Inaccurate iPhone 5 gps

I have an iPhone 5 and and iPhone 3GS.  I have tried several golf yardage programs on them.  The iPhone 3GS is quite accurate but the IPhone 5 is all over the place.  When I go to use it it starts out with a very wrong yardage.  It then proceeds to change the yardage back and forth and will quite often show me way off of the course.  I don't have this problem with my old phone.  Has anyone else encountered this problem.

salam alykum,

  • Using "Find my iPhone", is GPS always on?

    Hi,
using "Find my iPhone", is GPS always on?
    Kyky

No.  Enabling find-my-iPhone only has the feature active when the mobileme account on th iDevice receives a push notification to send it's location.  Until you request it's location (via the mobileme web site or by use of the find-my-iPhone app on another iDevice) the feature is idle.  It is likely taking advantage of the location database so recently in the news too - using the most recently saved wifi or cell tower locations to more quickly determine it's location when the remote request for it comes in.  But it is not actively powering the GPS system all the time.  Having find-my-iPhone active on my iPhone 4 has had absolutely no noticeable affect on battery life, if that was part of your concern.

  • IPhone 3GS GPS problems

I upgraded to a 3GS a month ago. I noticed on a trip with my family that my GPS wasn't working properly. The GPS wouldn't find my position accurately, there was no pulsating blue ring around the blue dot, and the GPS wouldn't track when we were driving. My brother and sister-in-law's GPS was working perfectly on their iPhones. Just mine wasn't tracking.
So I went to the AT&T store and they replaced my iPhone 3GS with another brand new one. The GPS still isn't working properly.
So I went to the Apple Store in SoHo and found that none of the iPhones on display would get an accurate coordinate either. All of them were about a block off with to the west or north and none of them had the pulsating blue ring around the blue dot.
My brother and sis-in-law purchased and use their iPhones in a different city and their GPS works fine. My iPhone (purchased and used in NYC) and the SoHo store (in NYC) iPhones all did not work.
Do NYC used/purchased iPhones only have this issue? It really bothers me that on my 3G the GPS worked fine in the city, but after I upgraded to the 3GS and 3.1.3 the GPS no longer works. Also, the compass app ALWAYS needs to be reset whenever I use the app.
Any other NYC users having this problem?

There's a lot of discussion about receiving the GPS signal indoors. As the USAF Frequency Manager, who licenses the GPS Satellites, I'd like to weigh in on this subject.
The GPS signal is extremely weak, too weak to be received indoors more than 5-10 feet from a window.
A GPS receiver must receive at least 3 GPS satellite signals to get a fix.
For those who believe you're receiving the GPS signal indoors, what you're receiving is the triangulation of the cell phone towers, which is why it's not accurate.
For those in NYC or other highrise building areas, your GPS signal will not be accurate, if even received, because of the reflection of the GPS signals bouncing off of the highrise buildings. As the GPS signals bounce around among the buildings, they're delayed, and therefore not accurate when the GPS receiver finally locks onto them.
Since upgrading to OS 3.1.3, my iPhone 3G GPS has been having fits as well. I'm in Los Angeles, but when it gets cold (sitting in front of the A/C vent in it's holder) it stops working and shows that it's in Boulder, Colorado. It becomes accurate again after letting it warm back up, or turning off 3G. Go figure.

  • IPhone 3GS GPS

    Hi,
The GPS on my iPhone 3GS appeared to stop working. I traveled overseas recently and tried to locate myself with Maps app, and it failed to locate me. (I had cellular off, Wifi ON, LocationServices On, 3G off). The compass app also shows the previous GPS coordinates and never updates to the new location I am in at the moment.
I have tried rebooting my iphone numerous times, resetting network settings, resetting location services, tried different GPS mapping application, tapping the iphone against my hand, standing outside the house hoping to catch any GPS satellites, tried different combination of cellullar/3G/Wifi/LocationServices on/off states, and doing the steps that others suggested (after Google-ing) - all failed to provided me with a working GPS.
If I read "support.apple.com/kb/HT1975" correctly, then when I switch off both cellular and Wifi, iphone 3GS should be using the internal GPS to pinpoint me.
But, according to "support.apple.com/kb/HT1355", the GPS module is switched off if I switch off cellular...which contradicts the KB above..
I tried switch on & off cellular, but my GPS coordinates (as displayed in Compass app) remain wrong. Anyone has similar experience ? Do you think my iphone GPS module is faulty?
Any suggestions would be grateful. Thanks.
    Information:
    ===========================================================================
    "support.apple.com/kb/HT1975":
"If you're not within a clear line of sight to a GPS satellite, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS find you using Wi-Fi. If you're not in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, iPhone can find you using cellular towers."
    "support.apple.com/kb/HT1355":
"When airplane mode is on, [icon] appears in the status bar at the top of the screen, and no cell phone, radio, or Bluetooth signals are emitted from iPhone (and GPS is not available)."

Same problem here. On a trip abroad the GPS AND Compass completely stopped working. It worked for 7 days abroad before malfunctioning. It has been working flawlessly since I bought it 7 months ago. I´v tried all of the above measures and some more. At times the compass flickers around for a second before locking at Zero degrees North. Maps works as long as i dont try to locate myself. Then the blue haircross-button starts with the "spinning-Wheel" of loading, and just keeps going.
I´ve also noted that since this issue started last week the phone drains the battery a lot faster, even when I´m not fiddling around alot. I did a test some days before this issue and reached 20% in more than 5 days (>120h)!
The only test that I´ve read about and haven´t tested is the "rm -rf"-command witch requires a Jailbraked phone. I argue that I shouldn´t need to jailbrake it to get it to work properly.
So? Is it hardware or software?
    Glad for responses.
Wisconxin, did you get it right?

  • Sending position Lat / Long of my application for iPhone's GPS (Tomtom or other)

Hi! I do not know if it's possible, but I have the latitude and longitude and through my application would send to the iPhone's GPS, TOMTOM one example. It
    possible to do this?
    Thanks

Accuracy in your example is between 17 & 21 ft.
Remember, it's a consumer grade cellphone...

  • IPhone 3g GPS doesn't work

    Hi everyone,
I got a iPhone 3G the day it came out, and the GPS worked fine, now it doesn't.
Go into maps, press the target button, and it just goes round and round.
Location services is ON. I am in an open area where I should be getting a signal.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Felix

I had the endlessly spinning target button today, but I think it was because I was indoors in a large building, so it might have been stuck trying to find the GPS satellite signal. I tried again a little later and it worked when I was indoors, though it was fairly inaccurate.
If you're in an open area, I'm not sure. Did you have cell-coverage in that area? Because both cell coverage and some satellite coverage is (i think) necessary to get a good fix and download the maps.

  • White iphone 4 GPS issue

I just bought a white iphone 4, and I have noticed really inaccurate GPS locations - When I whip out my old iphone 3GS it tells me exactly where I am, and my friends with black iphone 4's do the same - anyone else experiencing this?  Anyone know how to solve this issue?

    Monkiedude24 wrote:
How would the color be an issue? It's white. White is white. Did they accidentally color it yellow or orange or something? That makes no sense. I've seen a few of them on some YouTube videos, and they looked fine to me. Personally, I'm guessing it is just a ploy to make all kinds of money when they finally release em for the holidays. Then all those people will be stuck waiting until iPhone 6! But whatever.
Wow, that's quite the conspiracy theory you have going there. Any U-tube video showing a white iPhone 4 is a fake.

  • IPhone 3GS GPS no longer working-What should I do?

I have a very annoying problem with my iPhone 3GS.
I have invested a considerable amount of money on Navigation applications and applications that use GPS.
GPS reception started to get unreliable and it was deteriorating over time.
At the beginning my navigation application (Navigon) was losing the GPS signal at random times.
Usually, after every iOS update the GPS reception was fine for a week or so, then problems started again.
Now, GPS is almost not working at all.
All the gps applications on my iPhone can detect where I am, however the precision is in unusable levels. It may show a position 300-400 meters away from where I really am. This happens in Navigon, Maps, etc.
Navigon always shows the red bar on the top telling me that the GPS reception is not adequate.
What should I do? Is there any case that this is a software related issue? Is there any way I can fix this? Some users suggested that I set up as New, but this will be my last resort as I have a lot of data that I want to retain on my iPhone.
Or is this really a hardware issue?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you

If you've restored the phone and then reinstalled the SW, it may be a HW problem. There's a way to test to see if the GPS is working in 'standalone mode". It's valid for the 3G, I think it works for the 3GS as well.
On the 3G, the GPS receiver is tied to the cellular transceivers. If it's in Airplane mode the GPS doesn't work. Taking the phone out of Airplane mode, but removing the SIM card (and therefore no cellular connection) it works just fine (OK, it's a bit slower, but it still works).
As a final test, take the phone out of Airplane mode, remove the SIM card and run any GPS aware programme (Maps is good, it's an Apple App, so that removes the 'I wonder if the app is at fault' question). Place the phone in a location where it has a good view of an unobstructed sky, and wait. After 10 or 15 minutes press the "find me" button on the bottom left of the screen. If the "blinking"  little blue dot doesn't appear, or if it says that your location can't be determined (there won't be a map), it sounds like the GPS is dead.
BTW, Apple doesn't reply to posts on the forum.
    Good luck,
    coop

  • IPhone as GPS receiver for Wi-Fi iPad

As you sadly know there is no such feature, the iphone hotspot provides ONLY internet.
    what other options are available?
    1. buy BT GPS receiver in addition? which one is best?
    2. Apps?
Please share and let me know how did you overcome this.
[it's really annoying that apple couldn't overcome this and develop location service sharing between idevices (when using personal hotspot)]

One solution is a Bad Elf GPS receiver for iPad - http://bad-elf.com/
They've been making external GPS receivers for iOS devices for several years, and have some good online reviews.  They make BT devices as well as devices to connect via the older 30-pin or lightening connectors.

  • Need help finding information about a photo taken on my iphone, date, gps

I took a photo a few months ago and I still have the photo on my phone, I need to find out the date, time and GPS coords of the photo, I had an app a long while back that would do this and I am pretty sure its free but I have no idea what it was called and its long since been deleted. I dont care what app I have to buy I really need this info and the phone itself will only show the location on a map but not give me the rest (as far as I can tell).
    Thanks!

I'm not sure which iPhone app provides for this, but a photo viewing software on your computer should.
Import the photo from your iPhone's Camera Roll with your computer and use a photo viewing software on your computer that reveals this data for the photo.

  • How to time tag GPS in Aperture - using iPhone photos GPS

    hello guys
I went to photo trip, now I need to geotag 1000 photos to multiple locations. Everytime I photographed I used Iphone to snap a gps coordinate.
    In Aperture, I clicked,
    Import gps data from Iphone.
It succesfully recognized the right time and locations and they are displayed on the map.
How do I tag the photos to time stamp automatically?

I use an application on the iPhone/iPad that records the track and download the track. In my case, Navionics HD will record the position every few seconds and collects them in a track.
In Aperture I load this track from the drop-down menu "GPS > Import GPS track".
Now I can move the cursor along the track and see the times along the track.
When I drag a photo to the track, it will show the offset between the capture time of the photo and the time of that position along the track. SO I can place it precisely by looking for the position with the least possible difference.
When you drag multiple photos to the track, the time of the first selected photo should match the time you'll see on the track when you drop the pin.
The second option "Import GPS from iPhone photos" is supposed to create a track like above, but I never got that to work.

  • Can I use my iPhone 5 GPS' to give me direction while traveling in Europe?

Can I use my iPhone 5's GPS ( with global plan) while traveling in Europe?

Sure. I'd suggest you install a mapping application where the data is stored locally on your phone. Much faster & less data usage.

  • Unofficial chargers causing jerky / choppy / jumpy / inaccurate iPhone touchscreen

Today I finally discovered the cause of an issue that has bugged me for over a year and wanted to share it here. Basically I was having lots of issues with the touchscreen being jerky / choppy / jumpy... It kept being inaccurate, thinking I was tapping in the wrong place, it wouldn't scroll smoothly without jumping around etc etc, you get the idea. I've finally figured out that it only happens while charging and only if I use some third-party (non-Apple) chargers.
It ties in with this archived thread as well - https://discussions.apple.com/message/9832369#9832369 - but the archived thread doesn't specifically identify that the cause is unofficial chargers.
The type of charger causing this issue for me looks like an official Apple one but it isn't. Here's a photo:
I bought a few of these cheap chargers a while back so I could keep a couple around the house and one at work. I frequently use my phone while charging, sat on the sofa, watching TV, etc. Today at work I was using my phone fine, then plugged it in to charge and noticed it started being jerky. So I unplugged it and the problem went away. Naturally I plugged it in and unplugged it again a few more times just to be sure the problem was being caused by this and it definitely was.
It so happened that I had an official Apple charger at work as well, so I swapped over to this (using the same cable) and guess what - the problem disappeared again.
This does not affect all non-Apple chargers though... At home I now have a couple of four-port USB charging units. One from PortaPow and another that is a generic white one from eBay. Both of these are able to charge my iPhone without exhibiting the jerky touchscreen problem. However it's worth noting that both of these can supply decent amps (2.1A, or even more) whereas when I measured the charger shown in the photo using my USB volt/amp meter it was topping out around 0.7A-ish.
Anyway, I hope this thread might be useful for other people who are perhaps tearing their hair out trying to work out why their touch interface is being all choppy and inaccurate. Hopefully I've included enough different words for "jerky" to ensure this thread is found when people are searching for the issue.

I see the same behavior with my iPhone 5 using a Belkin B2E027 4-Port USB Power Charger.  I suspect that this is due to conducted noise on the cable from the switching converter in the charger.  I might try adding a ferrite toroid to the cable to see if that helps.
