Inconsistent DHCP leases while using WRVS4400N as Wireless Access Point

I have a small home network that is made up of a Windows 2003 server connected directly to my WRVS4400N. The DHCP server is disable in the WRVS4400N and all DHCP and DNS services are being provided by the 2003 server. My WPSM54G print server has no problem obtaining an IP address but my other 3 non-Linksys wireless computers are timing out during the IP request process. All 3 computers have a good wireless connection and will work fine if I configure them for a static IP address but I would rather use DHCP if at all possible. Do you have any information that could help me clear up this problem. I have installed the latest firmware which is version 1.01.03 but this has not helped the situation.

have you tried to direct connect your PCs to the router just like your server and check if it can obtain and IP?
try changing wireless settings from the router [SSID and CHANNEL]
enable WPA as well
are they able to obtain an IP from a diff wireless network?

How can I set up a guest access point with a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme? I am using a Telus router with the Time Capsule used as a wireless access point (bridge mode). I don't want the guest access point to have access to my network.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

  • Using routers as wireless access point

    Hello,
i am thinking of buying Linksys x2000 , WAG160N or any other you suggest to use as a wireless access point. Is it possible?
My setup is : I get my internet from my neighbor by ethernet cable from his router. My house is two-storied and ethernet cable comes to top left corner of first floor and the devices(two notebook) are on the bottom right corner at the second floor , insulation greatly reduces the signal strength.
    Thank you.

You can use any other routers, do not use X2000 or WAG models.  I think they get Internet from an RJ11 connection.  Use an Access Point.  WAP series.

  • Can I use iMac as wireless access point?

My network equipment: ADSL modem (which has no integrated wireless) with Buffalo AirStation (802.11b) wireless access point
I have had a reasonably stable broadband situation for a long time (hence the ancient equipment!) and have been able to access the internet via my ADSL modem/ethernet router using ethernet wires from my iMac G5, and two desktop PCs running Linux and Windows. I have also been able to access via the wireless Buffalo Airstation on various laptops over the years. My wife's brand new MacBook has been connecting wirelessly for a couple of weeks.
    Until last night...
Then the AirPort signal dropped to zero and a neighbour's network was suggested as the network I need. I looked at the Buffalo Airstation and there was a flashing red light (and flashing green ones as well). Being an experienced chap I turned it off and turned it back on! For about five minutes the Airport signal was back. Then it disappeared with flashing lights as before. Repeated a few times with no change...
I don't know if the problem is related to the neighbour's wireless signal or not but I decided that it could be the AirStation getting flaky so I tried creating a network on the iMac with a view to sharing its wired connection.
I can log on to this iMac network from the MacBook and I have changed the Systems Preferences to share the connection on the iMac but the MacBook says it is not connected to the internet. Anyone got any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Should I be entering the ADSL modem router in the internet connection details (which is what I have done) or should I be entering something else?
Is what I am trying to do even possible? I haven't found any exact parallels in the documentation or the forums...
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Does the Buffalo AirStation allow you to change the channel being used?
You can share an Internet connection over Ethernet to other computers using Airport. You set it up in System Preferences Sharing pane Internet tab (if using Tiger). On the MacBook, you should just use the default +Configure Using DHCP+ setting. Be sure you clicked to Start the sharing on the iMac. On the MacBook, be sure you select the wireless network that is the iMac's name.

  • Using Mac as Wireless Access point

If i set up the MAC to be a Wireless Access point, via the Sharing option in System Preferences, it works fine if i am trying to connect a PC, other MAC or iPhone to the internet, but devices such as Nintendo DS or Kindle fail (these devices work OK on other wireless networks) to connect they recognise the Wireless network OK but fail to connect and i have tried the basic configuration with no security and it still fails.
What am i doing wrong please?
    Thx

  • Using router as wireless access point

I have connected two routers to my BT broadband Hub (via ethernet) in order to create one big Wirless LAN across the house. Unfortunately, the routers have simply created independent wireless lans which I need to log into separately as I move around the house. Any idea how I edit the routers so that they all use the same user ID and Password....and effectively act as one integrated wireless network, so that i can connect to them as I move between them seamlessly. Thanks.....

  • Setting up WRVS4400N for switch & wireless access point

Howdy, first post here.  What is the proper way to configure this device to act as a switch and wireless access point so I can connect it to a switch with router upstream?  I have a DLink router that was easy:  disable UPnP, disable DHCP, set an IP/Subnet, and it worked.
My main router has a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0 but in the WRVS4400N setup screen I only get a list box with a limited number of masks, all of which are 255.255.255.x.  Is there any way to specify the 240?

No. You cannot use a subnet mask larger then 255.255.255.0 on Linksys routers. They are only built to handle 255.255.255.0 and smaller. I guess they consider a LAN which requires a larger subnet, i.e. expects to run more then 253 networked devices requires a larger router.
The only thing you can do is to choose 255.255.255.0 and to pick an IP address which matches the IP address from which you expect to do the usual configuration work. If you use 10.0.0.0/255.255.240.0 but the computers which have to configure the router are all in 10.0.1.0/255.255.255.0 you can use that subnet. This works with computers even if they have a different subnet mask.
Of course, you can set any IP address you want, even one completely outside your normal LAN in order to "hide" the web interface from the normal LAN operation. The IP address of the router in your setup is irrelevant for the switching and wireless access. Both operate on ethernet/MAC addresses and the IP address of the router does not play any role there. If you use the 10 subnet mentioned before you could as well leave the router at 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0. Whenever you have to access the web interface of the router you must temporarily set a static IP address inside 192.168.1.* on the computer...

  • An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point"

    Hi,
I've been using wireless access for a year and never had a problem connecting.
But starting yesterday I get a +*An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point", Please try again.+* Message.
I have 2 Mac's and have no problem connecting with the other one. It’s just the IMac.
I tried everything including resetting router, changing password, adding a $ to the password, accessing without password, deleting the whole air port and create a new one, but still getting the same message.
I might need to add, while I was working with the IMac I didn’t use wireless for a few hours, but when I got back to my browser I noticed that I was connected to a different wireless service. (FONFREEINTERNET if it matters) I have no idea why, since I didn’t change it.
Anyways, I tried to switch back to my access point, but it wouldn’t let me. It’ll just give me the +*An Error Occurred while trying to join "my wireless access point", Please try again.+* Message.
Funny is when I use the FONFREEINTERNET access point the internet seems to work fine.
I could look up Google without a problem, but when I tried to connect to Facebook for example it won’t let me. Instead a FONFREEINTERNET page will pop up with some options on how to pay! (by minute/or day/or week…)
I get the strange feeling that they planted some kind of bug/virus!!!
I don’t know what else to do.
Anyone knows that problem? What can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    I researched on FONFREEINTERNET, there’s a spot close to my house/guess that’s the one I used…
http://maps.fon.com/ ZIP CODE 904-0113 and you’ll see a coffee pod, which is about 2 minutes walk from my house.

    Hello Tesserax,
I get the same error message again...
I tried the 3 suggested steps again, but unfortunately it did not work.
After a Restart, Sleep or just the awaking from Screensaver mode I’m disconnected from my wireless Network anymore.
Even if the Computer was asleep for just a second!
I am able to fix the problem temporarily with Network Preferences → Assist me → Diagnostics
Choose Airport → Choose network → Enter Password (Even if I check safe password it’ll ask me every time) → and than usually all lights on the left menu switch from red to green and I get the popup message “A Network Change has been detected. Your Internet seems to work fine.” (similar - I’m at work and don’t remember exactly)
And it works fine…until the screensaver comes on or it sleeps again
I have the Problem with my IMac and Mini but the IMac at least remembers my password…
    Any Ideas
I’m connected through a Buffalo WZR2-G300N wireless router

  • Using WRT54GR as a Wireless Access Point only

I have a WRT610N as my main router. I want to use an existing WRT54GR purely as a wireless access point and ethernet switch. Any suggestions on how best to do that so I can still access the WRT54GR to make configuration changes? Right now I have the network functionality working by simply not using the Internet port on the WRT54G but by going to 192.168.1.1 I can only get to the WRT610N.

    (Restarting this thread).
I made the change you suggested and statically assigned 192.168.1.200 to the WRT54GR. I can reliably access it through this IP address. I connected it to the rest of my network by using one of the 4 switch ports (not the Internet port). I disabled DHCP on it and configured the Wireless settings to be the same (same SSID and Security Settings) as my other wireless router.
What I'm finding is that devices in my house won't assoicate with it. I tried changing the SSID to a different value; devices were able to see the new SSID but when I entered the pasword they told me that no DHCP server could be detected. A wired device that I plugged into another of the 4 switch ports on the WRT54GR was able to pick up an IP address from the main router just fine so I know that basic connectivity is OK.
To achieve what I want (i.e. the WRT54GR just acts as a wireless base station to extend wireless coverage in the house), do I need to connect the WRT54GR to the rest of the network using the Internet port rather than a switch port? If so, what configuration settings do I need to set up so that all the devices can get their IP address from the main router?

  • 1242AG Wireless Access Point - Cannot Get DHCP IP for BVI1 interface - Multiple SSIDs...

    Hello,
I am attempting to set up three Cisco 1242AG Wireless Access Points with multiple SSID's. I used the web interface and directions online to set up the two networks I want and at least one of the networks work wirelessly.
    However, I have two problems:
The first, which is the most important, is that the "management" interface, BVI1, doesn't get an ip address from our DHCP server. I set the VLAN 60 (which you'll see in the documenation below) to be the native VLAN on the device as well as on the switch that the device is connected to as well as other settings in the configeration file below. Because of this, I can only manage the device via the console port which would be a huge pain once all of the devices are mounted.
The second problem is that I am not sure how to get both wireless networks broadcasting their SSID's. I have to manually type in the SSID for the second wireless network I have which I would prefer I don't have to. Anyway I can enable broadcasting on all of the SSID's?
    Thank you for your time.

    Christopher Koeber

I am using a third party DHCP server which is our Windows Domain Controller. I have the ip helper-address set for the native vlan of the Access Point through a layer 3 distribution switch (a Catalyst 4506) that the current switch connects to.
I didn't see any event on the logs for the AP.
Let me know if I need to do something else.
    Thanks.

  • Can I use my AirPort as a wireless access point?

Can I use my AirPort as a wireless access point?  Can I disable DHCP?  How?  I have model A1143.

Can I use my AirPort as a wireless access point?
Yes, if it connects to your main router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. Connect the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the main router to the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Extreme.
    Can I disable DHCP
Configure the AirPort to operate in Bridge Mode. That will turn off both DHCP and NAT services. If you are using the setup utility on a recent version of the Mac or iPhone/iPad, the utility will automatically set up the AirPort for you in Bridge Mode when it detects another router on the network.
    How?
This will depend on what operating system you have your Mac or PC, or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad for the setup. Let us know on that.
    I have model A1143.
This model would be anywhere from 6 to 8 years old depending on when it was originally sold.  Please keep in mind that the useful life.....on average.....for a wireless router designed for home use is about 5 years.

  • Using the Aiport Express as a Wireless Access Point on Windows XP

I would like to use my airport express as a wireless access point so that it will connect wirelessly to my router and via an Ethernet cable to my laptop that does not have a wireless card. Also, I have a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, so I can't install the airport express software. I do have another computer in which I am able to set things up on, but ultimately I would like to use the Ethernet port on the airport express as a DHCP device that once configured it will automatically connect to my laptop even after powering off and on any machine with DHCP. I believe that this can be done - but correct me if I am wrong.
So far, I have been able to get the airport express to connect to my router, but I can't seem to get the intenet connection on my laptop. Can someone help? Does the software have to be installed to work even after it is configured?
    Thanks!

I have successfully gotten my AX to connect to my wireless router via the wireless client mode, but I can't seem to get the network connection to come out the either net jack of the AX.
Unfortunately, the wireless client mode will not activate the Ethernet port. The purpose of this mode is to connect to an existing wireless network as a client (just like any other device connecting to the network) and be able to either/or stream iTunes or share a USB printer.
The only mode where the Ethernet port is enabled, would be to configure the AX as either a relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). But, unfortunately, your Belkin wireless router may not be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Again, the only Belkin routers, that I'm aware of that are compatible are the F5D7230-4 & F5D7130.

  • Can I disable my Verizon Fios Router Wireless radio, connect it to a switch and use my airport express as my wireless access point connected to an in wall ethernet port?

Here's the deal.  I have a Verizon Fios MI424WR router.  My house has CAT5 throughout the house.  The media panel is located in the garage.  I want to take the Verizon Fios Router and cannot it in the media panel so I can connect a switch to it, that way, all my CAT5 can fire throughout the house. Verizon being Verizon decided to connect the router directly in the office.
Can I go this route (Router in media panel, switch cross connect to it) and use Airport Express, connected to one of the in-wall CAT5 ports in my house and then set it up as my wireless access point to provide wifi to my portable devices (iPad, iPhone, Macbook)?  Is this possible? Will Airport Express comminicate with my verizon router via ethernet in-wall? Do I have to turn off the wireless radio in the Verizon router?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is right, by hard wired I was just making clear wired vs wireless attachment.  AirPort family of devices will only act in a repeater mode with their own family members, not FiOS routers.  they have to be wired to work.
There are some useful docs you can download from Apple, Support, Manuals, Peripherals, AirPort (just follow thos links from the Support button on the top bar):
    Apple AirPort Networks
    Designing AirPort Networks
    AirPort Express Setup Guide
The last has a diagram of what you are trying to do, though without the house wiring, etc., but the basic principle.

  • Using WRT160N as a wireless access point from TP-WR941N

    Hi,
I have a TP-WR941N router connected to the internet. I recently bought a WRT160n in the hope that I will be able to use it as an access point to extend the wireless range.
Essentially, I have the router and modem in one apartment, but need to be able to access the internet from another. The setup would look something like this:
    |||===Apartment 2======================|||========= Apartment 1 ==================|||
    |||  [Computer] )))))     ((((( [TP-WR941N] )))))    |||     (((((      [WRT160n]     )))))  (((((     [Computer]     |||
    |||  [Modem]----------------------+    |                         |||                                                                                        |||
    |||  [Computer]-----------------------+                        |||                                                                                        |||
    |||==================================|||======================================|||
Is this possible? Do I need to use custom firmware or will the WRT160n work with the supplied firmware? What would I need to set up?

WRT160N router can not communicate with another router on a wireless connection.
You will need to run cable between both the routers.
I think you can try third party firmware.

  • Can I use this as a wireless access point for my network

can I use this as a wireless access point for my network

    umm... use what?
A Time Capsule? Sure. It's just like many other wireless base stations. It can run in either bridge or route mode - in bridge mode it's just like an access point linking the wired and wireless networks together.
