InCopy CS4

We're currently running InDesign CS4. We've not previously had a copy of InCopy, but need to add it to one workstation. All I can find to purchase is InCopy CS5 or CS5.5 and I'm told that this is incompatible with InDesign CS4. We are not in a position to upgrade our five current CS4 users to CS5; that would also force an upgrade of hardware from 32 bit to 64 bit systems and that's way out of the budget. All we need is one copy of InCopy CS4, not five new workstations with CS5 upgrades plus a new InCopy CS5. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks!

Thanks anyway Bob. I'll keep on the lookout for an unopened/unused IC CS4 (a.k.a. The Holy Grail), but we'll likely have to wait 'til we can get a budget approved for overall hardware/software upgrades.
As to the IC CS5 to ID CS4 compatibility subject addressed in socalgecko's reply:
My understanding is that an editor can use InCopy CS5 to open the designer's InDesign CS4 files, but the files are converted on opening and therefore no longer backward compatible to the designer's CS4 - in other words, it's a one way ONLY compatibility, defeating the whole purpose of the workflow.
Is that pretty much right?
If anyone has any other suggestions (or has the Holy Grail unopened sitting in a desk drawer) I'd love to hear from you.
Many thanks!

I don't imagine they can open an InDesign CS5 file with InCopy CS4, can they?

    Hello Srivatsan,
The differences between downtime minimized and the resource minimized is the first shutdown of the production system. For downtime minimized strategy it's the phase MODPROF_TRANS. And for resource minimized, it's either EU_import, or the START_SHDI_FIRST. But you can restart the soruce system(but not in production mode) after that until MODPROF_TRANS.
The downtime actually is depend on the hardware and the size of the database. It has nothign to do with the application. It's doing the table conversion and changing and keep them consistent.
To be safe, I would recommend you to plan at least a weekend for the downtime (after MODPROF_TRANS) if the database is not too big.

  • Adobe InCopy CS4 Has Stopped Working

I just installed Adobe InCopy CS4, on my Windows Vista OS. Everytime I close InCopy I get the error message: Adobe InCopy has stopped working,a problem caused the program to stop working correctly, windows will close the program. I am not computer savvy so I do not know or where to look on how to fix this.Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks

I am having the same problem. I have not been able to find a solution yet. I have CS5 now and it still does it like when I had CS4.
    64bit will NOT open.
I gave up with CS4, but now I would like to figure out what Im doing wrong. There must be some setting that Im missing.
    1. 64bit wont ever open.
    2. If I open a PSD file from a folder (with no photoshop program open) windows automaticly uses 64bit... and it doesnt open.
    3. If I have photoshop 32bit program already open, then I can open PSD files from folders and/or drop them in.
    4. How do I make the 32bit my default when opening a PSD file, when no photoshop program is open? You can not choose 32bit as a default.
I would love to just use 64bit.

  • InCopy CS4 crashes frequently - any thoughts?

I posted the below on an earlier thread, but thought I would actually create a new one for this problem.
Hi, I am also experiencing crashes with InCopy in Windows. We recently bought the software in my office, having used the free trial to test it on our machines, which worked fine. However since we started using it last week, we have had nothing but trouble.
I'd guess 1 out of 5 times we try to save the file, or check it back in, our InCopy will crash (after we wait a good 20 mins to make sure it's not just taking its time), which means we have to force quit the file. When opening up InCopy again, Ic recovers the file, and when it comes back it is locked to the user, but has a little yellow triangle meaning it is out of date (recognising that it is saved somewhere). When we try to update the file we get the dialog 'This is not a valid InDesign Interchange document' (or words to that effect).
We've tried all three work-flows: using a layout-based workflow; using assignments that are placed on the server with the InDesign documents on the designer's Mac; creating packaged assignments that we then email to each other, eliminating the server being the problem. Each time it will work for a few attempts, and will then crash when we try to save or check it back in, so we force quit and it corrupts etc etc.
We are both running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, the processer speed of both our machines is above the recommended spec, and I have 1 GB RAM while my colleague has 2 GB. We are updated to InCopy CS4 6.0.3.
Has anyone else been experiencing this at all?
If any more information is needed please let me know. We're running behind on our production schedule already, and if the problem isn't solved, we're going to have to go back to using print-outs to mark-up changes (which nobody wants). We've tried the recommended troubleshooting - deleting Ic preferences, removing links and then creating new assignments, increasing virtual memory...
We work on directories, and so there is quite a large volume of text being worked on, as well as every line being tagged with XML so it can be exported. Could this be having an effect?
I'd appreciate anyone getting back to me with suggestions please!
    Thanks,
    Sarah

CS6 will have nothing to do with CS4…and by the way, there’s no point in moving InCopy users to CS6 unless the InDesign users move as well.

  • InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.  Lynn

Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel. That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:
    http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=651
(Chapter 15 isn't one of the freebie chapters, but you (or anyone) can use my 24-hour free pass for full access to their entire training library: http://lynda.com/freepass/amconcepcion)

  • Any way of getting hold of InCopy CS4?

I work for a small publishing department within a much larger institution with no IT budget and no way of upgrading to intel macs so that we can upgrade to CS5 (unless someone wins the lottery). We produce corporate reports to very tight deadlines and have identified InCopy as a way to shorten our production processes and give us some work/life balance back. HOWEVER, we can't get hold of InCopy CS4 any more.
It is exceptionally frustrating that Adobe is effectively forcing us to upgrade to CS5 - which we are not in a position to do for another couple of years. We're not a cutting edge design agency, but we are subject to some of the same pressures/requirements. Doesn't seem to be a very good way of encouraging people to use your products, if you ask me!

Nice folks there. I met a few of them last night at the NYC InDesign user group meeting.
If they can help, that's great.

  • Incopy CS4/Win: Prevent the input or change text in tables

    Hi
I have a plugin for InCopy CS4. In this plugin, I like to prevent the input or the change of text in tables. This works in the layout window, I can detect if the user clicks into a table and then I prevent the input.
    - How can I do this in the Galley or Story window?
    - Can I prevent the user to open a table for editing the text? I mean the opening of the table via arrow.
    - Can I prevent the user to input text into a table cell?
    Thanks for any hint.
    Kind regards
    Hans

To check for text in the main story, compare the offset to ITextModel::GetPrimaryStoryThreadSpan.
For details on other threads: ITextModel::QueryStoryThread yields the thread.
::GetClass() of that object will be kTextCellContentBoss, kFootnoteReferenceBoss etc.
I never have seen IInCopyTableContext, so you have to be more specific with that "something".
From the docs I guess that it will only exist while loading the table from ICML or whatever XML.
Anyway you better keep any modifications (beyond getters) within that TextPreProcess strictly to the given data, and schedule any other changing commands that you might need.

  • InCopy CS4 Crashes On Launch

My co-workers in another office all received new MacBooks and now their InCopy CS4 will not launch after the migration. Instead, it just crashes immediately ("has quit unexpectedly") whenever they try and launch. I have had them try and reset the preferences with quick keys upon launch, but that's not working.
has anyone run into this or have any other solutions?
    Thanks!

  • InCopy CS4 display language problem

Our organization has just installed InCopy CS4 (Win version). Suppose we all install Chinese version, so the display of InCopy CS4 should be Chinese. However, we found that some of our computers display english.
How can we change back to display Chinese? Some one told us to check the setting of control panel, change the language to Chinese(Taiwan). We did, but still display English, What's the problem?
Hope some one can answer my questions. Thanks

"Updated Video Drivers" seems to be the latest chorus around here.
It's like a song that you really hate and can't get out of your mind. No matter how many times you check for new video drivers, the problems don't go away.

  • InCopy CS4 Help is now live

Even though InCopy CS4 hasn't shipped yet, weve just posted InCopy CS4 Help on the Web:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InCopy/6.0/index.html
We still have some work to do and bugs to fix, but we figured that youd get a lot of benefit from taking an early peek. Here's the topic describing the new CS4 features:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InCopy/6.0/WSCDACE703-28F6-4359-A3BB-150C6957B4DD.html
Note that many links to video tutorials, other Help documents, and white papers are still not functional, and the search doesnt really work yet. And commenting isnt turned on yet. This should all be fixed when we ship.
You may also want to take a sneak peak at the new community custom search engine, which is still under construction:
    http://community.adobe.com/help/
Feel free to contact me if you have suggestions for improving Help. Also, if you find any sites that should be included in the custom search engine, let me know: [email protected]

That's sweet! It's been frustrating hitting the dead link instead of actual help.
Right off the top of my head, the one thing I immediately notice would be that friendlier URLs would be nice. Any plans for them in the future?
For example, the link to Searching Using GREP Expressions right now is:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WS1952D538-1335-4b1d-BA5E-FA5A176FDC9Fa.html
Would be nice if it was more like:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/search-using-grep-expressions.html
    or even the whole path:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/text/find-change/search-using-grep-expressions.ht ml

  • InCopy CS4 (mac) cannot create or open any files

I have a user's computer which I upgraded the OS on, and afterwards I went to check to see if InCopy runs.  I was running it as a client of NewsEdit and it couldn't open the files.  So I ran uninstall and install, and eventually realized that even without NewsEdit I can't get it to create a New file.  Here is what I have done:
Ran the uninstaller, ticking the remove preferences option.
Put all remaining InCopy files that I could find in the trash, emptied the trash.
Ran the CS5 cleanup tool which I found on the adobe support site.  (It cleans up CS3 and CS4 installs, too.)
Used applejack to fsck the disk, repair permissions, clean system and user caches, clean up virtual memory.
Rebooted, logged in to an administrator account, ran the "Setup" program inside the InCopy installer.  Put in the license number, set it to install everything on the list (recommended).
Launched InCopy, Clicked on File->New and hit "Continue" on the panel.  Program hangs.
    Force Quit InCopy.
Used Get Info on the /Applications/Adobe In Copy folder to set its permissions and the permissions of all files down the tree to read+write for everyone.
Launched InCopy, Clicked on File->New and hit "Continue" on the panel.  Program hangs.
    Force Quit InCopy.
If I use AdobeUpdate to Update to 6.0.6 I get exactly the same behavior.
If I update to 6.0.5 I get the same behavior.
If I try to open an existing InCopy file, it hangs the same way.
My own computer runs InCopy just fine, giving these messages to the Console:
    1/21/11 3:34:24 PM    [0x0-0xaa5aa5].com.adobe.InCopy[43770]    Error in XmlRpcClient::writeRequest: write error (error 32).
1/21/11 3:34:51 PM    Adobe InCopy CS4[43770]    *** __NSAutoreleaseNoPool(): Object 0x3618180 of class NSCFArray autoreleased with no pool in place - just leaking
    1/21/11 3:35:40 PM    [0x0-0xaa5aa5].com.adobe.InCopy[43770]    virtual uint32 XMLRPCIdleTask::RunTask(uint32, IdleTimer*) threw -18151471 (feeb07d1) 'Failed executing externalEditor.registerEditor'
I can watch the Console on the machine where IC hangs, it gives all of the expected Console messages, until I go to open the file, and there are no messages after that.
Anybody have any clue as to what I've broken?  We have InCopy alone or InCopy as part of the whole CS4 in multiple machines, and everyone else's works just fine.

Sales Opportunity has been put in Stage number 2 directly. In other words there is only one open row in the stages tab which happens to be the 2nd stage out of 7 stages.
Also, ran SELECT * FROM OCLG WHERE OPRID='60' - this query gives no result rows.

  • How do I insert page #s in the headers of the notes pp in an InCopy CS4 document?

Hi! I'm proofreading a manuscript in InCopy CS4, and I need to insert into the headers of the notes pages the page numbers on which the notes appear in the text. I can only see the headers in the layout mode (which I can't edit), but I can't find them in the story or galley mode. How can I edit them?
    Thanks!

    TT2,
It works just as you thought it might!
I used both Text Edit and Pages to test it. From any file, I copied the invisible "space" that is the line break in Text Edit, and the visible symbol in Pages. Then back in iTunes, I opened the Get Info file of several different songs. In Comments wherever I needed the line break, my key sequence was simply the Command/V which is Paste for Mac.
While this is not as perfect a solution as the CTRL/M in the Windows version, it will shave countless hours from the project of editing the files by pasting the entire section back and forth to a Text Edit program.
For my own current need, the things to be added are brief, mostly numeric (at what position and in what year a song charted for example) and can be keyed in easily without losing my clipboard. Should I need to to paste something else, I'd have to go back to that text file and grab the magic carriage return again.
Christopher, I hope you find this helpful too - and who knows, maybe Apple will add a little key combination for the Mac.
Thank you again for your input here - it's been a grand adventure. Next up to mark my question answered

  • Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy CS4 or when I update an InCopy File

Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy or when I update an InCopy CS4 File. I have done some of the troubleshooting steps already and have already re-installed and re-updated through Adobe Updater. But the problem still exists. Anyone have any patches or fixes? • Can my editor open an indb file in InCopy CS4?

I think the answer is no, although I'm not sure why. It would be great if my editor could open my indb file in InCopy CS4 rather than opening all indd files - but it doesn't appear possible. Is it?

The default text editor in windows is usually notepad so you should be able to do this:
    Runtime.exec("notepad.exe myfile.xml");
FWIW, if you use the same technique as to open the default browser, it will probably open the xml file in IE since this is the usual default registration.

  • Adobe InCopy CS4 Missing Fonts...

I have a few users who are dealing with an InCopy file provided by a third party vendor who does their Marketing gazettes and logos, etc... Upon purchasing InCopy CS4, when opening the document provided, they receive a message stating "Missing Fonts" and they include:

    Helvetica Neue (T1) 65 Medium

I had went to MyFonts.com and downloaded one to test: Franklin Gothic Extra Condensed. The link to the one that I had purchased is here: http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/franklin-gothic/extra-condensed/
The font is installed, but Adobe does not see it. MS Word sees the font fine along with other applications. Did I purchase the wrong font or am I not doing something right with Adobe?
I have been working with this issue for a few weeks now, and are willing to try whatever I can to get the font seen by the application.
Any help with this would be much appreciated, or simliar approaches to the same problem.

I am having a similar problem. I get the list of "missing" fonts. Problem is, I have them installed but in a couple of cases the names are slightly different.
InCopy sees the fonts, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to substitute them, let alone permanently.
