Inconsistent WiFi connectivity; going crazy!

Help! I'm not a savvy technical person and Apple Support and the Genius Bar have not been able to help me, "unable to recreate the problem ". My mid-2011 MBA can connect at the Apple Store and Panera with a transmit rate of over 300. My connection at home and Starbucks is very poor, a transmit rate less than 15 on average. This is a new issue, happening for only the last few months and only my MBA has the issue. My iPhone, PC, iPad, Kindle have no problems. I'm going crazy and can't figure this out on my own. Please help.

I finally figured out what was the problem. It was coming from my ADSL box which was somehow disturbing the RV with box to box communication.
I isolated those in a vlan. Since then everything is working fine again.

  • Slow wifi connection - going crazy trying to figure it out. Sadface.

    Howdy,
I read through the forum and tried to find a solution to this problem but everyone seems to be experiencing differences in what is wrong with their problem and I have yet to find a solution to mind.
    Problem:
Recently I've noticed my wifi connection has been slow. Slow as in Firefox will sit at "Looking up..." or "Transferring data from..." and just sit there for a few minutes then idle out, stop loading the page or give me an error stating that the server is too busy, or cannot be found. A manual refresh will either restart the process or go immediately to the site. To describe the slowness in another way as if someone is downloading something on the network that causes it to lag. I verified that my computer is not the problem (all downloads offline).
I've made no changes (except for one, stated below) to my network preferences, my router or anything. I haven't recently installed anything on here that would interfere with my network settings either.
    Failed solutions:
    - Resetting/Restarting my computer, the router and the cable modem.
    - Turning Airport on and off, even switching to a different wireless signal in the house (We have DSL and Cable, don't ask) and I get the same results from both connections.
    - OpenDNS. It solved one problem temporarily (one server seemed to be offline when in reality it was not, OpenDNS let me go there again but the speed issue remains.)
    - Software Update -- Everything is updated.
Also note that my signal strength is full all the time. It will occasionally dip down but that's nothing as the router is in a room beside mine.
My Linksys Wireless G with Speedboost router is secured with WPA and the Mac filtering enabled to only allow this laptop, my iPod Touch and my Nintendo DS access. Could this security be compromised and someone jacking my signal?
I'm at wit's end here. I've usually been able to find my solutions for these problems on a wired Windows computer but this Wifi stuff on my Mac is driving me bonkers. To me everything seems to be green but I know somewhere there is a problem.
If I did miss an important thread, please point me in the direction of it and I'll remove this topic.
Here's hoping this thing will post without timing out.
EDIT Further searching shows me this is a common problem. I guess that's a good thing.

Your Mac stores previous DNS Lookups, Ned's suggestion just empties that cache.
I'm wondering if this could be MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) related (i.e. packet size) some ISP's can be quite picky about this ...
Apple have an article on setting it for 10.2 (but not for 10.4) here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107474
CockTail also allows you to set this.

  • My IPad wifi connection goes on and off several times a day. Wha is the problem, My IPad wifi connection goes on and off several times a day. Wha is the problem

My IPad wifi and Internet  connection goes on and off. But when I being my IPad to other homes, it works. What's wrong?

    Try this
    Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
    Then rejoin the wifi.
If this does not work try this
    Settings->WI-FI->The wifi name->Forget this Network
    Then rejoin the wifi.
If this does not work try this
press the home button and lock until you see the apple logo.
    I hope this works ;-)

  • Updated to Mavericks - Now dropping WiFi connections like crazy

The title says it all. On an early 2013 MacBook Pro retina. Running perfect until the day I upgraded to Mavericks. Now my WiFi drops anywhere from once an hour to every 5 minutes, and also has trouble reconnecting after waking up from sleep. I've tried the various fixes mentioned on the forums and collected here, but nothing has worked yet.
To be clear, I have many devices/computers in the house, and only one of them has trouble wiht WiFi, the one I upgraded to Mavericks, and it started the day I upgraded it to Mavericks.
There seem to be a lot of other sufferers. Any good solutions?

Words cannot describe how angry this problem makes me. How can world's largest tech company not been able to fix their biggest bug for this many months now?!?!
All these forums are overflowing with the same **** problem: WIFI DOESN'T CONNECT AFTER COMING BACK FROM SLEEP ON MAVERICKS.
How many thousands of people have to post the same godddamn problem for how long?
And no, disconnecting Bluetooth doesn't help (even if it did, its not an acceptable solution). I took my MacBook Air to Apple store twice already and they cannot help either.
aaaAAAAaAaaAAaaarrrrghhh, I'm going to go insane from this problem.
I miss Steve.. he wouldn't let something like this go on for this long. Can a half a trillion dollar company pay attention to its own support forums or at least google "wifi-not-connecting-after-sleep-mavericks" and realize what incompetent company you have become?!

  • Wifi connections goes "Limited" frequently.

So i've had this issue ever since i installed windows 7 ultimate via bootcamp on my mac. When i go in games or even the browser, my ping sky rockets and the internet connections always drops every 3 minutes saying "Limited Access". I cant even browse properly or play in games without losing connection and its highly annoying. This only happens on the Windows 7 side, and no its not my connection, the wifi works well with my other computers and gives no problems. ALL Drivers are up to date on the windows 7 partition. Any suggestions or help? Please. Will be greatly appreciated .

  • Can't connect - going crazy!

Hi, I have just spent several hours on this - I have the latest version of PC Suite, a 8800 handset and want to connect via bluetooth.
There are no connection options on the get connected screen and an error message of 'MMLIstEmpty' - I have uninstalled, reinstalled, used PC Suite Cleaner etc etc, without success. I am using XP SP2.
Please help as I have a new handset and want to be able to transfer the contacts etc from my old handset to the new one.
    Thanks
    Tim

  • Simultaneous WiFi connections.

hello! i was wondering if it's possible to have two wifi connections going at once?
not so i have 2 different internet connections, but the wifi connection as well as the "create network" network that i created is also running. I need this, because my iPhone doesn't pick up on my wifi, but it does pick up when i select "create network" (under Airport) and chose that in my iPhone, however this means i have no internet on my MacBook.
basically, i need a way to have both the created and my WiFi connection running.
    thank you!

In this case you have to add a WiFi USB Dongle - Use this dongle to connect to the internet while using your internal Airport card to create a network.
It might be easier to re-configure your router so that your iPhone get log into your WiFi as well as your MacBook.

  • Iphone 5C wifi greyed out and screen going crazy

Hi I bought my iPhone back in October in Us from Tmobile, since December the wifi greyed out and hasn't worked once (been living on data) now recently the screen goes crazy, it types by its self unlocks the phone (dont have a password) sometimes calls people etc... now the thing is I recently moved to Dubai and I cant go to a apple store as we do not have one here, so could I ship my phone to States and have apple repair it or give me a replacement if I pay for their shipping costs back to Dubai ? Thanks for any help I can get

If not jailbroken, restore the iOS. Most likely there is a hardware problem
The warranty is valid only in the USA.  Apple will not accept shipment from or ship to any address outside the USA for this phone.

My new Mac Air continues to disconnect from WiFi after going to sleep.  When waking it up I have to manually re-connect.  How do I keep it connected?

I had this problem too and solved it by doing a clean install. After that it was gone.
This is a drastic method since it takes quite some time to reinstall lion and all your software.
Thoughts I had why it started working after a clean install are the following:
It looked like the airport wasn't able to reconnect fast enough before the connection timed out. So what could have prevented my mac from being able to connect fast enough?
Apps that consume processor cycles. I love what I would call 'System Enhancers', little apps that enhance my workflow (Moom, Alfred, Dropbox, Default Folder etc). I'm not saying that these are the problem, they might be programmed processor friendly, but check if you have apps that consume processor cylcles. It might prevent airport from being able to reconnect quickly enough before it times out.
Mobile Config profiles. Another thought I had was that I had a mobile config 802.1X profile installed for the company were I worked. It used TTLS to connect to the corporate network. This profile might have gotten in the way.
    And a sidenote...
Routers with hardware acceleration might also be a problem. My router is a Wireless Gigabit Router 300N WL-351 and has hardware acceleration. As soon as I activate that my wifi connection keeps dropping. It is as if a Macbook Air can't handle that amount of optimisation.
That's it, hope it helps those who are still having the problem.
    Best, Jan

So, about a week ago my macbook pro started having lots of issues: wifi connectivity, slow performance, sound issues, spotlight wasn't working. After going through the issues with apple support, they decided the best course of action was to erase the hard drive and do a reinstall. Since I have a recent backup this seemed like a good enough option. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the snow leopard disk to do the install since we couldn't get it to complete through the disk utility. Not sure why, since it says we are fully connected, it just never completed.
Anyway, so now that you have the background here is the new issue. The macbook pro keeps spitting out the disk I'm trying to install from. Disk utility and using the 'Startup Disk' function from the apple menu doesn't read the disk.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this vexing problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Jeremy.Laurin,
have you tried agb76’s approach here?

  • I just updated my iphone 4 to ios6 and now I can't keep the wifi connection to stay on. I have to keep entering my wifi password when the phone goes to sleep. How do I keep the wifi connection when I wake up the phone?

I just updated my iphone 4 to ios6 and I can't keep the wifi connection when the phone goes to sleep. I need to keep entering my wifi password when I wake up the phone. How do I keep the wifi on each time I walk into my house without reentering my password?

What? Do you work for Apple?
I have been on the phone for Apple since 5:30 Eastern Time today. We are still on the phone with them. It is 10:14 PM. We are going to get a new phone because the ios6 has major problems! The wifi connectivity is a serious problem. Apple is aware of it. More people need to do something about it. I am willing to start a class action suit against them. I have means to an attorney pro bono. If you are having problems using your iphone 4 or 4s with wifi and ios6...I suggest you spend time calling a senior advisor and get a new phone sent to you. They know they messed up but they can't fix it.

  • My brand new iMac loses its WiFi connection when it goes to sleep, does anyone have a proven fix?.

I have a MacBook that is about 4 years old and a brand new iMac both are running the most up to date version of Lion.  My old MacBook has no issues; however, my iMac loses its WiFi connection every time it goes to sleep.  There are some discussions about this already out there but does anyone have a proven fix.  This is very frustrating.

I was having the same problem for a long time.  I tried everything but nothing seemed to make it stay connected.  It was very frustrating.  I just got a new Airport Extreme.....bang!.....all better.  Problem gone.

  • My imac loses wifi connection when it goes to sleep, how to correct?

My iMac loses wif connection when it goes to sleep.  How do I correct?

Are you running OS X Lion? If so there are unfortunately numerous threads on here discussing exactly the same problem. So far there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution, with everyone hoping that Apple will come up with a permanent fix.
Here's a quick search of these forums alone - depressing reading:

  • Fan going crazy every time we run anything  - system very slow. Connected?

System has slowed down dramatically of late. Now fan is going crazy. Are they connected? Any way to speed things up ?

You should be comparing it to the size of your hard drive. Look in About this Mac>more info>serial ATA which will give you the drive size. If it's the original, it probably is 160GB, so you have more than enough space.
Have you emptied the caches and reset the SMU? And vacuumed the air vents?
You have amazingly little memory. I would add at least 1GB, which you can find at [macsales.com] or [smalldog.com] or [newegg, com]. Make sure that whatever you buy has a lifetime guarantee. I suspect once you add more memory, your troubles will be over.
