Incomming internet connections

Hi,
I'm trying to test something at work using my N78 where by I'm using PC suite to connect a laptop to the internet via my phone. However, I'm testing a piece of software where I need to have incoming access (kind of like a web-server). My question is, is this possible or are only outgoing connections possible. I have found the laptops externally accessible IP address but I can't seem to 'ping' it.
Any ideas?
Neil.

Your mobile network provider usually shields you via a proxy.
The public IP address you found is that of your provider's proxy while the IP address of the phone itself is probably somehwere in RFC1918-space. When I connect I end up somewhere in 10.0.0.0/8.
Bearing this in mind, inbound IP connections are not possible over your provider's packet service, only outbound.
The inability to ping the IP address is most likely because many networks have their public-facing machines set to ignore ICMP echo_request messages.

  • ITunes - Incoming network connections error message

    Hello,
I am hoping some one can help me?
I have a Mac and I keep get an error message appear when I open my ITunes.
The error message reads " Do you want the application iTunes to accept incoming network connections".
I have changed the security settings to accept incoming network connections but the error message keeps coming up.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks
    Gavin

My father has a perfectly good working 17 inch MacBook Pro, running on 10.4.8 which is the most modern version it's allowed to run, plus running iTunes 9.x and have the same problem. It does get tiring clicking each time, it does get annoying not being able to use airplay because it blames the firewall, and It gets annoying entering the administrate access and password each time.
When he selects the AirPort Express in question, that used to throw up the "not set in your firewall to allow AirPlay".
Clicking the firewall preferences button is useless, as it's already been given permission to allow incoming Internet connection, and clicking ignore makes it either crash , stop working or be inactive.
Turning firewall off to allow all connections defeats the point of having a firewall, but used to work most of the time, but doesn't seem to work now.
This coincides with him suddenly not being able to browse the Internet streams through the old iTunes radio button, but the ones that he did safe to his personal playlists play fine and he can enter custom stream URLs fine. So something on apples side must be stopping the use of the old radio button that allows you to browse through various genres of Internet music streams.
For the record there has been no iTunes or operating system updates for 10.4.8 for a couple of years now at the very least. So that is where our situation lies. A solution other than iTunes which no longer allows browsing.

  • Can I use an Airport as a wireless modem, and will it improve a slow internet connection (from the source)

Living on a acerage outside of the city, we have a weak internet signal. It takes days to download a movie from iTunes. Will using the new Airport actually improve our internet, or are we limited to the poor incoming internet connection?
I'm not very skilled in network stuff, so apologies if this question is really stupid.
    Thanks

There is no modem in the Airport router. You cannot use it alone. You must have a modem and the speed will be set by the type of broadband, and factors like distance.
Ring your ISP and ask if there is any way to get a faster connection.
Often 3G/4G wireless will be faster than adsl but will cost many times more.

  • When will iPhone support PPPoE internet connections?

When will iPhone support PPPoE internet connections? Numerous Internet providers still use PPPoE internet over DHCP data. However, iphone does not support PPPoE.

PPPoE is irrelevant to the iPhone; it is a protocol between the ISP and the first point of presence on premises, which today is almost always a wired or wireless router. PPPoE would only be meaningful if there was a way to connect the phone directly to the incoming Internet connection. As there is no way to do this physically it would be pointless.

  • Internet Connection drops when incoming telephone ...

On 14th December 2011 during a period of very high winds and heavy rain an incoming telephone call caused the internet connection to drop and it eventually restored itself after about 2 hours. When I answer a call the internet connection drops after about 30 seconds and then reconnects after about a further 40 seconds. All incoming local calls cause the internet connection to drop. As far as I can tell incoming calls from other exchanges seem to be OK. Incoming calls from mobile phones sometimes cause the internet connection to drop. The line is unaffected by outgoing telephone calls. I have a BT HomeHub 2B plugged into an upstairs telephone socket and connected by ethernet to my PC. I have another telephone socket downstairs, each socket is fitted with a filter. I have have tried every combination of my two standard telephones and 4 filters in each socket and every local call causes the internet connection to drop and reconnect. I think it very unlikely that both phones and 4 filters have become faulty at the exactly the same time. I have connected the Home Hub and telephone with a filter to the test socket and asked a friend on the local exchange to call me and the internet connection dropped and reconnected as before. Since moving to this house 2 years ago I have had four previous interruptions to the broadband service all of which were caused by problems probably at the exchange. The last one took 8 days to correct after countless calls to the "Help Line". Their fall back position is always to assume that there is no problem with the BT line. So I am not even going to try to explain this over the telephone. This is the information on the BT Home Hub Event Log, it is typical for every occurrence of the problem. Dec 26 11:42:42 2011 ERR 2011-12-26T11:42:42Z cwmp: mt_cwmp: session error: Could not resolve host Dec 26 11:43:19 2011 (1035438.010000) RTNL: Received ERROR reply 'No such process' for message type 0x19 Is this a problem with the Homehub, the line, or at the exchange?

not sure I read your post correctly but are you saying if someone from another exchange phones then the broadband is ok and it only drops if someone from your own exchange phones?
if the possible sollution from chris6273 does not work, and you have already tried the test socket then I would contact the mods for assistance  http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
the mods can take up to 3 days to reply

  • Internet connection drops with new HH4....

I recently signed up to a new deal with BT and had to pay for my HH4. I have it all connected up the exact same way as my HH3. I am receiving a faster connection now but am now getting VERY frequent internet connection drops....
My PC is wired to the HH so NOT a wireless issue. I have checked ALL my microfilters and seem to be working. Nothing within my home has changed apart from the homehub. I used to be connectiong at around 6.5Mb, I am now connecting between 7.5 and 8Mb....
9 times out of 10 the connection drops when I receive an incoming call.... but not always. I can make outgoing calls with ZERO issues....

BT engineer was out to fix the line in February of this year. A new main box was fitted (which I was billed for) and he also fitted an iplate to the box to allow the hub to be connected without the need for a filter since they are built in.......
an Iplate will not do away with any filters and they will be required on all sockets - unless you mean a filtered faceplate not iplate - 2 sockets 1 adls and 1 phone

  • Problems sharing internet connection through Airport with a PS3

Does anybody know how to share an internet connection wirelessly with a PS3? I've tried everything including following directions from the tech support people from both Sony and my ISP (Verizon) and nothing works. Last time I've talked to Verizon I've obtained a IP number from them as Sony recommended and that did not work either. Is anybody out there with a PS3 sharing the internet connection through Airport successfully? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.!!

    Let's double-check your Mac's Internet Sharing settings ...
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Setup the Network
    Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] Mac > (wireless) > PS3
    Enable Software Firewall
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options...
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    o Password: (optional)
    o Confirm Password: (optional)
    o WEP Key Length: (optional)
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start

  • Outlook 2007 not working, internet connection is fine

I installed an airport extreme yesterday and my internet connection is up and running on all PC's and an IMac. However, I can't seem to get my Outlook 2007 connected to my ISP. All my ISP incoming and outgoing server names are correct. Should I change the advanced settings for server port numbers? They are 110 (incoming) and 25 (outgoing)?
As you all know, being w/o email is a bxxxh.

    Lyle,
Ok, so we know the issue is not related to the base station, but the email account.
I know it sounds silly, but make sure you are on YOUR wireless network (click Airport icon in menu bar and make sure your network name is selected). If you are on another network, RoadRunner may block you from using their SMTP (outgoing) mail server.
Once you're sure on your network, re-create the account with settings you get from your ISP. Find out if the 'username' they want for the incoming server is your full email address or just the part before the @ symbol (e.g. bobsmith or [email protected]), whether they use SSL encryption and odd port numbers. Ports 110 and 25 are common settings for POP & SMTP servers, respectively.

  • WRV54G suddenly losing internet connection

I've had this router running for 2 years with little or no problems.  About 2 weeks ago I started to lose the internet connection on this router.  If I open up a browser session (IE or Firefox) it comes back with an error page.  I can not open up the linksys admin page either (however I can ping it).  I have other applications that send date out to the internet and they are also failing.
Here is the odd part:  I can access my network using Dameware (similar to pcanywhere), slingbox, http (incoming traffic), etc.  My devices on the network (tivos, media players, etc) see each other without issue.  At this very moment I am accessing my network remotely but I can't open a session on the router on the remote pc.  I have static IP's set and I have never dabbled into the vpn area of the router as I did not have a need.
Any ideas?  I was hoping that the latest firmware would solve the problem but it did not (2 reboots since I have upgraded).  The only thing that fixes the problem is to reboot the router and then run a "repair" on my network connections.  The problem is not specific to one pc on the network... I've verified that all 4 of my boxes (windows xp pc's) have the same issue at the same time.
I did read in one post for an WRT54G that an XBOX seemed to be a common link... I do not have one on my network.

Thanks, I know that I reset it but I don't know that it was quite that long.  I'll give it a look when I get home.  Should I reload the firmware or just power down the router?

  • 3rd gen atv drop wifi Internet connection?

Why does my new 3rd gen atv drop wifi Internet connection? 2nd gen in bedroom works fine

    Hi Gvegastiger,
The problem might be just with your iMac, so I will suggest you to check your firewall on your iMac, and if it is on make sure you are allowing incoming traffic in the area you need to work with...
Second I would check the Proxy settings on your iMac as well under Network profile. Also for troubleshooting purposes leave the IP address DHCP if you have it set static. And Under Network/Ethernet make sure you have it set "Automatically"
Third make sure you use ether Wireless or just Wired connection, not both. I don't know your network layout but if you have to separate networks that will be a problem when you have both of them enabled on separate networks.
Let me know if this helps,
    Goran

  • Internet connection and firewall

I have seen several other posts on what appears to be my problem, but I have not seen an answer, so my apologies for trying again. I had service done on my MBP recently and they altered the network settings at the Apple store. When I got home, I set them back to where they had been, but I have had a recurring problem ever since - if I have shut down or been disconnected for awhile, my computer refuses to connect to the internet.
I normally keep the firewall set to "Set access for specific services...". To make an internet connection, I have to go to the firewall and select "All all incoming connections". Once the connection has been made, I can change my firewall back to its normal settings with no issues. I no nothing of the inner workings of the Mac OS, but does the initial connection require that some utility program be run with the firewall turned off in order for the connection to be established? If so, could it be added to the firewall's allowed application list to prevent this back and forth with the firewall settings?

I had service done on my MBP recently and they altered the network settings at the Apple store...
If you had services done which you had to pay or are covered by the APP at the Apple store, you should have received a receipt at the time you got your mac back. If you are not happy with the service... look at the bottom of the page, it says how many days you have to make a claim (either 30 or 90 days).
You can take your mac and your receipt back to the Apple store and have them fix your problem for free as long as the problem you have now is derived from the old problem...
As for OS X apps that need internet access, that would be the clock time servers, any dashboard apps...mmm... Do you have MSN or any other programs which may need instant internet access?
(I am guessing here... since it is hard to tell since it depends what you have in your setup...)

  • How do I log off my DSL/Firefox Internet connection when it is not in use?

With my old dialup/Firefox Internet connection, I could return to the provider's home screen and click on a button to log off. I do not want to be connected to the Internet 24/7, but want to log off when I am not using the service. The provider says I should unplug the incoming cable, but if I do it this way several times a day, it won't be long before I need a new cable. Please tell me that there is a better way.

  • TM Backup to TC, Internet Connectivity breaks during backup,

Prior to the Snow Leopard Time Machine would backup, wirelessly to my Time Capsule without issue.
Since Snow Leopard, many times when Time Machine is backing up, I lose Internet Connectivity. If I stop the TM backup, I immediately regain connectivity. I connect to the TC wirelessly and it is my ONLY access point. I have a different Internet Router, the TC is just a bridge.
I do not lose the Airport connection, the Time Machine backup will finish to success. It seems to mostly happen when TM starts after waking from sleep. If I manually start a TM backup, the problem does not occur. Again, this presented after upgrading to SL.
My Wife's MBP which is still on Leopard, backs up to the TC without issues (no internet connectivity loss).
I did not think to ping other devices on my network during the occurrence of this anomaly. Next time it happens... I will try to ping other devices to see if I have any visibility past the TC (access point). I will report back the results.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
