Incorrect amount of RAM showing up

I have a Powermac G5 DP 2.3 Ghz desktop, it has 5Gb of ram installed (4 X 1Gb sticks & 4 X 256Mb sticks)...However, when I look at the "Mac info" screen, it is only showing up as 3Gb!! When I check using utilities, it shows my 1Gb sticks as being 512Mb sticks???!! What's happening and how do I change it??
Thanking you all in anticipation of good info and fixes!!!!!
Chris

If the RAM is not paired in the correct slots, a DIMM will be reported as 1/2 its capacity.
Unfortunately, if the RAM is in the correct slots, bad DIMMs or bad slots will also cause the reporting discrepancey.
RAM should be paired from inside out, one of each pair in each bank:

  • Activity Monitor reports incorrect amount of RAM

I have an early '09 Mac Mini 2.0 Ghz. I bought a 2GB stick from crucial and installed it in the empty slot without a hitch, I was nervous, but ifixit was a great help. If I look at the "About this Mac" screen, it clearly now says 3GB. If I then click look under the system profiler, all is well there also. 1-1GB + 1-2GB for a total of 3. If I open Activity Monitor, under the pie chart where it is supposed to say the total amount of RAM installed on the machine, it says 2.75GB. What gives? This one really has me stumped. Strange thing is that if I add up the "free:" and "used:" from the column on the left, it adds to 3GB.
I check my other Macs, all 4 display the correct amount in activity monitor. 3 of them running Snow Leopard and 1 G4 running Leopard. I called Apple support and the guy I talked to was unsure, but said that I should call Crucial. Called them, and the guy told me he was CERTAIN that the RAM was fine if it was up and running without crashing, which it is. He said it would either not startup, or it would be crashing regularly. I downloaded a RAM testing software, recommended by the crucial guy, called rember. Ran it, and all tests passed.
A few months ago, shortly before installing the RAM, I was given an old G3 iBook. I wanted to put some software on it for my daughter and hooked it up via Target Disk Mode to my Mini. Soon after it was connected, I smelled an electrical fire. The Mini then shut down and the fan spun at max for over an hour, with no response to the power button and the light off. Eventually I unplugged it, then later plugged back in and restarted. It seemed to be working fine. When I tried to hook up a firewire HD, it wouldn't read it. Under system profiler it said "Unable to read Firewire Device" in red (first time I had ever seen color in the profiler!) letters. I took it to the genius bar and the eventually told me the logic board was bad. Week later got it back with a new LB. About a month later Snow Leopard came out and I then added the RAM and installed it. It had previously been running Leopard.
I know that somewhere along the line, there was an update specifically for '09 Mini's that said something to the effect of... to correct an issue with certain Mac Mini's recognizing certain 3rd party RAM. It was a EFI update!?! maybe!?! or some type of ROM update, I think. I installed that update and got the "Successfully installed" dialog box after restart. I am not certain that the "bad" logic board (TDM firewire issue) had anything to do with the RAM, or even if the issue was present before the new logic board.
Would a replacement logic board be the cause? Maybe I had done the ROM update on the Mini's old logic board, but the new one needs to be updated? Does anyone else have these issues with a Mini or even another computer? Or is it a bug in activity monitor?

You have to look at whether the specs state the GPU RAM is shared with main memory or not.
For example, for the latest Mac Minis, the spec states:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 128MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
    or
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Compare to the high end iMac which simply states:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
All current Macs use integrated GPUs that use shared main memory RAM for graphics save for iMacs with an NVIDIA GT or ATI Radeon GPU, MacBook Pros with the NVIDIA 9600M GPU, and Mac Pros.
On shared machines Snow Leopard is just more honest by noting that memory used by the GPU is not actually available for use by the OS.

  • Finder showing incorrect amount of free space

After the recent Mountain Lion update, my Finder now shows an incorrect amount of free space.
    I have a 500GB hard drive, and I have about 150GB free.
After the update, finder says I have 478.4 GB free?
That looks like the total capacity, after you account for system software. I've done a PRAM and SCM reset, disk verification and repair, but still no joy.
Any thoughts? Is it a bug in the update?

This is probably like the issue that I was having on my MacBook Pro. If you are using Time Machine on a laptop it stores the diffs in a file on your hard drive. This action can be disabled with the terminal command
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
This turns the local Time Machine off. It is up to you if you want to do this, but Finder shows this space as unused since it can be overwritten when needed. It saved me over a hundred GBs of space.

  • I AM STUCK WITH MOZILLA FIREFOX / NOT SHOWN ON MY LAPTOP SCREEN / USING HUGE AMOUNT OF RAM IN GENERAL - CAN YOU HELP????

    Hi,
I have copied these problem on you site, as I could explain better then what they did, wich my problem remain the same as they have. And part me explaining what is really happen to my Laptop.
''Mozilla/Firefox 4 will not SHOW on my computer SCREEN.
Firefox won't load onto my computer. I have Windows 7, and each time I try to run the program to install it, it tells me I have another version still waiting to be installed that requires my computer to reboot. When I check "yes" to reboot, my computer reboots but still no Firefox. When I try to uninstall the the old Mozilla program from my Control Panels, there is no Mozilla files or programs listed not in my list of programs but when I go directly to the Windows File on the C: Drive, there's a Mozilla program file there. WHen I go into that file check, I attempt to open the uninstall program. I get an error message that says something to the effect of: "the version Mozilla on this computer is not compatable with my OS." Something about it being and 86bit program. My Firefox 3.6 worked fine 2 days ago. What's wrong??? ''
'''Firefox 4 using huge amounts of RAM on sites with Java scripts
I have been observing Firefox using huge amount of RAM when I am on sites that use Java Scripts to rotate images. I have tried a couple of different sites and have monitored the RAM usage. With Java script enabled Firefox 4 continues to grow its RAM usage by about 10MB a minute. I have had the usage hit as high as 1.5GB. As a comparison I have monitored the same sites in Internet explorer and have not seen the same issue. - Just to eliminate a site issue.
Turning off Java Script solves the issue and eventually frees the RAM.

    My experince with Mozilla Firefox:
Here what really happen when I install the Mozilla Firebox on my La[top you can see the file is there but when I click the program to open its does not shown on the screen but when I check with WTM (Windows Task Manager) its shows that is ON and you can only witness the laptop going very slow and I have to reboot it, and I can not install any other Mozilla :( because of the same problem and all the above.
I really need Mozilla to work as soon as possible due to important deadlines I have pendent, and i can only use Chrome but is not my ideal program. Can you help me , please ?????
    Thank you

If it opens in safe mode, you may have a problematic add-on. Try the procedure in the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.

  • Amount of RAM useful limited to processor speed?

I have heard that at a certain point the amount of RAM you throw in your computer won't help past a certain processor speed. If this is true, is there a chart out there that will show these limits?
Or if anyone has any opinions as far as a:
    Dual 2.7Ghz (G5)
    Dual 1.8Ghz (G5)
    Dual 800Mhz (G4)
    all PowerPC
    thanks,
    T

Without a list of applications, you could be starving your apps, especially if they need to be open and active. If you work on large photoshop files and not smallish, it is impossible almost to have too much (and you would need a PCIe G5 to get 10-12GB RAM).
Check page-out; number of swap files; whether you are generating swap files.
just scanning and retouching can eat up 2GB RAM.
OS X uses free memory to cache windows, disk I/O, and those won't show up looking at Activity Monitor.
Virtual memory can be 'requested' or 'allocated' but not used, too.
I saw people with 512-768MB be shocked at what a difference even light use (email, web, writing, etc) it was to upgrade their G5 to 1.5GB RAM. There are also programming changes that go into a G5 that are totally different from G4s.
But it has nothing to do with cpu, front side bus.
And no matter what, a nice fast 10K Raptor boot drive always helps

  • Satellite L100-179 - Can't use the full amount of RAM

    Hi,
I have the above laptop computer and for a while have been running Windows XP with the RAM it came with, I've now purchased 2 matching 1GB sticks, after checking the max RAM allowed, the problem is that when I install them Windows only reports 896MB of RAM installed.
Latest BIOS is installed and I have changed the MAXMEM setting in Windows, but still no go. Both chips are fully operational (installed into another laptop and the correct amount is shown), my question is how do I get this laptop to recognise the full amount of RAM I have installed.
    Regards

    Hi buddy,
Its hard to say something... What new RAM modules you bought exactly?
I mean theoretically they are not compatible
How much RAM will be showed in BIOS?
Maybe the missing memory capacity is reserved for the graphic card and internal other devices.

  • WindowServer is taking up a ridiculous amount of RAM

I just noticed that WindowServer is taking up a ridiculous amount of RAM on my computer. It is not slowing my computer down at all, it is more just odd than actually causing a problem (i.e. when i opened up finale or another large application, the WindowServer RAM usage dropped back down to 244 mb).
Any ideas as to why? This has happened twice in the past hour, seemingly without reason.

Remove the field which contains the withholding tax information (field BSEG-QSSHB) from your display

If you want to display the withholding tax information, double-click on the document number and
    subsequently choose 'Withholding tax'.

    Hi,
If you want to check amounts of withholding tax for the vendors, you have some options to view it. You can access the WITH_ITEM, LFC1 tables by SE16. You have too the S_P00_07000134 report. This report is developed for the Colombia but I already used for the another country with the ABAP development for this country.
Also you can use table join BSIK and WITH_ITEM by SQVI for the open items and BSAK and WITH_ITEM for cleared items. It is more simple and fast.

If you were instructed to call them, then that's what you should do. They will probably need to verify your identity before helping you with the security question.

  • How to find out the amount of ram a computer can hold

I want to know how to find out what is the max amount of ram my computer can actually take advantage of, rather than tell you my model and you tell me what is the max because I know it varies according to the model of the Computer
But if you'd like to help the other way, here is my model: Macbook(13-inch, Mid 2010 [unibody]) basically the latest version of the white macbook.

    Pointdexter11 wrote:

That is not a simple question.  I don't think anyone here knows the exact testing process that Apple uses to determine what the max ram will be at the time of release.  This is done during the development process.

  • 1333Mhz Ram showing up as 1600Mhz MacBook Pro 15 Late 2011

    Hi All,
I have a weird problem here.
    I have a late 2011 15inch Macbook Pro. I recently upgraded it to 1333MHZ 8GB (4X2) transcend RAM - (Transcend RAM Model JM1333KSH-4G)
Now the problem is that the transcend RAM specifications show that these are 4GB 1333MHZ RAM but on installing in my Macbook Pro, it shows the frequency as 1600MHZ under "About Mac" menu. I have tried this with 4 different transcend RAMs to make sure that RAMs are ok. All the 4 RAMs show 1600 MHZ in my mac. Can this be a problem with my laptop?
Apple support team suggested to reinstall the OS so that it updates with the correct information. I reinstalled the OS (not clean install, just reinstall), but still it shows 1600MHZ.
Can somebody explain the problem to me? Is this normal ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Vikram

    Hi Dominic,
Thanks for the reply.I really appreciate.
This is one of the safest solution.I can return it but in our region Transcend is a trusted brand with acceptable service and repair. So, there are not too many reasons from moving away from the brand !!
Further, i have tried with 4 different RAMs.All resulted in the same problem. My guess is that either the RAM model or my laptop is having problem.
It would be great if some of our friends who have done a similar RAM upgrade with Late 2011 Macbook pro can share their experiences.
Hopefully, i am not the only one to fall for transcend
    Thanks,
    Vikram

  • Amount in Bar Code is incorrect;Amount in the line item can be used instead

We have a problem in our Brazil company code.
When we have a document with value higher than 5,000.00 BRL it is subject to Pis/cofins tax. In the Boleto (paper) document the amount is after tax deducted. But we see the full amount in the Vendor line item in SAP
When the system reads the bar code and saves this code in the vendor line item during the document change we get a warning message no."8B797: Amount in Bar Code is incorrect;Amount in the line item can be used instead".
And the amount in the Barcode line automatically adjusts itself to the line item amount which is the pre-tax amount (full amount).
Example: Amount in the SAP Invoice doc is R$ 6,268.72
Amount in Boleto (paper) R$ 5,977.22   (after deducting PIS/COFINS) - This amount appears in the bar code but once we press enter after the warning message it automatically adjusts to R$ 6,268.72 .
We tried few notes like 784748 to apply but it says it is obsolete. We are on ECC 6.0 Release level 11.

  • Withholding tax amount is nit showing in FBL1N

    Hello,
When I go to FBL1N and selected "Withholding tax amnt" and "With.tax base amount"from the layout, Withholding tax amount is not showing documents posted through MIRO, but it is showing for documents posted through FB60.
    Can any one kindly advise
    Regards,
    Lakshman.

    Please be kindly aware that:
in Extended withholding tax, the withholding tax information is stored
in table WITH_ITEM. For a vendor or customer line item of table BSEG,
there maybe a lot of withholding tax information and therefore several
    entries in table WITH_ITEM.
It is not technically possible to display a lot of withholding tax
information for a customer or vendor line item in the line item display.
To always keep the data consistent when you use several withholding tax
types, the system does not update the fields, that were originally
filled for the classic withholding tax, for document changes.
All of the relevant withholding tax data is stored exclusively in table
    WITH_ITEM.
It basically does not make any sense to use the withholding tax fields
of the document line items (BSEG-QSSKZ, BSEG-QSSHB, BSEG-QBSHB) with the
    activated extended withholding tax.
    Solution:
Remove the field which contains the withholding tax information
    (fieldBSEG-QSSHB) from your display variant.
If you want to display the withholding tax information, double-click on
the document number and subsequently choose 'Withholding tax'.
Please go through the note 363309.
About MIRO please be informed that You can see the WT data into MIR4 only if You insert them manually. If not the WT tab remains empty but the System correctly will fill the WT data into the FI follow on document.
    I hope this helps.

  • 5300 RAM showing up as 3200 in Quad, any experience with this problem?

Hello, just received a 2 gig kit for my G5 Quad (2 - 1 gig sticks from Crucial). System Profiler shows it's speed at 3200, lower than the original 512 RAM which is 4200. Crucial says it will only reach 4200, but why is the new RAM showing up at 3200? Tried removing original RAM and only using the new, same speed displayed - 3200.
Has anyone had any experience with this oddity? Any idea if the RAM is not performing or the Mac is not giving accurate speed data?
    Thanks, Steve

Memory identified as PC2600 in MDD
    Symptom
Apple Hardware Test identifies the computer's memory as "PC2600" rather than "PC2700".
    Products affected
    * Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)
    * Apple Hardware Test version 1.2.6
    Solution
There is nothing wrong with your computer's memory. This issue is addressed in Apple Hardware Test 1.2.7. If you have version 1.2.6 and are experiencing this issue, contact AppleCare for a replacement disc.
Apple is aware of that. It first showed up in 10.3.0 and has been there ever since. The issue with the above DDR2 is I think different and unique.
With the MDD, Apple used Micron in the system I got, and I added Crucial. Both show up as '2600.'

  • With holding tax base amount is not showing in miro screen

    Dear All
Whith holding tax amount is not showing in withholding tax tab after all posting also.
but with holding tax posting is going on fine. in miro screen in withholding tax tab i am not getting this value correctly but it is showing 0 value.
    help me in this regard.
    Regrds,
    Sami

    Dear Sami,
if the WT datas are zero in MIRO/MIR4 this is due to the Standard System Design. Usually You will have the correct WT data only into the FI follow on document. Only if You insert WT datas manually (wt base amount, wt amount) these will be saved into MIRO/MIR4 as well.
I hope this helps in understanding the System behaviour.
    Have a nice day.
