Inconsistencies with -Xmx option
Hi,
sometimes when I run my code with the -Xmx550M option it runs to completion, other times I get the java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. How come? My code is very deterministic and will do the same thing each time it runs. No doubt about that. So is there some randomness related to when the garbage collector runs? If not, I can't see how my code doesn't behave the same way each time.
Any ideas?

I wrote it myself and the code is not that large and
one of the main goals of the program was to be
consistent and have reproducable results. Except for
this OOME thing, everything about the program is
repoducable.That doesn't really answer my question. The fact that sometimes one thing happens and sometimes another means there is variation. Now we know that there is variation in gc timing, etc. Perhaps you've managed to write a program that depends on particular behavior from the gc (even if by accident). If so, that's a bug and needs to be eliminated. Perhaps there is a bug in the VM. This is beyond unlikely, but it's possible.
If I were you, I would put output statements around all your conditional logic to make sure that it really truly is always doing the same thing every time.

number like 555 MB would lead to success 100% of the
time and/or 545 MB would give OOME 100% of the time.
That would be nice, but then when
n explaining/documenting it, I would hate to say that
"it can't run with only 545 MB of heap, it CAN run
n with 555 MB of heap, and for heap sizes in between
it may or may not run." That's not a very strong
sentence. :-(No, it isn't.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

When I attempt to send a text from the new iPad, a dialog box appears with the option to either sign in with Apple ID Password or Create New Account. I try signing in using my Apple ID password but IMessage informs me that email address cannot be verified because it is already in use ??? What am I doing wrong?

Error when creating index with parallel option on very large table
I am getting a
"7:15:52 AM ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kxfqupp_bad_cvl], [7940], [6], [0], [], [], [], []"
error when creating an index with parallel option. Which is strange because this has not been a problem until now. We just hit 60 million rows in a 45 column table, and I wonder if we've hit a bug.

As a test I removed the parallel option and several of the indexes were created with no problem, but many still threw the same error... Strange. Do I need a patch update of some kind?This is most certainly a bug.

Hello Everyone,
I would like to create SSRS single select dropdown list parameter (it is using MDX query in dataset) with "None" option at the top. Note: this parameter is dependent parameter and getting filtered based on the selection of another parameter.
How can I add hard-coded "None" text at the top of the parameter values? Can Union function help me to add this hard-coded value? The purpose is, when user selects None from the dropdown ignore the condition of the parameter from MDX query else
use the selected value in query condition.

In your scenario, you can achieve your requirement in report level other than in query. Add a Filter like:
Expression: =IIF(Parameters!Name.Value="None",1,Fields!Name.Value)
Operator:=
Value: =IIF(Parameters!Name.Value="None",1,Parameters!Name.Value)
In this case, report will ignore this parameter, and show all the records on the report when selecting “None” value. I have tested it on my local environment, the screenshots below are for you reference.

Can the Mac Terminal add a user, with all options desired, on a single line? If so, can I get an example of this single terminal line to work from?
ThanksThanks Drew! You have some great thoughts there. Perhaps I should provide a clearer environment of each high school(4). All classrooms have a lock down Windows environment. (There are no Macs any where in any classrooms.) The mini-tower will be the only Mac on each high school campus. we're in Dell country. The desktops are locked in such a way that only the ghosted/installed software on each hard drive works and no other software can be installed. USB sticks can't run any exe, jar, or other executable file. Even the other drives on the network can't run them. This has been setup to prevent students from bringing games into the environment and running them. Only the single classroom in each high school, where Web Tech is taught, has a ftp tool installed. Students cannot bring and use their own laptops either. So there really isn't any stray ftp activity happening. You cannot "ftp" out of the network! And there is only the one Mac available per campus. All this makes it certainly easier to maintain for sure. I am the only user in the school district they let run a personal laptop...mine has Ubuntu (tweaked). My knowledge of Linux has led them to assign this project to me. They are MS based entirely and so is their knowledge base.
I've got to teach the other 4 teachers how to manage the mini-tower. Basically it is this:
Start and stop Apache2,
Start and stop vsftp,
Add ftp users(students will only have directory: /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/studentlastname.firstname ) Students will not log on to the min- tower directly as any normal user would, but only through ftp. (I.E. no /home directory) ,
Remove/delete students as needed
(I'll pre-install cgi-bin scripts on these to keep it simpler on the other teachers and myself.)
With this in mind, you can see why a basic script or single command line to install these students would be great! I want to keep it simple to avoid mistakes the teachers might make adding users. Once I understand adding a user (in a terminal) better on a Mac, I may write a script to make it happen for them.
I'd also like to understand removing/deleting a student/user better to insure everything is gone when executed.

OBIEE 11g: Inconsistencies with Master-Detail events and Navigate to BI
Hi everyone,
I'm getting some pretty annoying inconsistencies with the Navigate to BI Content action as well as the Master-Detail events. Basically the main issue I get is that 90% of the time, the click does nothing.
It's a pretty simple setup, I am setting up bulb gauges to act like a fancy column selector. The bulb gauges are setup to pivot based on a Metric Type column. The goal is that if you click on "Metric 1" bulb a trend report should refresh to show Metric 1. If you click on the "Metric 2" bulb, the same trend report will show that metric.
Here's how I implemented it:
Dashboard Tab A -- Uses Navigate to BI Content
1) I have a prompt on Fiscal month in dashboard tab A.
2) I created the bulb gauge and put it in dashboard tab A
3) Setup the interaction on the bulb measure to navigate back to Dashboard Tab A.
3) Prompted the trend on Metric Type column and put it in dashboard tab A.
4) In theory, clicking on the bulb, should navigate back to the same tab and update the trend report appropriately
5) In reality, nothing happens.
6) The only way I can get the navigate to work is if I first change the value in the fiscal month prompt and click Go. Then I click on the bulb and the navigation will work ONCE. After that it's broken again.
Dashboard Tab B -- Use Master Detail -Events
1) Pretty much same situation as dashboard A, but instead of navigate to BI Content, I use the master-detail events.
2) Pretty much the same results. I cannot get it to consistently work, in fact the trick with the filter didn't do anything.
3) One thing I tried was cleared my browser history completely (Mozilla Firefox) and then launched the page. It work for about 5 clicks and then stopped.
Either way, neither of these are working properly for me.
Has anyone else had these issues?

Has anyone else had an issue with this?So someone explained to me that master-detail events only occur within a single report. They cannot be used to communicate across two different reports.
That is significantly less useful than I originally thought. I honestly that it was a method of communication for one report to update other target reports that are all listening on the same channel. That would have been a powerful feature. A single report refreshing other views in the same report is still useful, but not as much.
That being said, I still don't understand what the heck is going on with the navigate to BI content feature. I've been testing it out. It works with pivot tables and regular tables. But the moment I add a graph, gauge or even a "Filter" view into the dashboard page, the click stops working. Really really strange stuff. -

If the UTF8 NLS charset is being used with French, German ... characters in an Oracle database, then the size of the target column length should be set accordingly.

According to the Oracle documentation, column length semantics determine whether the length of a column is specified in bytes or in characters. You use BYTE to specify that the length is in bytes, and you use CHAR to specify that the length is in characters. CHAR length semantics is also known as codepoint length semantics.
Because some character sets require more than one byte for each character, a specification of 10 BYTE for a column might actually store less than 10 characters for certain character sets, but a 10 CHAR specification ensures that the column can store 10 characters, regardless of the character set.
You set the length semantics for an Oracle database using the NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS initialization parameter, and all VARCHAR2 and CHAR columns use the setting specified for this initialization parameter as the default. If this initialization parameter is not set, then the default setting is BYTE.

In my MacBook Pro(10.7.5), finder is crashing after logging in. It is showing crash report with Relaunch option, when i click on Relaunch option finder is working properly but i am unable to see Top bar(Apple logo, Date and Wifi etc... bar). Even in safari address bar, TextEdit not accepting any text means when type something not showing up and also i am unable operate any thing from keyboard. Plz help me…..
One thing that you can try is installing a 'fresh' version of OS X Lion. Boot into your Recovery partition (holding down the command and R keys whilst booting) and elect to install OS X from the Recovery screen. You need not erase your hard drive and you should not lose any of your data.
Oh, and just as a precaution, I would use Disk Utility, once you're in Recovery mode, to verify your hard drive before trying to install the OS again.

I have updated to Firefox 23 and it disabled my Java and Flash plugins. I then updated these to Flash 11.8.800.94 and Java to Version 7 Update 25. Now these are showing up on the plug in page but are showing "disabled" with no option to enable. How do I enable them to view content on the web.

However, when i closed and restarted the browser it returned back to the same settings...
