Incomplete booting from ext HD on Intel iMac

I have recently upgraded from my G5 desktop to a new iMac 2.4 model. After transferring the data, etc across I wanted to create a clone by backing up onto an External Firewire Drive, just as I had been regularly doing with the G5. Initially I used the disc utility and later in the >partion> options switched from APM to GPT, proceeded to clone using SuperDuper! In both partion modes the startup disc looked happy to boot from the FW disc and indeed seemed to boot from it.
I thought task done when asked for the login name, HOWEVER, this was followed by the desktop screen and the "Blue Spotlight" in the corner. There it just froze! There is no other info on the menu bar and nothing loads on the desktop. There was also another 10 seconds or so of ext HD activity.
I use "Ice Cube" enclosures, gen 1 & 2, and neither FW800 or FW400 seems to make a difference. This PATA drive has never previously caused me any problems especially with SuperDuper! backup's.
What am I missing? Could somebody please help?

Not perhaps the best forum for your issue. You have posted this in the section specifically for dealing with iMac displays, which does not sound like it is your problem.
Perhaps posting in the 'Using you iMac' section might be better.

As you can check in this website, you are running the most recent EFI and SMC version available for your computer. In this case, reset the SMC and the PRAM, and finally, try to use Boot Camp Assistant

  • Unable to boot from a cd on several iMacs

I have read all the topics covering this situation but none of the responses seem to cover my situation. I am the computer fix it person at an elementary school and have about 8 iMacs that will not boot from a CD. I am trying to tidy these machines up for new teacher use by clearing off all old files and software and cleaning them up using the Norton Utilities CD. I am using the Norton version that boots to 9.2 and these machines are running either 8.6 to 9.0. I have tried both holding down the c key and choosing Norton as the startup disk. I thought perhaps reloading or upgrading the system system software on each machine (I'd even reformat the drive) BUT, guess what... the machines won't start up from a CD (back to original problem). The cd drive itself on each of these machines seems to be ok as the machines do play a cd and will let me run Norton on the hard drive when the HD is the start up drive, but one can't defrag the drive or run wipe info if the HD is the boot up CD.

Hi Marc have a nosey around here
    http://www.macnn.com/contributions/os85drivedamage.shtml
I know it deals with corrupt HD's but there seems to be a wealth of knowledge with this aprticular system. My knowledge is minimal pre 9.0 -sorry,but there seems to be quite a few strtegies to recover from the posted there. BTW is and external boot an option?

  • No audio from EXTERNAL iSight on Intel iMac

Hi, i have a curious problem:
When my external iSight is plugged into my Intel iMac, i am not able to get any sound from it onto the computer. When checked in the audio settings, the "current level" indicators either dont move, or shoot right to the top then go down very slowly (this is most weird, but rarley happens). The internal mic works fine. But i want the noise cancelling directional mic of the iSight, as i want webcam / recording of things not directly infront of the computer.
Its not the iSight its self, becuuse ive plugged that into my PowerBook G4 12" and it works like a dream. Tested in the audo preferences and also using skpes voice test feature.
Both computers have the latest versions from software update of pretty much everything.
Im stumped. I really want to use the iSight, and clearly it can be used like this, but something is fishy!
    Any ideas?

    Ok,
so ive found my own solution, but it seems crazy!!
I plugged my iSight with firmware 1.0.2 back into my PowerBook 12" running 10.3.9, went to software update, selected the iSight firmware update, downlaoded, installed and ran it. iSight updated.
I plugged back into my Intel iMac, and hey presto!!! It now works like a gem.
What i dont get is why i cant run the firmware update program on 10.4.*, when it seems neccessary to install the firmware update. Is it a Universal Binary issue? Inwhich case why hasn't it been updated, and if not, then what?
After all, if i didnt have an older mac which allowed me to run the firmware installer / updater then what could i have done.
Anyway, i hope this helps some people.
    Emma xx

  • No internal HD showing in iBook. Only boots from Ext HD or CD.

I think my hard drive packed it in. When I boot up I get a folder icon with a flashing ? on the screen.
A number of months ago I made a duplicate of my internal drive on an external HD with carbon cloner. Fortunately it made a useable boot copy which I'm using to boot the computer. I could not previously boot from the external HD so I didn't know if this was going to boot. But it did!
I tried running Techtool Pro but it locks up so I can't check any hardware. Disk util used to allow me to click on verify permissions but would then give an error and refuse to do anything. Now it doesn't even list the internal hard drive. Computer seems to run normally from the ext. HD. Sometimes when booting the computer I will hear a faint moaning sound in the laptop until it starts booting from the Ext HD. So I'm pretty sure the drive is shot. There was no warning to indicate any hard drive problems.
Is there anyway to do any hardware testing to determine if its only the hard drive or something else that's shot? Why would techtool not complete the first step of hardware testing (memory) at the beginning of the test? Is there a way to make it run so I can check the hardware? I've tried deselecting all and trying to run tests other than the hard drive ones but nothing happens once it starts the test. Is it because it had to use the internal hard drive to start the tests?
The computer is still under extended warranty but I can't find the apple web page link to check when I bought the computer. Yesterday I could find the link for my remaining warranty info but today I can't find it. Where is this link hidden?
I have also tried and tried to find a link in support to request a hardware repair but such an options seems to be non-existent. Is this possible?

One thing you can do is to run the Apple Hardware Test, which is on one of the gray CD's that originally came with your computer. It may be a separate disc or on one of the install discs. You should get one or more error codes which will indicate where the problem lies. You can then call Apple Technical Support on the telephone and give them the error code, which they can interpret. If you are under warranty, they will probably want you to send it in for warranty repair. They can also tell you how much time is left on your warranty. If you are at all close to the end of the warranty period, be sure and ask for a case number, which will document that the problem first occurred under warranty. This is important to do, because they will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed as long as you can show that it first occurred under warranty.
    Good luck!

  • Booting from Ext HDD / SSH / Codecs question

As I understand it, there are two things you can do to the apple TV.
    1. Boot from a regular mac os x install on an external HDD from the USB port
    2. Take the HDD out, enable SSH / install codecs, etcs
My question is quite simple then:
Is it possible to boot from the ext HDD and then install perian / flip4mac components and enable SSH without opening up the Apple TV?
From my understanding of the above, logic says, "yes"
    Regards
    Paul

As I understand it, there are two things you can do to the apple TV.
    1. Boot from a regular mac os x install on an external HDD from the USB port
I doubt this is possible, besides a number of issues that you may or may not be able to resolve in instructing the tv to boot from another SUD, I doubt the tv has the ability to run a regular OS anyway (RAM limitations etc) but that is just my opinion, I have no specs to support this.

  • Cannot boot from installed disk on Intel Xserve

    I have an Intel Xserve.
I have had it for some months,it has been working fine, it is a standby backup machine to others and is used as a testbed.
I have just installed from the supplied DVD 10.4.8.
The installation goes smoothly, however after the first reboot. The system is trying to install from dvd again.
I have tried installing a known working Intel boot disk, and this just gives a folder with the flashing question mark.
I have tried formatting the disk and partitioning making sure to use GUID partition and it doesn't boot.
I can however boot from a external FW drive with 10.4.10 installed.
I can then go into Startup disk and set the boot disk as on of the installed drives, but this has No effect.
I am currently trying to Clone from the FW drive to an installed drive.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
Can someone tell me what I can try to resolve this.
All I have read regarding Flashing Question Marks is to ensure disks are using GUID partion and when booting from another disk to set the boot disk in the System Prefences.

    Welcome to the forum!
You're missing the first disk which is "Rescue and Recovery", followed by CDs 1-7.
Make sure to re-align the partitions before or after OS installation in order to get the proper utilization of that SSD.
    Good luck.

  • Late 2012 Mini won't boot from ext HDD with 10.8

Having just replaced an early 2009 Mini with a later 2012 mini, I tried booting off an external HDD that is a backup with Mountain Lion 10.8 as the OS.  I selected it to be the boot drive after holding down the option key, but the boot process never went beyond the white screen/Apple logo, even after waiting for minutes.
The external drive is in a Newer 3.5" enclosure with a FW800 port connected to the Mini via a FW800 cable.  After booting from the internal drive I can view and change items in the 10.8 external drive.  This drive previously booted fine from my old Mini.
[Note:  This is not related to my earlier "Snow Leo won't boot" question.]
    Thanks

The problem is the version on the external drive, if created
on the old Mini (infered from ""This drive previously booted
fine from my old Mini.")   won't boot on the new Mini because
it lacks drivers that are not available on the general Mountain Lion
updates.  Since the new Mini came out after 10.8.2, only the
version on it contains the proper drivers.  Also, if the version
on the external drive is earlier than 10.8.2, it will never boot
as no Mac can boot to an OS older than it was shipped with.
Whenever 10.8.3 comes out, it will likely sync all current models again.

  • Thunderbold boot from ext vs internal 7200

Is if faster to boot from a Thunderbold drive than It would be to boot from a 7200 2.5 internal?
Would you notice a big difference in you performance in logic pro and in general ?

Well, I was able to get down to my vendor and spent the entire morning cloning the Mac mini to the Backup Drive... Phew they haven't start work on the Mac mini yet.
    But here's the "mysterious thing":
I mounted the Backup Drive which is supposed to be corrupted or something, use Mac mini's Disk Utility to erase and reformat the backup disk, check again and everything is fine.
Use SuperDuper to clone the drive.
After that, I use Disk Utility to check the Clone Backup Drive and it return some sort of error in red, that the disk cannot be repaired, but this time it is mountable.
This lead me to conclude that either
-the Mac mini itself might have some OS system error corruption something that was cloned to the Backup, hence the error message in Disk Utility, because before the cloning the Backup Disk was perfectly OK, according to DU
    and/or
-The Backup disk itself is faulty, easily done as I can just replace a new hard disk
    What is your comment, opinion?
Anyway, I've reached my office and just in case, I am copying all the Users' data (not clone) to another disk, back up of a back up.
And when the Mac mini is back I will re-install/re-format etc a fresh new OS, and just copy over the data files; Then check the status of the Backup Drive.
    Cheers

  • Startup Manager arrows but no drives (trying to boot from ext

Today my old eMac (ppc 10.4.11) that I will replace soon froze up and will boot only to a grey screen.  I tried safe-boot and pram reset to no avail.  I had earlier made a clone of the eMac drive* and would like to boot from that (via firewire). I option start up I'll get to the blue Startup Manager with the 2 arrows, a spinning wristwatch but no drive icon. Eventually the wristwatch stops spinning.
I also tried to hook up a stand-alone dvd drive** (tried the firewire 1st, then the USB port)port) with the original eMac install dvd but get the same result as the external boot clone. (arrows, a spinning wristwatch but no drive icon.)
Any ideas on what to do to revive this eMac before I toss it out?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul
*This clone is old-ish, I think I'm pretty well backed up on recent files but would really like to do another review before I throw the eMac in the garbage.
**Don't know how to force open the dvd tray

Hold Mouse button down at boot to open the tray.
Seems the internal drive is bad & likely preventing recognizing the FW drive, but is the FW drive spinning up? try hitting the 3/4 circle arrow to have it look again for drives.

  • Cannot boot from ext drive after 10.5.2 update

I followed the procedure in tech article 306502 for creating and updating a bootable drive. I am in a PPC Mini environment. External drive is LaCie 160 GB rugged firewire portable with auxiliary power, I created the drive with 10.5.1 and it booted nicely to my two Minis (running 10.3.9 and 10.5.1). I then updated the external system with 10.5.2 from the Apple site and now it does not boot. Sits and spins with a white screen, grey apple, and whirligig. Whirled for 1/2 hour and tried deveral times.
I see this is not uncommon, but there have been no cures posted. One post suggested Disk Warrior. What would I do to with DW to move this problem forward. This is quite annoying, as I rely on being able to move around and boot from this drive when needed.
    Thanks for any help.
    Fred

after 10.5.2 two days ago, mine booted up regularly. however after the additional leopard graphics update last night, it no longer boots up at all. i have to usethis ****** vista to report the problem. my macbook is right beside me, with nothing but a plain blue screen. occasionaly the mouse cursor appears for about 30 seconds, then dissapears and the screen remains blue. what can i do? if i cant log in apple cant update my mac!!! help!!!

  • Transfer Library from PPC to new Intel iMac

I have an older G5 running iTunes 10 (latest) and am getting ready to buy new iMac that I assume will be running iTunes 10. My question is if there will be an issue transferring the library from the PPC version to the Intel version, even though they are both iTunes 10. My library is really big, around 300GB, because it contains movies, etc. I don't have room on my PPC HD to create a back up before I transfer the library. Will it be safe if I keep the PPC around for a couple weeks while I migrate files over? I'll have the same issue with my iPhoto and iMovie libraries. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks for the note.
I wouldn't have asked if I didn't already look at that.. I would do it in a second - unfortunately, there is no sense of real control here - for example, if I'm migrating mail, does it migrate all my messages? Just my password/account settings? I don't want my mail content. I can easily set up the password/account settings by hand. Should I? I don't know.
I don't want to migrate all apps... I want to migrate iTunes.
I don't want to migrate all users... just me.
But... I am not willing to start poking "ok" and keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that I won't have to go through an hour of work to undo what I should have had the choice to avoid in the first place.
This may all be speculation, but it wouldn't be if the process was clear, or stated "all or nothing" - but it doesn't, at least, as far as I can tell.
The Apple site has little that really helps either:
    http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/migration.html
I sure don't mind doing things by hand - I've been doing that for 20 years. However, I do mind -undoing- things by hand.

  • Portege 3490CT - please help me to boot from ext CD

    Hello from Maine, USA.
I bought the 3490ct and a TDK brand USB CD-ROM drive. The 3490ct came with a formatted hard drive. I would like to boot my OS CD with the USB CD-ROM and get this computer running.
Can it be done? Do I need to get the port replicator and floppy drive?
I tried opneing the computer up to remove the hard rive and put the files on manually but it looks difficult to remove and I don't want to ruin anything (it's surrounded by those tiny cables that are hard to work with)
Help! How can I get an OS onto this thing!
    Thank you,
    Craig

    OK,
I have the port replicator and the unit with nothing but command.com on it, I have no drives.
Can I send data to it's hard drive via the network? If not can I send data to the hard drive with a PCMCIA hard drive?
I don't have a PCMCIA hard drive but am willing to get one...
How can I get data to this unit's hard drive?
    Thank you,
    Craig

  • Silent restart while upgrading from 10.5.8 (Intel iMac)

I am trying to upgrade my iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) but when the installation runs for about 10 minutes the computer just restarts with no error message. Anybody has had similar problems upgrading to OS.X 10.6?

More information would be helpful, such as what DVD are you using to upgrade to 10.6?
