Incomplete Finder find command results

In Tiger I would use the search box in any Finder window to look for files. It would do a decent job of sorting and it displayed results sorted by "type" of file. With Leopard I cannot find folders or files in the user's Library folder (and other places). Is there a way to get Finder's find command to do a more thorough search? BTW I usually look for folders and files by name.

system files are excluded from searches by default. to include them do the following.
type command+f to bring up a search window. Click on "kind", scroll down and select "Other". in the resulting popup choose "system files" and set to include.

  • Incomplete Finder search results in Mavericks

    Hi guys. It appears search results in Finder in Mavericks are incomplete.
    I am used to delete preference files left behind after I trash an app -like .plist files located in home folder/library/preferences -they are showed no more in search results. Obviously finder search criteria are customized to show system and hidden files.
    It looks like a bug. Can you reproduce same issue?

    Back up all data.
    In Contacts, select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Contacts Archive
    from the menu bar, and save the archive to your Desktop.
    If you use iCloud, disable contact synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. When prompted, click Delete From Mac. Re-enable synchronization. Wait for the contacts to re-synchronize, then test.
    If you don't use iCloud, or if the contacts fail to synchronize, delete all contacts, then select
    File ▹ Import…
    and import the archive you created. It may take a few seconds for the contacts to be indexed. Test.
    If you don't like the results of this procedure, quit the application. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
    Restore the folder that opens from the backup you made before you started.

  • "Find" command in Appleworks word processing--make results truly visible

    Hello, newbie here, so maybe this is the oldest gripe in the Appleworks 6 book.
    When I scrub a word document with the "Find" command, the hits are darn near impossible to see. Just a very faint outline. Is there some command that can bulk up the "found" box on the document, or perhaps fill it with an opaque yellow or some such?
    I really would like to save an hour or so of my lifetime by not glaring at the screen trying to spot the so-called "Find."
    My color vision is not perfect (the case with about 10% or men), so that might contribute to my problem. But if so, software developers should have a little more on the ball and avoid this.
    Many thanks,
    Rick Reed

    Hi Rick,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
    Definitely not the oldest complaint in the AW 6 book, as it's an OS X issue rather than an AppleWorks one. The rectangular outline that you (don't) see is a default highlight condition for a non-active window. When you are using the Find/Change dialogue that dialogue is the Active (ie. Front) window, and all others, including the window in which the search is taking place, are Inactive.
    While there's no cure for the problem, there are two things you can do to 1. work around it or 2. improve the situation.
    1. Move the Find/Change dialogue to a place where it will still be visible (ie. clickable) when you bring the document window to the front. Click on the document to bring it forward (and make the selection more visible); click the dialogue to continue the Find.
    2. You can set the system highlight colour in System Preferences > Appearence. The preset choices are all in the pastel range, but choose Other and you'll get the Colour Picker where you can choose a more intense colour. There is a trade-off here, though—the more saturated colours will make it difficult or impossible to read the highlighted word in the document when the window is active.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Find command not highlighting all search results

    Hi,
    Acrobat Pro 9, Mac OS 10.6.8
    This seems to be a fairly recent problem.
    When I do a search -- using the Find command -- of a PDF document for a particular word, Acrobat in some cases places the cursor to the right of the word while in other cases it highlights the word with a blue color. How can I get the program to find and color highlight all instances of the search term?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Finder Find command is suddenly not speedy and works weirdly

    I have a number of small, and one large, problems when I use command-F to find things in the Finder.
    After upgrading to Leopard from Tiger, like all users I experienced a WONDERFUL increase in the usefulness of this command. So I use it a lot, and for a long time it worked perfectly. My current problem is that when I type command-F, it opens a new finder window, and...
    (1) ... when I click on the box to type the words I want to find, the insertion point doesn't appear, but the letters do appear there after I type something [minor], and...
    (2) ... a FEW results of the search do appear instantly, but the window seems to enter a semi-frozen state [major; see below], and ...
    (3) ... the Finder window which is finding shows signs of being inactive (scroll bar bubble is gray, not colored; columns do not sort when column header is clicked); window is in some ways unresponsive [middling], and ...
    (4) ... after awhile (often as long as 30 or 40 seconds) the window suddenly finishes whatever was holding it up and the full set of results appear, the scroll bar bubble becomes colored, column-header-clicking sorts the column instantly.
    In short, there is now a long, weird, semi-inactive period between the initial appearance of a few Find results and the final appearance of the entire list, when I have gotten used to the seemingly 100% instantaneous appearance of a Find request's results. I'm spoiled, and I want my wonderful Find command back!
    The only thing I can think of that I might have done to contribute to this is that I HATE the behavior of the Finder searching using the title bar's oval Find window, so I removed that part from the default window setup. That is, I've changed my preferences so that when a new Finder window appears, there is no oval Find window in its upper right-hand corner. Thus, when I type command-F the Finder notices that there is no Find window to put the insertion point into, so it opens a few window with a search field at the top (the "Search for" box). (And then it refuses to put an insertion point into the window where I'm supposed to type the Search string.)
    Am I being clear?

    Did you read my hint at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080229204517495 ?

  • Can i get access to the find command in Word via activeX?

    Does anyone know if it is possible to search through a word document using activeX commands from labview? Basically i need to use the "find" command from Word.
    Thanks for your help

    Excellent thanks a lot.
    I've now got the search function working but im having a little trouble getting the results i want. What do you mean by "new selection"? is this the output refnum from the execute node?
    Im looking to search through a word document for a certain paragraph number then highlight this paragraph in some way.
    At present i have used your method to find the section number and then used a frame property on the output refnum followed by select method cascaded from this. This has the effect of selecting the number causing the word window to jump to the desired point but only the first line of the paragraph is shown because it places the found text at the bottom of the screen.
    Do you have any suggestions as to how i could select the en
    tire paragraph? I also cannot get any output from the select method in this way, am i using it incorrectly?
    Thanks again for your time

    Does any one have any hints towards solving this problem?  Thank you for any help.

    Hi,
    taffners wrote:
    Thank you everyone for your help.  I attached my code.  It works now but kinda slow.  Does anyone have any hints on making it faster.
    Important : when you use the find command, it's preferable to use the properties ( look in and look at).
    Example : find searchRange what searchTerm look in values look at whole
    Otherwise, it will search according to the criteria of your last find.
    Example, if you uncheck 'Find entire cells only', and after that you run the script,
    find column 2 what 10.0 -->  match 110.0 or 1110.0 or 310.0, .... , because it look at part.
    set screen updating to false : Yes it improves the speed.
    Here are my tests (no duplicate values in the Excel column ) on old computer (Powermac G5) .
    set screen updating to false without any activate object command
    2000 rows --> 3.7 minutes,  your script : 11.5 minutes
    4000 rows --> 7.5 minutes, your script : 23 minutes
    8000 rows --> 15 minutes,  your script : 46 minutes
    But, it's faster to search through a list without using the Excel find command, no need to set the screen updating, You can continue working on the workbook or another workbook, this will not disturb the script.
    Tests on my script :
    2000 rows --> 4 seconds
    4000 rows --> 21 seconds
    8000 rows --> 1.3 minutes
    17000 rows --> 6 minutes
    Here is the script :
    main()

    on main()
          script o

  • Using Find Command

    Help
    If anybody can try this and tell me how it works I would be forever grateful.
    I can not seem to get the FIND command to find timecodes
    of clips in a sequence. I have copied all my clips from my bin and pasted them into a new sequence I'll name search, then I use the find command to locate a specific TC. this yields no results everytime!
    It works for Names/Markers not for time code!
    I am using FCP 4.5.
    I really need this to work.
    Power Mac Dual 2.0 G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   FCP 4.5

    Thanks for the welcome & the reponses.
    The reason I am searching this way is because when
    you search in the bin it doesn't enter the colons
    for timecode like it does when you search a sequence.
    It does however at least WORK in the search bin mode!
    I wish it I could enter TC the same way as a sequence it is soo much faster
    If anybody has a inside track to Apples FCP code developers maybe they could put in the next upgrade.

  • Self-created invisible system file not found via Finder's Find command

    I need to see what is being created on my hard disk. To achieve that, I create a test file, call it .new in TextEdit, remove the hidden .rtf extension, and place it in one of the folders in /Library/Application Support. Then, I use Finders Find command, and ask to search This Mac, Created date: today, System files are included, File visibility Visible or Invisible, leaving the input field (for file contents or name) blank. The newly created file isn't found. I type its name into the input field, with the same result. I change its name to .new.plist . Same result. Suspecting that "System files" acutally means system files and doesn't include the Library on the top level, I place that same item in /System/Library/PodcastProducer. Same result.
    Seriously, this is entirely incomprehensible. The Find command obviously doesn't do what it says it does. Could anyone tell me how to get it to, or name some alternative?
    Thanks a lot.

    Actually you CAN get ressults for .whatever files and folders. I created a saved search for my home folder with the criterion of "File visibility::Invisible Items" and then "None of the following are true::Name contains" DS_Store, Icon or localized. The result is a list of 65 invisible items including things such as the files /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.0017f20dca84.plis t (a dot file), /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.freeverse.5012 (something with the invisible flag set), the dot folder /Users/francine/.fontconfig, and many others of all of these types. I thought it was interesting that lots of them were inside the ~/Library folder, even though I did NOT specify including system files.
    I don't know why the original poster can't get Spotlight, using the the Command-f method, to display dot files. When I was setting my own invisible items search up I did manage to crash the Finder once, so it may be that the query for invisible items is buggy. Here's the Raw Query:
    (true) && (((kMDItemFSInvisible = 1) && (!((kMDItemDisplayName = "\DS_Store"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\Icon"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\localized"cd)))))
    If you go to a folder, do Command-f, then change from the default "Kind" to "Raw Query" and paste the above in as the query, you ought to get all the invisible files and folders, except the .DS_Store, Icon and localized files (of which there are likely hundreds of 'em in your home folder).

  • Add 'Size' field to Find search results

    Is there a way to add a size field to the window when using the Finder's Find command. When doing this in Tiger the search results had this and other info, but in Leopard there is only Name, Kind and Last Opened.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Yeah, this is just one more of the little things that make me regret upgrading to Leopard. Nothing but little take-aways by Apple that effect the normal day-to-day kinds of user interactions; horrible search functionality, mind boggling step backwards in the usefulness of ical, horrible printer support, loss of single click and hold dock folders....

  • Show hidden files in finder search results

    I discovered my backup HD was rapidly full because of After Effects Cache folder hughe size.
    I fixed it in CCC to not to backup that directory but I need to remove all the old ones.
    I am able to see them under Users/Library.......  (hidden by default). I also have deleted some 50Gb AE cache folders.
    But I have a lot of folders.
    I've tried to search all of them 'Adobe After Effects Disk Cache' but finder search does not display them. I also tried Terminal 'locate' on /Volume/HDbackup, no results
    Thanks

    Hi Viking, thanks for your help.
    The purpose to get them in Finder search result is to select them all and send them to trash at once.
    To test your commands I changed
    '~' by /Volumes/....../_CCC\ Archives  and '.*' by 'Adobe After Effects Disk Cache'
    I got lots of 'permission denied'
    I also tried
    find -x  ~  -name 'Adobe After Effects Disk Cache' \( -type d -exec find {} \; -prune -o -print \) 2>&1 > hidden.txt
    where it is supposed to find one result but hidden.txt was empty
    'Adobe After Effects Disk Cache' is a directory
    What do you suggest?
    Thank you

    Perhaps the following gives you the results you are looking for:
    find -user root -lsI think the problem you are experiencing is due to the hidden . and .. directories, which are also owned by root. For example:
    ls -l .... will show you the files of the current directory and hence parsing the found objects using the -exec ls {} command will produce the duplicated result you are seeing.
    You might be able to use your command by adding "-type f", but I think using "-ls" is more efficient.

  • Unix find command...

    My problem exists with the behavior on the unix find command, or my lack of understanding of it.
    For example, I work for a graphics company and we have a constant folder structure like this:
    *12345 Apple - Poster*
    ~....~01_Layouts
    ~....~02_Images
    ~....~03_Fonts
    ~....~04ClientOriginals
    ~........~01.28.08_14:46
    ~........~03.07.08_15.03
    ~........~03.10.08_17.22
    When we receive files from a customer, the CSR creates a folder inside 04ClientOriginals following a format like 03.06.08_10.15, and copies the files/folders from customer supplied media into them.
    I have set up a launchd script that finds all of the date/time stamped folders inside of 04ClientOriginals that have not been modified within the past month and stuff them with the Stuffit command line utility. I do that with this command:
    find . -type d –mtime +30 -ipath #/04ClientOriginals/# -exec /usr/local/bin/stuff -f sit5 -m 2 -o -D {} \;
    This command works fine except in those cases where there are folders over 30 days old inside of a parent directory that is not 30 days old yet. I only want the find to descend to one level below 04ClientOriginals, and no further.
    I thought by adding an extra "/" at the end of the path #/04ClientOriginals/#/ instead of #/04ClientOriginals/# would keep it from descending further down, but when I try this the search returns no results. Also, I can’t use -maxdepth in my find arguments because the depth of 04ClientOriginals is not always constant.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Edit: Due to the lack of decent markup tools for formatting code on the Apple Discussion Board, the wildcards in my file paths have been substituted with a "#". Kind of ridiculous for a unix discussion board to not have code highlighting capability.

    I don't know if these will work or not. Regular expressions are powerful, but tricky. Plus, there are a few different, but similar, varieties. Also, I don't know if the find within a find syntax will work. This might be something that is better suited to Perl. You would then have much more control over what you are doing.
    Running this find command finds exactly what I'm looking for:
    find . -type d -name "04ClientOriginals" -exec find {} -mtime +30 -type d -maxdepth 1 ;
    I hope I'm wrong, but can't you call -exec only once? As a test I ran this:
    find . -type d -name "04ClientOriginals" -exec find {} -mtime +30 -type d -maxdepth 1 -exec ls -l {} ;
    If I invoke -exec a second time, I get this error:
    find: -exec: no terminating ";" or "+"
    find: -exec: no terminating ";" or "+"
    find: -exec: no terminating ";" or "+"
    I've searched high and low and I cannot find an example of the find command calling -exec more than once.
    My regex skills are pretty weak, so I'll only tread those waters if I have to.

  • Find Command Not Searching System Folders

    This seems like a tough question to answer but I cannot find a way to use the Finder's "Find" command to find files in the User/Library/ folder (ie: looking for specific preference files) or any other System folder for that matter.
    I was trying to find a certain ".plist" file using the "Find" command but even typing the exact, full name of the ".plist" file directly into the search box still wouldn't bring up a result in the list. I had to manually go into the Preferences folder and locate the file.
    Is this a limitation of the Finder's "Find" command or is there some way I can "tell" it to look in all the System folders?
    Thanks so much,
    Gerard

    Also, see http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html and my mod to Finder's Find at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6725932 for what you can change so you can find stuff excluded by the default structure.

  • "Find" command problems

    I'm using 10.4.2 and iCal 2.0.2. When I do a search using the Find command in iCal it only searchs the current month, is there a way to get it to expand the search for all the months? For instance when I enter the term: Lunch. It will show this months Lunch meetings but not last months.
    When I use Spotlight it will show all the entriies but for some reason most of them (90%) or more are listed as No Date and random. I recently started using iCal and imported most of the hostoical data from Now Up to Date.

    Here you go, from Apple Tech Support:
    After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.2, you may not be able to find iCal 2.0.2 events that were created prior to updating when using the search function in iCal.
    When you search for a particular event in iCal, iCal won't display the event in its search results, but you can find the event by browsing to the appropriate day in an iCal calendar or by using Spotlight.
    Solution
    From the iCal File menu, choose Backup Database.
    Quit iCal.
    Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources.
    Open each folder in the Sources folder and remove the file named "Index."
    Open iCal; it will re-index your events.
    Thank you,
    Apple
