Inconsitent startup times to get to "Network Account Available"

We are trying to implement a mac mini server to control desktop, docking, preferences etc.
Seems to be working fine however, oftenly the MACs take up to 10 minutes to turn the login box status icon from red to orange to green on startup.
only when it's green can a student login and authenticate with AD
Really confused as to why they are doing this.
They have a 1gb lan connection to both mac and 2008 r2 servers
In DNS Manager i have 2 entries for each of my 4 x domain controllers, one A record points to it's static ip address for the network(10..*.), the other points towards its local ip for the SAN unit setup we have (192..*.) - could this be the problem? I have ordered the the name server record to put the 10..*. IP first in it's list but it keeps defaulting back to the 192 san unit address to be first in it's list. Could this be the problem or am i chasing a rabbit hole to nowhere??

Take a look at the DNS Server addresses that are being set on the clients. If any of the addresses here do not point to a DNS server in your network, then you will see this sort of oddness. If these are being propagated from a DHCP server automatically, then you may need to adjust the DHCP server so it gives out correct addresses to the clients.

  • Network Accounts Available Indicator

I need to better understand the "Network Accounts Available" indicator light. We have eMacs and put in new Cisco GB switches. When we start from a cold boot, it usually takes about 3 -4 minutes for this indicator light to turn from red to green. If I turn AFP off on the XServe, it still takes the same amount of time for this indicator light to change but if you try to log in, you cannot do it because AFP is turned off. I understand that the users cannot login because AFP is disabled. We tried to force the switch and the workstation to 100baseTX / full-duplex and there were not any consistent changes in time.
So my question is, what exactly is it telling us? Is it the time it takes to establish a connection from the eMac to the server? Is it the amount of time it takes to auto-negotiate to the first switch that it is connected? Is it an issue that the NIC card is having trying to auto-negotiate with a Gigabit switch? I really need some input because we are starting to put more Gigabit switches in our schools and we still have a lot of eMacs.
All responses are more than welcome.
    Our hardware is:
    eMacs - OS 10.4.6 - 10.4.11, 256 or 512 MB RAM, 1GB PPC processor
    Switches - Cisco 3560, 4500, & 6500
Server - OS 10.4.11, 2 GB RAM, PowerPC G4 processor

Is the Ethernet Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations? That is the search order for connections.
Do you have proper DNS Servers & Search Domain entered in the Network>TCP/IP tab for Ethernet?

  • Some Network Accounts Available

I am having 50 Mac Pro with 10.4.11 and 2 OD servers with 10.4.11
The server is bind to the AD of the company for a single login, I can see the users name at the login window but when users key in the password it just doesn't login. But out of the 50 only one mac pro is able to login with the users password, the rest it just shake and return to login screen. The status from the login screen is a yellow dot - Some Network Accounts Available. On eof the server is also getting it . I have try to unbind and rebind it but no luck.
    Please help!! urgent

    Hi Lookout,
Try to change the following 3 configurations:
    1. Turn off IPv6 under TCP/IP of the Network Preferences
    2. Change the Search Policy under Directory Utility. Make the Active Directory come first before the LDAPv3
    3. Also under Directory Utility, go to Services tab, open up the LDAPv3, add the OD server by using IP address instead of server name.
I can't say the above will fix the problem. But this is what the Apple engineer told me to change. And after all these changes it seems to be working fine. I am still randomly rebooting, logging in and out to test it to see if it works constantly. The Apple engineer is also working on her end to research more. So there is no final solution yet. But if you could, please do the same as I did and see if that helps. Let me know so I can forward your status to the engineer also. Thanks and write more soon.

  • HT5312 I cannot use my apple id because every time I get into my account with the correct password, it prompts me for security questions which I've forgotten my answers.  It does not let me  reset my security questions even using a rescue email.  Help!!!

I feel like I'm in an infinite loop.  I have all of the information correct except my security questions -- I set them up quickly and forgot what I answered.  Per the FAQs on Apple's website, I should be able to get a rescue email that allows me to reset the answers to the questions, however all I get is a rescue email to reset my password.  This is my first time trying to use this account and I can't get around the security questions.  Can anyone help me?  I just want to download some music to my mini iPad.

Click here, phone them, and ask for the Account Security team, or fill out and submit this form.

  • Lion 10.7.3 and Kanaka 2.7 "no network accounts available"

Server is OES2SP3 on SLES10.4. Kanaka 2.7 installed and configured,
OS10.6 clients have no trouble authenticating via plugin and all
    expected volumes mount.
On iMacs running OS X 10.7.3, installing the plug-in and configuring
it results in a succesful authentication test in the directory utiliy.
However, on bootup the login screen shows a red flag next to the
username and the message "network accounts are not available".
If we authenticate as a local user, command-k will successfully
connect to the server and mount volumes as desired. I have checked
afptcpd.conf on the server and verified that AUTH_NAM is set to DHX2
Any suggestions on where to look next?
    Thanks,

  • Upgrading to 10.9.4 causes slower startup time & system gets hot and causes fan to run during startup for no reason! Never did this before.

Macbook pro 7,1, osx 10.9.4.. just upgraded from 10.9.3. 10.9.2 was installed fresh in January.
Before that I had snow leopard. Never before has the fan turned on during startup in the 3.5 years I've owned this machine. That means the laptop gets hot? Why would it get hot at startup? And it takes 5-10 seconds longer to boot now too.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 and the fan hasn't stopped since. Before seeing this post I was starting to get VERY worried. Now I'm thinkin..... Apple - ya gotta fix something here!!

  • OS X Server and Network Account Server

May I install OS X Server on Mavericks when it has a network account server configured? Or is the one functionality (here network account server) excluding the other one (OS X Server)?
    Thanks,
    Yves

    Thanks for your reply.
I believe I got it to work, but,... How do you get the network account users to show up on the login window of the client computer? The login window shows the name of the client computer and the local accounts on the client computer. When I select Other in the login list I can login using a network account user id and it logs in. The network account user names do not show up on the login window

  • Active Directory - Network Accounts Unavailable after reboot

The issue I'm having with Snow Leopard is that I can bind accounts to AD and on the first boot it works perfectly. It shows Network Accounts Available and I can login using an AD account. After I reboot and on every boot after the first it then shows Network Accounts Unavailable. I logged in as local admin and it shows it is bound to the domain and it has a green light under the Directory Utility for the domain.
Here are the main bits of info regarding this problem:
    1. Computer is bound to domain on first boot using Deploy Studio's firstboot script. This works brilliantly on 10.5 and only became a problem on 10.6.
    2. On first boot, it binds to the domain correctly and shows Network Accounts Available. I can log in using a network account and everything is peachy.
    3. If I reboot the machine, the status on the loginbox changes to Network Accounts Unavailable and has a red light.
    4. If I've logged in to an AD account on first boot, it will log in even with the red light present (it is a mobile account). This is working properly.
    5. If I try to log in using an account that has never logged in before, it will not log it in.
    6. If I login in as local admin and check the Directory Utility, it shows the machine as being properly bound to the domain and has a green light even thought the login box shows a red one.
These are all the facts surrounding this issue that I have at the moment. I am booting up a 10.5 image right now that is freshly imaged and will report back its behavior using the same AD binding script that is being used on the 10.6 image.

Quick Update on the 10.5 AD Binding test I said I was doing.
Every time I reboot on 10.5, it says Network Accounts Unavailable for a few seconds and then switches to Network Accounts Available.
On Snow Leopard, it never switches to Network Accounts Available, it stays stuck on unavailable.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nate

  • Cannot login to network account (leopard client and server)

Up until now, I have used local accounts on my leopard server. I want to start experimenting with OD prior to implementing. I created a new user account in the /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 domain, and have bound my leopard client to the server using directory utility. On the login screen, "Network Accounts Available" has a green button to the left of it. When I try and login to the server account, the login window just shakes. At first, I could enter the password and then it would prompt me for a new password. Trying to enter a new password would not allow me to login. I went back to server admin and disabled the "require new password" setting, (as well as the other good security policies)...
I have also reset the password in WGM, and made sure to disable all the security stuff there too...
Lastly, I have deleted the server in directory utility, rebooted, then added it back in, and rebooted again...
I still cannot login to the server account, the login screen just shakes
Does anyone have an idea of what settings and or logs I can check to try and narrow down what is going on?
    Thanks in advance....

to close out the thread, I have working dns on my network, but I did not have dns enabled on my server. I enabled the dns service and entered just the info for my server, then assigned my server and client to use the server's ip addy as the primary dns server. Next, I created the home directory.
Once both steps were done, I was able to log in from my client to my server based account...
FYI-I found a document on afp548.com called "leopard server: advanced setup, rsync backup and automated reporting" that walks you right thru the process...Here is the link, it's a very useful doc....

  • Slow network accounts

    setup:
    Mac Pro
    10.5.6
    Active Directory - accounts
    Open Directory - group settings
    Problem:
When I boot up my machine it takes a while before all netowrk accounts are available. It sits with a yellow ball stating "Some network accounts available" for about 15-30 seconds before switching to green and stating all network accounts are available.
Anyone else see this? Why might it be slow? There isn't anything logged that can help point me in the right direction to optimize things unfortunately.

Make sure you are using the same DNS & NTP server on the Mac as the Active Directory server.

    Hey there,

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

  • Time Machine Backups Accessible to Network Accounts?

So I've decided to scrap portable home directories in our office and switch to network accounts for all but one user (she uses both an iMac and a MacBook Air). Everyone has an iMac at their desk and I have two Mac Mini servers running Mountain Lion Server. Server A runs DNS, directory services (and holds all user accounts), filesharing, etc. Server B runs netinstall, filesharing, and Time Machine (connected to a G-RAID fw800). Server A backs up to the G-RAID through Server B. Server B also backs up to the G-RAID.
The first thing I discovered while testing the new configuration (no local users on the iMacs) is that network accounts do not support file history in iWork documents. You can revert to a previous version of a document using pages as long as it's open but once you close it, there's no more history. I figure, that's ok. They can use Time Machine to browse previous versions of their files. Not so...
I can enable time machine, select the network disk, and authenticate with the user's password. When it tries to perform a backup, it fails, saying it cannot find the disk. I'm skeptical that it would work even if it could connect, since it would only make a backup of the client computer's local account (right?).
I can add the network mount for the time machine backups to the users' docks since the open directory server backs up, but they have to navigate through a forest of confusing folders to find what they're looking for. This is pretty much the exact path:
    network>server A>backup>backups.backupdb>server HD>2013-10-03-162217>server hd>users>rachel>documents>thatfileyouneed.pages
There's got to be a better way to do this.
I want Rachel to be able to sit down at her desk, log in, and work on her files (mainly pages and numbers files). I'd like for her to be able to revert back to a previous version of her file without having to navigate through a maze of folders. Her workstation, when logged out, has nothing of value stored on it.
TL;DR - Can network users logged into an account held on a server, that's backed up through another server, click on the time machine icon and browse their files? Is there a way to get file history working on a network account?
Oh, and the stupid trackpad>natural scrolling settings keep resetting every time I log the test machine into her account on the server. What's up with that?

Time Machine icon in the dock will not do anything unless Time Machine is enabled.
Check the box marked Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preference pane. You do not have to enable TM to do that. The menu item will be grayed, but you can still hold down the option key and select Browse Other... All valid local TM volumes will appear in the list that opens, including disk images that are hosted on a network volume but mounted locally.
when the drive where the backups are stored is selected, clicking the icon (even an option click) throws up an error message.
That's a separate issue. How did you set up this volume as a backup destination? How are you backing up local files on the clients now?
