Inability to import

I have 3 Canon EOS cameras:
1DS, 1DS Mark II, and Digital Rebel XT
When I import images directly from the each camera, everything is fine.
When I import images from the Rebel or the Mark II, where I have added metadata using Photo Mechanic or Downloader Pro, Aperture does not recognize the file format. "Unsupported Image Format" is displayed when these imported images are selected. With the 1DS, Aperture has no problem with these 2nd Generation files.
Since I have used either Downloader Pro, or Photo Mechanic to embed metadata in my images for the past couple of years this means that most of my images are unaccessable with Aperture.
Is anyone else in this situation?
I hope this is an oversight on Apple's part, and is relatively easy to correct.

Jack,
No, Aperture is unaware of the metadata, even though I can view it in any of the RAW data software I have.
By design, Aperture seems to treat RAW files as if it is the first software ever to see them.
Therefore, by design, Aperture cannot be used in a workflow that uses:
1. A more efficient tool for metadata insertion. (Like PhotoMechanic or Downloader Pro, etc.).
2. DxO Optics to reduce chromatic aberation and distortion (unless you convert to TIFF and leave the RAW file out of the Aperture library)
3. A better RAW converter (unless you leave the RAW file out the Aperture library)
4. An existing library of RAW images which have embedded metadata (unless you want to reannotate 10's of thousands of images).
None the less, for sorting through and evaluating a shoot of several hundred images, I haven't used anything that touches it.
Hopefully Apple will address these issues sooner than later so that I can do more than fool around with Aperture.

No, it is not possible to import Excel files with either the xlsx or the the xlsm file extension.  This is simply a limitation of the Import/Export Wizard.  Sorry.  Hope this helps.

I am interested that you have been able to use 'pass-through' to import your analogue video. Did you have to have a tape in your camera, or were you able to do it with no tape?

  • GarageBand, Inability to import MP3 from iTunes

I recorded a lecture with an Edirol Audio Recorder (EAR) and would like to edit it to chop off five minutes of inane chatter at the beginning.
I have a .MP3 file that I've imported into iTunes. I can find it in the Media Browser, and if I drag it to the Timeline I get an in-process message that says "Importing File" and then goes away - but nothing changes. If I do the exact same thing with one of the Garageband demo songs, it pops up as an audio file in the Timeline.
Am I doing something wrong, or is GarageBand being strange?
The lecture is 74 minutes long but the timeline is only 30 minutes long - could this be causing the problem? And if it is, how do I fix it?

Turn the ".MP3" suffix into ".mp3" - that should do the trick!

  • Inability to import pictures form Iphoto

    Hi
I recently purchased AP2. I have been trying to import pictures from my iphoto library. I go through the motions and AP2 tells me '(0) imports with errors'.
I have repaired permissions and I still get the same problem and I cannot export any images out of Iphoto?

    thanks for your help.
    it did work.
i even did one little test.
i dragged my image into the timeline and then moved that image to somewhere else (i even trashed it)
that image is still visable in the iMovie project's timeline.
i checked any IMovie related folders but don't see any copies of that images.
Sound rare but that's what i got.
    Thanks.

  • Inability to import to iPhoto another iTunes 6.0.2 Bug???

After downloading an update to iTunes last week I've been unable to view my iTunes library in iPhoto or iMovie HD, or to download purchased songs into either iPhoto or iMovie HD. I wish I'd read all your postings before downloading the update. Every time I try to download a song to iPhoto I receive an error message saying; "This computer is not authorized to play song number." The strange thing is the songs still play in 6.0.2. but they don't migrate to the other apps. I still have iTunes V 5.0 on my lap top and it's working just fine with the other apps. I'm wondering if there is some way for me to uninstall V6 and return to V5.
    Any ideas will be welcome.

    Colin:
I did install QT 7.0.4 and initially after opening iPhoto to add background music I did not see the iTunes library. However, I noticed the the drop down music pane was very small. I clicked on the margin adjustment and lo and behold the library was there. I'm now certain it was probably there all the time and I just didn't notice. I think the pane shrunk when I downloaded the iTunes update. I'm sorry for adding to the consternation of all the other iTunes users.

  • Can't import to external FW HD from camcorder with iMovieHD

    Hi all,
Ever since I upgraded from iLife04 to iLife05, I've had problems importing movies from my camcorder into my PB.
After doing numerous "do this trick" fixes, I finally got it to work reliably... as long as I do not have any other FW connected to the PB!!!
my internal HD is full (don't have free 13G space on my internal HD where I can dump 60min .dv file), so I cannot just keep importing into internal HD without shuffling several Gb worth of files back and forth between the PB and the external. Camcorder is connected to the FW400 port, and the external LaCie drive is connected to teh FW800 port (HD has its own power source, so the FW800 port is not driving current to the external HD. just data connection).
with the FW800 HD connected, iMovie HD croaks upon trying to import movie--usually after about 1second of import, it loses the image even if the camcorder keeps playing. and all the control button stops working. usually requires "kill -9" command from the terminal and a reboot to get iMovieHD working again. Sometimes after about 10min after I hit the iMovie "stop" button, it might finally stop and show "camera not connected". basically, iMovie malfunctions badly.
now, with the exact same setup (FW800 external HD, FW400 camcorder) worked just fine using iLife04/iMovie4. So for now, I've been working around by booting up in a differnet partition with iLife04, import movie, then reboot into the main partition, and edit using iMovieHD. very painful.
any insight on this? is one of my FW ports fried? I've tried different cables, etc.. no luck. I have also checked to make sure the firmware on LaCie is the most recent.
all this happens with various flavors of Tiger OS. haven't tried installing iLife05 on my Panther partition (may be I should try).

    Hi,
I'm a UNIX sys admin in other systems (SunOS, HPUX, etc) so UNIX is rather second nature to me. Been using UNIX since '85, Macs since '90 (forced to use Windoze in '97, and hating every moment of it). When MacOS merged with UNIX, I was mighty happy
as for the OS build, I do an archive-and-install prior to OS updates (I usually accumulate two updates before I do archive-install), to wipe out any accumulated garbage that may taint the OS (you dont' want to be doing this with other UNIX OS, but MacOS makes it easy). This is easy for me to do also, since I don't really install any system enhancement apps much so reconfiguring it back to what it was before doesn't take all that much time. Latest update that went through this archive-and-install is to 10.4.5. Haven't installed the latest security updates (there seems to be some weirdness with it, so..).
in any event, this iMovieHD inability to import movies has prevailed from 10.3.9 through 10.4.5... although I've had the most success in getting it mostly working at 10.4.4 level (never could get the import working at all at around 10.4.3)...
Startup partition has approximately 8Gb free (it's a 15Gb startup partition). I looked at the VM allocation prior to partitioning, and it said 5G VM use, so I made sure there will be at least that much available free space after OS install.
I will never use a computer where I don't keep OS and user files in a separate partition, also insist on a secondary OS partition in case the primary fails (so I can still startup the darn thing. this secondary OS partition is very small, since it's only meant to be used for emergency use, and only has applications relevent to recovering data, repair etc). Had enough drive crashes and other problems hwere having separate partition was the only thing that saved me from losing the entire content of the hard drive (and yes.. all the files are periodically updated to my external). Also, makes it easy to do housecleaning (defrag, etc).. since sysOS partition and applications don't get defragmented all that much, only thing I'll have to "keep clean" usually is the user partition.
80Gb internal is plenty large to have good partitioning scheme.
    anyway.. I digress...
if it is a matter of having enough swap space on the startup partition to run iApps, then i shouldn't be able to import to any hard drive, internal or external. if the iApps likes to dump temp files in the working directory, then internal (if I can do it) will be working with 13Gb free space while the external has 150Gb free space. again, not the problem..
so the issue is something with the FW use... I guess it's unclear whether this is an OS problemFW hardware problem, iMovieHD problem, or (gasp!) quicktime problem.

  • Import error moving from iPad to iPhoto

Somewhat puzzled by the inability to import photos from my iPad to iPhoto.
    Here's what happened:
    1. Used camera connector to transfer high-def JPG format files from a Nikon D50 onto the iPad (no problem, and the *iPad displays the pictures* perfectly).
    2. Attach iPad to Mac and start iPhoto.
    3. iPad is shown as attached and import window is displayed, correctly showing 176 photos to be imported but *no images are displayed*, only the dotted outline boxes.
    4. Attempt 'Import All...' and an *import error is shown listing all 176 JPG files* as not imported.
    5. Start Image Capture utility and attempt 'Import All', same error is reported.
    6. Attempt selecting just one photo and importing just selected item (fails in both iPhoto and Image Capture with the same import error).
It looks like the iPad can read the JPG files but for some reason the Mac cannot.
    Setup details:
    iPhoto '08 v7.1.5
Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.2
    iPad running iOS v3.2
    Image Capture v6.0.1
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Mark

Updated to OS X 10.6.4 and everything seems to work correctly.

  • Importing Outlook calendar into iCal

I am relatively new to Apple and one of the few things that is taking the gloss off an otherwise happy experience of working in this new environment is my inability to import my Outlook (2003) Calendar from the work office into iCal on my home iMac. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me if this is possible, and how it might be done so that I do not overwrite the appointments I already have entered in iCal. Thanks.

Don't blame Apple for this. Blame Microsoft. ALL of Microsoft's products (Outlook, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Office, etc.) were created in proprietary & closed formats, designed to keep you "locked in" to Microsoft and Windows as long as possible. Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to move any of your data out of their products and into a competitor's products.
Apple, on the other hand, has designed all of their products with open standards and open formats, so your data is never "locked in" like it is with Microsoft.
In the meantime, luckily you can use the product Outlook2Mac to get your data over from Outlook's calendar to iCal.

  • Import video to layers

I open video from video frames to layers, it open easly but I hold the shift while select where I want.. problem is here.. while it's happening, too slow.. What should I do sorry for my bad eng

    Mylenium,
I appreciate your response, but I don't think it's relevant to my setup.
    1) I do not have the 64 bit version of XP pro.
    2) As stated in my post, this worked fine in previous versions, under the same OS, on the same system.
    3) .mpg files (and in fact all quicktime files) work fine in my browser (screenshot attached)
As I said, I do appreciate your response, but it hasn't helped me. I do hope there's a resolution because otherwise, taken along with PS11's inability to import .gifs while preserving the individual frame timings, photoshop is becoming less and less useful for large aspects of my work. That's a regrettable trend, particularly given that this is all stuff that worked fine for me before, and particularly given the price of the software.
    All the best,
    Mark

  • Help - HDV tape import problem - Sony HC-3 broken - Questions/Warning

My Sony HC-3 HD camcorder has just failed. I've had it just over 3 years.
I really don't enjoy video editing much, and despite maybe shooting 20-30 tapes of HD footage of my young children, I'd only got round to importing a handful over Firewire, but was lulled into a false sense of security perhaps by treating the tapes as my film negatives (new tape each time).
The camcorder behaved a bit erratically a few weeks ago when inserting a tape, then the other day it gave an error, I ejected the tape and had a constant C32:11 error flashing. Lots of user reports on the web, no idea what the real issue is, but any suggested fixes didn't work.
Essentially I cannot close the tape transport compartment with or without a tape - it won't accept a tape and return to record/play position.
Almost feels as though something isn't clicking/catching when you push the tape in.
Anyhow, I thought if worst comes to worst I'll just buy Sony's latest model - then the realisation they'd discontinued consumer HDV tape camcorders. Not a happy bunny.
I've sent camcorder to local Sony repair center and am awaiting outcome.
    Now my questions are:
1 - Is there any way of simply reading the tape data using an SD camcorder if I ever needed to ? - There are programs that use them to archive data so I guess in theory it must be possible just to read the data, unless it's stored in an SD compliant file format rather than just data.
2 - is 1080i HDV (1440x1080 res) as captured by the Sony HC3 a cross-vendor format or Sony specific - (if 1 is impossible) could I if needed say pick up a Canon HDV camcorder and use that to import my video?
3 - are we to assume now that DV/HDV is dead as a consumer format despite it's better image quality compared to hard drive/memory card video codecs.
Hopefully Sony will repair my camcorder for a fixed rate charge - if they can't or won't what are my options for importing the video I've got on tape?
There are bound to be companies who'll do this for a fee if worst comes to worst, but I feel a bit annoyed with Sony for dropping support for the format after buying an expensive camcorder only a few years ago.
Even if it can be repaired, I'm not sure I'll want to continue using it if there's a risk of future failure and inability to import old tapes. Frankly I'm glad I've used the video function on my Canon 5D II a lot in the last year or so for quick video clips even if many are transiently OOF.
Yes, my fault for not importing the tapes immediately after shooting, but I'd assumed that I would be able to import the data well into the future evene if it meant a new device.
    AC

    Jeremy Hansen wrote:
HDV is not dead!!! Heavens, the pros laugh at AVCHD and hard drive based cameras. When you shoot on HDV tape, you have a backup.
Sony do still manufacture HDV pro camcorders of course - it's the early adopter consumer they've left in the lurch.
One of my original reasons for using tape was this automatic backup - silly of me not to routinely import tapes to Mac of course.
    To answer your questions:
    1. No, you can't read it with an SD camera. you are correct that it is just 12GB of data, but no software really knows how to go back and forth, so to speak. In case you care, there was an app years ago (I forget which) that could use a Dv camera as a 12GB backup drive. But practically, no.
Shame really seeing as it's just data - I'd used the Firewire SDK kit DVHSCap app to pull off 12-13GB m2ts files in the past which I felt would be ok for computer archival, unedited direct playback on PS3 and fairly quick to convert to AIC as needed for future editing purposes using a utility.
I did wonder if DVHSCap might be able to pull the data from an SD camcorder, but maybe the tape just would not play.
    2. HDV is HDV. If you had problems, pros would advise you to import with the same camera, or at least same brand. But, usually there are no problems. There shouldn't be, but occasionally there are.
I was hoping this was the case, great.
    3. Image quality is NOT better with hard drive based camcorders. In fact, most use a higher rate of compression than HDV. What is the advantage? A tape-based camera takes an hour to import and hour. Hard drive cams go faster. Some look great, but there is no advantage over HDV.
Yes, the only advantage of HD/card based camcorders is simpler import faster than real time, and I'd always been concerned with HD camcorders you'd have too many eggs in one basket if the HD failed in between imports to computer.
I own an HC-3, and you have to realize it was an early camera in the high-def market. I don't use it often (except as a secondary) because of its optics.
I've always found it produced pretty acceptable results - constantly amazed that 3-4 year old products get regarded as obsolete by manufacturers who just want you to buy the latest gadget.
    Here is my advice:
Get a Canon HDV camera. Use it to import your tapes, and enjoy its superior optics and color quality. Opinion? Yes, but I believe it.
I may consider that if repair fails - any model recommendations that would trounce the Sony?
    Cheers
    AC

  • Feature Request: Ability to import multiple audio tracks

Hello, I'm having a problem with Premiere Pro CC 2014.2. Unfortunately it lacks an important feature that I require if I'm to transition from Sony Vegas Pro. I much prefer Premiere, but I'm stuck using Vegas due to Premiere's inability to import all the audio tracks in my video files. I've seen a few other people around the internet complaining of the same problem and they also feel that it's rather silly for such a major editing software to lack this feature.
Here is an example video file. If you open it in Premiere Pro you'll not be able to hear my microphone, although it's there in Windows Media Player and Sony Vegas.

    Audio track 2:
    Size is 0 bytes
    Rate is 48000 samples/sec
