Inability to boot from alternative boot devices

Hi… I apologize if this has been covered, but my searching hasn't found anything definitive.
A friend asked me to replace the hard drive in his Macbook, one month out of warranty. The techs at Apple (I understand he went to a Genius Bar) told him that the hard drive is the problem on the machine.
The computer is a Macbook late 2008, and it's not booting. In an attempt to salvage some of the HD's data, I tried booting from an external, but no dice. The problem is, now I'm thinking it might be more than just the hard drive… when my hard drive crapped out on me, I was able to boot from my external, from a boot DVD, etc.
When I first got it, it would start up, go to a white/grey screen, and that's it.
Then I zapped the PRAM, and I started getting chimes, but that's it.
I held down option to get boot options, and was able to see my external hard drive, but never my boot DVD (this is not an OS X DVD, it's an 'emergency disc' with various software). It was also able to see my Macbook's HD, which I connected in Target Disk Mode. However, it was never able to open either drive. The cursor would show up on the screen, followed by the orange little FW HD icon, already selected (the Macbook has one FW port, so I was unable to connect them both at the same time), but that's it. Clicking, hitting enter, etc, did nothing. No discernible reaction.
Just for kicks, I reset the SMC. When I restarted the computer, I now got a flashing folder… which actually bodes well, as that's usually just a HD issue, not logic board (as far as I know). But when I rebooted again to try to boot from another external, etc, I got the white/grey screen again, and that's it.
So, my question is this:
Is there anything else I can try? Either to fix this or to eliminate HD vs. other components.
Is this just a hard drive issue?
If this is something else (e.g. logic board), what would it cost to replace?
One thing I found on Google mentioned that removing the hard drive, if totally dead, could possible fix this. Can this be? I mean, I'm telling the computer to bypass the hard drive entirely!
Thanks in advance… I'm hoping I remembered everything I tried.

Hi hudgie,
There's any number of situations that occur when a HD fails, having worked at one of those "Genius Bars" for a while I can honestly say that there's no across the board, failure indication. Some of the more common indicates were:
1.) Startup to a flashing folder with question mark
2.) Loud clicking/grinding noise
3.) No noise/responsiveness from drive
4.) System bus lockup / inability to launch startup manager / inability to boot from external source
It sounds like you're dealing with situation #4. When my HD failed in my MacBook Pro it did the same thing, the drive would lock up the startup sequence and prevent me from doing anything. When I removed the HD and attempted to boot from an external source it would then startup just fine.
I personally don't think you're dealing with a logic board issue, but the only way to confirm that would be to connect another HD to the drive connection and try to boot the machine. If the issue persists I'd even go so far as to replace the SATA connection cable and then point a finger at the logic board.
Apple offers a "flat rate" repair service for machines out of warranty but with no accidental damage, I believe the price runs about ~$350. If you're just replacing a HD or the SATA cable and drive it's much cheaper to do it yourself. If you determine that the logic board is the point of failure, then I'd go the route of having Apple do it for you. Especially because the repair service grants you a 90-day limited warranty on the machine.

  • G5 xserve: How do I boot from a FireWire device ?

    Hi.
I have a PowerPC G5 server WITHOUT a keyboard/display and have just installed Leopard 10.5.1.
After setting up Leopard, I made a backup copy of the server HD onto a Lacie FireWire hard-drive device connected to the FireWire 400 port on the front-panel using Carbon Copy Cloner v3.
The backup appeared to work fine.
However, when I tried to boot from the FireWire device by holding down the system identified button at the same time as the on/standby button and then selecting Light 4 (to quote page 65 of the G5 User Guide… “bypass the current startup disk and start up from any other available startup disk”) nothing happened. Instead, the fans just got louder and louder and louder and louder, with the occasional flash of FireWire device and HD lights. I switched it off after 10 minutes and re-booted as normal from the HD device.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    john

    Tony,
Having thought about this and read Apple's article "how to use FireWire target disk mode" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583), let me play back what I think have to do...
    Assumptions...
    a) A working Leopard system.
    b) I want to go back to yesterday's backup.
    c) I can't use Time Machine as it's an "Advanced" install.
    d) My backup is done via Carbon Copy Clone onto my external FireWire device.
Is this what I would do... ?
    1) Get my PowerBook G4 laptop, which is also running Leopard !
    2) Switch off the Xserve G5.
    3) Connect the FireWire backup to THE LAPTOP !
    4) Connect the laptop to the Xserve using a FireWire cable.
    5) Switch on the G5 and hold down the system identifier button.
    6) When the lights rotate select Light 5 "Begin target disk mode".
    7) On the laptop an icon would appear which is the Xserve HD.
    8) Using the laptop, I then copy from the FireWire backup to the Xserve HD icon.
(I guess, as the fans may be running flat out at this point !)
    9) After the backup then eject the Xserve HD icon.
    10) Disconnect FireWire cable.
    11) Re-boot Xserve
    12) Should be running yesterday's backup.
    13) Relax !
    Blimey !

  • Flex 2 Windows 8.1 re-install from USB boot device ignored

Sorry to jum into your thread, but i've been trying to re-install Windows 8.1 on my Flex 2 but cannot succeed in booting from USB drive with the Windows 8.1 installation.
Same Thumb drive work on other laptop, but on this one, the Flex just ignore it and continue to load Windows 8.1 from it's internal HDD.
I tried to shutdown the Flex and turn it on using the NUVO button, i selected the USB as boot device and still got boot from internal HDD.
would appreciate any help from your side.

Right, just checked the GNU documentation and you should use this format to boot Windows on sda1:
    menuentry "Windows" {
    insmod chain
    insmod ntfs
    set root=(hd0,1)
    chainloader +1
    https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manua … ading.html
    However:
If you have installed DOS (or Windows) on a non-first hard disk, you have to use the disk swapping technique, because that OS cannot boot from any disks but the first one. The workaround used in GRUB is the command drivemap
Another problem arises if you installed more than one set of DOS/Windows onto one disk, because they could be confused if there are more than one primary partitions for DOS/Windows. Certainly you should avoid doing this, but there is a solution if you do want to do so. Use the partition hiding/unhiding technique.

    Hello.
When I try to boot from ISO CD via AMT I got an error message:
"Can't find boot device by boot options"
Settings are similar to what I made in HP 8100, 8200 etc - SOL/IDER/KVM, network access enabled
    Where could be a problem?
Prod. name: HP Compaq Elite 8300 Microtower PC
    Prod. number: B0F41EA

Just wanted to follow up with this as I got a response from HP. It looks like it is at least the 2.9 BIOS version that has this issue. I know that at least the 2.51 BIOS version is unaffected.

  • Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

    Hi,
I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".
I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.
The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks

    Hi
Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.
Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.
Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

  • Satellite 1800-804: How to boot from a USB device?

I have a satellite 1800-804 and i like to know how to boot the notebook from a usb device.

    Hi
If you want to boot from USB device you should press down U key on keyboard just after pressing power button but I dont know if this will work (as far as I know it works with external FDD device).
Try to boot up the unit with start disk (FDD) and load the MS-DOS driver for the external CD/DVD-ROM if you can find it on manufacturers download page.

  • IPMITOOL - change the booting device from disk to network

I am using ipmitool utility to change boot device on Sun T3 machine. Currently DISK is set as boot device for Sun T3 machine. I am running the following ipmitool utility commands to force boot from network. But everytime I power on/off the Sun T3 machine, it always boots from DISK.
The setup I am in is the following:
I use ipmitool and connect to ilom of sun t3 and perform/monitor the sun t3 host machine.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
The host machine is Sparc Sun T3. It is not x86 hardware.
Ideally I would like to use ipmitool to change the boot device. The commands I am running are the following:
    ipmitool -I lanplus -H xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -U root -P tom chassis bootdev pxe clear-cmos=yes
    ipmitool -I lanplus -H xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -U root -P tom chassis bootparam set bootflag force_pxe
Both commands run to successful but no effect on changing the boot device.
I tried with obp command and SP command like you mentioned below, both are not change the boot order. Not tired eeprom yet.
ideally i want to write a shell script which when run would connect to ilom of Sun T3 Sparc and run change the boot device.

  • Can Satellite L40-139 boot from a USB device?

    Hello,
I have a new L40-139. Looking through the BIOS I cannot find an option to boot from a USB device such as a USB HDD or USB flash drive. Could someone confirm if teh L40-139 can boot from USB, and is so how to configure the BIOS for this.
If it cannot does anybody know if there are plans for a BIOS update that would allow this?
I have to admit that while I like the L40, I am disappointed at how limited the BIOS is.
    Thanks,

    Hello
I am not 100% sure but, as far as I know, you can not use USB HDD as first bootable device. USB FDD yes, but with external HDD it will not work.

  • Malignant secondary boot device.  When I plug in an external hard drive which has time machine in one partition and a secondary boot device in another, the secondary boot takes over and wipes existing files.  How do I turn it off but keep the time machine

Please help new (senior) convert to Mac Pro (OS X).  Am following the 'switching to a Mac' portable genius 2nd ed, and as it advised, I bought an external hard drive (a Mac My Word) and partitioned it with one partition for a secondary boot device and another for time machine.  Book implied I needed both.  Seemed to download OK but now when i plug in the external hard-drive it wants to reboot me fresh all over again.  How do I keep the time machine partition going but have the secondary boot device only in case of emergencies?  Do I 'eject' that partition- and if so how do I do it from outside the hard drive (I am not game to reattach it currently)

  • Fresh install of Server 2012 R2 causes inaccessible boot device on first Reboot

    Hello Everyone,
Doing a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 on a SuperMicro X9DRT-HF+ motherboard based server. The server is using iSCSI boot, setup detects the iSCSI disk and copies its files, finishes the "Getting files ready for installation" "Installing
Updates" phase, reboots, takes a while and eventually gives a Blue screen with Inaccessible Boot Device error. I have tried some changing options in the BIOS, I've had Nimble (storage array) support on the phone and they confirmed the setup is correct
but for some reason after the first reboot Windows can no longer find its install files and gives a BSOD.
    Additional Information:
Server: SuperMicro X9DRT-HF+ (no internal disk)
Storage: iSCSI disk provided from Nimble CS220 Array
Windows 2008 R2 Server installation will proceed without any problems.
I checked the \Windows\Panther\Setupact.log / CBS.log file and there doesn't seem to be anything indicating a problem.
I have googled a number of times to find solutions but most articles reference a similar problem after installing a particular KB (which shouldn't be the case here). Need some help :)

    Hey Tim,
Thanks for your reply, since the start of this post I have also installed MDT to try a different approach to installing the OS. Using MDT I have injected the Intel I350 driver into the installation so it should be restarting with the driver loaded.
The odd thing is that when the server reboots the Windows startup screen loads for about 4 minutes before it gives the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error. This would indicate to me that it sees the disk and tries to boot from it but then something goes wrong.
Other than the \Windows\Panther location is there another place I should be looking for log files during this part of the Windows install? I have reviewed all the locations listed under the TechNet library article "hh824819" (I can't post
a link to the article but a google search brings it up) but I can't seem to find a log of when the server crashes what it is doing at that point.

  • DV7 - Error 03F0 - No Boot Device Detected - Passes both Memory and HDD Test

    Hi there,
My DV7 will not boot up at all.  When powered on, I see the HP loading screen briefly, then into "dos type" font saying "No Boot Device Detected - Error 03F0"
I have run both the memory test and hard drive test from the diagnostic menu and both come back ok.
    A little more history on the Device/Problem;
2 months ago it was shutting itself off due to overheating - After a good cleaning, the temps cooled down enough that it was no longer shutting off.
I am currently in India, plugging directly into outlets (230v power) using an adapter.  10 days ago there was a small spark at the outlet leaving a very small spot on one of the prongs of the adapter.  There was no power flicker, and it wasn't a surge, just almost like a bad connection sparking.  This "spark" seemed to have killed my charger immediately.  I used the battery until nearly dead, purchased a new charger, but when I returned and tried the new charger, it would not charge, nor power on.  When plugged in, at this point, the power/charging light on the side was lit, but not on the front.  I used a pin to open the CD drive, and the front light lit up, but it still would not power on.
I took it to a repair shop here in India, and they managed to get it so it would power on (not sure how), but that has only brought me to where I'm at right now with the Error.  They said "It worked, and then we tested again and it didn't work and now it no work".
My current BIOS edition is F.46.
Essentially I'm wondering if I'm screwed - and if I'm not, then what can I do to trouble shoot/fix it?
P.S.  Finding parts in India that are specific to my computer will be near impossible with the technology differences.  Also, dealing with local techs is extremely difficult so I'll need to know
P.S.S.  I just tried to power it on again to double check the accuracy of my post and it will not power on, nor can I get the CD drive open again....

Is the unit still in warranty?
Based on the description of the behavior, it does sound a hardware issue beyond the hard drive.
Was the AC adapter that was purchased an HP adapter? I know you said it is difficult to get the right parts in your area, but I want to confirm if it is an HP adapter or aftermarket.
