Inconsistent home button

Hello. I just got my ipod touch 4th gen. 2 weeks ago from best buy. I've noticed that the home button inconsistently responds to presses. Sometime it doesn't wake the device up and I have to press it again or sometimes it takes pressing it a few times. Also, during multi-tasking it will occasionally (maybe 1 out of 6 times or so) react differently than it's suppose to (e.g., one press gives recent apps used instead of the home screen; two presses goes right to the home screen instead of recent apps; sometimes nothing happens).
So, I researched some and found others having similar problems and there are some you tube videos of how to fix it and I tried one technique but the problem still occurs. Some recommend taking it back to best buy before the 30 period expires (i.e., hardware issue) but others think it's a operating system problem and that apple will have a fix in the next update.
What would some of you'all recommend I do. I would hate to return it because of all my settings and I also have the Zagg protective film on it.
thanks for any help/info.

I would say your Home button switch is defective. I have a 32G like yours I bought at BB and it works fine. Get it replaced/fixed.

  • My home button is inconsistent - Warranty?

My iPod is extremely inconsistent with its home button. For the past few weeks my button has been playing up and is extremely unresponsive. If I pressed it, nothing came up until I continued to press it at least 10 times. However recently its gone abit better as it sometimes goes back to normal and works fine, but other times it doesn't response. I've still got warranty, so will it still be able to go for repair? I'm just worried that they'll dismiss my iPod because it sometimes work and is able to turn on, yet other times it really isn't working.

    See if this Helps
You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the iPod Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... (But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the iPod On...

  • OS 4.0: HOME button acting weird and inconsistently since updating

The new double click for multitasking is not working properly for me - sometimes I get the new multitasking bar; but most of the time I don't. Sometimes I'll get it with just one click, other times after clicking THREE times?!! Its so annoying. I'm on a 3G 32gb Touch and I updated with no problems at all; but everytime I double click the Home button I just get the search feature coming up instead - prior to updating I had the Home button set to get me there via a double click, but I've attempted to change that setting and I've noticed that the option to customise the Home button click function has been removed?!! Basically, multitasking is a lottery as far as my Home button is concerned, I have to keep trying different Home click combos to get it to appear and I'm regretting updating at all.
    Please help!

Well that was a waste of time.

  • My home button only works occasionally when the iPod is llocked, and not at all when unlocked. How can I fix this?

I just got this iPod 36 hours ago, and it is already broken. I'm really frustrated because this is the fifth time a replacement device has broken right out of the box, and I have to reboot to switch between apps. once i get in an app, I'm stuck there. I think it's a software issue, because the home button works inconsistently when the device is locked. Please help ASAP!

    Hello,
I am currently an owner of an Ipod Touch 4th generation. I see you are having problems with your Ipod Touch, so I will try to find a solution to your problem.
Hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10sec. or until Apple logo appears (Nothing will be lost, this is just a "Hard Reset")
    Hope that helps!
If none of the above solutions work, can you please respond back ASAP as I will try to find another solution to your problem (This might even help others with the same problem!)
    Cheers!

  • IPhone 4 home button doesn't always work

Not sure where the problem lies here, with hardware or software. The home button appears to be working inconsistently. Sometimes a normal press pulls up the home screen. Sometimes, I have to really press it hard, or several times. Double click and home screen routinely don't work reliably. Is this a software issue or hardware. If so, is it repairable or covered under warranty?

It's a hardware problem, if it's under warranty, take it to an Apple Store and they will replace it for free. If is not under warranty, they will charge you the cost to repair

  • Home button and ios8

AAnybody else finding Home button inconsistent on iOS8?  4/5 or more when I press Home the device goes into multi-tasking screen briefly then reverts to where I was when I pressed Home button

    Try:

  • The home button on my iPod Touch is unresponsive

The home button on my iPod Touch is not working.  Any app that I'm in, I can't get out of because when I press the home button, nothing happens.  Is there a way to fix this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

Dropped my iPod this morning. The home button is stuck in. It was bought for me as a Christmas Present. Is it still covered with warranty? Hope it is, if it's not how much roughly? Or is it just a simple DIY 10 min job? Thanks in advance, Freely2

  • How much would it be to replace an iPhone 5s home button?

My phone received some water damage and it looks like the home button needs to be replaced. Anybody know how much it would cost to replace?

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • Home button issues after iOS 8 update

Has anyone experienced problems with their home button after the iOS 8 update? When I am trying to exit an app using the home button I press it once, but then the iPhone acts as if I have pressed it twice quickly and brings me to the "multitasking screen". It doesn't always do this error, but it is not uncommon and it is very annoying. It never did this before the iOS 8 update. I may try to just restore the iPhone but first I want to see if anyone else is having the same problems or has any suggestions how to fix it. Thanks!!
    ~Rich

Not sure if you remember, but on previous iPhones you can reset your home button by doing this:
         >Open your Stocks App
         >while there, press & hold the power button as if you're about to turn the device off
         >once the "slide to power off" screen pops up, stop pressing the power button and press & hold the home button.  Your screen may flash a couple times but it should return to your apps screen (or home screen, w/e screen you were at before) and the Stocks App should close.  Supposedly this resets the home button
    OR
go into your Accessibility setting under General and set your "Home-click speed" to default.  That setting may have changed when you updated.
Let me know if this works...

  • Siri is prompting to unlock Iphone 6 when pressing home button for voice dial of existing contact

Just upgraded me to an IPhone 6. I restored my new phone from recent back up so all contacts, etc. are there. Also updated to latest OS.
If I depress the home button Siri is now prompting me to unlock my IPhone.
    Scenario:
Depress Home button to activate Siri
    Say "Call Home:"
Siri responds "You'll need unlock your IPhone first"
    Unlock IPhone
Siri responds "Just to confirm - you'd like to call home".
I used to be able to just say "Call home" and it would just dial.....no unlock...no confirmation.
What's changed? Is there a setting I need to tweak?
    Running iOS 8.1.1
    Thanks

    Hi teturner,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your new iPhone 6. If you are unable to voice dial from your lock screen, you may want to see if the setting to disable Siri when the phone is locked is enabled, as is noted here:
Prevent access to Siri when iPhone is locked. Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode (iPhone models with Touch ID) or Settings > Passcode (other models). You can also disable Siri by turning on restrictions. See Restrictions.

  • Iphone 4 Home button not working after upgrade to OS 4.3.5

Iphone 4 Home button not working after upgrade to OS 4.3.5.Please help!!!!!!!!

It seems that settings of mail accounts have something to do with it. I've delete my gmail account and am now using Microsoft Exchange. It seems better, yet not perfect. The issue is definitely due to OS 4.3.1
Apple answer is - no answer. It is a shame that the quality of their products, in terms of design and concept, is not match by a care for customers. It is not normal that I, as a customer, have to spend hours reading Apple Discussions forum to try to understand what the problem is. A little more respect for a customer that spend big $$$ buying their products wouldn't hurt.
