
Usually to solve this all you do is hold the option key down on the built in keyboard while booting the computer, this enters Startup Manager and then you choose OS X to boot, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk you change it to the boot volume and it tells the firmware.

What you have is a 10.7 or 10.8 Recovery HD from when 10.7 or 10. was on the machine previously.
The Macintosh HD partition only was erased and 10.6 installed on it, without erasing the entire drive like what should have occured to remove the Recovery HD partition.
So you have a mucked up machine.
i tried downloading snow leopard 10.6.8 onto a Re-writable disc  using my windows computer.
Well there goes your problem there, your downloading illegal copies of Snow Leopard from a untrusted location.
10.6 is not available for download, except from pirate sites. You likely have malware or a compromised system.
I dont know what else to do, please help?
What you need to do is call Apple via phone, tell them the make of your machine and order the appropriate 10.6 disks, they are inexpensive now. Some machines that came with 10.6.3+ origianlly need machine specific disks, other wise pre-10.6.3 Intel Macs can use the 10.6.3 white retail disks.
Once you have the disks, you need to backup your personal information off the computer to a external storage drive using the emergency quick copy method, then disconnect it to prevent mistakes.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Next follow this proceedure and make sure to select the ENTIRE drive on the far left with the drive makers name and size, this will erase the entire drive, then install 10.6 from the disk
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
When finished setup the machine and log onto the Internet and use Software Update to get current on 10.6.8
Don't use pirated software, it's likely been compromised in some fashion.

  • Can't stop Thunderbolt display from flickering white lines after firmware update (Yosemite)

I am having serious issues after the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2. Running Yosemite on MacBook Pro and I am now getting white lines that gradiate from the bottom to the top of my screen across multiple browsers, apps and even the finder window anytime I move my mouse. I cannot take a screenshot (it stops when I try) but I posted a video here:
    http://youtu.be/3zOKL1JFp5M
It is impossible to work this way and after 20 minutes of watching my screen constantly refresh anytime I move my mouse I am feeling nauseous.
Is there anyway to UNINSTALL this firmware update? I was not having this kind of problem before. Every once in awhile I was finding my Thunderbolt display would not wake up after sleep and I thought the firmware update would fix that, not cause more, crazier problems. It is causing this gradiating line problem on my Thunderbolt display AND my MacBook Pro screen, which is even more bizarre.

I updated and no issues with my 2012 Mini so may be computer related.  I believe once a firmware has been "burned" into the chip it cannot be redone.

  • Display shows unknown "white line" via MBP retina

as title, when i turn off the "automatic GPU switching" for using the NVIDIA graphic power, and i try to switch the resolation from "best scale for retina" to "1920*1200" and quickly switch back and repeat for a few times, and the screen will shown a "white line" under the finder bar, then i turn back on the "automatic GPU switching" this "white line" will be gone. i belive its the GPU NVIDIA driver's error, please check forward for this problem, and also i will get support from the Apple store to find out the problem.

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • I just took my new MacBook Pro out of the box and the screen will not work. Display is, black no life to the screen at all

So I just ordered my first Mac book Pro. I took it out of the box and hit the power button to do the start up and the screen will not work at all. I shut the computer off and back on again. I plugged it in and unplugged it. I've done everything I can think of and the screen still stays blank with no life at all

Is the battery charged? Press the little button on the left edge, near the front. If no green dots, no charge.
Does it charge? When you connect the MagSafe charger, does the pilot light on the plug light up?
Does it actually start? Should sound a chime after you press the power button on the top/right corner. If it chimes, does the Caps Lock pilot light when you press it?
If it starts and Caps Lock does flash on and off, have you tried pressing the screen brightness control for awhile? F2 turns up the brightness, may be turned fully down.

  • My iPhone 4s refuses to use certain chargers that work on other iPhone 4s's such as the Mophie Juice Pack Air and when starting up the screen is from time to time covered in white lines that fade with time, what is wrong?

Read the question. This has been on going since I recieved my phone but has gotten worserecently.

With iOS 7.1, Apple has incorporated a means of sensing the cable and charger as to their meeting the Apple specs.  That does not mean they prevent use of third-party components, but those components must be fully compliant with Apple's specs.  There have been a lot of users asking why they get the device not supported message...rarely is due to anything other than a cable or charger not fully compliant with the specs.
Be sure you are using cables and chargers that comply, and if you get the message, it means there is a problem with the component.

  • Display issue - horizontal white lines and vertical multicoloured lines.... UNRELATED: constant "update available" icon?

Hi, my Curve 9300 on the OS 6.0 system has vertical and horizontal lines accross the display, with more appearing every day...   started and the top and left areas of the screen and seem to be slowly migrating & multiplying.
I tried first turning the phone off and back on again.  Then the battery pull reset.  Now I've tried downloading the OS update direct from the blackberry site and reloading it....   all to no avail.
Everything is functional, but lines accross the screen are constant.  Since my phone is past warranty anyway, I would like to open it and check the screen connection, but I do not have a torx driver that small to fit the little screw in the back....  Is there anything else I can try, or an easy enough way to remove that screw without having to buy a stupid screwdriver that I will likely never use again...?
One other thing I've been meaning to find out about...   Despite attempting to update multiple times through the Blackberry Desktop Software, and even now after downloading the update direct from the Blackberry site, my phone continues to display the "update available" icon (with the star in a red circle on a BB outline), and indicates an update required for BB OS 6, yet the desktop software says "no updates available" and I couldn't find anything more recent on the Blackberry site unless there is a way to put OS 7 on the older blackberries.  Why might this be happening and have I missed something?
    Thank you!

In terms of heat I'm not sure.
It isn't only one spot that you can push to get it to come back. I have to manipulate the screen carefully in a number of different combinations. Also if the screen brightness is down the and screen fully open with an external monitor on the screen can sometimes clear up even after 4 hours plus of use. If I then move the screen up it will take a few minutes to go bad again. Even if the brightness is left down.
I actually have a spare screen from an old 400mhz model which is identical brand. Its just not in as good condition and has to bright spots in the corners and one dull area middle bottom. Its just not in as good nic as the current one when its working. Is there a way to 'tighten' the LCD in case its a pressure problem or is still a heat issue?
    Many Thanks, Tre.

  • Why is my 24-inch LED display flashing black (and sometimes scrambles) every few seconds?

I have recently upgraded to a new iMac: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7. 4 GB 1333 MHz DDr3. AMD Radeon HD 6970M. 1024 MB. Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. I have it attached to a 24-inch Cinema Display.
Before I switched to my new iMac, it would blink black a couple of times a day. This was going on for a LONG time, but was not a big deal. However, now that I have switched to the new iMac, it is every few seconds. And it has now added the "scrambled" screen to it's repertoire. Fun. And, as I am typing this...it just went black and has not come back on.
I've read a few threads on this happening, but haven't found any substantial evidence as to what is causing this. It's beyond annoying. Has anyone learned anything new?

Okay. Murphy's Law. As soon as I posted this, I found an answer (hopefully!). My situation fit the criteria at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4045?viewlocale=en_US and I installed the update and so far, so good. I'll keep you posted.

    Help!

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
