Inaccurate Final Cut Express documentation: cannot open ANY file except QuickTime
Hi,
According to Final Cut Express 4 documentation, I should be able to import several kinds of video files in Final Cut Express, including AVI and MPEG files. In practice, only .mov files can be imported. When I tried to import .mp4 files from my Sony digital camera as well as from my Android phone, I got error messages about unrecognized file format. When I tried AVI files from Bandicam, I got the sound but only a white image. Yes, there are tools converting files to .mov format, but they stubbornly REENCODE everything, audio and video. I though the .mov was a container format so a simple tool could simply repackage the .avi, .mp4, etc., into .mov. No, in practice, reencode so loss of time and quality. Knowing that Final Cut Express perform its own encoding, called the rendering operation, this is starting to be quite messy as video editing process. Is it because my version of Mac OS X is too old and only newer versions provide an up-to-date QuickTime stack supporting other formats than .mov?
Partially solved. The AVI files I was trying to import contained Xvid-encoded video with PCM audio. Installing the Perian package added a QuickTime component for Xvid, which allows to not only play my AVIs but also import them into Final Cut Express.
Still no luck with MPEG4 files from my Android phone, but I was able to import MPEG4 from my Sony digital camera.

After Tiger 10.4.11 update Final Cut Express won't open
I just ran the software updated for tiger 10.4.11. Now my final cut express won't open and run. The error report says:
Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000008
Does this look like a file or folder permissions issue? Where can I get info on software update rollback? Thanks in advance, very frustrating.Thanks for the tip BGreg but no joy. I repaired disk permissions, installed combo update 10.4.11, repaired disk permissions but FCE still won't run. Same error report as before. Any suggestions appreciated:

I cannot open any files transferred from my Windows PC to my Mac as I am "not authorized". How can I correct this?
Select the folderr containing all of those files, CMD+I, click on the lock, enter your admin password, add yourself with read & write, and click on the action button and select apply to enclosed items. That should do the trick. BTW, I don't have a PC, so i've not transfered any such files to my machine.

My computer won't open Final Cut Express. I can click on it, and go through the beginning of the program opening, and then without an error message, the program just closes.
Any ideas?Same exact thing with me today on a Dual G5. FCE won't open. Stops after five seconds. No messages.
I believe it has to do with setting scratch disks and resulting incomplete pathways to scratch disks. But I don't know how to fix it. When I removed a designated scratch disc, FCE opened. But when I reset a scratch disk, a box opened asking to verify a pathway, but the box had nothing in it. I clicked on "continue" and FCE simply closed again. -
Final Cut Express won't open on my MBP
I have a new Macbook Pro 17 in. I loaded Final Cut Express HD which runs fine on my G4 tower and Powerbook G4.
When I try to open it I get a message saying:
Configuration error
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing.
AGP card.
What is going on?
Do I need to get a newer version of FCE HD?Well I know that the Apple Pro Training Series FCE book is really good. I don't have it. I own the Apple Pro Training Series for Final Cut Pro and it's amazing and have learned a lot from it.
Inside FCE DVD - those are always pretty good.
Apple Pro Training Series: FCE HD - same author as my Final Cut Pro book.
Googling is your friend. You can find a lot.
I know that Inside FCE is really good and the company that makes those DVds have good training DVDs.

Final Cut Express Won't Open - Help!
Hi, I had been using Final Cut Express successfully for the past six months... until ast week, when I (too hastily) deleted the contents of the Final Cut Express Documents folder to clear up space. Since then, FCE won't start. After I click on the application icon, the program seems to start up for few seconds, but then it crashes.
I have tried to reinstall FCE by deleting all of the files (following instructions I found online), but the same problem occurs.
Anyone have ideas? Any help would be great appreciated. I need FCE back!

Final Cut Express will not open!
I have Final Cut Express HD on a MacBook with OSX 10.4.11. It used to work fine but suddenly the application will begin to launch and then just close while still at the loading screen. I uninstalled and reinstalled hoping this would help and still it does the same thing. I don't know what else to do does anyone have any suggestions? Also, sometimes it gives me the error message: Unable to locate the following devices: Apple firewire NTSC (720x480). This never used to happen and I assume it is part of the problem.
Has it started happening AFTER you updated to OSX 10.4.11 (or installed some other program or update) ? What version of QuickTime are you using ?

Why final cut express wont read my avi file?

I am currently expreience some problem. Few days ago, i was shooting a video project with my D3s. My D3s shoots in AVI format. yet i dont know why the final cut express and the quick time only able to play and edit the avi file with sound? and wont be able to edit or play the video without the sound. [my d3s have an option which can let me recored the video without sound]Hi
There is a bit of confusing about this.
• .avi - is a container - not a codec and can contain old .avi with codecs as Indeo 5 - and this needs to be converted
to be used in any iMovie or FinalCut (as I understands it)
• I think Flip4Mac is the program to buy and use.
Howto find out what Codec - If Your .avi movie opens in QuickTime Player - then open Movie inspector and read it.

Macbook, Final Cut Express and Canon 5D video files
Hello everyone.
I intend to purchase my first Apple Mac soon. It will probably be the Aluminium Macbook with 4GB RAM.
I am an avid photographer and use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I can handle all the processing of the still photographs without a problem but I would like to take advantage of the cameras HD video capability. I know nothing about video editing but I have read that Final Cut is about the best video editor out there. My PC struggles to even play the movies from my camera, let alone edit them.
I have the following questions that I hope some of you can answer:
1. Will the standard Macbook with 4GB RAM be able to handle and edit the large video files (1.2GB for a 5 minute video clip)? I would prefer not to buy the Macbook Pro if possible. The computer will only be used for video editing occasionally. I will not be making 90 minute Hollywood style productions... just 5 minute short films once in a while.
2. Does the cheapest version of Final Cut (Final Cut Express) handle files from the Canon 5D2?
3. I know the video from the Canon 5D2 is generally disliked because it is 30fps and is in a strange format. However, I am not able to change this and I will not be buying a dedicated video camera as I rarely shoot video. So, I need to know if the Macbook and Final Cut Express can do the business with these files. Do you have any advice on how to handle the 5D2 files?

Yes. You have a lot of hard-drive space with the Macbook Aluminum, so that shouldn't be an issue but you might consider using an external hard-drive to store your media if you ever start making longer movies. To tell you the truth, the Macbook with 2GB of RAM would probably work just as well. I recently upgraded mine and it didn't make much of a difference. Either way though, the Macbook should work fine with Final Cut, mine does. You might consider getting the one with the 2.4GHz processor, I have the feeling that will make more of a difference when editing than the extra RAM.

Sort of, but it doesn't edit them natively. You can either drop the files in the timeline and render it out and it will work, or, if you don't want to render whenever you make a change, a better technique would be to first convert the clips using an application like the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to something FCE can edit natively such as Apple Intermediate Codec. It's not as simple as drag-and-drop, but it will work.

See above. I recommend the Streamclip conversion over the rendering though. If you have a lot of files to convert, Streamclip has a batch conversion setting so you can set what to convert to once and Streamclip will convert all the files. Converted files can then be edited in FCE without any particular problems.
You should convert using these settings:
Compression: +Apple Intermediate Codec for HD or DV-NTSC for SD+
*Frame Size:* +(A supported FCE frame size, for example 1920x1080, 1440x1080, 720x480, etc. The supported frame size you choose should be as close to your original frame size as possible)+
*Frame Rate:* 29.97
Sound: +Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz+
Keep in mind that the Macbook Aluminum lacks a Firewire port, so if that is detrimental to your use you should consider getting the white Macbook or the Macbook Pro. I believe the Canon 5D Mark II uses USB for transfer though, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem. -
Final Cut Express Isn't Importing SOME files
Hey guys
I've been using Final Cut Express to edit game footage I record on a Hauppauge HDPVR device. The device (and accompanying software) creates a .m2ts and then converts it to an mpeg4 file.
Now, I record all my footage this way, and 95% of the time I can import to Final Cut Express no problems. However, a few files won't, and I get the "1 file recognised, 1 unknown" error. All of the file types are the same, so its not a case of an incompatible file type.
Also, the file runs happily in Quicktime, but just won't import into FCE.
Any help would be great thanks!The media needs to be converted into a format that is supported natively in FCE not into MPEG-4. I don't know what you're using to convert, probably Handbrake but that's not the way to do it. You could try ClipWrap but I don't know if it works with that camera.

Finder Search-Function is troubled / corrupted / misfunctioning
When keying in a search word the files are selected properly, yet not shown with details. Furthermore you cannot click and open any file. Also sorting is not possible.
Anyone else has such a problem and has figured out on how to resolve it?
(Spotlight works properly and is somehow a spare solution).
There seem to be many basic problems with the finder in Mavericks, this problem unfortunately has not been resolved also with the last software-release 10.9.2.
The quality strategy of Apple has to be questioned: I do not need 200 NEW functions, but I need the previous basic functions STILL working!

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.

Cannot open any file in PSE7 [was:Govtrumbull1776]
I have been using PSE-7 for a long time. But something happened to it that either involves the settings, or there is a corrupted file that won't allow me to open any file; new or existing; for editing. I uninstalled the program, and then reinstalled it thinking that that would fix the problem. But it didn't. It still won't open any file into the editor and won't drop in a copied file. It won't even open a new blank file. Thhis happened suddenly. I was using the program and it was working, then I tried to open another file and it wouldn't work at all.
The program works fine on another computer that I just loaded it onto, but something is keeping files from this compuer that I use every day. Has someone else had this happen with PSE, or does someone know of an easy fix? Any help would be appreciated.Good day!
