Incoming mail sound not working

I have the "new messages sound" turned on in Preferences of Mail on my iMac, but it doesn't seem to work consistently or sometimes at all. I have Yosemite 10.10.2
Any tips??
Thx

Make sure that the slider is set at middle.
Uncheck and recheck the box beside "Play user interface sound effects".

  • Incoming mail server not working

Suddenly and for no reason, my Mac mail isn't working on my desktop.  Still works on my ipad and iphone though.  I see in account preferences that there is no "incoming mail server" written in the space but it won't let me write one in.

If you are using a G3 running 10.2.x as your profile indicates please re-post in the PPC based iMac's forums. This forum is for Intel based iMacs, the earliest Intel based iMacs shipped with Tiger 10.4.x

    Sorry for the delay...
I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.
    Thanks for the help, anyway!!

If you haven't already I would open Mail>go to Preferences>General> and there confirm that the "Play sounds for other mail actions" box is checked:

  • Setting incoming mail sounds

    Good morning.
I have 3 email accounts set up via my mac mail. I wanted to assign a different sound to each to alert me when mail arrives.
I quickly realized the general settings in preferences for incoming mail sound is a global setting, not adjustable per account. So I created three rules: when to matches *this email address* play *this sound*.
That seems to work EXCEPT that the general setting *New Mail Sound* also occurs. If I set New Mail Sound to None in the General settings, all new mail sound is shut off--including the specific sounds I set in Rules.
Anyone know how to turn off the global new mail sound yet still hear the specific new mail sounds per different email accts?
    Thanks for your help.

Open Mail preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar, click on the Advanced tab, uncheck the box labeled IDLE and see if that fixes things.

  • INCOMING MAIL SOUNDS DELAYED 2-3 MINUTES

I am not receiving an INSTANTANEOUS incoming mail sound alert as I have the entire time I've owned the computer. Instead, it sound alerts me 2-3 minutes after the mail is laying in the box. I NEED the instantaneous alert for my competitive business. I was 10.4.11, then performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard.
BTW, I first upgraded to Snow Leopard and had a variety of glitches. Then, I started from scratch installing a clean install. Snow Leopard is fantastic.
HOWEVER - I need to fix this one glitch. Any ideas?

Same here... but with a twist.
Very weird. I have Mail.app set to play "new mail sound" as well as other mail-even sounds.
I have some rules that route some mail to another folder (mail box). When mail comes for those, I get the sound. But for mail that stays in the inbox, no sound. The in-box is an IMAP box while the others are "local." I used to get the sound on Tiger on my old Mini.
When mail comes into in-box it is "bold" (no-read) which is correct.
I have "dock count" set for in-box only. Works fine.
I get the "woosh" when sending mail.
I've tried setting mail preferences for "play sounds" to other sounds. Same thing.
I've tried it with the mail.app showing and with it hidden. Same thing.
I've tried closing and opening mail. I've tried re-booting. Still no sound for "in-box" mail that is not "routed" to another mail box.
This is a brand new iMac with SL. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on. Maybe there is a setting I missed somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Outgoing mail is not working on the Macbook Pro

    Hey
I am using the mail client to read my gmail mails in my Macbook Pro. Incoming and outgoing emails were working fine and all of a sudden for the last 2 days my outgoing mails are not working and i get this error" the sender address blah blah.com was rejected by the server".
I reentered my cred in the pref pane and it still does not work. I am able to send mails fine using the browser. Incoming mails is fine is fine on the client.
Any idea what is causing this error?
    Thanks

I'm not sure why this worked fine for a period of time but most, if not all ISPs use for connecting to the internet block the use of SMTP servers outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25. Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only that is outside of their network on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
    Something to try.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for the account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this doesn't work, you need to add your ISP's SMTP server to mail and select this SMTP server to send mail with your gmail account which is invisible to all recipients.

  • Maverick's Mail does not work with Gmail ! it works better with iOS 7

    For info.
I do know how it's complex to program and more for an OS System.
Maverick's Mail DOES NOT work proprely with Gmail boxes ? Gmail incoming or outcoming messages are correctly notified on my iPhone 5s with iOS 7. But not on my Macbook Pro retina (end 2012) with Mavericks. One update was suppose to solve the trouble.
Hope you'll solve the problem as soon as possible. Bur not during the nights. But during your daytimes' work !
Wish you nice end of year's days.
And please get my best wishes for 2014. Hope you'll get a lot of these nice little moments of happiness.
    Best regards.

Have you checked your incoming and outgoing mail server settings?
If you are using IMAP, it should look something like the following:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
    imap.gmail.com
    Port: 993
    Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
    smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 465 or 587
    Requires SSL: Yes
    Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server
If you are using POP3, it should look something like the following:
    Incoming mail server type: POP3
Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: pop.gmail.com. Google Apps users, enter the server name provided, don't add your domain name in these steps.
              Port: 995
Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.gmail.com
         Port: 465
    Outgoing server requires authentication: enabled

  • No incoming mail sound

10.5.6 always had an incoming mail sound, and since updating to 10.5.7 no sound. The preferences still show the sound. What gives?

    Bruce,
Not sure about Mail Badger, but even in 10.5.6, the use of IDLE, at least with MobileMe, was known to inhibit the New Mail Alert -- this allows push mail, but impacts the sound.

  • Apple Mail will not work without webmail login

Spontaneously 2 weeks ago I got a triangle next to my Apple Mail Inbox and could neither send nor receive email. I have used ATT for DSL and my email address for over two years without this problem. I have checked all my settings with ATT and they claim they have even "rebuilt" my mailbox and all is good. But unless I use a browser to log into webmail first, Mail will not work. The user name/password/port info is all correct, but Mail cannot connect. Even when the "keep me logged in" box is checked when I log in to webmail, Mail will stop working if I close out the browser and put the computer to sleep. This is driving me crazy.

I've had what sounds very similar issue with another DSL ISP: Qwest.
Ran both Comcast & Qwest simultaneously (alternately, not really concurrently)
for awhile & got sporadic blips & failures to connect.
I never could establish conclusively whether it was the ISP, or a local client problem.
I think its the ISP. Had other email annoyances with them that never quite got resolved
Sometimes my mail was left on the webmail server & never got delivered & would do so, same as you describe.
Its never anyone's fault, or problem...
I doubt they'd tell you if it was an issue on their end, if it not resolved.

  • Cannot turn off incoming mail sounds

I am running 10.8.1 on a new retina macbook.
I have tried every preference panel I can find and nothing seems to be able to turn off the incoming mail sound.
I am getting what I think is the "Basso" sound whenever a new mail message comes in.
I went to Mail Preferences and picked New Messages Sound>None.
Then I unchecked Play sounds for other mail actions
Still get the basso sound when new mail comes in.
I even rebooted to see if that would fix it.  No luck.
Then I went and tried to change the sound to something else.  That didn't work either.  Stuck on basso!
Even checked Notifications Center and the Sound Preferences Panel.  No luck there either.
I don't want to turn off sound entirely, just stop incoming mail sounds.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
    thanks

Hi Mikibee...  Try this:  Mail / Preferences setting, from this window you will see (new message sound), set it to " none". Let me know if it worked for you.
                                                                                              Thanks.

  • Is the another way to mute incoming mail sound?

My new iPad Air has an annoying issue that I can't seem to solve.
I'm not a new user, this is my 3rd iPad.
What happens is that I have put the incoming mail sound to none in the settings. But still the incoming mail sound can be heard.
If I mute the Ring and Alerts sound, it stops. But that is annoying because now I can't hear my alarm or my keyboard clicks or applications within apps, like for instance a video on Facebook or Google+ doesn't have sound either and neither do some games? But if I un-mute it there is the annoying mail sound again.
I want to use my alarm but it's hard to sleep with a incoming mail sound going the whole night.
My slide button on the side is set to lock rotation and the bell is muted in the control panel.
I tried switching those but that doesn't make a difference.
    I have 2 mail accounts, a me.com and a gmail account.
I tried removing the gmail account, thought that might be the problem but it isn't.
I rebooted but the issue us still there.
Any of you have an idea what is causing my mail sound?
    Thanks,
    Christine

    Settings>Notification Center>Mail>your mail account>Alert Sound>None

  • Mail Sounds Stop Working

My mail sounds all work fine after a restart, but then stop working after some period of time. All my sound settings are correct, and volume is turned up. I hear all other system sounds and sound on other apps.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
