In Tiger server print queues stopped

we are having the problem when we updated the server to Tiger that the print queues do not hold the jobs now and can't figure out why is this. Any leads?
TIA

Hi Zavion,
à
I am just curious why I see different behavior between the servers even tho they are the exact same image and the print queue setup is the same as well.
Would you please let me confirm whether use the same account to do those operations when see that different behavior?
Meanwhile, please temporarily
disable firewall and antivirus program and then check if you still see the two different result.
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Justin Gu

  • Print Queue stops jobs - help?

*One day I could print pdfs and the next I couldn't!*
I'm using Acrobat 7.0 Professional and everytime I try to print a pdf, from any programme, the Print Queue begins to print my file, it says opening Distiller and then the Print Queue stops, just like that! No reasons.
I have reinstalled Acrobat having first uninstalled it from the disc, this hasn't solved my problem.
I have repaired permissions, no solution here.
I have run Printer Setup Repair by Fixamac and that's not helped.
I have reset the printing system in Printer setup utility - still no help.
I have reinstalled the OS system from the original discs and still I cannot get the printer queue to print the job!
I have a Canon Pro 9000 printer and I can print perfectly well to that.
    PLEASE can someone help me???
I've wasted half a day on this and have got nowhere.

The log shows that the first process to have trouble is the backend (transport) process "pdf700", which is the PDF distiller installed by Adobe Acrobat 7. I believe the rest of the errors are related to this process failing.
You mentioned that you deleted Acrobat, however I believe that this file may not have been deleted, or overwritten with the new installation. So I would run the the Acrobat Uninstaller and then check if this file gets left behind. If it does, then you can try manually removing this file.
You can see that the file is located in /usr/libexec/cups/backend. You can use the Finder to navigate to the folder. With a Finder window open, select Go > Go to Folder and then type that path above. This will open the backend folder where you will see the pdf700 file. Now, before you can delete it, you will need to change ownership from system to your account. Do a Get Info on the file (Cmd I) and in the new window, expand 'Ownership and Permissions'. You will see you have read-only rights. If you expand Details, then you will see that System is the owner. Next to this is a lock. If you click this you will be prompted for the administrators account/password. After entering this, you can change the owner to your account and then close the Get Info window. Now you will be able to delete the pdf700 file.
With the file removed, you can install Acrobat 7.x again. Of course, if the uninstaller does remove this file, then everything I mentioned above won't be required and of no help. I then recommend you check the Acrobat forums on Adobe's web site to see if there is any fixes mentioned there...

  • Print Queue "Stopped" after restarting...

I'm having problems with a Print Queue that keeps reverting to "stopped". I'll restart it using either Printer set-up utility or Server Admin but when a job goes through it just stops again.
The printer is set up to print using IPP and is set to enforce quotas (not that that should stop the print queue anyway).
Please HELP as i've got 80 students wanting to print!

I've had problems with the print queues in 10.4.x not taking print jobs after the server is restarted. Do a port scan on the server to see if port 515 is open. If it isn't then try restarting the print service on the server. Port scan the server again and see if port 515 is open. If it is open now try printing. I also had problems with ipp printing so have reverted all my clients to LPR. Some client machines I have switched to direct ip printing to the printer. The print queues in 10.4.x haven't been very reliable. I hope this helps.

  • Server Print Queue Clogging

Hi, I am running Leopard Server in a small office with mixed Windows XP, Vista and Mac 10.6 clients. I am not an IT administrator, but I own the company and have been teaching myself on a DIY basis. These forums are a very helpful source of information for me.
We have a DELL MFP 1600n printer connected to the server via USB. Users can print to the printer. However, very frequently, the print queue will get clogged or jammed and the network printer will go into a paused state. It usually happens when a user tries to print a PDF or .jpg file. I resolve the problem by going manually into the print queue through System Preferences on the server and deleting the PDF or jpg, clicking resume, and then the remaining docs in the queue usually print as normal.
I don't see why I am getting so many frequent clogs/jams in the first place -- the Dell specs show it has 32MB of RAM so shouldn't it be able to handle a moderately large PDF?
Is there a special method for configuring printer services on Leopard Server that will help resolve this problem? Do I need a different printer?
Also, can I assign a user limited privileges that would enable him/her to go in and clear the jammed print queue without giving full access to everything else on the server? Currently, only I can do it and it is a hassle because it needs to be done at least once per day.

Magnify your issue by 145 and that is what I've been dealing with. I'm running a print server with 145 printers and 1800 users, and until recently, I've had to periodically clear the queues and un-pause the printers. Huge PITA.
I still don't know what is causing certain jobs to pause the printers, but here's how I am managing the symptoms to this problem.
Create a launchdaemon to run periodically (mine runs every 120 seconds)
Have it run a script with the following two lines:
    cancel -a `lpstat -t | grep disabled | awk '{print $2}'`
    cupsenable `lpstat -t | grep disabled | awk '{print $2}'`
The first line cancels all jobs in paused printers.
The second line re-enables any paused printers.
It won't stop certain jobs from hanging the printer, but it will "un-stick" them and eliminate the huge backlog of jobs that pile up as a result of it being paused all day.
FYI...we are running mostly Xerox Phaser 8550 and 8560 printers.
    Hope this helps.

  • 10.4.6 (PPC) + iPhoto 6.0.4 + Epson CX4600 Print Queue stops

Trying to print to an Epson CX4600 all-in-one printer/scanner device from iPhoto 6.0.4 on an iMac G5 running OS X 10.4.6 causes the print queue to stop.
The CUPS error_log (with LogLevel = debug) says:
    D [29/Jun/2006:04:32:06 -0400] [Job 2] fatal::internal error -30891
    E [29/Jun/2006:04:32:06 -0400] PID 354 stopped with status 85!
I've tried deleting /Library/Printers/EPSON and /Library/Receipts/EpsonPrinterDrivers.pkg prior to reinstalling the Epson drivers from Tiger's install disks.
The printing system's been reset to delete all queues and printers.
The Epson's been added back using Printer Setup Utility -> Add -> Printer Browser -> More Printers... -> EPSON USB -> Add. (there's no option given to choose a Page Setup option in that dialog box, it's all greyed out)
Checked that the page setup, media size and type are all as they should be, and tried a different USB port (directly connecting - no hub)
Prints OK from TextEdit, but iPhoto's a no-no.
Anyone got a clue what the CUPS error message is trying to tell me? There's a full transcript of a failed printing attempt error log at http://web.org.uk/cupsfailed.txt if anyone's interested.
Two days spent trying to nail this one with no success.
    Powerbook G4 1.5GHz 15in   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Turns out the solution was to use Printer Setup Repair from Fix-a-Mac.
Used it to backup the printing system, then pushed all its buttons and rebooted. Result, printer auto-detected and set up correctly and the iPhoto printing problem is apparently resolved.

  • Basic tiger server printing to network printer issues - HELP :)

Hi everyone, Im after some help as im running out of ideas, here is my basic setup: (sorry i have rambled on a bit
current 192.168.0.x network that has ADSL, PC's HP Laserjet 5Si network printer.
Connected to that is my Tiger server with 2 lan ports, one is connected to that network and the other connected to a switch where I run all my macs - the server is a basic file and software update server.
macs connected to the server get a 192.168.2.x address and can access the internet and each other etc - all is happy.
now - I had my personal macbook pro connected directly to the first network to access the printer, works fine and fairly quickly but was unable to access the server (i imagine because the server thinks i was from the big bad internet from the .0.x range
once i connected to the other network served by the mac server i could access all the files fine but printing would not work, so i thought I would have the server access the printer as it has access to both networks and just share it to the local macs.
well when i add it and put in the 192.168.0.71 address it connects and loads the GIMP HP5si driver, but when it tried to print it takes up to 5 mins to show that its finished, but only sometimes does the printer actually fire up, and the times it did it never printed the whole page...
The only thing i can think of is that the server is trying to print to the .0.x address'ed printer but using the .2.x address range, possibly confusing the systems.., im not too familiar with all the firewall/NAT settings ,i think i have everything turned off, but its still not working..
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, im not sure what else to do.
    Thank you for your time

This sounds more like a protocol or a driver issue rather than an addressing issue. Which protocol is being used to connect to the printer? You mention the GIMP driver gets loaded, which I read that it's an automatic function rather than you having to manually browse to the driver.
Also, I would look at trying the Gutenprint drivers from Sourceforge rather than the included GIMP-Print.
The other thing would be to check the cups error log on the server. It could give some clues as to why the spool file is taking so long.

  • Print queue stops automatically

when trying to print a document (from whichever program I've tried), the document appears to be sent to my printer (Lexmark Optra R plus), but then the print queue automatically stops. After I start the the print queue again, the printer works for some seconds, and then the print queue will stop again. It doesn't seem to be a problem related to the printer itself, as it is printing without problems when I send the document from another computer.
Any help is highly appreciated !

  • How to share 10.6 OSX Server print queue with Windows 7 successfully?

I used Bonjour Print Services for a Windows 7 machine (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl999) to successfully connect to a Mac OX Server 10.6 print queue, and the following message is generated in the print log and CUPS log,
    "POST/printers/stormoncecar/ HTTP/ 1.1" 200 2205 Print-Job Successful-OK
There are no errors, however, nothing comes out of the printer.  It works for all the Mac OS Client machines, but not for any of the Windows 7 machines.

Driver for Canon LBP6750 UFRII prints from Mac and prints from Windows 7.  However, printing from Windows 7 as you share the printer from your Mac does not print out anything and has no errors.

  • Client stops print queue

I have approx 150 Panther and Tiger clients, both using Ethernet and 802.11G, print-served by a G5 Tiger Server. Often, a client user unintentionally somehow manages to stop the print queue, stopping print-services to that particular printer altogether. In order to find the offending client, I need to go around to each client to look for a printer icon in the Dock with a red exclamation point. Once found, I can restart the print queue from this client.
    My questions are:
    1) None of my users are advanced enough to purposefully stop the print queue. Is there a keyboard shortcut or print menu item that is easy to push by mistake - in other words, how can it be that my users repeatedly manage to accidentally stop my print queue? And how can set up my client to prevent accidental stops?
    2) Is there a way I can restart the print queue from the server? Finding the offending client again and again can get a little tedious, and requires me to be present and available to do so, as none of my users are trained to restart the print queue from client.
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

Ah! This is what I had running:
    #!/bin/bash
    # This program deletes files older than 1 hour in /var/spool/cups
    # and older than 5 minutes in /var/spool/cups/tmp .
    # It also repairs permissions on SAMBA spool (for Windows printer sharing)
    /usr/bin/find /private/var/spool/cups/ -type f -mmin +60 -delete
    /usr/bin/find /private/var/spool/cups/tmp/ -type f -mmin +5 -delete
    chmod 777 /var/spool/samba
    Combine it with..
    #!/bin/bash
    /System/Library/StartupItems/PrintingServices/PrintingServices stop
    rm -R /private/var/spool/cups/*
    mkdir /private/var/spool/cups/tmp
    /System/Library/StartupItems/PrintingServices/PrintingServices start
    /usr/bin/enable `lpstat -p | grep 'disabled' | awk '{ print $2 }'`
And it might take care of itself.

  • Integration Server Queues Stopping

    Hi People,
We are doing a FCC scenario (.CSV to XML), with the content conversion parameters as follows:
    Recordset Name: Recordset
    Recordset Structure: DataTable1,1
    Recordsets per message: 1
As it is clear from the configuration, <b>when the source file will contain multiple line items, XI will create multiple XML files, each containing data for a single line item.</b> My problem is, <b>whenever the source file contains a large number of line items, I see them being picked up (In SXMB_MONI), but the Integration Server inbound queues stop and they show a green flag in MONI with tooltip "Message Scheduled On the Outbound Side". I have to go to SMQ2 and manually activate the queues to release the blocked messages.</b> How to alleviate this problem..because it is really irksome to go and everytime manually activate the queues. Is there any report that can be scheduled so that it caueses the queues to activate automatically when they are blocked?
P.S: We can not change the design. Also, I have seen

    Awaiting your expert views,
    Thanks in anticipation,

    Hi Shabarish,
I followed your instructions, but they did not work out for me...the problem still persists!

  • Print Queue Auto Stop

Just though I'd share this with others.
Unlike Tiger, the printer queues would not quit automatically on Leopard after a job is finished. The solution was simple.
If no queue is running, go to System Preferences > Print & Fax. Click on ANY installed printer then click on the 'Open Print Queue' button.
Now navigate to the Dock, control-click (or Right Click) on the running Printer Queue. In the pop up menu is "Auto Quit" (right above "Keep In Dock"), click on it so it is check marked. Now ANY Printer Queue will quit when the job(s) are finished. Making just one Printer Queue "Auto Quit" sets it for all installed printers!
Seems I've been fortunate and have had no problems with my 5 printers transitioning to Leopard, so I hope this tip is helpful to others.
    Cheers

Thanks for this info. Just what I need. Not intuitive at all. Jim

  • Kerberised printing to AD print queues from OD Clients

    Hello,
I am trying to print to AD print queues from OS X 10.5.4 and my users keep getting requests for authentication. I heard that the printing to AD print queues was now kerberised and working in OS X leopard. The users are from the AD and log in fine with managed preferences from the Open Directory.
What do i need to do to get this working properly?
It is the only thing that is stopping me integrating OS X into my Active Directory.

    Thanks for letting me know.
I did find the mentioned link. I also found a link on the apple-scripts forum as well which utilizes the same implementation but in a package form for a more user-friendly deployment.
It can be found here if you are interested:
Again this does not work in leopard.
To get around this in the end i decided to use Papercut NG as all i needed to do was manage the print queues via quotas. This does the job nicely as it is cross-platform and keeps the quota system in one place. Great as i can now print to the os x server print queue from os x and print to the AD queues from Windows all with their own authentication systems.

  • Print jobs stopping for no reason

    Hi,
For some reason print jobs simply stop when sent to server print queues. The client queue shows "Connecting to 192.168.1.201 at port 631..." when the job is sent, then it halts & the job sits in the queue.
I've tried recreating the queues by deleting the printers from the server system prefs, adding them in again (as both LPD and IPP) by specifying their IP addresses. Does it matter what I spec for the queue name? Is it better to use the default or something that matches
There's some suspicious stuff in the print service log (see below), such as "shared == 0" for each of the queues & the final "master LPR sharing state = 0" after rebooting the server. If these are the culprits, how do I change the sharing state?

  • USB printer on Airport Express via Bonjour: print queue no longer works

This is a variation of similar postings on this forum, but hopefully provides more information to allow others to pinpoint the problem.
Have been using Intel iMac 10.4.8 now upgraded to 10.4.10. Two printers attached: 1 via USB and a 2nd via USB/Bonjour on Airport Express. Both working flawlessly. 2 days ago, an ADSL Internet outage occurred. When this was reestablished an hour or so later, everything was back to normal, EXCEPT that the USB/Bonjour/Airport printer no longer works. When jobs are sent to it, the printer queue stops and a red "!" appears in the dock on the queue. Restarting the queue just brings back the red "!" again.
Have done all the usual things:
    1. Checked cables, restarted iMac, restarted printer, reset Airport.
    2. Have confirmed the printer works find if moved to a direct USB port. So the problem is not the printer.
    3. Have upgraded the Airport firmware to 6.3. Works just fine as a network access point. So the problem is not the Airport itself.
    4. Have deleted, added the printer, renamed the printer - none of these things helped (this was suggested by some postings on the forum)
    5. Have tried every combination of which item is powered up first (this was suggested by some postings on this forum)
Have confirmed (by checking CUPS Error Log, as well as by Internet Connection Diagnostics) that the problem is that the iMac can no longer connect to the printer when printing on the local host if it is connected via USB/Bonjour/Airport. However, it can find the printer for adding a printer during setup. So Bonjour is working, but the printing is not.
There are lots of similar postings of people having problems with printers previously working, but then stopping working on an Airport Expresss/Extreme. I hope the above scenario, which is a very simple network topology, and the fact that the iMac and printer and Airport all work correctly on their own, is of help. It does look as if the problem is in the Airport Extreme, and was triggered by the WAN outage, and not fixed by printer reinstallation or firmware upgrade.
Looking forward to someone with a clever suggestion...

What did you use to discover the printers on both Mac and PC. Did you use Bonjour for both?
