Inconsistent Flash 10 Viewing in Snow Leopard...

Hi all,
This may end up being old hat for some, but I thought I would share a quick finding that was causing some definite viewing inconsistencies in the flash player on various sites; in particular the Adobe Store site! First for some facts:
I am running Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and Safari 4.0.4 with the 10.0.32.18 player
I recently purchased a new iMac and decided to create a new account for setup and app installations, but migrated other user accounts from a previous Tiger installation.
I have been able to view flawlessly various sites that included flash content on the setup account, but have had flaky results on the same sites from the migrated accounts.
The migrated accounts were using the same system plug-ins under Safari as the setup account.
The permissions were repaired and verified.
Admin and non-admin accounts (that were not the setup account) were experiencing the same flash viewing problems.
KEY FACT: I noticed that the common characteristic of the problem sites was that flash was having problems displaying various kinds of text in the browser and was not having issues playing video content.
After some deep comparisons of the setup account vs. the other problem accounts, I noticed that the setup account was using 100% /Library/Fonts and had nothing located in the /{usr home}/Library/Fonts whereas the problem accounts had "migrated" some /{usr home}/Library/Fonts over with them and they were pretty old at that. I moved them out of the local library location temporarily and forced the usage of the newer /Library/Fonts and the sites were happy; especially the Adobe Store.
I know that there are lot of variables that can cause display issues, but I just wanted to get this one out there because I know many are experiencing sporadic problems and are expecting it to be the player itself, but in this case it wasn't. With these continued OS and product releases, we are collecting more and more cruft with each upgrade and this one finally caught up with me!  Hope it helps.
Marc

I didn't understand half of what you wrote, but apparently that doesn't matter.  I've been having extremely annoying issues with flash based video players for a few months, and no amount of updating has helped.  I took your advice and deleted the migrated fonts from my home folder and lo-and behold, the problem is gone!  I have no idea why, but I'm so thankful!  THANK YOU!
More details:  YouTube's video player would play videos, but the buttons of the player would disappear.  Any time text appeared over the video, like with comments and the like, the boxes would be empty.  Some fringe players wouldn't work at all.  Now? Problem, solved.

Open "Java Preferences" either from spotlight or your utilities folder...it's probably going to say you need to install a java runtime. Then just click install!

  • How to install (using usb flash drive) os x snow leopard on 10.5?

i have a version 10.5 (leopard), but i would like to install snow leopard (10.6). i tried using bootable usb flash drive using the "utility drive". However, it did not quite work as i expected. Does anyone know how to use bootable usb flash drive to install snow leopard on leopard?

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Leopard installer DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
    Insert the USB flash drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
Release the key when the boot manager screen appears.
Select the icon of the USB flash drive and click on the arrow button below the icon.
When the installer finishes loading follow the onscreen instructions.

  • Flash CS4 crashing with Snow Leopard - help!!

I just installed Snow Leopard and now my Flash CS4 will not stay open. It crashes. All software updates are up to date. Any suggestions. please help. I have Flash work to do

    I found the fix.
It's a pain. It's a font thing issue. Move all your fonts to your desktop or some external drive. Launch Flash and it should work. Now, if you want your fonts put them back but do only a little at a time, quiting and relaunching Flash every time you put fonts back to find the font that's causing the problem.
When you find the font that causes the issue, trash it.

  • Safari and Flash after updating to Snow Leopard

After updating to Snow Leopard, Safari will no longer display any flash content. I have tried reinstalling flash as well as uninstalling/reinstalling. Firefox works correctly so I know I do have the correct flash installed. Any advice? Thanks.

I have a similar problem. The rendering is wrong after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.
The 10.6.1 doesn't solve the problem.
The rendering problem is on Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
I've tried to uninstall Flash using the Adobe uninstaller and re-install.
    It doesn't solve the problem.
On my MacBook Air, I've updated to Snow Leopard, and no problem. Flash is working correctly.

  • Flash in Safari on Snow Leopard is awfully slow

I've seen threads on this before but no one seem to offer neither any solution (I don't find disabling flash to be a solution).
Flash on Leopard was running fine - more than fine, I don't think I ever had any single issue with it. After migrating to SL any flash bigger than a regular sized ad makes it seem that I have intel 286 inside my laptop. FPS rate is definitely low - video on hulu in their pop-up window stretched to half of the screen are all choppy. I think that even first generation MB Air was doing a better job. Even sites like mini.com don't run smooth anymore.
I understand that this has to do with FlashPlayer plugin for Safari (btw, mine is the latest 10.0.32). Why wasn't this happening in 10.5? Is it because Safari is running in 64-bit mode?
I think blaming Adobe in this case like some threads resort to is not really a good answer. The way I see it - it's Apple's responsibility to delivery their customers the best experience with their products and that includes Safari.
I hope Apple can push Adobe to fix the issue or do whatever needs to be done to resolve it. And I hope it does it soon.

    HI,
*"I understand that this has to do with FlashPlayer plugin for Safari (btw, mine is the latest 10.0.32). Why wasn't this happening in 10.5? Is it because Safari is running in 64-bit mode? "*
    Run Safari in 32-bit mode.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click Get Info.
In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle where you see: General
Select: Open in 32-bit mode and close the Get Info window and restart your Mac.
Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling a *fresh copy* of the Flash player plugin helps.
    Go here:
How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in
When you are finished uninstalling the old Flash plugin, go here and install a fresh copy
of Flash Player plugin.

As with any software installation, repair disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Need a previous version of Flash 10 for mac (snow leopard)

For some reason the unified player 1.6.4 is not working properly, when I use it on a specific site (the site is confirmed working for everyone else). The player plays for a few seconds, then turn black, and audio continues to go. This worked on this computer before but last week I upgraded flash to the latest version.
I need any previous version of flash 10.1 that has flash unified player 1.6.3 or less. Perhaps Flash 10.0 would suffice as well.
    Thanks

Hi, glad you have your site working. Now on the ESPN3.com site, I would read over these system requirements carefully. The FAQ appear to be very helpful. Also there is contact info if after trying all they suggest.

  • Flash Log Outs with Snow Leopard

Getting a ton flash log -outs. MIddle of doing something and computer just logs out.
Never seen this before in 6 years on Macs. Thought it was spaces, but happens with it disables. Have no idea what it could be.

Had my first one of these today. Fortunately didn't lose anything despite having many open applications. I was using Word and Excel 2004 and playing music through iTunes Airtunes. Other apps open included: Pages, Mail, Safari, NetNewsWire, Omnifocus, Omnioutliner, Textedit, Preview, Nottingham, Quicktime 7.
The tipping point seemed to be opening iMovie 09 and trying to adjust the white balance in some HD footage. The preview would reflect the change for a moment then return to the original; I kep trying then iMovie hung. Then Excel declared that autosave had been disable due to some problem. Seconds later the screen went blue and I was returned to the log in screen.
Perhaps my experience will help someone find out the reason?

  • CS5 Select Tool crash Flash on Snow Leopard

I can't select anything in a tool windows. With one fla opened, i select "ESSENTIAL" in workspace, the interface, turn on, but when i select a draw tool orchange any preference on Flash CS5 Trial on Snow Leopard, the flash allways crash and close without message. The image show the tools "closed" and the erro in Apple System.
    Anyone could help me?

    Hi,
If you create a new user account on that machine and login as that user, does Flash still crash?  A new user would have different preferences, fonts, etc. which could help narrow down the cause of the crash.
    Thanks,

  • Re: SeaMonkey Snow Leopard Flash compatibility

    System: OS X.6.8 Snow Leopard
    Browser: SeaMonkey 2.25
Flash Player: currently installed is version 10.3.183.86
The Adobe Flash Player page on compatibility by operating system and latest version of Flash Player

    but not SeaMonkey.
What is the latest version of Flash compatible with both Snow Leopard and with SeaMonkey???

Mike, thanks.  I see that on some of your other posts you recommended a clean install, deleting a couple files.  Do you think it wise I clean and then install Flash 12?
Unless you experience trouble with a regular install, it isn't necessary... more thorough, yes, and it doesn't take much longer, but it's not a necessity.

  • Failure to install on snow leopard, mountain lion

I have a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB SDRAM. On certain U-tube and other videos, but not all, I get a message that says I need to install the new Flash player. When I go to the link provided, or directly to the Adobe web site, and install the Flash player, I continue to get the message telling me I need a new flash player.
When I run the Adobe help for Flash, I get a blank box where I should see my version of flash and my operating system. When I repeatedly run the Flash uninstall program for Snow Leopard, and reinstall Flash, the result is the same.
I get the same result for Mountain Lion.

    Your plugins are probably broken...
Download the offline installer here: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac /install_flash_player_11_osx.dmg
    Quit your browser
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Internet Plugins
Trash the Flash Player.plugin file from there
    Go to: Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Flash Player folder (the whole folder)
    Empty the trash
    Reboot
Mount the DMG and run the installer.

  • Does ARD Admin 3.6.x work with Snow Leopard Clients

Our school would like to make a volume purchase of ARD, which is only available for Mountain Lion/Lion. At present, we are using Snow Leopard on all our computers. If we upgrade the teachers' computers to Mountain LIon and give them ARD 3.6.x, will they be able to view/administer Snow Leopard clients? It would be great to hear from someone who has done this in a school setting.
If anyone involved with ARD support is listening, it would be nice to see an ARD admin versus ARD client compatibility table in the specifications for this very useful product.

The current release of the ARD adminstrator application works fine with my Snow Leopard clients which have the 3.5.3 client, though I only have a few and my use is pretty modest. You may get feedback from others who use ARD with a larger client base.
    Regards.

After updating to snow leopard and trying to delete mackeeper, Flash player is being blocked and will not allow me to view utubes. Can anyone help?

Here are instructions for eradicating MacKeeper - you may need to re-install it to uninstall it fully:

Regarding Flash - there are many reports on here that v13.x isn't working for a lot of people. distractme in the following thread posted instructions on how to install the previous version, which should work whilst Adobe work on a fix:

    1)  Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) is a full featured app that can be downloaded from Intuit for $15 and will work with your data file if you are using Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 (if you version is earlier, let me know for more instructions on easy conversion):
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
    2) Partition your hard drive, or add an external hard drive and install Mavericks there and "dual-boot" to operate your music programs in Snow Leopard and experiment with them in Mavericks.
DO NOT install Mavericks over Snow Leopard!
