Incomplete Clip In Sony EX 1 Transfer

Hi there I'm not sure if this is a Final Cut problem but I shot in Sony EX 1 and it wont let me import a clip as it says incomplete on the EX1 Transfer Program. I need this shot though as someone get shot.

the SxS card will slot straight into the ExpressCard/34 slot on your MBP
you will need the SxS device driver from Sony's website
you will also want Sony's XDCAM Transfer software which is far superior than using the XDCAM EX Log and Transfer plugin for FCP
you might also need or want the XDCAM EX Clip Browser app.
While you're downloading and installing all that you might want to read this workflow document on working with the EX camera's and FCP, and check out these XDCAM EX1 shooting tips

  • Sony NX5U Log & Transfer Long Clips Issue

I've used FCP Studio for a very long time, and have been using the Sony NX5U camcorder for 3 years.  Never had any problems once FCP 7.0.3 came out.  But about a year and a half ago, I started noticing long clips would crash FCP 7 just seconds before the end of the upload.  The max length seems to vary between 65 minutes and 75 minutes.  I could swear I had earlier projects with longer clips and no problem but couldn't track any down.  Yesterday I uploaded a 74 minute clip no problem, but a 93 minute clip crashed.  Today a 68 minute clip crashed the program.  Never had a problem with clips under 60 minutes.
The upload indicator bar gets within 1/32 of an inch from the end when the crash happens.
My work-around has been to break the clip into clips shorter than 60 minutes.  I overlap the time code by about 1 second and then put it all together on the timeline.
I started looking at the forum today because in the last few days I recorded two separate projects each with multiple long rolls of either music performances or speeches.  Most are about 90 minutes, two as long as 180 minutes.  It's a hassle breaking these clips into shorter pieces so today I started reviewing the forum to see if anyone else has run into this.
There doesn't seem to be a lot posting about it, and the the ones that do post seem to have different "crash" times ... I saw one having a similar problem with clips 45 minutes in length, for example.  The only suggestions offered are to use programs like Clip Wrap.
Is this really a restriction with Sony AVCHD files and Log & Transfer in FCP 7?  I tried a few third-party solutions but they seemed cumbersome.  When FCP 7 Load & Transfer works, it works great.  It's just these 65+ minute clips that are the problem.
I just doubleclicked on a 123 minute clip in the AVCHD Package in the Finder, and it opened fine in QuickTime Player X.  I can export it out of there. The "Movie" export did it very quickly ... less than 20 minutes ... but it ends up as an H.264 file so I would need to render in FCP 7 or deal with it in Compressor to get it to ProRes.  But it does give me one cohesive clip.
What other experiences have users had trying to Load & Transfer long Sony AVCHD clips into FCP 7?
I'm OS 10.8.4 on my iMac and 7.0.3 in FCP.  I run into the same length restrictions running FCP 7 on a new MacBook Pro.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.

I've never worked with clips that long but have noticed a problem skimming longer clips in Log + Transfer to set in / out markers.
My advice would be to use Clipwrap. You can either re-wrap the file or transcode it to PR.
Their gig is file conversion so if there's a problem they'll eventually fix it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Cursor jumping to end of clip in FCP log and transfer

I'm using AVCHD footage from a Sony hxr-nx5u camera. I copied the clips to a hard drive and am now using log and transfer to get the clips into FCP. My problem is that on some of the longer clips (pieces over about 10 min) the cursor start to jump or snap to the end.
Example, through the first part of the clip I can drag the viewing cursor back and forth along the clip's timeline. When I let go, it stays there. If I do the same thing in the second half or later of the clip, when I let go the cursor jumps to the end of the entire clip every time. I can't log or mark in and out points for the second half of the clip unless I just let it play though. (If I do let it play through, I still can't go back and adjust it)
I'm using Final Cut 7 and think it's fully updated.
Very frustrating to say the least. Can anyone provide any help on this?

    Hi -
No first hand experience at this, but my understanding is there is currently a problem importing clips from that camera that are over 10-15 minutes.
See this thread for a possible workarounds/solutions:

  • P2 Clip Problem - Incomplete Clip

I transfered the contents of a Firestore drive to my computer, and then imported all the files through the P2 import window in FCP 5.1.4 (pretty sure). I never recieved the "one or more P2 clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupt clips" error, everything seemed to be fine. However one of the clips says "incomplete" next to the file number in the viewer. When I play the clip in the viewer, the clip ends when there should be more video (cmaera shot a few more cenes on the day). ie. The clip is 5 min when it should be 8 min. I tried reimporting the clips from the firestore folder but the same thing happens. This is not good as of course the missing video is the most important.

    Got answer somewhere else.

  • Spanned Clip will not log and transfer

    The editor:
    Mac Pro 10.4.11
    FCP 6.0.2.
    Quicktime Version 7.4.1 (14)
30 minutes of video shot to a P2 card on an HVX200 is unable to log and transfer. Plays fine in the browser and on camera.
    Workflow tried:
Write protect P2 and connect HVX200 to Mac via firewire.
Set scratch disk, then log and transfer (clip says spanned).
Error (red caution sign, tried retry, same error).
Tried P2CMS to ingest footage on a firewire drive, then log and transfer, same error.
    Any suggestions?

    One word for ya: Raylight.
I had the same problem. I tried P2CMS, renaming, and any trick I could think of. Raylight to the rescue. It creates a "pointer" MOV file to the actual P2 media and then you simply import the Raylighted MOV files into FCP. No data loss, and way quicker than a P2 transfer.
    Well worth the money.

  • P2 incomplete clips

Can anyone tell me how to get 'incomplete' and 'spanned' P2 clips into L&T in FCP 6? When I add to queue they just go into idle and I get a red explantion mark.
All the clips are incomplete or spanned and the other curious thing is that in the pulldown sproket preference pane, unlike in the various tuturials I have viewed, (ie Shane) there is no information showing about codecs even though I have downloaded the latest Panasonic AVC-Intra Decoder for Mac. How do I get it into the pref pane?
I have also tried the P2CMS download, but it isn't obvious to a layman like myself how to get the files into FCP.
I understand the princible about 'stop start' filming and the clips could span different cards ... but how do I get over my problem. Any help would be very welcome!

The first thing I do when I get P2 card errors (with the understanding that I have copied the ENTIRE contents of each card over intact), is to put the card back in the camera and run the included file repair utilities.
Once I know the file is good in the camera, I recopy the card over, back it up and try again. Has worked every time for me.

  • Import incomplete clips

    hello!
I just got a new HD camcorder - the Samsung HMX-H200 - and everytime I try to import, the clip gets cut short. I play the clip(s) in import mode & they seem normal & everything's there, but when I check the events once they're imported, there's a huuge chunk of the end missing :S
I've yet to try to convert the MP4's +and then+ import - I'd rather not have to do that for every time I edit.
Any & all help is greatly appreciated

    woops!
i think it was just a weird glitch.
when i tried importing it manually, the videos were greyed out
no idea what changed the second time around :S

  • Problem transferins clips from Sony DCR-SX41 to imovie!!! Please, Help me!!

I'm having a really hard time in transferring the videos from my camcorder to iMovie 09. The computer do not recognize the camera. A folder appear on desktop, but can not open. The filo on my camcorder is .MPEG2, Every time I try, a window pop up with a message "the movie can not be opened." "The file is not a movie file". I have tried to download MPEG STREAMCLIP from Squared 5, as suggested by the people from Apple store where my computer was checked if there was a problem it, but after the download is done, there is 2 folders, one is "Aboiut save as AVI.rtf, and the other "Save as AVI.component", but is blank, there nothing in there, a message "The movie could not be opened" "The specified file fork does not exist". What am I doing wrong? Please, help me!!!!
By the way, I have plenty of space on my computer, this is not the problem.

    Hi
Is it so that You trie to use a NTSC-Camera ?
I think that You got a very big problem - as I tried to do it the other way around.
I got a tape from US (NTSC)
It play back nicely on my SONY TRV-900E (PAL) (with playback NTSC) on LCD screen on Camera and via analog out to a TV - BUT I had to put a VHS-VCR (which also playback NTSC) in between.
    Then connected
    • via FW to Mac - NOTHING
    • via analog-out to Canopus ADVC-300 via FW to Mac - NOTHING
    May be (not tested)
Camera (analog out) to VHS-VCR then analog out from this to Canopus ADVC-300 via FW to Mac
Might work but still has to be tested.
    I would rather
    • borrow a NTSC-Camera (alt in Your Case - a PAL-one) - then use this to import into iMovie and a project set in same fasion.
To convert from one to the other (when got it into the Mac) - DO NOT
    • import into wrong type in iMovie or iDVD (Might work - BUT Result in iDVD are very BAD)
    • I use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - and it does this so much better
    • There are Pro applicastions that can do this at an astronomical cost and the result is not so much better.

  • HT5409 clips on sony ax2000 mount as quicktime with avchd file that cannot be opened - Help!

I have tried iskysoft medie converter and aiseesoft AVCHD converter for Mac -- they cannot read the AVCHD file. I cannot get either program to load the file. I have conntected the camera to the mac with USB and dowloaded the file, but then it cannot be opened in ANY program. Smaller files have opened in Quicktime, but these have many multiple clips. Anyone know how to convert these?

Yes, you have missed a few things... as mentioned, what camera, what 'options', such as 24p, 60i, whatever... how you have output the results, etc...
I personally can not 'play' AVCHD on my aging laptop, my 'workhorse'. I always have to resize down to something less than 1080x1920 to 'play' smoothly on it.
Also, H.264, has a number of 'options', such as maximum bit rate, which does impact the visual quality on playback... anything less than 20-30 Mbits/sec is too low... (which of course leads into whether your machine can play it or not...). In addition, where you store your output also impacts playability, USB driver are notoriously slow, and often a clip will play off the main harddrive, but hiccups off of a USB...
So, yeah, you have missed a few items, and probably more...

  • [Help Request] Log and Transfer with Sony HDR-SR10

    Hello Everyone,
I am very new to Final Cut Express and I am trying to import the clips from my camera (Sony HDR-SR10) to Final Cut. Here are the settings that I have for FCE and the camera:
    *Easy Setup*
    Format: Apple Intermediate Codec
    Rate: (all rates)
    Use: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
+settings found in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9162394)+
    *Camera Settings*
HD FH (AVC HD 16M (FH)
Then I mount the camera on the desktop. Then File > Log and Transfer. However, no clips appear in the viewer. I have tried adding a folder to the Log and Transfer window, but no clips show up. I have about 30gb of footage on my camera, so it's not like the camera is blank or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Jon

    Jonathan,
    In addition to Tom's advice...
I have an SR-11 which I believe is nearly identical to your's. Do you have any SD video on your camera? If you do you may have to erase these clips. When I first started using FCE, I had to get rid of any SD footage I had before FCE would display my HD clips in the Log and Transfer window. Fortunately I only had a couple of test clips in SD, so erasing them wasn't a big deal. I don't know why this happens, but since I only shoot in HD mode I never looked into in further.
Additionally insure your playback mode is set for HD and not SD (I don't have my camera with me right now, but if I remember correctly there is a selection in one of the menus for this).
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Log & Transfer not transferring clip in full

    Hello-
Running FCP7 on Dual Quad Core Mac Pro, OS 10.6, capture scratch on external Firewire drives.
Working on big documentary project shooting almost exclusively 1080 30p files with Canon HDSLRs (5D, 7D, T2i, T3i.)  Transcoding the footage - to Apple Pro Res 422 LT 1080 30p - thru FCP's log and transfer tool has been a successful workflow up to this point.
But recently discovered that a healthy chunk of footage wasn't fully transcoded - original clips were all represented but NOT in their entirety, ie all the clips were there, just not in full original durations. (When originally did the L&T transferring, FCP didn't give any error messages; I only discovered when it seemed like there were large chunks of missing footage.)
And it's been hard to discern a pattern.  Annoyingly, these partial durations are not true off all the clips in any particular L&T batch, just some.  Both relatively long and short clips (under and over 30 seconds) are getting cut off.  Nor is there any kind of distinct duration cut-off point; the abbreviated clips all cut out at random times.  I seemed to have isolated the problem clips to a week’s period of intensive L&T work back in early Feb.  And since that point I have been able to L&T transcode full durations successfully.  And I have been re-transfering the partial files - on the same system - and it seems to be transcoding clips in full.
Anyone ever run into this issue?  Any idea why/how it happened?  Couldn't imagine there's some buried preference setting that's inhibiting transferring the clips in full.
I guess I'm just going to have to re-transcode all the incomplete clips but bigger worry is preventing this in the future.  Tough workflow going forward if I can't have confidence in L&T tool not to transfer in full.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Nick.

Ssure enough, clips appear after about 3 minutes of leaving log and transfer open. As long as I don't close L&T, the following directories will mount quickly, as expected. As soon as I close L&T, same pattern.
This is consistent with directories with as few as one, 30 second clip as well as the more usual gathering of multiple clips. I noticed an Identical thread on RED's discussion board. The directories I'm working with are HVX-200 / DVCProHD.

  • Whole clips not tranfering from log and transfer into FCP studio 2

720p 24p clips from P2 get cut short when transfered from log and transfer. I can play the whole clips in the log and transfer window to verify they are there but once they are brought into my project they play about half way through, then the sound drops out and the clip stops short of where it really ended. the clips in the canvas window or on the timeline when played all the way to the end are not the complete original clip? i have tried switching every setting i can think of but to no avail. any ideas out there? thanks a million

no, no in or out points set in log and capture. what's wierd is that clips shot at 24 fps are the ones running short and clips shot at 60 fps come in fine (the slow motion isn't happening but i think i can change that with cinema tools?) anyway, thanks for the suggestion
