InCopy to determine length of article with InDesign template - possible?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew whether it is possible to create a report template in InDesign CS5 (which consists of a header/title image at the top of each page) and export it to InCopy so my editors can determine the length of the article?
So far I have only seen that it is possible for someone to use it as a standalone word processor (meaning that the editors cannot see the template headers etc) OR that I need to determine how many pages they can write in InDesign as create assignments from there.
I would really like to be able to just create the background template and the editors/copywriters can do what they want in terms of length of text etc.
The only workaround that I can see would be to create a 200 page InDesign doc with threaded text frames and the editors can type as little or as much as they like. I would then have to go into the template and delete the empty pages at the end of the process.
Surely there is a better way?!!?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How essential are these images? You could theoretically start in InDesign, then export a text frame for them to work with, but with editors using the file over and over, you'd lose the previous content of the InCopy file every time.
Why not start in InCopy? You can select a column width and even a depth when you open a new file. If you have your body paragraph style applied and save it as a template, your editors will know exactly how many lines they're running. If you set a depth, it will even tell them when they're over/under the desired amount. With Smart Text Reflow turned on in your preferences, it will add and delete pages as needed. Going this route and adding the images later seems like much less of a headache than trying to start in InDesign.

  • InDesign Crashes when uploading an article with Web Content Overlay - have checked forums

    I'm making a folio for my design portfolio in InDesign CC
    I currently have one article uploaded, when I try to add my next article InDesign crashes.
    I have previously uploaded the article without the single web content overlay and it uploads fine.
    The status bar gets stuck at the end 'Building folio ... Processing overlays...'
    The content is a simple web form and is only on page 6/6 - not sure why it's freezing by adding a small page on the end.

    I've just tried uploading a single page article with the Web Content overlay and it's crashed again.
    Not sure if that means it's the web content?

  • InCopy CS2 Copyfitting with InDesign CS3, Version Cue CS3

    Hello. We are using InCopy CS2 together with InDesign CS3 as part of an Version Cue CS3 workflow.  Certain stories do not copyfit exactly in InCopy CS2. They copyfit properly in InDesign CS3, but when the assignment with these stories is opened in InCopy CS2, the copyfit is close, but not perfect. We never had this problem when we were using InDesign CS2.
    Has anyone seen this problem; can anyone suggest a workaround?  (Incidentally, The copyfit looks just fine when we open the file in InCopy CS3;  but we are NOT using InCopy CS3, because it causes synchronization problems - it reports that files are open, when they are not. )
    Thanks for your help - Chris

    The text engines have changed from CS2 to CS3 and again with CS4.
    There's no way to get an accurate copy fit using a different version of InCopy than InDesign.

  • InCopy CS5 with InDesign CS4

    Folks,
    A customer of ours have a fwe licences of InDesign CS4, and are looking to put InCopy on a few more desks. They're a charity, so it'll be EDU licences, and they really don't want to have to upgrade their existing CS4 to CS5.
    Is there likely to be any issue in them mixing-and-matching like this? Clearly, InCopy CS5 is going to work quite happily with InDesign CS4 files, but what about if those files then get passed back?
    I'm presuming that I'm going to find it very hard work to find any InCopy CS4 licences still in the distie channel - it's been enough of a ball-ache just getting pricing...
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian.

    Don't even think about doing it. At the very least text will reflow differently from InCopy to InDesign and from InDesign to InCopy.
    Amazon has CS4 upgrades http://amzn.to/9CpaX9
    for $99 and full versions  http://amzn.to/9L8mgt
    for about $280.
    Don't know how long they'll last.

  • Would InCopy CC work with InDesign CS6?

    Will InCopy CC work with InDesign CS6?

    We have no problems here: InDesign CC and InCopy CS6: works fine, assignments, packages all is exhancing perefctly. The same for InCopy CC and InDesign CS6. The assigments are still .icma. Have no use for QR-codes however so no idea if this will cause problems but I can not see why it would..

  • Will InCopy CS6 work with InDesign CS5.5?

    Hi folks - I need to use InDesign CS5.5 due to a customer's requirement. I need to use InCopy to delegate copy editing. Looks like the lowest version of InCopy I can get is InCopy CS6. Will InCopy CS6 play nice with InDesign CS5.5?
    Thanks in advance.

    bahhh
    Cheers for your reply though. Is there any way of getting InCopy CS5.5 these days?

  • InCopy CS4 ok with InDesign CS5.5?

    I work at a small newspaper using all Macs and CS4. The writers use InCopy as their word processor, and the designer links their IC files in her ID document. Sometimes an IC linked file will require further editing in IC, but they never use IC to open an ID document.
    We want to upgrade the designer and copy editors (who all use InDesign) to CS5.5. I'm wondering if we can squeeze another year out of the writers' PPC Macs, which will not run IC CS5.5, by having them stay on IC CS4. Having to upgrade 15 Macs will be pricy.
    I've seen several questions here about using InCopy CS5.5 with older versions of InDesign, but not the other way around. Can InCopy CS4 be used with InDesign CS5.5 in the workflow I have described?
    Related question: if InCopy CS5.5 opens an InCopy CS4 doocument, does that change the document so that it can't be opened in InCopy CS4 again? (in case we upgrade the writers incrementally).

    Just bite the bullet and upgrade everyone. Sometimes the cost for doing something is way less than it is for not doing something.

  • Article upload/update is much slower with indesign CC then CS6 was.

    Updating Articles from indesign CC through the Folio Builder Panel has become very slow compared to when I was using indesign CS6. Are there different settings that the CC version is using that CS6 wasn't that may be causing this lengthened time-span? What used to take only a few minutes now often times takes up to 10 minutes.
    Thanks!

    Same here, the article is very slow to upload even though I have a big upload pipe 50Mbit up. The article is about 280Mb in size. Is this a "normal" behavior?

  • Can I do this with InDesign tags (or XML)

    We are embarking on a new project which will require the use of either InDesign or its major competitor, I have been tasked with determining which to use. Our needs are few but specific. We will be publishing a catalog, the source text of which will be a database. We want to create a text file report from the database with tags embedded (or XML output), so we can flow it right into a template in InDesign with minimal manipulation afterward. I'm concerned with three particular fields - the main catalog entry, manufacturer information and price. The main entry is text of indeterminate length, but usually 80-100 words. The manufacturer information is generally 20-50 characters, the price 6-8 characters. We want it to look like this
    |entry entry this longer catalog entry ends here.
    |                                  Manufacturer info: PRICE
    (with the manufacturer string up against the right margin, I can't reproduce that well in the forum)when the entry ends towards the right side of the page and
    |entry ends here.              Manufacturer info: PRICE|
    with this all on the same line when the main text ends to the left. The string of Manufacturer info and text cannot wrap and must always be aligned to the right margin. How would you do this with InDesign's tagging system?

    You cannot 'tag' specific a layout. You
    i must
    tag every element with its
    i function
    only -- in this case, 'catalog_entry' and 'manufacturer_info'. That has nothing to do with what the layout looks like.
    Now how would you get this effect with ID?
    One way is to insert a Right Indent Tab at the end of each catalog entry instead of a hard return; the Manufacturer info follows right after that. Protect the entire Manufacturer info piece from breaking by applying No Break.

  • How do I remove extra space after an image in an ePub created with InDesign?

    I've designed more than a dozen ebooks with InDesign and have recently been having problems with the spacing after images, both images that are anchored in the text or stand-alone and exported through the Articles Panel. Following are a few details:
    • In the Object Export Settings, I have the vertical spacing set to 0 both before and after the images and no breaks added.
    • In the Export panel, I do not have any vertical spacing applied to images.
    • I do not have any Object Style settings applied.
    • It doesn't seem to matter if I anchor the image into the text or have it as a stand-alone image in the Articles Panel with the caption after it in a separate text box, also in the Articles Panel.
    • I broke down the ePub into an html file and did not see any div or span classes that were different between images that are showing correctly vs. incorrectly.
    • Extra space appears in both iBooks on my computer, as well as on my iPad.
    • I converted to a mobi file for the Kindle and the space wasn't there.
    See attached screen shot. There shouldn't be that big gap between the image and the orange caption.
    Any help or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I've tried everything I can think of with the same results over and over!

    Yes. That is the technique I traditionally use to drop an image into text. I even cut and pasted again as you suggested with the same result. Trust me, this is driving me nuts. I'm not doing anything different than before, but my results are different, even within the same document. I'll attach a few examples, all from this same document.
    How the space after my in-line image is supposed to look:
    And then a few of the pages with the mystery gap:

  • How do I create/host interactive articles with embedded video for use in browsers?

    I'm seeking a little guidance -
    How do I create/host interactive articles with embedded video for use in browsers?
    The aim is to bring together video, design, images and writing in one place. A little like Born Presents, but very accessible and user friendly.
    I'm happy using InDesign but want to create interactive articles / magazines that have embeded video files as required. I've been looking at .SWF files but I've come unstuck.
    I want people to view the articles via a blog, ideally with them opening in a lightbox style viewer. It's not intended for tablet viewing and people should be able to view and interact with the files with little effort on their part.
    I think I know how to create these files within InDesign, but I'm not so hot on web design and I'm not sure how to host these online. Does this start coming into the realms of Flash?
    If anyone could point in the right direction I'd really appreciate it - Thank you in advance.

    PDF is one thing. Folios for DPS is another. There is a little bit of
    overlap but not much.
    The interactivity in the folio overlays panel is for DPS only.

  • Is it possible to store script settings with InDesign file?

    Hi,
    I have some crazy idea: is it possible to store script settings with InDesign file?
    In that case scripters will be able to store those settings with file, and when script runs - it can check if those setting exists - if so - script can run without showing dialogue with parameters... (as all necessary parameters stored with indesign file), and of course we can force InDesign to show script parameters dialogue if we run it with alt/option key pressed while running this script. Maybe even different scripts will be able to share those settings and interact with each other.. we will be able to have settings that will be saved with file, or temp settings for current document or session (till InDesign is closed). With eventListeners and startup scripts we will be able to do scripts that would be able to check for updates, and automatically execute when we placing images and text, and so on.. this can be a whole InDesign scripting framework, that allow to write scripts that will use same libraries and ui so we don't have to write everything from scratch everytime and just included required libs..
    so here is 2 main questions for now:
    1) is it possible to store script settings with .indd file
    2) who is intrested in creation InDesign scripting framework (because this only makes sense if many people will use it)
    PS: I know that it's possible to store settings in external file, but this time I'm interested only for saving params with .indd

    Ok, here is the labels parser I end with, actually it works extremely fast!
    Thanks again, Harbs!
    var labels = GetDocLabels(app.documents[0]);
    function GetDocLabels(doc)
        var idmlFile = File(Folder.temp + "/temp.idml");
        doc.exportFile(ExportFormat.INDESIGN_MARKUP,idmlFile); // asynchronousExportFile works, but script fails as it try to execute before file fully exported
        var folder = Folder(Folder.temp + "/temp_idml");
        app.unpackageUCF(idmlFile,folder);
        var designMap = File(folder + "/designmap.xml");
        var valuePairs = GetValuePairs(designMap);
        return valuePairs;
    function GetValuePairs(file)
        file.open("r");
        var contents = file.read();
        file.close();
        var contXML = XML(contents);
        var vals = {};
        for each(var pair in contXML..KeyValuePair)
            vals[[email protected]()] = [email protected]();
        return vals;
    //> START of DELETE FOLDER Function
    function deleteFolder(path)
        removeFolder = path; // path to folder that need to be removed
        filesToRemove = removeFolder.getFiles();
        for(i = 0; i < filesToRemove.length; i++)
            try
                innerFolders = filesToRemove[i].getFiles();
                if(innerFolders.length >= 1)
                    for(f = 0; f < innerFolders.length; f++)
                        innerFolders[f].remove()
            catch(e){}
            filesToRemove[i].remove(); // remove temp files once we done
        removeFolder.remove();
    }//< END of DELETE FOLDER function
    // remove temp files once we done
    deleteFolder(Folder(Folder.temp + "/temp_idml"));
    File(Folder.temp + "/temp.idml").remove();
    // DUMPER FUNCTIONS
    function dump(o)
        out = "";
        for (var p in o)
            out += p + ": " + o[p] + "\n";
        return(out);
    function alert_scroll (title, input)
       if (input instanceof Array)
           input = input.join ("\r");
       var w = new Window ("dialog", title);
       var list = w.add ("edittext", undefined, input, {multiline: true, scrolling: true});
       list.maximumSize.height = w.maximumSize.height-100;
       list.minimumSize.width = 550;
       w.add ("button", undefined, "Close", {name: "ok"});
       w.show ();

  • Working with InDesign and Microsoft Access Databases

    I was wondering if there’s anyway to synchronize Adobe InDesign with Microsoft Access in a way that when changes are made to the INDD file they would automatically be updated in the database.  Does Anyone have any ideas on this?  Is there a third party plugin that would accomplish this or would I need to export xml out of InDesign?

    InCopy would be indeed the best solution for you. InCopy is the little brother of InDesign, But both need to be in the same version to work together flawless.
    InCopy is much cheaper and simpler than InDesign as it is missing layout capacity, but both of you need to understand both applications.
    Generally, if 2 persons are working on the same document they should have the same versions between 2 InDesigns or between InDesign and InCopy, any workflow where IDML is needed should be avoided.
    Why are there so many corrections in your present workflow? If you make your Word Document correct and set it up with styles without any manual format overrides, no hyphenation, no several continuous returns it should reduce the number of corrections on the first place.

  • Vector with InDesign

    Hi All,
    I have a question.
    One of our engravers is asking us to send him a "vector" graphic of the artwork. What kind of formats are "vector" and can I do it with Indesign. The file is .indd
    thanks,
    Alex

    PDF, EPS, AI. Note that any of these formats can *contain* bitmaps, but
    vector information will be retained in vector format.
    Vector artwork (drawings, type) consists of instructions like "start at
    X=0, Y=0, end at X=600, Y=600, draw 2 pt thick black line between those
    points". As such, vector artwork has no maximum resolution. It prints at
    the resolution of the output device.
    Bitmap artwork (photos, screencaps) consist of a grid of dot positions,
    each dot position filled in or not filled in, each dot position having a
    color assigned to it (or a lack of color). As such, bitmap artwork
    contains a finite number of dots. That number (expressed generally as
    pixels per inch) determines the maximum resolution the graphic can be
    printed at.
