Inability to Restore iPod after numerous attempts!

Hi i really need some help!
Heres the problem: out of the blue my iPod stopped working. I plugged it into my computer using origional USB lead and socket. I was told that i needed to Restore it, so i did. It went through the whole 'Apple logo on iPod with loading bar at the bottom' type thing, then when this is over, the 'Do Not Disconnect' sign appears.
(This is the bit i havnt seen any infomation on yet). After the Do not Disconnect sign is on the iPod screen, and while iTunes it still up and running, i get a Windows box named 'Autoplay' with picture of a flashlight search for folders, (much like when you search for something in the start bar). This comes to an end, and im told to Restore iPod again. I do, and nothing happens.
Also, it may be important that when i try and open MyComputer while iPod is plugged in, i cant, and i have to 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' and End Task, to get it shut down.
I have tried all the following things:
1: The 5R's (Restart, retry, reboot, reload, restore)
2: Unloading, Reloading iTunes
3: rebooting entire computer
4: right clicking on MyComputer and going to Manage and all that sorta thing (device manager).
5: putting iPod in disk mode etc
6: Changing the drive letter
7: removing ALL USB's and only leaving in iPod
HELP Me!
Dell Dimension 4700   Windows XP

This is exactly what is happening with my 20g. I posted the question last night and got a response to try this:
"If you can see your iPod in Device Manager, right click on it and then format it (FAT32), then do a restore in iTunes."
Which I just tried. I keep getting the Autoplay flashlight, too. At least I can see my iPod in the Device Manager, but when I right-click, my only choices are Open or Eject, so I can't reformat.
Would love some other suggestions.

Tell us more about the disk and partition onto which you are trying to install Mountain Lion:
Open Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities). The left column should show your disk with its partition(s) indented below it:
How is the disk (top level container) formatted according to Disk Utility:
    * What Partiton Map Scheme? (Should be "GUID Partition Table".)
    * How many partitions? (Should be 1 unless you have a Boot Camp partition.)
How is the partition (lower level container) formatted according to Disk Utility? (Should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".)

  • My iPod will NOT restore, even after 100  attempts!

So here's how it goes: I have attempted to restore my iPod literally 100 times (I have counted), and each time, only the Apple logo shows up. The actual iPod screen itself does NOT light up, and no matter how long I leave my iPod plugged into my USB ports (I have tried all three) on my laptop, nothing happens. Meanwhile, if I unplug my iPod from my laptop and then plug it back in, iTunes will recognize that my iPod is in need of restoration, and then it begins all over again! PLEASE HELP!!

Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .

any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! very furstrated over here...

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • Restore iPod after hard drive format

I just formatted my computer and imported my iTunes library back. However, whenever I connect my iPod Touch 4G to it, iTunes says that it will erase the iPod. I tried restoring it to factory then restoring from iCloud, but it still wants to erase my stuff and replace it with the "authorized" copies on my computer. How do I avoid this? And if I do have to erase everything, will my settings on iCloud be intact so I can just sync them to the new apps?

To the best of my knowledge, iCloud stores the app data but not the apps themselves.
If your library has been wiped out, you're not totally out of luck but it will be a nuisance.  Apps, TV shows and movies can be downloaded multiple times without being charged.  In the past, music could not be downloaded again without charge but that may have changed.

  • After numerous attempts to install Snow Leopard....

...._(by numerous I mean more than 6 attempts made)_ I have finally thrown in the towel and will be using Leopard (10.5.8)....forever, I suppose.
My last attempt(s) (this morning) was to use Pacifist to re-install iCal in Snow Leopard and then using the original install disc to try the "Install Optional Installs". Zero, zip, nada on everything tried.
I need iCal but Snow Leopard will not allow it. It launches, bounces up and down in the dock a couple of times and then quits.
Here's the latest info from my final attempted launch of iCal in Snow Leopard:

Your machine with no non-Apple devices should be able to install iCal and Snow Leopard no trouble.
The logfile is often difficult to determine what went wrong. But my belief in such matters is simplify first, and then add on later. Backup your data at least twice, and see if there is an issue just erase installing Snow Leopard from a retail installer disc. If there is, then you know there is a hardware problem if no non-Apple devices are connected. Running the hardware test that came with your Mac:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081 would allow you to determine this without any installation of data whatsoever, as long as the issue isn't due to some random RAM issue that it can't detect.

  • How Do I Restore iPod after Hard Drive Failure?

I have an iMac G4 desktop that is 3 years old. 1 week ago I had a serious hard drive and had to replace the hard drive.
I have an iPod and when I tried to move music from the iPod into the new drive, the iMusic program said that the program only supported the previously registered iPod.
I think my iPod can't recognize the new hard drive (or vice versa.
How do I restore music from the iPod to the new hard drive? I have read iPod support article 300173 about moving music to a new computer. It doesn't help me because I can't do the first step of connecting to the old computer (hard drive) since its dead.
Also the iPod is a 30 GB unit and I have 9.81 GB of space left.

    Try Senuti.
It's a program that transfers music from iPod to iTunes on a Mac.

  • Restoring iPod after two years of setting on the shelf

I plugged in my iPod to my computer. All of my music was listed on the screen and everything seemed to work fine as long as I was attached to the computer. After several hours the fully charged icon displayed. When the iPod is disconnected from the computer, nothing works. Help!!

Lithium ion batteries need monthly exercise, after that long of a layoff you need to replace the battery.

  • Can't d/l Elements 11 after numerous attempts

I've read the instructions and tried numerous times to d/l Elements 11 to reinstall on my new computer after the old one totally died.  I do everything on the list carefully, but then end up with a 1.2mb download that says it's an "adobe installer" file that Windows 8 has no idea what to do with.  Can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong?  Failing that, I guess I'll have to have my son mail me the install discs from 500 miles away.

if you follow all 7 steps you can directly download a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-11-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a problem downloading, you didn't follow all 7 steps, or your browser does not accept cookies.
the most common problem is caused by failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).
failure to obtain that cookie results in an error page being displayed after clicking a link on prodesigntools.com

  • Restoring Ipod after update

Help!!!! I updated my Ipod yesturday and then tried to restore it, while it was in the middle of the restoration it froze and now it is in recovery mode and everytime i connect it to Itunes to restore it, it freezes in the same spot and then disconects itself. I have already tried to uninstal itunes and then reinstal it but that didn't help. Can anyone please help me!!!!

    Welcome to the discussions,
did you disable any kind of anti virus software or firewalls before you started to restore? The ipod needs to contact Apple during the update.

  • Restoring Ipod After Updating to version 7.02

I'm kind of in a bind. Yesterday, I updated my iTunes to version 7.02. I was able to restore my iPod, but it suddenly crashed. When I went to restore it today, I got a message that read that my iPod is corrupted. (I have never gotten this message before.) I then got a second message that said "There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod 'iPod'. The requested resource was not found."
I poured through the various threads that deal with this issue, but no one seems to have found a solution that works. I re-installed the new iTunes, I unblocked any security pop-up, etc. and nothing seems to work. I keep getting the same messages - that my iPod is corrupted and that there was a problem downloading the iPod software.
On an unrelatd note, I have windows XP and now, when I try to restore my iPod, I get an "Autoplay" pop-up box that seems to be searching for a file. Huh?
Anyway, what's going on? Has anyone found a solution to this problem? (One person said that s/he just waited for the battery to his/her iPod to run out and posted that the restore then miraculously happened... Seems suspect, though.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Dell   Windows XP

Wow, perfect timing. I had the exact same thing happen just now. It must be some problem with itunes 7 and 4th gen ipod. It says its corrupted, and I should restore. When I press restore, it says it cannot bc the resource is not found. Maybe if enough people chime in, a solution will be found. Question, do you have any antispyware, or other apps which were running?

  • I cannot get iTunes to complete a clean install of 10.5.3 on my laptop running Win7-64 after numerous attempts of install, repair, uninstall, repeat, etc.  Reply is "Could not complete...missing component...repair or reinstall...(-42404); suggestions?

iTunes update 10.5.3 for Win7 64 bit will not install completely and does not recognize iPhone 4s.  Error messages indicate components missing, and numerous efforts to repair, uninstall, reinstall have all failed. Error (-42404) is constant; any suggestions?

what if they are turned off?  I cannot install iTunes or QuickTime Pro 7 on my WIN7/64 Lenovo W520. ran all the repair cycles uninstalls, reinstalls about 10X each, no luck

  • NEED RECURRING KERNEL PANIC HELP!!!!! WON'T STOP AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS AT HELPING!!!

This kernel panic non-sense is driving me CRAZY.
started happening about 3 weeks ago and they've been repeatedly happening. It's always when i'm doing something hard drive heavy that it happens. It hasn't BEEN happening and I've had it since December 2011.
I edit vids with final cut pro x, i watch videos on youtube and these kernal panics happen. I've been to the genius bar in the apple store, i've reinstalled the OSX, I've deleted EVERYTHING off of my macbook in an attempt to start over. I've even opened it and cleaned the fan and dust from inside the system and these panics still happen. I don't have $250 to spend on an apple care warranty and frankly i shouldn't have to. $1300 is enough for a **** laptop. Is there anyone that can give me a good solid solution to this so i don't have to take this laptop to the store and throw it at someone?

Honestly if you have had Kernel Panics since you bought your Mac I would of taken it back at the first sign. I've had my 15" MBP since Dec 2011 and Never had a KP.
Having said that you have a Hardware problem. Hard drive, Memory or just a faulty MBP. Since you wiped the drive, re-installed the OS and it would seem you have done everything as far as software to stop the KPs and they haven't gone away then there is only one thing left. Faulty product. Keep taking it back to Apple with pictures and log file files or print outs of them and demand that they fix it or replace it.
As for Applecare I bought it as I am new to Mac and from reading this and other forums it would seem Mac's have the same hardware and software problem that all other computers have, IE they are no better then any other make or model computer (they only cost a ton more) and Apple charges an arm and a leg to fix Mac's that are out of warranty.

  • Ipod classic will not restore and will not work after many attempts

I have purchased and replaced 3 ipod models, This is my third one (80GB ipod classic) and with out fail after 1 year and 2 months after buying it, it stopped syncing with my itunes and now after 5 attempts to restore it will not restore and will not work. I am sick of this and find it preposterous. What is wrong with ipods..? what is wrong with my recent one?

I have tried to restore via itunes and I still get the same message on the Ipod after many many restore attempts."Use iTunes to restore" with the picture of a plug on the screen and then it just shuts down. Exactly 1 year and 2 months after I purchased it as was the previous Ipod I had in 07.... what is going on?
Are ipods not made to work with both macs and pc's? it seems they just shut down after a while
    what can I do?

  • Good day! I have an iPod touch 4G and after many attempts I managed to updated it to ver. 6.1.5.

    Good day!
I have had an iPod touch  version 4.1.2 for almost 4 years and after many attempts I manage to upated it to version 6.1.5.
I then created an account with iCloud so that I could have my backups done directly to iCloud.
I then restore the iPod to the backup I had on my computer but although it copied the photos, notes, contacts tc. it didn't copy the music I had on it.
When I tried to sync my music from my iTunes on my PC I got a message stating that my iPod was previously sync to a DarklordPC, not a clue of who's PC this is and it's the first time this message came up. It gave me the option of erasing the sync of the DarklordPC and go ahead with a new sync, which I did, but it didn't sync at all.
I've retried to sync numerous times and it tries to sync but after a few seconds it just stops.
Can anyone help me please...I'm going crazy without my music

    You should have done this.
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard DriveSynced media like apps and music are not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes and they restore from backup will not restore synced media unless the media is in the iTunes library.
