Inconsistent cross dissolves in FCE 3

hello
I'm editing a sequence with black slugs of about 4 secs between each short section of video (about 1 min sections). I'm doing this by right clicking on the edit and adding a cross dissolve. On some edits the cross dissolve is really short, while on others its a decent length. It doesn't seem to make any difference how long the adjoining clips are, and I can't edit the dissolve length in the editor. Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong here?!

I don't know whether you understand about the "handles" Piero mentioned?
To put it simply, you can't add a transition between 2 COMPLETE clips. You need to have cut off at least a second from the end of each clip where it "touches" the transition.

  • Cross  Dissolves - Inconsistent Behavior

    Hello excellent forum members,
I have a question about the inconsistent behavior of cross dissolves -- specifically removing cross dissolves. I find that occasionally (maybe 1 in 5 times) when I remove a dissolve between two photos, the appropriate time is not added back to the shot. For instance, if I remove a 20 frame dissolve, 10 frames should be added back to each of the two shots. Usually, that IS the case (i.e. the frames are added back to the photo as expected), but, occasionally it's not. Usually the correct time is added back to one photo, but not to the other. I think this is just an odd bug -- I'm wondering if others have experienced it, too. (It's also not a big deal to work around -- you just have to keep your eye on the shots in question when you're removing a dissolve and make sure you note whether or not the right time has been restored to the shot.)
    Thank you for your input...
    Diana

Actually, I have never had that much trouble with deleting a transition, But I, too, have used the delete instead of the revert option in the pst.
However, I have used the retore option for other reasons and it works perfectly...unless you are reverting a clip that has effects and titles added before hand.
That may cause you to do a bit more work and delete more than just the transition.

  • Creating cross-dissolve from still photo to video

    Hello all ...
I'm try to create a simple cross-dissolve between a black-and-white photo (imported into FCE as an RGB Photoshop file) and a color (1440x1080) video clip. My problem is that FCE will only insert the dissolve on the right (video) side of the edit, the result being that the photo abruptly goes to black, followed by a gradual fading-in of the video. This is not the effect I want – I'm hoping to create a smoother transition between the two. I suspect that I haven't saved the still photo in the correct format, but I can't seem to find any help in my various FCE books.
So: How do I apply the transition to both sides of the edit? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
    Alec

Tom, I figured it out. The audio for the video clip was overlapping the edit (i.e. it extended to the left, so that the video clip's audio ran under the still pic). When I got rid of the (easily replaced) audio, the regular cross-dissolve worked.
Now I just need to figure out how to make the transition last longer than 13 frames!
Thanks for your prompt responses ... I really appreciate it.
    Merry Christmas!

  • Cross dissolve problem - only works as fade in with graphics clips

I inserted three graphics clips with transitions (cross dissolve default) at the beginning of a sequence. The transitions only seem to work as fade-ins I have plenty of extra frames beyond the edit section of the clips. I tried to adjust the transitions in the transition editor - it shows the transition aligned to start at the edit, but won't allow mw to choose to center it on the edit or end on the edit.
Thanks for any help you can provide

Thank you - no, there seems to be a handle only on the left side of the edit (to the left of the transition - which sits only to the right of the edit). On the right side,(in the zone of hte transition) the cursor shows the symbol for the roll tool - r. Excuse my limited understanding of the interface and tools - I am just beginning to learn FCE.
I will be away from the workstation until tomorrow morning.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve

I have a couple of clips I want to add the default Cross Dissolve between. The first clip is 04;04 sec., and the other clip is 04;12 sec. When I add the dissolve between them, it only comes in at a duration 00;01; while, when I add the same dissolve to the beginning or end of a clip, it has a duration of 01;00 (which is what I want between the clips.)
Since I have enough footage on each clip (right?), shouldn't the default dissolve be applied at 01;00?
(P.S. This same thing is happening at many places along the timeline.)
    Thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's because both clips must have some "unused" material to "build" the transition itself.
    We call this "handles".
To get a 1 second transition, the outcoming (the first one) and incoming (the second one) clips must have at least 15 frames of unused material: 15 frames after the out point of outcoming and 15 frame before the in point of incoming one. This is related to the fact that FCE keep the same sequence's duration with or without transition.(iMovie decrease the duration of your movie when you insert a transition).
Instead of cuting your clips as suggested earlier, use the ripple tool (RR) and adjust the clips.

  • Very strange - using cross dissolve transition between a series of stills

New to FCP - been using FCE for a couple of years now.
I have a bunch of stills that I animate aka the Ken Burns effect. After I add keyframes at beginning and the end of the clip, I then add a transition (I use transitions on almost every picture). For some strange reason, when I use a cross dissolve and render it, the picture shakes a bit when I play it. It's not the screen that shakes, it's just the picture in the canvas and it only shakes when the transition plays. After the transition, the picture plays just fine. Very strange. Never happened in FCE and only happens with cross dissolve.
    Any ideas? thanks.

When I render the picture and transition, I hit Option R which renders everything - doesn't take too long because I render after each change. Not moving keyframes out which actually creates another problem that the movement doesn't start immediately but that's not what I'm talking about here.
I've been doing this awhile and it's never seen this before. Using a new scanner (Canon) and just bought Adobe CS3 Design that I use to edit the pix but can't believe either of those would be a problem. Has anyone heard of a problem with FCP after installing an Adobe product?
    Thanks for the suggestions anyway

  • Automating Cross Dissolve Transitions

I am working on a slide show movie in Final Cut Express from over 150 still images. Is there a way to automate adding a Cross Dissolve transition between each of the stills?
Any help on the issue would be appreciated.

I'm feeling I might be in trouble. I am using FCE (Express) which does not alow one to change default transition. I work extensively with still images, animating. I need to be able to apply a particular cross dissolve length to a group of stills. This varies according to the effect I want. My work does not stick to a fixed frame rate.

  • Shaky cross-dissolves

    Hello all,
I've got a a sequence full of still pictures stacked on top of each other, all linked with cross-dissolves (to show the chonology of a person's life at various stages). The pictures all stay on screen until, one at a time, they dissolve into the replacement picture.
When I play it back in the Canvas, there is a lot of shaking going on as the dissolves go in and out.
Is this just a visual thing in the Canvas, or can I expect it to show up when I burn a DVD (using iDVD)?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi,
    I'm a newbie to fce.
I am having the same problem as Andrew. When I use a cross dissolve transition, the outgoing video begins to "jitter" or "shake" during the transition. I am using a series of still images and a "ken burns effect". The jitter does not occur during the effect pan/zoom, only during the transition and only the outgoing video.
I've noticed the same jitter when using a fade to black transition as well.
Also, I notice quite a few jagged artifacts during the transitions as well. It is as if fce is dropping a field and duplicating the remaining field.
I did not have this problem with iMovie 6 HD.
I've burned a DVD and viewed on a television and get the same result.
    Thanks,

  • Cross dissolve driving me crazy

I am still pretty new to fce and i am having a terrible time with a cross disolve transition. It keeps adding clips into the dissolve that have already been edited out. I know about handles but not how make or edit them can some one please help me?

when choosing your edit point at the beginning of the clip, backtrack 15 frames (if you're in NTSC-land) and that will give you the frame where the cross dissolve (if using half a second transition) starts.
This is because final cut uses these frames to make the transition along with the last 15 frames of the end of the outgoing clip.
You can make the transition shorter or longer of course, by double clicking the transition on the timeline.

  • Lots of handles, no cross dissolve

I'm an FCE newbie. Why is it on a few clips I'm unable to apply a transition. I've got at least 10-15 seconds of "handles" on both clips that I'm trying to join. But when I try to apply a cross dissolve I get an x on the cross dissolve icon. The x only shows up on one side when I move the icon back and forth.
    Thanks video gods.

when I was switching from iMovie to FCE I made two mistakes/miss the concept of FCE how it handles disolves.... :
    a) both clips have to be in the same track.. you can not add a disolve to two clips on two tracks.. (that sounds too basic, but.. )
    b) iM grabs 'flesh' for a disolve automatically, adding a disolve to two clips shortens the total project length - not so in FCE: in the preview window you have to set in/out points (=> which leaves some unused material, you need for the disolve..); then add clip to timeline; then add disolve (=if 'flesh' is 2sec, you can not add a 6sec disolve...).
as said, this sounds too basic to FC pros, but when you're used to other, more consumer-ish editor, you have to learn that..

  • Unable to insert cross dissolve?

I am trying to insert the cross dissolve video transition in between two video clips and FCE is not allowing this. I get a small black "x" underneath the mouse cursor when trying to do this. Why is FCE not allowing a video transition insert in between these two clips? I made sure both clips were the same resolution.

This is almost certainly because you don't have adequate media handles, portions of your clip outside the section you're using in your Timeline.
    Here's a good explanation:

  • Transition/Cross Dissolve

OK...new to FCE, but have edited on a PC. I'm trying to put a cross dissolve between 2 pieces of video. I have successfully done it with other bits of video.
The videos are long enough, I have put the videos right next to each other ( even tried overlapping them), put the playhead where the join is, opened Effects in the Browser window, clicked and dragged down the onto the join the Cross Dissolve...but it doesn't appear to be there on the timeline. I've tired lots of different ways of doing this..but still no luck..is there some simple thing I am not doing?

  • Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.
    Patrick

    Thanks for trying...
Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.
Are any of these clips nested?
    Nope.
    Thanks for trying though.

  • Error: Unable to Load "Cross Dissolve"

I'm trying to create a QuickTime of a video project that I'm working on, and every time I try to export I get an error that FCP was unable to load the cross dissolve video transition. This is Final Cut Pro 6.0.3, and the project contains HDV, DV and DVCPro 50 footage, with the sequence settings for HDV (HDV 720p30 - DVCPro HD Codec). This project has been exported successfully before, in fact once just 2 hours prior to the first occurrence of this error (which was 2 days ago). Ever since the first occurrence, I have been unable to export it. Has anyone had this problem, or a problem similar to this? Does anyone know of any work-arounds or solutions? Thanks.

The usual cause for this is that the database has become corrupted - or one or more key files was somehow deleted. Take a look at the application log and see if there is a more detailed message. Unfortunately, if the data has been corrupted, you will have to recover from backup, or rebuild your cube.To get the database started, you can go into the database directory and delete the *.ind, *.pag, *.tct, *.ind and *.esm files. This will allow the app to start, but the data will be GONE - you will HAVE to reload and calc it, or restore from backup.Regards,Jade--------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity [email protected]

  • Cross Dissolve transition does not work after cutting the tails of both ends.

I used to apply the Cross Dissolve video transition a while ago and never had any problems. My Cross Dissolve is not working for whatever reason. I usually split parts of the movie using the razor tool and cut the tail of both parts I just split, than apply the Cross Dissolve, but it does not work at all. I dont know if I am doing something wrong here, I need your help if you can help me with that. I have also tried to apply Film Dissolve but I have the same problem.
    Thank you very much!!
    Renata

I am trying to put together a recruiting video. I was out recording a bunch of people talking about the organization, when I am working with something like this I usually try to shorten the 3 or 5 minute clip I have from one person and just connect the parts of the clip that need to be on the screen, that requires several cuts during the clip and merge the good parts together using the cross dissolve. It is very simple and I have done several times, but for whatever reason during certain parts of the clip when applied will not work. The clips are usually 1 to 3 minutes long and I need to extract the good parts making no more than 1 minute for each peson talking.
    Thanks!
