Incomplete startup (OS10.4)

returned from vegas vacation to find my iMac only able to get to the blue screen on start-up. on restart it does the usual (chime) but stops when the screen turns blue (prior to any dialogue box appears). if i hold the shift key during start-up, it is fine except for my extensions are off (i think). any ideas on where the problem is and how to fix it?
thanks chad

Holding down the Shift key during startup triggers the Safe mode. if you are able to boot in this way, there's a good chance your iMac is still in healthy condition. Try starting in Single-User mode (Command + S during startup) and look what errors it prompts. Specific details could hopefully improve further assistances.
To switch back to the Mac OS X interface, type reboot from the given UNIX console and press the Return key.

Also, you might try unplugging all external devices except your keyboard and mouse, then startup normally - see if this works.

  • IMac unexpectedly shutting down

My iMac has begun to shut down unexpectedly, repeatedly. I've been struggling with this issue for two days now and so can describe the typical pattern of odd behavior. I use my computer in the office of my private English school. For several hours in the day I teach in the classroom next to my office and simply leave the computer on so I can pick up research and materials design where I left off. A couple of evenings ago I returned to my desk to find the Mac shut down. Odd, but not scary -- yet. I entered the Twilight Zone when I tried starting it up. It went something like this:
1st try- Partial startup, screen lights up, no chime, shutdown.
2nd try- Complete startup, no user apps launched, shutdown after less than a minute.
3rd try- Complete startup, begin cautiously checking for damage and causes, shutdown after several minutes.
4th try- Begins as 3rd try (above), checked Console log, attempted to set up diagnostics programs to determine cause, shutdown in about 20 minutes or so.
This basic pattern (1~4, above) has occurred three times so far. In addition, there have been other (less regular or perhaps more widely spaced timing?) instances. Also, I successfully booted from an external firewire drive dedicated to TechTools as an "edrive" and running Mac OS Tiger same as my Mac. To my horror, shutdown occurred after about 10 minutes booted in the external edrive! It was very late so I left it shut down and went to bed (for a very poor night's sleep!). Early the next morning, in my second attempt booted in the external edrive, I got a diagnostics utility launched (DiskWarrior) which found no directory damage on the internal drive! I decided to try another one (TechTools) and the Mac shutdown again while testing was going on!
At this point I had lessons I started the Mac and let it sleep while and put the whole mess aside till evening. I pondered everything I thought might be wrong. The Mac was still up and sleeping several hours later. Yet, when I tried to use it, it started the pattern of shutting down described above. I disconnected all peripherals and freed up ports, and tried agin.
Temperature is usually under control as I have designed an effective constant airflow system for my office that incorporates fans which keep air moving, so no dead air can collect in the space behind the Mac. In addition, I reposition my desk according to the season; now it is by a north window with no direct sunlight and which I keep cracked open to the cold winter air which bathes the back of the computer constantly. One cool Mac. Of course, if internal components, such as the sensor responsible for monitoring heat, are defective, this will not matter.
I searched the Internet using various search strings, both describing my problem and using log data copied from Console. I checked this Mac forum and tried 3 times to post a message (with one successful post, but to the wrong section!). I have read Tech blogs and everything else I can between shutdowns.
This message was written and saved several times. Any ideas?

    Hi Miriam:
Thanks for taking the time for this. I have benefited as a lurker from help you have given to others. Thank you, always.
I replaced the power unit over a year ago (I believe) supplied by mail from Apple. I have the exact records, but it would take too much time to dig them up and I am under the shutdown gun right now. Also, I am typing as fast as my chubby little fingers can hit the keys so there will be typos: apologies. I will dig out l those records after I get this email off to you and set them aside for my next post.
Against all my better instincts I decided to try and cure the problem by upgrading the OS and am now running Mac OS 10.5.2 (see below). Immediately after the OS upgrade the shutdown problem reoccurred once, then disappeared. If it were not for that one occurrence I would have called it cured. I decided to wait and see. The computer shut down unexpectedly a couple of more times, but randomly and infrequently, not following the pattern I outlined originally so I just kept observing it. As of today, the full-blown problem has returned, as originally described, again, as follows:
While using any application, or even left unattended with no application running, with nothing connected to the ports, the computer shuts down as if a kill switch had be pushed. (Unlike before the OS upgrade, no kernal error report appears.) Upon first restart attempt, all sounds indicate restart is happening normally, but before the screen lights up it shuts down again. This incomplete startup happens once, then on the second attempt, it starts up normally, if somewhat slowly. After some time (15~30 minutes or so?) it shuts down again (I'll try to set a stopwatch on that).
The only user alteration of the system software immediately previous to this new round of shutdowns was allowing an Apple auto-update (Safari). As far as general heat issues are concerned, I have a temperature monitor application installed and keep an eye on it. Also, I take environmental measures to keep the work area cool and cool air moving around the CPU. At the moment Istat Pro 4.6 (newest, today) reports: CPU 75 degrees, Hard Drive 53, Atilla (my internal drive name) 61. I know this is different than the power unit overheating problem you mentioned.
I am beginning to suspect malware and will pursue that angle when I get time (got classes to teach for the next 8 hours). Hardware information you requested (or more, perhaps) is below (clipped from System Profiler).

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum, suddenly has problems

This is the first system listed in my signature. This PC has been working well since it was built a couple of years ago. Recently, it seemed that the graphics were a bit taxed (I do some desktop publishing), and the system was running slower than normal. So I figured it might be time for a new video card. Installed a X1650PRO 256M and no post, no display. Checked that everything was seated properly, verified all connections, and tried again, nothing. Put the old card back in, nothing. Kicked it a few times and put the new card in with my fingers crossed, and she booted up. This was about a week ago. The system has been acting funky ever since with incomplete startups, random freezes, no display on boot, running very slow, and one time, Bios didn't see the hard drive array on POST. My first thought was that the power supply was overtaxed with the new card, but I am also considering a hard drive problem. Looking for some input... thanks

  • 2007 imac black screen...Graphics or Mobo issue ?

First of all i would like to thank those whose postcount is solely made up out of recommandations to have better bought applecare or contact the good people from apple support for browsing away fromthis post without copypasting such advise.
The problem is about a old 24" imac.
Initially it stopped booting to the OS but still chimed, now i am facing a black screen, no gong at boot and the external white light illuminated permanently.
After swapping around RAM and testing with known-good Ram of a same generation 20" imac - no change - i went and tried switching on without RAM ( now blinking light) which reacted like a known-good imac would without RAM.
The one green led visible after taking away the screen frame and removing the screen ( but leaving both cables connected so the screen "should" still work) on the MoBo close to the RAM slot is not lit if i unplug the Mobo from the power supply, unplugging screen, screen inverter and data cable separately, disconnecting power and data to HDD and DVD drive all reasulted in the same solid white external light, one green mobo LED and no display picture or boot jingle.
I then went to try connecting the power cable while the power button is pressed, resulting in all 3 fans at full spped and the hdd making seeking noises other than the incomplete startup noises earlier - but still white light and no display picture.
This all rules RAM as error out, makes the MoBo and PSU less likely but still potential candidates and points to the graphics as commonly faulty area.
Pitty is that the apple troubleshooting guide states it will be the motherboard as likely reason.
I took a deep smell around the mbo and its dust when removing it, no clog-up ( yet lots of it) and more important no smell of a burned resistor or cooked hardware - a smell i know alltoo well from electric bike controllers and former shot PC hardware due overclocking.
    Now, question is/ are:
    - What white light or mobo LED blink code should i see on a faulty graphics identified in post ?
Can a graphics card that is faulty halt POSt test with a white light as sole indicator ?
-Does any of my tests done and LED lights shown rule out the Movo as faulty, leaving only graphics and faulty graphics power supply rail as possible reasons ?
I could access another same imac to test the graphics card, but its a awfull lot of work.... if i could be more certain it is the graphics card and not the MoBo or PSU and if the CPU is likely give it the backing oven treatment, cross my fingers while tapping on wood for a few minutes and hope this refluxed the possible cracked G-DDR-Rams or the GPU`s soldering cracks tha appear to kill most older cards that do not go through overheating.

if the fan is running very loud, the sensors are telling it to. this means there is excessive heat hitting them.  try hitting the on/off button on the back of your iMac gently, and turn down the brightness on your keyboard to 2 or 3 lines. use the F1 key on your keyboard to turn the brightness down, while pressing the on/off button lightly, without turning the computer completely off. if the screen image appears again, it could be the LED screen sensor is overheating, causing the fans to kick into high gear, to try to cool the screen. if your screen does re-appear with lower brightness, you can use an external fan control (SMC Fan Control) app to manually adjust the fans on your iMac. This won't solve the heating issue, but will allow you to use your iMac temporarily. As it is long out of warranty, you will have to find other means to find the remedy.
So, in short, yes it may NOT be the GPU or logic board, but a heat sensor. let me know if lowering the brightness on your screen works to restore an image for you.

  • Incomplete iCal sync iPhone 4S OS6.0 & MacBook Pro OS10.6.8

    Hello community wisdom,
two weeks ago I switched from my old iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1) to a new iPhone 4S (iOS 6.0). Since then I have an annoying trouble with incomplete syncing of my iCal calendars (MacBook Pro OS10.6.8, iTunes 10.7). I do syncing via USB cable only. Besides iCal no other calendar being used.
When I set up the iPhone 4S initially all iCal calendars, adressbook etc data got transferred to the phone correctly. Two days later sync warned me about several hundreds of calendar conflicts :-( asking me to delete the entries in iCal. I denied and instead let sync replace the complete calendars on the phone by the iCal calendar.
I was good for two more days. Then I realized that not all newly created events are synced correctly. Both events created on the iphone and created on the MacBook Pro were affected.
Shortly after that sync insisted again on hundreds of conflicts. So I did a backup of all my iCal calendars on the MacBook and let the sync do what it wanted. Then I have imported my backups under different names into iCal so I could make a side-by-side comparison. ... as expected hundreds of events past, current and future had been deleted. I am unable to see any systematic behind the deleted entries.
I restored the correct calendars in iCal again and let sync replace the calendars on the iPhone.... well, again, the sync did not go well and the calendars on the iphone are incomplete...
I am at a loss. Any suggestions?

that didnt work. Tried reset sync, didnt help. Tried pasting the command, and i got this response:
There is no (UpgradedbTries) default for the (com.apple.SyncServer) domain.
    Defaults have not been changed.

  • Can I use an external drive for OS10.8 startup

I am currently running OS 10.6.8 on my iMac. I want to buy an app that requires at least OS 10.7.  Most of the apps I use would not be compatible with OS 10.8. I am wondering if I can install the 10.8 on a Seagate GoFlex external drive tha i have; and use it as a startup when I want to use the new app? It is connected by the 800 firewire and has about 1.5 TB of memory left.
What kind of issues would I likely encounter? I doubt I'd want to upgrade the majority of my apps in the future, but would like to utilize this one particular one.
    Thanks

    That will work just fine.
I have the opposite set-up.  I'm running Mountain Lion as my main OS on my MacBook.  I have a partition on one of my external drives (connected via FireWire 800) that has Snow Leopard installed.  I'll boot from that if I ever need to use any of the scant number of Power PC apps that I don't have replacements for.
Not knowing what the app is (or the specs of your computer), I can't tell you what specific issues you might encounter.  I can say that performance from booting and operating on an external drive may be a little slower then on the installed drive.  For a rarely used app, that probably won't be much of a drawback.

Not long ago I began to get messages upon start up of Firefox that I needed updating and the current version was not secure....To update I needed to upgrade my operating system. I had my Mac tech. update my operating system to OS 10.4.11 on my Power Mac G4 desktop. After doing so and updating the Firefox to 3.6.21 I found out that the Firefox start up page was lacking graphics - furthermore when I logged onto my bank there was no log out button and when I tried to download a driver for my printer the "Agree" button was not available to continue the download. • Informix JDBC logging fails at WLS startup - repost, 1st one incomplete

    Hi,
I am trying to find out how to see how many db queries I'm doing
for a CMP finder. I am using the Informix driver I downloaded
from BEA. When I start up WebLogic, I get the following in the
    jdbc.log file:
    DriverManager.initialize: jdbc.drivers = null
    JDBC DriverManager initialized
    registerDriver:
    driver className=weblogic.jdbc.informix4.Driver,weblogic.jdbc.informix4.Driver@20e990]

    weblogic.jdbcbase.informix4.InformixException: Informix error: -255 minor code=[0]
[ at processUpdate <Error> ] See Informix error codes for explanation
The Informix error manual says -255 means this was not in a
transaction. It seems to imply that WLS, in trying to start
    logging, was ending a transaction.

    Joe,
Thanks for the info. I downloaded the Informix driver, installed
it, and configured WebLogic to use it, and it worked fine.
Informix has its own way of turning debug on, but once I read
their driver doc, it was fairly easy.cool. glad to help.

Hi Matt. The stacktrace shows that the problem is coming during
the driver's attempt to make a new connection. I don't know why
this is happening, but my standing advice for Informix connectivity
is for you to download and use Informix's own free type-4 driver.
It's better, faster and better supported than ours.

  • Black Screen - Setup Incomplete - Can't reload

So, my Passport screen works, I can see the screen reset, all the visuals work on startup, showing progress, etc.  When the phone turns on however, I get a black screen (it's on, just blank, black background). This occurred after an apparent software update using Link. All was working well, until that update. Wish I could tell you the version, as I now can't access anything on the phone with the black screen. When I press volume buttons, it shows volume visuals for increaseing/decreasing volume, when I take a screenshot, it also shows the usual message for saving to my images. but, nothing else works.  When I reconnect to Link and try a factory restore or reload, I get the Setup incomplete messages. I can't try Sachesi or anything else for this same setup incomplete error message.  Not sure what other options I have.  Already tried reload, factory restore, hard reset with volume buttons - always the same result - black screen, do not pass go.  When I try the update software option (even though it went through the update that caused all these problems), I then get an Unspecified error encountered [A:0x000000A2] message, if that helps. W...T...F...

Hi and Welcome to the Community! The most common thing to do after an update that results in issues is to perform an OS reload. Sometimes, the update processes have errors and such...with a reload often curing the issues. The official methods, which will be controlled as to what exact OS versions you are offered:http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-Functions-and/How-to-Reload-your-Blackberry10-O...Unfortunately, you've already tried those without success, which leads then to the unofficial methods, which are cleaner (and more forceful), and allow you to choose an OS version that perhaps your carrier (or whoever it is controlling your offers) has been slow to approve:http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...http://forums.crackberry.com/bb10-leaked-beta-os-f395/bb10-os-archive-943672/Of course, before you started any of this, hopefully you took a good backup via LINK, a manual copy of your Device Memory to your PC, and full documentation of your configuration (account credentials, added apps, configurations, etc.). Sometimes, restoring from a backup returns to the device the very corruption one needs to eliminate, and reconfiguring from scratch can resolve that. Good luck!

  • Safari crashes or hangs requiring unplugging power to my iMac desktop running OS 10.8.2. This doesn't happen with FireFox. Also while trying to recover my old files using Carbonite I get messages saying there is no space on my startup disk 1 TB?

After replacing my burnt out original hard drive in my iMac 24 inch desk top computer with 1 TB hard drive I've had repeated problems with Safari hanging/not responding. This has frozen my computer and required me to unplug the power cord and restart. It doesn't happen with FireFox. In addition, while trying to restore from Carbonite I've had it hang five or six times never completing the restore. When the technician replaced the hard drive he installed OC 10.8.2. When restoring I get repeated messages that there isn't enough room on my startup disk to continue the restore. This obviously isn't the case because I have far more storage space with a 1 TB hard drive. Any ideas what is going on and how I can prevent these two problems from continuing? Thanks.

You've got an  incompatible Logitech driver and java was incompletely uninstalled.
You may have a problem with the Wacom driver.
I don't know if fixing those things will help.
There also a few window server errors, but I don't know if they are causal.
If you can note the time of the hangs, that might help narrow it down in the logs.

  • OSX Server Hangs on Blue screen at startup

We have an Xserve Running 10.5.8.  We have been having strange issues for some weeks with client's logging in and their desktops being missing.  Last Friday I noticed that the backup was not running correctly and I had a student who had lost her work mysteriously too.  I decided to restart the server to see what would happen.  On restart I cannot log in to the server either remotely or locally because after the white apple with spinner screen the machine goes to a blue screen with no login window.  Services are up and running, I can view and use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager, and I can ssh into the server.  I have trawled the internet in search of answers but all to no avail.  There are some errors in the log but I am not familiar enough with these things to know which are significant to this problem.  To further complicate matters the OSX server disk is nowhere to be found, hasn't been seen since well before I arrived on campus.  I have ordered Snow Leopard for this machine but would like to get to the bottom of the issues.
I have booted into safe mode from ssh but this has made no change to the situation.  I am relatively new to comand line management of macs so please don't assume I know how to use it like an old pro.  I am learning rapidly.
    Thanks

  • Noob needs help using/managing large font collection in os10

Hope this is the correct forum for this question. I'm a os10 noob starting at a new, small startup design-oriented biz (6-7 macs) that needs to manage fonts - 100s, over a 1000. Other places I've worked used Font Reserve and I'm familiar with that program but I never knew if it came with os10 or you had to go buy it, and if you needed to buy a separate copy for each computer?
I'm trying to help get this biz set-up, but I know NOTHING about font usage/set-up in os10. I've always used ATM Deluxe4.6 (os9) and have over 2000 fonts nicely arranged in sets (took me an entire day, way back when). Would love to transfer these arranged sets into os10, if possible.
Is there a built-in font mgmt in os10? Is it any good for large collections? Is Font Reserve a good program for large font collections?
I don't even know where os10 stores fonts or the right questions to ask. Pls point me in the right direction!
    TIA

Fontbook is ok for dealing with a handful of fonts on an occasional basis, but for pro design work you should run, don't walk, to: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX/
FontExplorerX beats the pants of any other font management tool I've used on the mac after many years of ATM, Suitcase & Font Agent Pro. FEX looks and feels like an "iTunes for Fonts" - it's fast, stable, clean and simple to use and best of all for a small biz (like me) - it's FREE! :O
