Incessant fan operation since 10.5.6 update
Since applying the 10.5.6 update to my PowerBook G4, the cooling fan runs non-stop, sometimes at seemingly top speed.
Tried PRAM reset, no change. Ideas, please anyone.

Unfortunately, Powerbook fan control isn't that great. Most users experience what you're experiencing and it's hard to pin down what causes it. I would encourage you to download a small application called "G4 Fan Control". You can find it here: http://www.andreafabrizi.it/?g4fancontrol:download
This app allows you to set the threshold for when your fans kick on. It has worked pretty well for me. Try it out and let me know if it solves your problem.

please note that the words "utton ID" are exactly as the error message gives it; and at the end of the message there are exactly 19 hyphens.
I don't know why this faulty code is referencing things to do with "chrome"... the Chrome browser is not installed on this PC or anywhere on our network.
Also, this is not the first problem I had after clicking Firefox's prompt for the latest update. Before Firefox retreated into this error message, it was loading but running with some faults...
1. the bookmark symbol was not appearing on the right hand side of the URL line, so I had always to click on "bookmark this page", after which the bookmark symbol did appear; however I don't know if the bookmarking function worked properly.
2. the back and forward buttons were not highlighted, as if I had not come from a previous page; so once I clicked on a link to a new page I could not go back to where I came from because Fiefox thought I hadn't come from anywhere.
3. there may have been other errors, but I did not find them.
How do I reinstate my Firefox program to work properly please? do I have to download the latest version and reinstal? if so, do I have to remove the old version first? or is there a fix?
Even to write this message I have been forced to use (yuk -- I don't like to say this!!!) Internet Explorer. So please -- I need help urgently.

NOELSome how I solved my problem by opening a user account and downloading Firefox 4.0 beta and installing it, I did try it, worked fine, so I did close the user account and did go back to my own account(switched user), the main page that I had problem with Firefox which would not open, I dabble click on Firefox it start working again!! I hope that solves your problem too.

Startup problem since 5/07 security update
I've been having serious problems with startup since the last security update. Startup hangs at the first gray screen or the while screen with the Apple logo. Sometimes multiple restarts get me to the login screen. Safe mode gets me there as well, but the next time I log in the same problem occurs. I have cleaned caches, deleted extensions, deleted fonts, used several shareware programs to clean up my startup files.
Yesterday, when I booted up, a small camera appeared mid-screen with a face alternating with a question mark. The camera blinks back and forth for a long time. Once startup made it to the login screen, but I didn't want to login, since I didn't know what it was. Today I tried to login again. The camera is still there--no surprise--but this time startup is stalled at the gray screen and the fans starts up and runs with no progress.
Any ideas? My iMac has worked perfectly until I did the last security update. I am pretty careful about downloads or opening any unknown files, so I'd be surprised if I have a virus. Others in my family use the iMac, but they're pretty saavy about viruses.
I'm about to reinstall OSX, but want to see if anyone has run into this and found a way around.bwelch:

Begin troubleshooting with"
Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

Something has gone wrong with my version of pages since I did an update on 18th January. I get an error message
"You need a newer version of Pages to open this document"You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You have a problem when opening a file with the wrong version.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

There is, in fact, a reasonable consistency of reports indicating exactly that with the Mac mini. Though it has to be said that Becca's situation should not, either by range or apparent signal strength, be marginal - particularly not when previous tests have been conducted with the mini in close proximity to the base station.

The minis (and other wireless devices) I have in service in the network are variously connected via an Airport Extreme base station, an Airport Express and Belkin and Lexmark WAPs. In the course of doing this I've noted marginally better signal stability at the 55 foot range between a mini and the Airport Extreme base station, but no real difference in signal quality between any of them. -
ADSL connection disastrous since 10.4.11 update: Help!
I have two computers connecting to a 6500 kps rated broadband line. My PowerMac G5 Dual was fine with this until I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.11 and, incidentally Safari 3. Since then the measured connection speeds (using speedtest.net) have plunged to between 650kps and 3900 kps. Not only that, but Safari has become unstable; often stalling; often needing Resetting completely.
On the other hand, My MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Core Duo is fine with the same connection; rated speeds are between 6000 and 6500 kps.
Both computers are using an Airport wirelessly connected via a Netgear 834 router; security is WEP and I'm using Channel 6.
The MacBook Pro is running Tiger 10.4.10 (Safari 2.x) and I dare not upgrade it to 10.4.11 in view of the problems I'm having with 10.4.11.
Incidentally the problems have been worse since latest Java security updates.
Any suggestions?
I have removed all Safari's bookmarks; disabled plug-ins; deleted the .com preference file and done the usual permissions/ CRON routines.(using Cocktail)
My Power Mac also uses Opera and Firefox, both of which are showing drastically slow connection speeds as well as Safari.
I am reluctant to downgrade to 10.4.10 on the PowerMac as this requires an archive and install process and hours of work.I see you disabled plug-ins, that's good, as most broke with 10.4.11. Did you apply the 1.1 Security Update, Security update 1.0 caused some safari crashes, get the 1.1 update...

Can you start QuickTime on your computer?
You'll probably have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and use it to remove QuickTime Player and iTunes. Then download and install the iTunes again. -

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to: Open in 32 bit mode is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.

Ever since the 4.3 update, which I waited until end of January 2014 to download, My phone has been messed up. Some of the problems I solved on my own since Verizon and Samsung both refused to help me. I fixed the charging problem by using an HTC Incredible charger since Samsung's charger is garbage since the update. Battery drain is also a constant issue. Ram is ALWAYS full which should be a good thing but clearing it out completely and killing off all Google apps seems to make my phone all of a sudden fly and work super fast. As the day goes on I am unable to clear all of these unwanted items from being open and bogging down my phone. Most of the apps doing this are the preloaded ones you don't need. I am forced to restart my phone to get the memory cleared at least 2-4 times a day. Verizon tells me this is normal. Samsung hangs up on me when I call. Why do I have to restart this phone just to get it to work like it should after a few hours of being on? Does Verizon care about customers or just money?
@Verizon Wireless Customer Support. I have the 4.3 version that I got with the awful update. I waited until the end of January to download it and guess what was never fixed? Your update. Its been months and battery drain is not better at all. I have replaced with a new battery and it was the same problem. I have used safe mode numerous times and it does not do anything either other than annoy me some more. I have done a factory reset on my phone since the update I downloaded in January 47 times so far. It didn't do anything but erase everything and I had to start all over. Google apps are a major reason my phone is lagging. Once I force stop them the phone has incredible speed, when the Google apps are on, the phone lags. The internet browser is also super slow. 56k dial up has faster speeds than my mobile browser and I have full 4g lte bars. Its beyond annoying because when ever I call Verizon customer service I am told nothing is wrong. If I break the phone into a million pieces you would still tell me its working properly. This problem persists on a daily basis. I now restart my phone 4 to 6 times daily. I am starting to wonder why the quality of your company is getting worse and worse? You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours. If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for). You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content. -
Anyone else having issues with location services since the 7.1 update? Ever since I updated i’ve been seeing the location services icon on my status bar at all times. I noticed that google was the app that was using it a lot, but after I turned the feature off for google my phone started using the “traffic”, “frequent locations” and “cell network search”. When I turn the feature off for all of those things it’s no longer a problem. So just wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if anyone has a solution?
The "solution" is probably to increase your knowledge. You've done good things. Perhaps this article will educate you a bit more about location services.
Basically, they can be very useful, but can cause a lot of iPhone use. A major example is "Remind me to ... when I leave home."

Hello. Since my last firefox update, I have been unable to type an email - the box within which one would usually type does not appear when I press 'reply' to a received email, or press 'compose'. The email provider is '123-reg.co.uk. I have been using both firefox and the provider ['webfusion Ltd/webmail123] successfully for well over a year. The provider says it is a browser problem. I can still add an attachment to the email header, which successfully can be sent, but the recipient gets my standard email 'signature' with font messages and the attachment. Can anyone help? About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

My iPod Touch Gen 5 will no longer synch with iTunes on my computer. Only change since this happened is update to iPod to OS 8.1.1 iPod synch remains stuck in "Step 8 of 8"
On your computer go to the control panel (hover in the lower right corner) then programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Service, Apple Application Support then go to apple.com and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
You won't lose any content, you're not deleting that, just the programs that access them.
What is thought to happen is that sometimes a new version of itunes doesn't update the drivers in those other two programs. The only way to update the drivers is to force it by uninstalling the programs which allows itunes to write the correct ones.
My iPad and iPod did exactly the same thing and this is how I fixed it.
