Inaccurate White Balance Of 808 In Low Light - Any...

I find the white balance and exposure of the Pureview 808 in indoor low light shots to be erratic, mostly inaccurate in most shooting modes. Although the predecessor N8 produces a noisier and darker image that is lacking in clarity (in low light), I find its white balance to be more accurate than the Pureview 808.
In low to dim lighting, the white balance on the Pureview 808 always appear to be cooler than actual conditions apart from the image being slightly over-exposed.
Below are my observations on the Pureview 808 (only in low light):-
1) In "Scenes", Night mode will produce an image that is slightly brighter than actual conditions, slightly overexposed. White balance is off.
2) In "Creative", Auto, Incandescent and Fluorescent modes, - as above.
3) In "Creative", Sunny and Cloudy modes will produce an image that is truer to actual conditions. White balance is more accurate in these modes.
The N8 in Night mode (with white balance in Auto) produces a more accurate white balance than the Pureview 808, though the image suffers from noise and is slightly under-exposed.
Not exactly a criticism of the Pureview 808 as the overall image quality in low light at high ISO levels is still pretty remarkable with excellent clarity and low levels of noise. It's just the minor issue in the white balance which seems to be always off in low light.
In good light, bright sunny conditions outdoors, no issues.
For those who own the Pureview 808, may I ask how do you cope with this slight anomaly in the Pureview 808? Will there be software update in future to address this flaw?
Any information would be appreciated.

It is unfortunate that sample images cannot be posted here. I have some sample images which not only demonstrate the inaccurate white balance of the Pureview 808 in low light but also the erratic exposure which seems to render an image in low lighting conditions to appear brighter than what it is in real life, an over-exposed image.
Below is the link to CNET's review which also highlights the inaccurate white balance of the 808.

  • White Balancing pictures under heavy blue lighting

I am looking at LightRoom to process RAW images from my D3100.  I'll be shooting my reef aquarium which is under heavy blue lighting (about 450nm).  I can balance the pictures in Capture NX2, however in Lightroom the settings are maxed when using the dropper against an 18% grey card and the picture is not completely balanced.
any suggestions on how I can balance beyond the max of the sliders, or alternatives to balancing?
here is an old picture of the first day I got the lights and was learning the new camera -  pre (JPG version from shooting RAW+JPG) and post balance on the RAW picture done in NX2:
*** note that the tank doesn't look this blue, I'm learning that our eyes see things differently than the camera.
    Thanks!

    Just a couple of thoughts:
    1. Marine Aquarium lighting (particularly reef-friendly lighting systems) doesn't always broadcast a full spectrum of light.  In the same way, gymnasium sodium vapor lights do not broadcast all the colors of the continuous spectrum. In less-than-full spectrum lighting it can be nearly impossible to white balance as you are missing key color components.
    2. Water absorbs different colors of light at different rates. What is balanced at the top of an aquarium may be deficient at the bottom of an aquarium. It is possible to have a graduated differential in your white balance in a single shot if you cover a sufficient range of depth. As you go deeper in the tank, the ambient lights (fluorescents and/or tungsten) start to become significant to the overhead aquaria lights.
Neither of those solves your issue today but it should suggest that you might have to live with these limitations when photographing aquarium where you cannot provide your own light.

  • Adobe Bridge - White balance metadata

When I browse raw files from my Canon EOS Rebel XT/350D in Adobe Bridge I always look at the Metadata tab to check for the f-stop value, speed, white balance settings, etc. of the currently-selected raw image file.
I noticed that the pictures shot in Automatic White Balance appear on the upper-left portion of the Metadata tab as an icon indicating AWB. However, whenever I take pictures with manually-set white balances, such as shade, day light, tungsten, etc., the metadata tab no longer indicates the white balance I chose, instead, it either shows an icon of a camera or two dashes, as in --.
Is there any way I can set Adobe Bridge to show the appropriate White Balance icon for pictures I take with manually-set white balances?

    Hi Curt,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, White Balance is checked in preferences/metadata. All of the Exposure metadata entries are also checked.
I forgot to mention that my version of Camera Raw is 4.5 (the latest).
You know, although White Balance is checked, I cannot find a White Balance text entry on any of the metadata lists (File properties, IPTC core, Camera Data (EXIF), etc.). The only place where I can see the White Balance setting in on the upper left corner of the Metadata tab, under the f-stop value.
Here is a personal question for you: When you browse your pictures in Adobe Bridge and you select one that was taken with a specific White Balance (not Auto), does your Adobe Bridge display an icon for that particular White Balance setting? I just want to eliminate the possibility that this happening only in my computer.
Thanks a lot for your time and attention.

  • Tethered and White Balance question

I am using the latest Aperture and also the latest Aperture Hot Folder to shoot tethered using my Canon5d to my powerbook g4 1.67ghz. The issue is shooting images with the same white balance applied as I shoot. Is there an obvious way to do this that I am missing? Or does anyone have an idea how to do this using Applescript? My main app to shoot is CaptureOne and white balance is quite easy to do using this app. I am trying to integrate Aperture into my shooting workflow not just my post workflow. Any ideas would be appreciated.

i don't know what your canon is like, but the D200 also has the ability to 'read' a white balance setting (probably from the same sort of calibration card that you're talking about... i've never tried one, but often want one). this calibrates the in-camera white balance setting based on the light you're shooting with. this again would hopefully get you close to correct without software post production (this is a theme for me: shoot correctly and then spend less time correcting).
and you've still got the ability to tweak if its not perfect and then lift/stamp those tweaks everywhere else. i like the fact that CapOne had thought of that for tethered shooting, but i also don't like to stretch and pull my image data any further away from the raw data than necessary.
keep us posted on how you finalize the workflow

  • White Balance Why ?

Hello All, I am by professional standards a beginner videographer of about 5 years experience. I have seen lots of advice around saying set your white balance for this or that lighting. I film a lot of theatre shows with lots of vivid colour, when I used auto white balance the colours were always wrong different shades ETC so I bought a grey card and set my white balance using this and the colours now look very similar to what I am filming. My question is why would you change your white balance according to lighting ? surely once it is set correctly you want it to accurately reflect what the camera is seeing.

I seldom have the opportunity to do a manual white balance at stage shows, because when I arrive to set up cameras, the house lights are on and the curtain closed and I have no access to the "actual show lighting" until the show is going. So I just use the "Incandescent" setting on all cameras and that has worked well for me. Lighting can and will change throughout the show also, so at least if all cameras are set the same, the color is consistent and I can make tweaks when editing.
Of course, when I have the opportunity I will always go for the manual white balance (or preset that looks good) for best results.
Different light sources (sunlight, overcast, incandescent, flourescent, etc.) all have different color "temperatures". Some are warmer (redder), some are cooler (more blue), and so forth. I vaguely remember some of this from sixtth-grade science class, with "kelvin" numbers and such. The human eye compensates for this automatically and always see white objects as white, and other colors then follow suit. Video cameras are not so good at this - AWB attempts it, but doesn't always get it right. That is why the presets and manual option, to TELL the camera, THIS IS WHITE. Once it is calibrated to what "white" is, then all the colors look correct under that particular light source.
To a degree, footage shot with the wrong WB can be corrected during editing, but often it can be so far out of whack that it never looks quite right. There is no substitute for getting it right when shooting! If someone looks like a blueberry or a sun-burned Martian on tape, good luck getting a nice skin tone in post....

  • Turn off auto white balance on USB camera

    Hi,
I'm using a USB camera to capture images of bright colored lights. I have the light configured and working in MAX and Labview 2009. My problem is that the camera is set to auto white balance in MAX and Labview, and I can't seem to change this to no white balance. When the bright lights are imaged the white wall behind the light turns the complimentary color to the light as the software attempts to 'white balance' the entire image. There doesn't seem to be an option in Labview or MAX to turn this white balance to anything other than 'auto.' I've attached the program and a couple screen shots to show the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi!
This might be late, but for the sake of reference I will answer anyway.
You should use 2 property nodes.
    To the porpery: "CameraAttributes->ActiveAttribute"
you should wire the string: "CameraAttributes::WhiteBalance::Mode", and to the property "ValueDBL" you should wire 1 (for manual).
Then repeat this on a second property node but change "mode" to "value" and wire the desired value to "ValueDBL."
For a more complete description see my post on a similar problem with autofocus (change "Focus" to "WhiteBalance" and it is the same as described above).

  • Cannot get white-balance correction to work

I have some diving video that needs white balance correction.  I am trying out the PE11 trial.
I've tried smart-fix as well as the 3-way correction tool.  I've used the dropper to select something that should be white, but it makes little to no difference.
    Any ideas why ?

As an experiment I went for another dive today, this time taking the same camera (Canon S110 with underwater white balance mode active) as well as a GoPro with a red filter.  The video from the GoPro seems to have much more colour in it so I think it's a case of the Canon not capturing as much of that spectrum.  I'll do another dive tomorrow and manually set the white balance to see if it makes any difference.  I'm so use to shooting on the GoPro that I was surprised by the reduced colour in the Canon.
Is there any way to determine how much of red / green / blue is available in the video using PE11 ?
    Thanks for the reply.

  • D2X auto white balance handling?

How does Aperture get on with NEFs shot with auto white balance on a D2X? It was a problem in CS2.
And...when I saw the demo at the Nikon show in London, they were running it on a Quad. I loved the ability to zoom in on the thumbnails, but how fast is that on something lowlier than a Quad, like a dual 2.5?
(Thinks: can I go on finding enough queries to hold myself back until the first update?)
    Nick

    Nick,
I generally shoot in auto white balance and I have not noticed any problems with my D2X images. I actually expected some issues based on all the bashing over the encrypted NEFs with the newer Nikons.
With now just shy of 10,000 images in my library, Aperture runs very nice on my Dual 2.5.

  • Is there anyway of overriding the d700 white balance fine tuning when importing to lightroom?

I have imported a large number of my raw photos from my d700 into lightroom.  The white balance fine tuning setting was b4 creating a blue bias which I would like to remove.  When I copy directly from the camera to my iPad there is no bias and the photos look good however once I import into either lightroom or photoshop I must adjust each photo to remove the bias.  There must be a better way.

My suggestion would be for you to adjust the white balance to your satisfaction along with any other adjustments that you think are consistently out of line with what you want. Then, create new defaults for that camera.

  • 808 flashlight = white balance red?

    Dear friends,
I just buy a pureview 808. When I take photo indoor with daylight lamp at night, the flashlight is on. However, the photo is incredibly a red one, nothing like the scene. I believe it is a wrong white balance.  I do not find an option for "flash light" in the white balance selections.  All options result in a red colored photo with the coldest one (bluest one) as weaker.
    Any walkthrough or walk arounds?
    Thank you!

    Cheers for replying
Being a long term DLSR photographer I always use creative mode and started out using AWB. Even in AWB mode there shouldn't be so much variation as in my sample pics, so I decided to use fixed white balance with the intent of forcing the colour balance ot be the same.  but you're right, often with a dynamic scene there's not time or place to mess about trying different settings to correct waht a fixed AWB shoudl get right in the first place
I think there's a bug, but it's not an easy thing to get manufacturers to always admit this.   I will soon twitter Damian Dinning, the guy who was heavily involved with the development of the 808's camera and see if he has some comment.
I appreciate the 808 is the first Pureview model, but that shouldn't mean a lack of after-release updates to fix problems.
Another weird scarnio I've come across is that when setting manual ISO to something higher in order to force a faster shutter speed, the 808 still choose s toexpose with lower shutter speeds. For example on my DSLRs if I use auto mode and it selects something like. ISO 100 / 1/50s. For the same scene, if I preset ISO400 the speed jumps to 1/200s as it should. This doesn't happen on the 808. The speedwill remain at 1/50 on many shots, and unwanted motion blur remains
There's some weird stuff going on
When the 808 getr's it right it takes amazing pics for a phone, and in fact that's the reason I bought it. I still ahven't put a SIM card in it :

  • Separate luminance and color white balance

I know this is a quite peculiar idea, but i roundtrip to Photoshop a lot just for this..
we all know white balance affects how contrast and luminance of different image areas are interpreted by the software, and at times, especially in low or mixed light, I find that the 'color wise correct' white balance is often different to the 'luminance wise best' one..
i hope this doesn't sound too tortuous, and i really don't know if it would be hard to implement, but it would definitely help a lot with image quality..

    ok..
I usually do this for low light portraits or mixed light situation, but it really works for everything, and is quite similar to the "tone" part of topaz detail plugin, for example..
we always choose WB to have a pleasant or correct color rendition, right?
but if we are in black and white, different WB settings affect different areas of the image, lightwise..
and i find out that there is always a sweet spot, depending on the lighting, where noise is better and shadows are better distributed, and and that usually doesn't match to the color WB sweet spot..
this is the original auto wb image
    and its bw equivalent
here wb  is tweaked to better balance shadows and contrast
but you can see colors are way off..
    to give a better idea..
    original:
two wbs, obtained with layers color blend mode of original onto bw tweaked
i realize at this size the difference may look small, but it really changes the balance of light, especially with low light or underexposed or mixed light shots..
    hope now it's more clear..
    cheers

  • 6D low light video

    Hello,
I'm trying to shoot video in low light and I'm getting some extra hue and contrast.  When I shoot stills, what I see on the screen is what I see on my computer.  When I flip over to video (with out changing ISO or WB settings) the images are darker and have a green hue.
I need what I'm seeing on the screen of the camera to be what I see on my computer monitor after I download of the card.
    Any ideas?
    Current setting: Exp 1/30, ISO 8000, WB 3200, f-stop 2.8
What I've tried: IPB and All-I compression, different SD cards rated for different speeds, formatting the card with the camera, and shrinking still images to 1920X1280 - Same results ever case

I don't know about you, but my stills (RAW) are always darker than they are on my camera (6D); which is a jpg and might be part of the source.  It wasn't near as noticable on my 450D.   I just learned to adapt my eye and I check my histogram anyway.  But I'd say the actual image looks about a 1/2 stop darker on my computer than the camera.  I don't think it's abnormal to have small differences between the camera screen and computer.  THere are too many variables to deal with to be consistent.
The most obvious explanation for that phenomenon (which means that you've probably already considered it and ruled it out) is that you've turned up the brightness of the camera's display screen. That setting is independent of all else, and it's easy to turn it up when the ambient light is high and then later forget that you did it. And maybe you didn't have the screen turned up as high on your 450D.
Also, of course, even a RAW image gets darker if subjected to any white balance correction (because that correction can only subtract, not add, light). I'd expect the screen to display the corrected image, but conceivably it doesn't.
Yes, that was the first thing that crossed my mind, but not just that the setting was turned up, but that the display is simply brighter.  Although my old 450D seemed to be closer to the actual exposure it was terrible in the shadows.  Things would look black on the camera but I'd still have detail on the actual photo.
I didn't bother looking for a brightness setting on my 6D for several reasons.  1) the brightness is really nice when you're out in bright sunlight; 2) I recognize there are far too many variables to expect any consistency between a small jpg with settings applied on a 3" backlit LCD to a full sized RAW file on a calibrated IPS monitor in a dim room; 3) I check my historgram constantly,  I never trust what I see on the image, it's just a preview to get you in the ballpark; and 4) the IQ and recovery on the 6D is so good that I know if the image looks decent on the camera then I'll be able to make it work in post.

  • Creative Ultra for Notebook, white balance not working??

After years of use with my Creative Notebook Cam Pro I decided to upgrade and get the Ultra for Notebook because it's a CCD and works better in lower light conditions.
The drivers install fine however I cannot adjust the white balance nothing changes when I click apply. I have both 98SE and XP drivers installed and it appears that the bug is present in both sets of drivers.
This is a big disappointment because using this cam indoor with artificial lighting is next to being useless. Furthermore there's no saturation controls included in the drivers so I couldn't reduce the colour to b/w even if I wanted to.
As a product that's been on the market for nearly 2 years I'm surprised that no bug fixes have been issued for this problem I'm sure it's been mentioned before here?
Does anyone know if CLabs will fix the problem soon because as it stands this product isn't worthy of my time or money.
