Inbox is empty 1000s of emails missing

Thunderbird is always up and running. Got back from work and inbox was entirely empty. Had 1000s of emails in that folder. I have account settings to never delete anything. There were similar questions in this forum but not a single suggested action. I read something about deleting some global search something or other but the location of said (file?) was kept secret, or at least wasn't revealed.
I tried closing TB and re-opening it. At that point I believe I was upgraded, but still no emails. I cannot express my displeasure without the use of ICBMs. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I think it odd that there were already multiple questions about this issue with absolutely NO help provided. Just a bunch of other people with the same problem, and no answers.
Windows8 using Start 8 Shell. I am still receiving new emails for now at least.

what account type IMAP or POP? What your describing sounds like an IMAP account which has recently has a phone attached which is deleting the mail as it gets it.
Although Anti virus can delete an entire inbox and proudly announce it has "saved you" from something. The ongoing issues sounds like something different.

Hi Jim. Welcome to the forums.
You need to go to the settings of the Outlook account, and depending on the version of Outlook you have, you need to go to Advanced  settings (may be under More Settings ...) and tick a box "Leave a copy of messages on the server"

Lord K.  Thank you. Yes I am within the 90 time period, however I travel Intertionally and I can not receive not make a call to Apple. I was just at the Genius Bar in Chicago and they said, don't worry about it.  It just floats out there, however, I can not recover my messages on a flash drive. I need to go back to my old computer which I don't have with me.  My messages were in folders for a lawsuit.  It is going to take an incredible amount of work for me to, you have no Idea.  We are talking thousands of pages!  I the defendent will have them during discovery so I am not so worried.  However, I can not bring them to him on a Flashdrive when I meet with him without an extraordinary amount of presssure on my part.  THis is not just some little email issue. • Mysterious triangle left ot POP account name, emails missing in Inbox

I got a problem with the Mail inbox of a POP account. There is a number, that shows the count of unread emails, however the pane that displays the list of emails is blank. However to the left of th account name is a triangle, as if there were folders underneath it. Clicking it changes only its direction however there are no additional folders and the pane to the right remains blank.
The new incoming emails are correctly retrieved from the POP server, I can find them in the Finder (~/Library/Mail/(account name)/INBOX.mbox/messages) and I can click each of them in Mail. Why are they not shown in the list of messages in Mail?
However the indicated number of unread messages is much larger than the number of emails I can find in INBOX.mbox. I know the missing messages are somewhere on my harddisk but I can not find them anymore!
I have already rebuilt my mailboxes by deleting the Envelope Index file, however the "hidden" emails did not re-appear and the mysterious triangle appeared again!
How can I get rid of the mysterious triangle, make the mails in the INbox again visible and how can I find the missing messages indicated in the counter?

I am using the Backup application of Mac (version for Tiger) and I am regularly backing up the whole user.
I think, I will now proceed as follows:
    1) Make a clone of my HD to my external drive (what program do you recommend for this, in order that there is no risk for overwriting?)
    2) Migrate the user to the iMac of my friend, using Migration Assistant
3a) If this brings back my lost email, I would get a new HD and Tiger installed on my Powerbook and move the user back
3b) If the migration does not solve the problem, I would try to repair the way you proposed before and migrate the user to Leopard after the repair.
I have forwarded my email now to another account and for this reason I do not have to hurry. I prefer to take my time, in order not to loose my missing emails.
Do you agree with the way forward I have sketched above?

  • Emails missing from inbox on iphone

I have a good number of emails missing from the inbox on my iphone. My only email is gmail. The emails are random, not from any particular person or place. The messages are in the inbox on my imac and also when I access gmail account on my pc. They are simply missing on the iphone. If I access my gmail account on the pc and star one of the messages, then it does appear on my iphone in the starred folder. Remove the star and it's gone (still doesn't show up in inbox). I just noticed this yesterday because I was looking for something, so don't really know how long it has been like this. I have looked at iphone settings for mail but don't see anything to give me a clue why this is happening.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

There are two things you can try.
    1. Move the file com.apple.mail.plist from your ~user/Library/Preferences folder to the desktop and relaunch Mail. If that's cured the problem, delete the Preferences file you moved to the desktop, otherwise move it back again overwriting the new one Mail just created.
    2. Try reinstalling Mail from your Install DVD - this only reinstalls the app itself not the mailboxes, but take a backup of them first, just to be on the safe side.

  • TS3899 My mail account shows 1340 unread emails, yet the inbox is empty with no subfolders.

My "Mail" app shows that I have 1340 unread emails in red.  When I go to the inbox, it says 1340 unread emails, yet there is none in the inbox.  I have checked my mail provider adn there is no emails there either.

First if you have multiple inboxes please make sure that you're looking at the all inboxes category. If this is correct then try removing the account and adding it back. If no joy
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Why are my emails missing from my inbox?

Hi everyone. I have a hotmail account that I have synchronized with my iPad, and it has worked very well for several months now. Today when i access my inbox via the 'Mail' icon on my iPad, the inbox is empty - it shows none of the messages i have had there all this time. When i log into hotmail via a browser on another machine, everything appears normal. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • I see briefly the content of my Mail Inbox of an IMAP account, then everything disappear and the inbox is empty

    Hi There,
I have beeen experiencing for the past few days some issues with my Inbox of an IMAP based email account. My inbox is empty.
When I start mail my Inbox is empty after briefly appearing at the sgtart of the application.
I installed thunderbird to verify that my IMAP account was not the issue and I can clearly see, receive and send email.
I can also access that account via a webmail interface and everything seems fine.
The problem started occuring after getting some error messages from the server indicating that I had gobe over the allocated quota. I cleaned up the account but now mail does present me an empty inbox. Again the account info are valid, nothing has changed.
The interesting things is that my iphone & ipad that are using the same setup and my inbox is also empty there.
With mountain lion (clean install), I can see the emails arriving via the notification bar.
I am at a loss and would appreciate any help if somebody has encountered such a problem.
    Thanks
    Eric

  • Inbox in Mail showing (4294963841 messages) but inbox is empty

in OS X 10.5.7 while using Mail 3.6 (935/935.3) My inbox header shows:
    Inbox (4294963841 messages)
but my inbox is empty. This started occurring after upgrading to 10.5.7
    M
    XMLA

I'm having the same problem and have only noticed it since upgrading to 10.5.7. I've tried rebuilding the mailbox a few times, disabling the GrowlMail bundle, vacuuming Mail's SQLite database, and even tdeleting the account and starting over. (It's a Gmail account I connect to via IMAP.) And yet:
    Inbox (4294966402 messages)
And the inbox is empty. I sent it an email and I get this report:
    Inbox (4294967161 messages, 1 unread)
Not sure how one message counts as over 700, but there you go.
This is one of two Gmail accounts I check separately, and the other account is not behaving in this manner.
Mail also has some trouble quitting—I often have to force quit it. Not sure of those are related or not, but I have noticed it. Otherwise, this odd reporting of messages is benign, but bizarre.

I just upgraded to 10.9.5. I opened my Apple mail and my two gmail inboxes are empty. I logged on to Gmail my gmail accounts and all but a few email are gone. It looks like all my gmail mail has been deleted. Has anyone encountered this?

I will defer to you & your much greater knowledge of Mac OS X.
I will consider this a non issue.

  • E75 Sent Email Missing

The sent items folder has disappeared from my POP3 email account on my E75. Where will I find my lost emails?
This is not an Exchange account or a gmail/yahoo type account.

Hi there...I hope nobody will be mad for activating this old post.Thing is I have same issue. I understand why it happens but don't know how to deal with it.When ever I have mail on mine provider’s server, all mail boxes (sent, outbox, drafts) are visible on E75.If I download all e-mails from that inbox from the main server I empty it by automatically deleting messages from that inbox after they are received with main personal computer. So it is standard POP mail. What happens with E75 is that it will sync with inbox, it will se there are no messages in the inbox, and it will delete all received mails downloaded on the phone. That is something I don't understand how to change, and how can that be normal behavior? When E75 empties it’s own inbox (inbox folder on the phone) then all the folders like sent items, outbox etc are not visible and I can't reach them. Again when I receive email to inbox on the phone then I see all the folders again with all sent items and other mail folders. How to change behavior of the E75 to act like standard basic e-mail client like Outlook express that downloads messages to phone, but leaves copy on main server like it does now, and keep all downloaded messages in the phone until I delete them? Or how to get access to all mail folders (sent, outbox, drafts) when e75 e-mail inbox is empty?
     Thx for any help.
