Incomplete backup Timemachine

All important files are not being backed up:
System
Library
Applications
Any suggestions?

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • HT203756 How can I remove 'old' or 'incomplete' backups from iCloud?

How can I remove 'old' or 'incomplete' backups from iCloud?
When I attempted, the iPhone 6+ message asked if I wanted to remove ALL of the backups... without giving me the option of selecting the specific one I wanted to remove.
I had performed 'backups' of my old iPhone, but, when I tried to RESTORE to the REPLACEMENT iPhone, at least one of the iCloud backups shows 'incomplete'.  There was no 'error' on the original iPhone...when it 'failed' to complete the backup.
Now, I would like to 'clear up' the 'storage' on the iCloud, but am unable to select specific ones. I can either keep all instances or shut off iCloud Backup which would, according to the message, remove/delete ALL of the BACKUPS.
    This shouldn't be this difficult.....

I too wondered how you remove apps from iCloud.  Judging by the quantity of questions, comments, suggestions and replies (some rather rude) there is a clear need for Apple to make their literature a lot clearer.  The page describing what iCloud backs up refers to "app data" as an item which is backed up.  To the uniniated this might mean the app program but it seems not.  The app is "bought" via iTunes or the App Store and details of your purchase (free or otherwise) is held there separately on the server.
It would be nice however to be able to remove the reference to junk I have downloaded and decided I don't want so that it doesn't appear on the purchased apps listing!  Apple please note this.
It must be remembered that Apple products come pitifully supported by manuals "out of the box" on the assumption that it is so easy to use the product that no explanation is needed.  They forget that most buyers of Apple products (me included) don't know (and don't want to know) how they work, so when something is not obvious they are required to plough through Lord knows how many web pages of "knowledge base" material until they find an answer.
All I can add is that it is worth spending time reading the multiitude of discussion threads before asking the question yet again...

  • How to restore from an incomplete backup

    Hi,
I have an emergency situation. I had an iPhone 4S that I hadn't backed up in over a year on iTunes. I also never upgraded to any of the new iOS version so I guess it still had the version before the maps app was changed so I guess iOS 5? Anyways I was backing it up and my daughter either cancelled the backup or something went wrong and it never fully backed up. I never got to backing it up again and then a couple of days later my daughter dropped the phone in water and the phone got water damage. I then went and bought a 5S and tries to restore from iCloud. The backup is on the cloud but is listed as incomplete but is taking up over 8GB of space on the cloud so I am assuming something must have gotten backed up. It will not let me restore from that backup. What can I do to solve this problem. I have about 3 years of pictures on it that phone that I need to get back. To make matters even worse the computer that I had backed my phone up on over a year ago just crashed a couple of weeks ago so I don't even have access to that backup. I spoke to one of the genius at apple store and they have no idea what to do. Is there anyway to resolve this issue via apple or via some other third party application or software or company that I could pay who could fix this. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I don't think that you can restore your device from an incomplete backup. However I searched a little bit and found the following post. I hope it will help you further:
If you have an incomplete backup on iCloud.  The best way to push that over is to set-up your phone as a new phone, then during the activation (select language, select location services, that part) select to restore from iCloud backup.  That was the apple tech's advise, but unfortunately that didn't help in my case.
Another option is to get the iPhone Backup Extractor from Cnet and it will allow you to see what's backed up in your backup directrory (the path is: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\MobileSync\Backup\)
The free versions has limitations when extracting, but I only used it to see what's there.  Once I saw that there were only 250 pics backed up, I knew that my 500 pics were gone.
Finally there is an expensive solution via DriveSavers.com.  Apple has worked with them for years.  Every time you erase something on your devise, it's still there, it just gets assigned a value telling your operating system that the data can be written over what you (thought you) erased .  So those guys got the expertise to get you your data, but it's not cheap, with prices ranging from 400 - 1700.

  • Is there a way to access files from an incomplete backup

I returned the phone without realizing my backup was incomplete. Is there anyway to access the files from the incomplete backup? It shows 3.7 gigabytes were backed up.

    Thanks.
I'm not sure if they recover optical media either. Will have to look more carefully at their site.
But the fact that there are many PC optical media recovery programs that feature optical media recovery leads me to doubt that Data Rescue can do it.
But like I say, I will look more carefully at their page and perhaps send them an e-mail to be sure.
Appreciate the answer. It was helpful.

  • I have problem with my icloud backup, it's give me incomplete backup every time

I have problem with icloud Backup, it's give me every time incomplete Backup.
What I shall do to solve the problem.

I have problem with my Bluetooth too. I have iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1.1 and use some headsets from Plantronics, Jabra, Blade and have every time the same problem with any of them. The pairing procedure is going always very well, but when I switch off any of the headsets for longer tome, for example more than 1 hour and then switch on the headset again, the headset cannot be connected to the iPhone automatically, nevertheless that the Bluetooth is on in searching mode. Very occasionally I found out the following procedure which works:
Settings>General>Bluetooth Off>Bluetooth On> Tap on the device name to connect
    and the connection is established.
It is very bore to do this every time when I sit in my car and as usual I am in a hurry. I tried different thinks like to delete the device and pair it again or to reboot deeply the iPhone but nothing helps. Has anyone solution for this problem?

  • Incomplete backup.. HELP!

Yesterday I updated the IO for my iphone and during the backup by accident my iphone was unplugged. I now have a backup file that is incomplete. I just REALLY want to recover the camera roll pictures (if I get everyting else it would be better.) Is there a way that I can recover the files that I do have in the incomplete backup? It does not matter if the pics go back to the iphone I just need them.
    PLEASE HELP!

You can use an older backup file.
In iTunes go to Edit. Preferences. And click on Devices, and use an older back up.  Then I'd upload all of your camera roll to your computer or another website and restore the phone again.

  • Time Machine incomplete backup on new External Hard Drive

I have a LaCie 2TB firewire external hard drive I bought 2 years ago. I made 3 partitions, one called "Time Machine" for TM backups of my iMac HD, one called "Video" for video files, and one called "HD2" that I used to install new programs and store edited photos and img files. I ran TM onto this HD for the last 2 yrs with no problems. I recently decided that I needed to have a backup of my iMac HD --- AND the 2 partitions (Video and HD2) on my LaCie. So I bought a Seagate 2TB external USB HD that I planned to use ONLY for Time Machine.
So I hooked it up and formatted it (no partitions), then went to TM options and selected the new Seagate Hard Drive to backup to, and in the options I excluded the Seagate (by default) and the Time Machine partition on my LaCie. Nothing else was excluded. In other words, I wanted to backup my entire iMac HD, and my Lacie Video and HD2 partitions.
My internal iMac HD has 116 GB used, my Lacie Video partition has 355 GB used, and my Lacie HD2 partition has 175 GB used. So I was expecting the Seagate to backup 646 GB.
When my Time Machine backup started at 1 AM, I was happy to see that the status box showed "Backing up 1 GB of 646 GB." When I woke up at 8 AM, I was happy to see that the status box showed
"Backing up 536 GB of 646 GB."
But it stayed stuck on 536 GB until 12 Noon, then started slowly working again. By 7 PM, the status showed "Backing up 623 GB of 646 GB." Then at 8 PM, the status box disappeared and it seemed like everything was backed up. But my Seagate HD shows only 629 GB of used space. So I decided to check the backup in Finder to see what went wrong.
In the Seagate backups folder, I have three folders - one named "Macintosh HD" which shows 112 GB on disk, one named "Video" with 341 GB on disk, and one named "HD2" with 175 GB on disk.
So it appears that my iMac HD was only backed up 112 GB out of 116GB, my Video partition was only backed up 341 GB out of 355 GB, but my HD2 partition backed up the entire 175 GB out of 175 GB.
So my question is - is this normal, or is my backup really missing 4 GB of files from my iMac hard drive and 14 GB of files from my video partition? I started to look at them file by file to see if they matched, but there are so many files, so I thought I would ask in case any of you might have heard of this before. If your answer is that my backups are corrupt or incomplete, should I reformat the Seagate and start over?
Also, is it safe for me to manually delete all the files in my time Machine partition on my LaCie hard drive, since I won't be using that anymore for Time Machine backups? Or is there a process I must follow to delete those older backups?
Thanks for reading this far and for any advice you can shoot my way.

Thank you for your well thought out response. It was really helpful by showing me where to look at things more closely.
Time Machine automatically excludes some things that aren't necessary for a restore, such as system work files, most caches and logs, and trash.
This is good to know. Although I didn't have anything in the trash, I have no idea how much is in the various caches and logs. I'd be surprised if they totaled 4GB, though. I'm still worried about this backup, as explained below after doing a Console log check.
If any files were open, they may not have been backed-up (a partial file wouldn't be of much use). I don't know of any special exclusions for video files or apps, but there may be some. You might want to try the Terminal command in the yellow box of #11.
I didn't have anything else running except TM, so no files were open. I checked the exclusions in the yellow box #11, the Terminal Command, and /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd.bundle/Contents/Resources/StdExclusions.pl ist, but nothing seemed to point to the video files I have saved. So I'm still at a loss with this part of the backup.
You might want to look at the log of that backup
I looked at the log - thank you for the link on how to see it - but the entries show that the size of the backup was even less than I thought - It seems I am actually missing 0.2 GB from the HD2 partition, 6 GB from the iMac HD, and 14.4 GB from the Video partition. And since it shows the exclusion amounts, I'm really at a loss for the iMac HD now. Here's what the Console listed for this backup:
Aug 29 00:55:54 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Backup content size: 174.7 GB excluded items size: 0 bytes for volume HD2
Aug 29 00:55:54 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Backup content size: 355.7 GB excluded items size: 0 bytes for volume Video
Aug 29 00:55:54 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Backup content size: 116.3 GB excluded items size: 30.5 MB for volume Macintosh HD
    Aug 29 00:55:54 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: No pre-backup thinning needed: 776.02 GB requested (including padding), 1.82 TB available
    Aug 29 00:55:54 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Waiting for index to be ready (909 > 0)
    Aug 29 02:37:30 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Copied 3275 files (174.5 GB) from volume HD2.
    Aug 29 05:49:40 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Copied 5412 files (515.9 GB) from volume Video.
    Aug 29 19:18:46 paul-imac-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[567]: Copied 146976 files (626.2 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
Is it possible to see how many files are in each drive that I was backing up? If I could match the file count, it might give me a better idea. I used Finder, but it only gives me the GB Capacity, Used and Free. For example, if I could see if the LaCie Video partition has exactly 5412 files (or 2137, if the file count above is a running total), I will believe that all the files backed up but may have been truncated. If the partition shows more than 5412 files, then I'll know that not all files were backed up. So at least I can start looking manually.
It will be much faster and easier to erase the partition with Disk Utility.
Thank you for this advice. This should save lots of time. I won't erase my other partitions when I do this, right? Also, will it leave a blank partition there so I regain my space?
I'm really bummed out by this backup. I haven't used my iMac for anything except Safari since this happened, because I do not want to start working again until I know that I have a safe backup, and I don't want to make any new files until I can resolve this. I thought of just reformatting the Seagate and starting over, but I have a feeling it may do the same thing. So at this point, I don't know if the Seagate is faulty, if the TM is not working properly, if I am making a dumb user error, or if this is perfectly normal. The worst thing that could happen is that my iMac HD or Lacie HD fails and I try to restore from my Seagate TM backup, only to find out that my TM backup is incomplete or corrupt.
So I really do appreciate your help and any additional insight you or anyone else might have. Thanks.

  • Can a retrieve my picts from an incomplete backup on my icloud?

i made a backup and apperently it showed it was done so i reseted my phone and tried to restore the data from icloud and it says theres no backup but i went to icloud control panel and it shows the backup incomplete and it used 4.1 gb but it says incomplete. how can a recover my picts???? help!!!!!

    For future reference...
    IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream - and then moved into permanent albums for storage.  If using Photo stream, but sure to move the received photos to a permanent album.  If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as you have discovered.  I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".

  • IPhoto backup TimeMachine - all libraries?

I am planning on moving my iPhoto libraries to an external drive. In fact, I have a copy of the largest one there, now.
At the moment I have several libraries because I was trying to cut down the size of the default iPhoto  library which was getting huge. Back to huge again and too much trouble swapping various libraries depending on the subject.
Will Timemachine look at all libraries when it backs up iPhoto even if some are on an external drive?
    Thank you

    Larry,
Actually, I wanted to exclude the iPhoto libraries from TimeMachine because my photos are taking up too much room on the 3TB TimeMachine drive.
That is another reason why I do the exports, it's another way of backing up my photos. Glad to hear iPhoto will support up to 1 million photos.  I'm at 114,000 in that one huge library alone  :-)
The original game plan has been:
    Download all photos into iPhoto.
Export to 1TB drive where I keep my photos
Backup 1TB to a 2TB that has just photos and movies (now)  - using ChronoSync
Also, iPhoto is being backed up with TimeMachine
The new game plan was to
Use the 4TB for media [photos, movies, tunes] which would mean using this drive for default iPhoto library
Export photos to 1TB as usual ---hmmm might run out of room.
Backup 1TB to 2TB as usual
Which now leaves me with only the two copies of photos in addition to what's in iPhoto.
Oh, I also do a lot of genealogy with much of the data on the 1TB backed up to the 2TB
So, you see, I cannot keep iPhoto in the TimeMachine backup due to the size of the libraries.
Also, I found that external drives are not happy on the hub. Got a powered one, but still wary of that since I ruined an external drive on my MacBookPro.
This iMac has only four USB ports in the back. Now, with the 4TB, I have to keep swapping out drives depending on what I am using. Apple could have supplied me with more ports.
Almost got at 4TB Thunderbolt drive [RAID], but the reviews weren't very good. If I had a Thunderbolt, that would free up a USB port.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I sure am tired of losing sleep over this....yes, I wake up and can't get back to sleep pondering these issues.
    Thank you.

  • Help! Lost Apps, Incomplete backup?

I backed up my iphone before the update but after the update the backup appears incomplete?
Itunes now only lists 4 apps. But I had at least 10 before including my Password file which is now gone.
Can I use "restore" to get them back?

Apps are not included in the iphone backup at all, nor is any other itunes content.
All of this should be in itunes on your computer. Anything purchased on your iphone should be transferred to your computer regularly and included in your regular backup copy of your computer ( not your iphone).
If you have failed to transfer your apps, then you will have to redownload them:  Open itunes store, click Purchased, iunder Quick Links
