Incoming mail: SMTP or POP?

Hi,
I'm quite new to OS X Server and I got the following question.
There's a mail server in the internet for (let's say) example.net that receives emails via SMTP. There are some Adresses configured at this server.
Now I'm running an OS X Server for that company (example.net) within a LAN, connected to the internet via DSL (changing IP-Adresses every 24h).
Now I want to receive the emails at this OS X Server additionally to the mail-server in the internet. I thought fetching the Mails via POP would be the best idea. After that the local server can sort the mails into the specific directories (users-accounts). In the "Server Admin" I cannot see any options that let me configure something like that.
I don't want to redirect the Mails via DNS directoly to my OS X Server because I don't want to be addicted to my slow and unreliable DSL-Line. Beyond that I'd need a port-forwarding into my (alleged) secure LAN.

Before you go much further, are you sure you want to do what you describe?
You're going to end up with two copies of each message - one on your upstream mail server, and one on your local LAN server.
Users are going to get confused as to which mail server they should connect to. If they flip between them they're going to download multiple copies of each message because the server isn't going to know that the user has already downloaded the message from the other server.
If you do want to do this, check with your upstream server to see if they support ETRN - it's designed just for this kind of thing, running a local mail server over a transient connection.
Remote mail servers will send their mail to your upstream. Your local mail server periodically connects to this mail server to download any pending messages.

The receiving email ports are:
IMAP is port 143
IMAP-SSL is port 993
POP is port 110
POP-SSL is port 995
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

Why cant i change my incoming mail server to pop instead of imap

Im trying to chaneg my incoming mail to pop instead of imap but it says "the imap server pop.(myemail) is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct nformation in the Incoming mail server field." My iphone is on pop so im not sure why the ipad isnt working. I just need to be able to get and keep incomin emails on my ipad, as it does on my phone.

I Have a macbook pro with OS X Yosemite. I want to change the incoming cox mail server from pop to imap. I did it on my ipad and iphone but I can't do it on the mac pro. Do I need to delete the existing account and do it as a new account or can I edit the server?

It depends on what Cox has set up. Usually, you need to create a new account using IMAP. You don't want to delete the POP accounts because all your old mail is stored on your computer. You'll want to import that using Mail's Import option.

Is Yahoo your Internet provider? Do you have a local provider? ei:AT&T, SBC, cable co, check who you make your check or epatment to...etc, If so I would start there, but if no joy go to the "Mothership"
I may be wrong about this, (it's been a long time now) I may have deleted my mail account from Mail (after writing down all the info from all General/accounts, and the rest of the tabs, and then added a new account using my existing email address, and it may have "walked me thru the rest of the proceedure".
But like I said it was a long time ago 3-4 years, but that may have been the path I ended up taking, make sure to write all the info down in case you need to re-enter it all manually. Then try calling them.

Do we need to enter full email address in Incoming mail server settings on POP Account

Do we need to enter full email address in Incoming mail server settings on POP Account or just the username? For example does it have to be [email protected] or only jim.nicholas works? How does it affect the way the emails are delivered between laptop (primary device) and ipad ???

For my POP account I have my full email address in the Address field but just my name (and not the '@...') in the User Name under Incoming Mail Server

HT2480 In the server domain; Do I use the smtp server OR the incoming mail server?

I am trying to verify my business mail on my iphone and I have several troubles thus I would like to ask for you help:
1) its a "webmail.ath.hcmr.gr" mail, so it is a "Microsoft Exchange" mail type? Correct?
2) in the server field: what do i add? The incoming mail server or the smtp server?

Why POP Mail Account on Iphone not synching for incoming mails

I just setup my iphone mail account as a POP client to synch up with my corporate Outlook Mail.
For the outgoing mail server I used cwmx.com and for incoming I used the hostname provided by IT support person , with username and password as I would use on my outlook client.
No SSL used in our case.
The setting went fine as I did not see any errors,
but when I try to synch for new mails, it says checking and than says updated, but I don't see any mails coming in.
The send mail works fine from this account.
Can anyone help.

I think what you mean is that you cannot have an email POP account on a laptop and on iphone look for the same messages on the incoming server.
I mean exactly what I provided. A POP account is designed to be accessed with a single email client only. When a POP account is accessed with more than email client, the setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded needs to be off with both email clients used to access the account.
And if accessed with more than one email client, you cannot have both email clients actively accessing the incoming mail server for new messages at or near the same time. If one email client checks the incoming mail server for new messages followed by another email client doing the same at or near the same time, the incoming mail server will lock the account's Inbox mailbox preventing the 2nd email client from accessing the account's Inbox mailbox and downloading new messages if any are available. This is a temporary lock and is due to a POP account being designed to be accessed with a single email client only.
The same does not apply to an IMAP account which is designed to be accessed with more than one email client with multiple email clients being able to access server stored mailboxes at the same time.

Changing POP-server for incoming mail Yosemite

I just installed Yosemite. Now I got an e-mail from my mail provider that I needed to change the pop server for that account. When I go via mail/perferences/accounts to my settings, I can edit all the fields except the field "incoming mail server" that is grayed out. How to change that?

Smtp relay for incoming mails

Hi,
I want to relay mails from smtp A to smtp B.
Smtp A is register in the dns as smtpAdressA MX record so when users mail to adress1@smtpAdressA the mail is being recieve at smtp A but how do i relay it to smtp B ?
I added adomain in smtp A with the ip adress of smtp B and configure it to relay all incoming mails but still it wont relay to smtp B.

TS4002 In my SMTP server settings, the incoming mail server window is dim and inactive, is this why I'm not receiving mail? What can I do to fix?

I experienced same problem tonight and called Verizon technical support and they walked me through the settings on iPad. Took about 5 minutes. Basically it involved changing incoming.verizon.net to pop.verizon.net and changing outgoing.verizon.net to smtp.verizon.net. But it's worth the call to ensure other settings are OK. Evidently, change at Verizon was effective today!
