Inbox and Sent Messages Disappeared

Started the mail program (v 4.2) and received a new email. Clicked on it and I'm not sure what happened but all Inbox and sent messages are now gone. Very strange. My iPhone shows all messages but the iMac shows none of them. All other mailboxes are intact. What folder do I use with Time Machine to refresh all of them?
Thanks

For some reason the account had been dis-enabled in preferences. Re-enabling has reproduced the messages. Very strange!

I was trying to recharge my Nokia N97 with a blackberry USB charger. It worked but then I realized all my inbox and sent messages have disappeared!! What happened? Can I find them back?

    Hi,
Firefox and other browsers can only display the emails. All the content, emails, settings etc. are stored at and received from the remote site/server. If an add-on is being used with Firefox, you can try to check its '''Options''' in '''Tools '''('''Alt '''+ '''T''') > '''Addons''' > '''Extensions'''. Otherwise you may have to check the mail archives in Gmail and Windows Live sites. You can also check the trash/deleted folders in the respective mail sites for any mails that may have been manually deleted within usually 30 days.

  • Mail Inbox and Sent box disappeared

The Inbox and Sent boxes appear empty and do not respond. Trying to move messages from other boxes to the Inbox results in a message saying the box does not exist.
Not able to send or receive mail to the computer. MobileMe works.
Have recovered the last inbox, but cannot move the recovered msgs to the Inbox.
Cannot rebuild the Inbox as that item in the menu is grayed out.
Reindexing the boxes does not solve the issue.
Questions: Is there a fix within the current configuration that does not lose the contents of either box? Would downloading a new Mail app fix the problem and recognize the old mailboxes? If I have to install a new Mail app, where do I get it?
    Appreciate any help

all the mail content (but not the headers) in my Inbox and Sent box disappeared.
Setting up the same account twice in Mail is probably what got you into trouble. I suspect Mail simply removed all mailboxes associated with that account without checking to see whether they belonged to the original or the dupe.
Do the disappeared messages from my Inbox, and their attachments, all exist somewhere on my Mac even though I can't see them (I have searched the Library)?
Very unlikely. Try looking in the ~/Library/Mail/ folder (where '~' means "your user folder). See if there are any mailboxes still there that might be appropriate, and try duplicating them to the desktop and then import them into a new mailbox. That's unlikely to work, but you never know.
Is there any utility out there that might help me to find them?
If they're really gone, no. If you have backups, you can restore them from the backup, of course. But without backups, the best you'll be able to do is try a data recovery tool, which is unlikely to give very good results in this case, but would be worth a try if there's no other option.
And what happens to attachments in Mail nowadays, when there seems to be no separate Attachments folder?
Attachments are stored with the message, just like they are sent across the internet as part of the message. They are not automatically decoded and saved as individual files somewhere. That happens when you either open them or tell Mail to save them somewhere.

My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.

  • Inbox and Sent messages are gone?

Messages in both inbox and sent messages prior to mid-November of 2011 are gone. I had thousands of messages going back several years, and they're gone. I didn't delete. • Messages In Inbox and sent mailbox have disappeared

I have been using my mac e-mail for a considerable time with no problems however in the last month, I have lost virtually all of my messages in both my inbox and sent mailbox> I have checked my preferences and the deletion of e-mails is set to 'never'. Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to stop it from happening. Thanks.

    You’re welcome.
If the *.emlx files associated with those messages are gone from the filesystem, rebuilding mailboxes or re-creating the index cannot make them reappear.
There is no way to know what may have happened if you don’t know when it happened and what did you do that could have a bearing on it. What you mention about moving data between computers could certainly have a bearing on it when it happened the first time, but there is no way to know what the problem exactly was in that case either with the information you’ve provided...
If the messages are nowhere to be found and you don’t have a backup, you may try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Beware, however, that anything you’ve done with the computer since the messages were deleted may have caused them to be overwritten, which makes me believe your chances of recovering them now are pretty low...

  • Inbox and Sent emails just disappeared

45 minutes ago I went to check my mail on my computer and my inbox is empty! There was mail in it an hour ago, and then it just disappeared. I didn't change or move anything, the inbox was just empty. I then checked my sent box and all my sent emails were there, checked back 5 minutes later and their gone! The emails in my deleted and junk folders are still there. I checked online through icloud.com and Inbox and sent mail are empty there too, as well as my phone.
I say again, I didn't delete, move or change anything in my mail, it was there and then it was gone. Is anyone else having this happen? Where did my mail go?
I am running a intel Mac Pro tower with Lion 10.7.2 and a iphone 4 with IOS 5.1

For two or three days now, I've had to go online and log into www.me.com to check my Apple mail account because ALL the folders in Mail on my iMac were showing empty.  When looking at preferences to see if maybe something had gotten messed up there, I "registered" for MobileMe again, even though I'd chosen to "move to the iCloud" a few weeks ago.  Suddenly my mail reappeared on my iMac.  In Safari I was told I needed to "move to the iCloud" by June 30 (which I'd already done, as mentioned above) so I clicked it again.  So far, my mail folders and their contents are showing up on my computer, but who knows how long it will last.
I've also been having problems with my iPod Touch - accessing my mail.  I keep getting a message that my password is incorrect, but it's the same password that I've been using to log in online.  Weird.

  • Messages from the Inbox and Sent folders are being transfered to the Outbox

Why are the messages from my Inbox and Sent folders being transfered to my Outbox?

There is probably something wrong with the Envelope Index file. In the few cases I've seen something similar, however, there was also something wrong with the structure of the Mail folder, and we must fix that before trying to re-create the index.
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post, to let me see the names of the files and folders present at the root level of the Mail folder.
Before actually posting that information, you may edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you wish to keep private, e.g. you may replace any real username with "username" if you wish; similarly, you may disguise any domain names you don't want to be revealed. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Now, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. With that folder open, repeat the process to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains. Again, you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private.
Finally, locate the account folders within ~/Library/Mail/ -- their name begins with the account type (POP, IMAP, .Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. For each account folder, repeat the process to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's ~ folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • I just opened my mail on icloud and all messages disappeared from the last year! I have one email left in my inbox which is the most recent. I moved to icloud 2 weeks ago and it has been working fine until now. How can I retrieve old messages? Thank you.

I guess you could try but I don't believe Apple can help with activation lock issues.  They may, however, be able to determine if the Apple ID belongs to one of you and reset the password for you if you can prove your identity.
You might want to try calling Apple by going to https://expresslane.apple.com; click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'.  In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.  Perhaps they can help determine if it's your ID and reset the password for you (and they probably have more expertise in doing this than the Apple store).

  • Switching accounts deleted old inbox and sent mail

I switched internet service providers. In Mail I went to Preferences and deleted the old account. I didn't realize this would cause my old e-mails that were still in the inbox and sentmail to disappear. I see that some attachments that came with old message are now in the trash. Is there a way I can recover the old inbox and sentmail contents?
    Thank you.

Before deleting an account in Tiger Mail, the following warning message is provided:
Are you sure you want to remove the (account type here) account “XXXXXXXXXX”?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Copies of messages on the mail server, if they exist, are not affected.
This is usually ignored or not completely understood but is based on the Mail.app filing structure so now the long winded answer for the reason.
Many other email clients utilize a single large database file which is not dependent on individual account and associated mailbox filing. When creating an account in Mail, an account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) is created in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail using the Finder. For POP type accounts, the following mailbox (mbox) folders are created within the account named folder when the function is used by the account: INBOX.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox, Deleted Messages.mbox and Junk.mbox (when Junk mail is set to automatic). The mbox folders within the account named folder represent the account named mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk (when Junk mail is set to automatic) in the Mail.app mailboxes drawer.
When deleting an account in Mail, the account named folder at Home > Library > Mail is deleted at that time and as the warning message indicates, the associated account mailboxes within the account named folder are also deleted. You must select OK after the warning message appears.
It would be preferable for the account named folder to be moved to the hard drive Trash can which requires an additional step to delete but this is not what occurs.
To have any hope of recovering your data, you need to immediately stop using your system and then purchase a copy of a recovery tool such as Tech Tool Pro (Micromat), Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) or FileSalvage (subrosasoft) which have data recovery tools. I've used FileSalvage with good results.
    http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
The chances generally aren't really good even so, but short of sending your drive to a data recovery service (expensive), such utilities are your only hope.
Note that the more you use your system before you attempt recovery, the more likely it is that the system will overwrite the sections of the drive where the data you want to recover is stored, rendering it unrecoverable by any means. You should therefore stop using the system completely until you get and try to use one of the file recovery tools.
This also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a regular backup of the Mail folder and other important data.

  • Apple Mail and Sent Messages

I have been having some issues with my iCloud email account and Mavericks. I wasn't sure if this was an iCloud issue or an issue with Apple Mail. It has to do with saving Sent messages. A couple of months ago, I had some issues with Mail. I deleted the com.apple.mail and com.apple.MailServiceAgent folders in ~Library/Containers and I deleted any plist files in Preferences. It worked for a couple months. Then, about two weeks ago, I noticed Sent emails were not be saved any where on my iMac.
So, I repeated the procedure and created Mail anew. It worked great for about a week. I always have the "save sent messages to server" option turned on. Then, one day I got some kind of message that a folder called "Sent" could not be created on the server. Looking at Mail, my Sent folder was completely gone. All of my previously saved messages in Sent were moved to the folder INBOXToDos.mbox/Sent Messages.
At first I thought iCloud itself was messed up. I logged into iCloud. There was no Sent mailbox, and there was no INBOXToDo mailbox. So, now I have no sent messages anywhere in iCloud. I sent an email from Safari in iCloud, and then, iCloud created the Sent mailbox.
Still, my Mavericks iMac will not save sent messages anywhere. I need help sorting this out and don't want to lose my previous sent messages even though they seem to be stored in some wonky folder.

Where is the Sent Messages folder listed? If it is not under MAILBOXES but in an IMAP folder, select it and go to Mailbox menu, Use this mailbox for>Sent.
It should disappear and sent messages then appear in the Sent folder.

  • Sent messages disappearing from Mail

I checked the threads. This has been a problem for some, but not me before that I remember, and I haven't come across a solution that works for me.
This morning I had an email message disappear after I tried to send it. Sometime later I heard the swoosh sound, and it's there in the sent mailbox, so I didn't think much about it. This evening, after taking much time to carefully compose a long detailed technical message to some actors and performers in a musical I'm producing, I clicked send, and the message disappeared. No draft, no sent, and no "swoosh". About a minute later, I heard a swoosh. But nothing else happened.
I'm about losing my **** right here. The most frustrating feeling ever.
Now, an hour later, still no message. I've checked everywhere I could think of. I looked in the mail folders in the Library. I found the email I sent prior to this. It's late at night, and I have no way of finding out whether it was received (somehow I doubt it), and now I'm worried some other critical messages I've sent out may have also vanished.
I depend on email for my work, and I've counted on mail to do the job for many years. It's always worked for me. Now this. I'd love to keep using mail, but I depend on my email for business, and I can't afford for this to ever happen again.
Has anyone else experienced this lately and has anyone else come up with a solution? Until I do, I'm taking special precautions such as manually copying the message as I go/revise and pasting/saving into text. I wish I didn't have to, but I obvioulsy can't count on mail.

Please see my post and how it was resolved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1181356&tstart=0
When I had that issue, I tried using Apple Mail app and noticed that Sent Mails are getting lost. Try sending an email using WebMail. You might see similar "Permission Denied" error. Try restarting the server and see if the issue still exists.

  • Sent messages disappeared

I have two computers, a new Intel Imac on 10.7 and an old PowerPc MacBook running the final OS for that. My Apple Mail checks both my IMAP server for work and my .Mac account and both lost substantial chunks of Sent mail a couple of days ago. I don't even know where to begin looking for what might have happened. There are many folder on the IMAP account but only the Sent mail has been effected. Any ideas?

Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox & Sent Messages.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox and the Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new INBOX.mbox and Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when received and sending the next message with this account.
This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new received or sent messages with this account while working on the old INBOX.mbox and Sent Messages.mbox files to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the INBOX.mbox and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents. In addition to the package content file names, please provide the size of each package file.
Repeat for the Sent Messages.mbox and provide the same for this mailbox.

  • Lost deleted and sent messages

    Hi Folks,
I recently changed over my pop account to imap. It's working fine but when I send mail or delete a message they don't show up in the sent or trash folders. Any idea where they are stored now or how to assign them to the appropriate folders again?
    Thanks much!

it's weird - the only account showing in the Preferences/Account window is the server account...yet that never showed up in my mailbox window before all of this happened....it doesn't list the mailboxes on the HD.....btw, the settings for the server mailbox behaviors are for only the deleted messages to be moved to the trash mailbox...nothing else is checked....Trash is not to be saved on the server.....Now I've just gone to assign "uses" to the mailboxes on the .mac account and it has created new folders close to what I had originally....but when I close the mail app and reopen it, it defaults back to the boxes on the server with small icons....the boxes on the HD are Inbox (Inbox icon), Sent (paper airplane icon), Trash (Trash can icon), Junk (folder).....but I still cannot assign use to the HD Junk folder....the Inbox and Sent box seem to be working OK now....The Trash is broken up into "Trash "On My Mac" and Trash on the server. I never had that before...don't know how it got there.....This is all just so weird....I never had any trouble with this up until the last couple of days......What is happening to my Mac?
