  • A305 - S6916 incorrect Hard Drive?

I just purchased a  A305 - S6916 Laptop last week. I already put 1 message in the forums here "compressing h/d - A305 - S6916" and his answer was sufficient for me.
My new question is: This system should have a 320 Gig hardrive. I understand that the vista home premium OS takes up a lot of hard drive space but it couldn't possibly take up 80 Gigs right? Am I wrong? 80 Gigs??!?!? When I took this laptop out of the boxd, I had 240/288 Gigs. Doesn't that imply that I have a total of only 288 Gigs? There is no other hard drive on this laptop; no other drives I see.
Should't I have 320 Gigs as promised? Where is the other (320-288) 32 Gigs ? Where is it listed? hardrive capacity total says 288 Gigs.
That's 32 Gigs plus 48 Gigs off the bat on a brand-new unused computer. 80 Gigs for the OS?!?!?
Where is the other 32 gigs @?
Do I possibly have the incorrect hard drive?
Thankyou in advance for helping me w/ this issue.
    Solved!

Here is some data on a hard drive I recently upgraded:  Diagnostic readout capsuled for your reading.  Take care.A 120-GB HDD appears as 111.75 GB after Windows is installed due to Binary numbering system.
3 GB is paging file ( 1.5 times RAM ). That makes 108.75 GB.
2 GB hibernation file ( = RAM ). That leaves behind 105.75 GB.
15% total HDD space for system restore. That leaves behind 89 GB.
Vista installation is around 15 GB. That leaves behind 74 GB.
You say you put 20 GB of stuff. That leaves behind 54 GB.
About 1 GB for explorer internet cache ( adjustable ).
Uninstall files for Windows updates ( hidden in Windows folder ).

  • Incorrect Print Driver?

Recently, we began having problems printing a barcode label through a SATO printer.  Essentially, the font is wrong, causing the barcode to be unreadable.
Basically, whenever we RDP from Win7 or a thin client (I say newer, but we have only tested on one), we seem to be getting the wrong print driver for our SATO printer. I tried searching around to find out how RDP decides what driver/settings to use, but have
    not had much luck.
We have tried the following scenarios:
    Print directly from XP: works
    Print directly from Win7: works
Print through Citrix from XP: works
Print through Citrix from Win7: works
Print through Citrix on thin client: works
Print through RDP from XP: works
Print through RDP from Win7: fails
Print through RDP from thin client: fails
Print through Citrix from thin client (Same one): works
What could cause this behavior, and how do I fix it? Not using RDP is not an option.
    Update:
I tested at my local site with a thin client, and it works.  So now, one site's thin clients do not work, while another's do.

At my site, the server is running Windows 2008 R2.
The printer is not redirected.  It is a shared printer installed on the print server (or in the testing scenario shared from my laptop, but same results).  Regardless, any way I look at it, the driver is SATO CL412e.  When I go into the About
tab I see the same version and build number as well.
This is why it is confusing.  From everything I know to check, the print driver is exactly the same.  However, the behavior definitely is not.  How is it that when I RDP from my laptop (Win7) it somehow uses what appears to be a bold font,
but when I do so from literally any other scenario it is correct?  In the case of the other site, even the thin client is incorrect (same behavior as Win7 RDP to server).

  • HP Pavilion DV7-6154nr incorrect sound driver?

Hello, i purchased this laptop a few years ago, and since then I've had to reformat and upgrade my windows install.
After the first time I did a hard-drive format, i noticed my audio quality was MUCH worse, and my lap was NOT using the intergrated Subwoofer(Beats Audio). I have audio, but its not the same quality.
I have been advised to install the IDT sound drivers for my model, but I still can't access the beats audio interface after, nor will the subwoofer or enhanced sound work.
After installing the recommended sound drivers, I go to Control Panel>Sound and attempt to find anything with a hint of the beats audio interface or settings, but all I see is "2-High Definition Audio Device" speakers, and Device manager lists 2 audio interfaces, "AMD High Definition Audio Device" and " High Definition Audio Device"
I'm pretty sure theres nothing wrong with my speakers, they just stopped using the enhanced sound and subwoofer after my reformat, right after in fact.

  • Info showing incorrect hard drive space

Inside the finder the hard drive is showing about 23 gigs used after deleting user file (5g applications, 12 gig library, 6 gig system, 15 megs user) and creating new one (in order to sell) but get info on the hard drive icon is showing 52 gigs used... could this be right?
    thanks

    Hello,
Ok. I have a 750G SSD drive on a mac pro retina.  Finder says I have 605G available.  While I about this mac says 215G available.  I have tried to turn off timemachine so I can have the correct numbers.
10.8.3 osx is my OS, I have 16G of Ram and 2.7Ghz intel core i7.
When is apple going to fix this finder bug.  And from reading the thread i get the impression that someone at apple thinkgs this is the correct behavior for finder.  That is flat wrong, I am a developer and I can tell you that available memory should ALWAYS be correct.  I have run a verify on my SSD to get the disk on par.
As I no longer trust my apple disk my next steps are to back up and move to another machine.  And then start calling apple to have this fixed.
So when is this to be fixed??

  • Installed incorrect coreAudio driver and cannot uninstall

I've done something very stupid... I was misinformed by a friend and installed COREaudio driver v8.03 on my 2.9GHZ macbook pro with 10.8.2 Mountain Lion. I installed COREaudio v8.03 and now Ableton live does not pick up midi signals and every time I open Ableton, I get a message telling me that "Required software extensions are missing" and clicking ok redirects me to an anti piracy website called www.paceap.com but from what I've read, Pace is essentially a nasty piece of malware disguised as anti piracy software and I have no desire to install this.
The obvious soloution would be just to uninstall the COREaudio driver, but I can't figure out how.  There is no uninstaller and the audio folder in library which should contain the COREaudio files is empty with the exception of a folder named 'Digidesign' but my mac won't let me delete it as it is a required file.
Any help as to how to either uninstall this version, revert back to the built in COREaudio driver that came with my mac or even a different driver that would work would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have no way of knowing what you did, but you can either restore from the backup you made before wrecking your system, or do a clean reinstallation of OS X.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For details of how this works, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Transfer only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Reinstall your third-party software cautiously. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.

  • Bad or incorrect printer driver in SL

I have a network setup that includes a Fedora 11 box sharing my HP 5610 printer via CUPS. The Fedora box can print to the printer without issue. However, when I try to print from my MBP running SL, anything B&W doesn't print, it just spits out a sheet of paper, and anything color will only print magenta, and in the upper corner of the page. I'm fairly certain this is a driver issue with SL (although I can't prove that, I only have two computers right now so no way to test it), but I don't know how to solve it. The Generic Postscript is the driver that behaves as above. If I choose the HP driver, it doesn't even get to the printer. Can't find anything else in the driver listing that would make sense. I'm hoping someone has seen this before and can point me to a quick resolution. I'm also willing to accept potential config issues with CUPS, although this setup did work about 6 months ago with 10.5.X, but it's been a while. I'm going to try to find another machine that I can use to test this, but for now, I'm stumped. Thoughts?
    -Pete

    Pete,
The OfficeJet 5610 is not a PostScript printer, so unless your Fedora box is acting as a PostScript rip, I don't understand why that would be working. Technically it should just work if you use the HP driver for that printer, just make sure you are using the latest HPIJS driver your printer as well. There may be a driver mismatch issue.
    Just trying to help.

  • Wrong DVD drive opens on 2009 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with two DVD drives.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, I've noticed some unusual behavior:
    1.  Ocassionally, the incorrect DVD drive ejects/opens. For example, when I attempt to open the top drive, the bottom one opens, and vice-versa.
    2.  Ocassionally, when I simultaneously burn 2 DVDs of the same items, I find that one of the DVD drives burns all of the items without problems, while the other one only burns a small number of the items.
    3.  After inserting a blank DVD, and selecting the "Burn (item name) to disc" from the right-click menu, a long time passes before the "Are you sure you want to burn..." dialogue box appears.
Has anyone else experienced this constellation of symptoms?  Are they connected?  And what sorts of remedies have worked?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If I am missing what you are asking then please provide instructions as to how to find this error information. You are posting the error message for the exception but not printing the stack trace.
Far as I can tell you are printing more information with each exception (for example "Exception creating Users table") but you did not post what that was, that info would localize the problem.
As a guess the problem is when you extract the fields via the query. You are using named values rather than indexes and you use "select *" rather than specifically naming the columns. Some databases (for example Oracle), require that using names must be in exactly the same order as the query returns them. You have no idea what that order is because you use "select *"
Finally it would be a LOT easier if you wrote classes that did nothing but the database operations. NO GUI CODE. You then test that code to make sure it works. Once that code works then you write gui code which uses those classes. Besides making it easier to understand you are also more likely to get assistance since there is less code to look at.

  • TimeMachine wearing out external USB drives??

I have noticed an issue with external USB drives connected to my iMac. I have been using one as a TimeMachine target and have had to replace three of them over the past two years as they eventually fail and no longer mount. I am not sure if it is an issue with TimeMachine or not, but I have noticed that the USB drive seems to spin up every 15 minutes even if there isn't a backup scheduled, which could be wearing it out prematurely. Once the iMac goes to sleep the drive does not spin up. My third drive started whining a few days back and Disk Utility will no longer repair the drive. Anyone with a similar issue?

    Hiya mem16421,
this is definitely related to timemachine. the following could solve your issue:
{quote: wrote:}{quote}I spoke to apple about it today and they suggested the > following course of action:
    1. disable time machine
    2. delete the spotlight index on the external drive
    3. allow spotlight to rebuild the index
    4. re-activate time machine
The above is from another forum and pertains to 10.5.x. And it shows a console entry that might look familiar to yours. Maybe the failure is due to TM trying to write permanently to an incorrectly formatted drive or a drive that wants to "go to sleep"? (hence my previous comment).

  • One of My Hard Drives not showing up ion desktop

    Hi
I've got one internal hard drive that will just not show up on the desktop or finder windows I can see it in disk utilities and everything is ok it was working no problems yesterday but since I have had to do a reformatting of my system disk and reinstall leopard and then snow leopard as my system hard had been case sensitive formatted which was causing some trouble with some software not being able to be installed, so after a complete fresh install I now cannot see one of the 3 hard drive that is in my Mac, any ideasTTFN
    Subcoustic

if you can see it in spotlight then you should be able to use the go menu. I suspect you are entering the path incorrectly. the drive might have a hidden flag. run the following terminal command
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. see if the drive shows up after that.

  • Windows 8.1 Random Slow Startups, "Improper Shutdowns"

Is this the right subforum? I almost chose frezes/hangs but that's not exactly what it is so...
Please note that this is a copy/paste from another forum where I sought help. Today is another day from the one referenced in the indented text below. In fact, my system had a clean and safe boot with no speed issues or stalling tonight. The issue is not consistent. Though I was seeking help at another forum, I grew uncomfortable with the steps asked of me (deleting caches and temp files that I'd rather keep and using a third-party defragger; getting standoffish when I requested explanation for why I was being asked to run three or more "cleaner" programs and if defragging was honestly necessary on a mostly-new machine that just got a clean bill of health from HP) and was brushed aside with something of an attitude. Here's the original info on the issue:
Alright, so, yesterday I noticed that it seemed to take a little longer than usual to start up my laptop (HP Pavilion 17-7042nr with Windows 8.1 64-bit; I've only had it a short amount of time and it was purchased refurbished). I didn't think too much of it, however, since I was starting it at the same time as my seven-year-old Vista machine so by comparison it was still way faster (20+ seconds vs. the old one's 2 minutes). After that, didn't think anything of it...
Today, however, I started it up on its own and it took far too long compared to how it used to behave. I've noticed this a few times in the past, but always figured Windows was adjusting itself after I'd installed stuff etc. But since there was no need for it to do that this time, I got suspicious and started looking in the event viewer. To my shock, it claimed that the last shutdown was improper and that's why it took forever; it was actually rebooting.
Trouble is, as far as I knew, no it most certainly did not shut down improperly. I turned it off using the power button, which is set from the power plan to perform a shut down. It did the normal thing: processed the shut down, turned off the screen, and shortly after turned off all system lights except of course the one to indicate that it was plugged in. All seemed well, and was not slower than usual or anything of that sort. So I have no clue why or how it's shutting down improperly.
But not only that, I tracked it back and several times, as far back as the 19th of February (as well as a couple of times while it was in HP's custody for unrelated maintenance; they apparently did not notice it, either, as it was given a clean bill of health before return) this has been occurring. I've transferred a ton of files, settings, programs, etc. since then so I really didn't want to do a Restore. I did, however, consider it... only to discover that my previous Restore Points before the system was returned by HP have been destroyed. So no chance of going back before the 19th, even if I wanted to (I don't, frankly).
I have no clue what's going on, but here's the events from the first ever time it happened:
the logoff/power down is listed as:
    Information    2/19/2015 5:09:11 AM    Kernel-Power    109    (103)
--  "The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition."

-- "The last shutdown's sucess status was true. The last boot's success status was true."

--"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) did not load: dam"
Those were from the 19 of February, the first time it seems to have happened. The most recent (today) incident is very similar, but not entirely identical.
    The shutdown was:
    Information    3/17/2015 5:12:16 AM    Kernel-Power    109    (103)
-- "The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition."
Upon boot the seemingly relevant bits are:
    Information    3/17/2015 4:47:55 PM    Kernel-Boot    20    None
--"THe last shutdown's success status was true. The last boot's success status was true."

--"The operating system started at system time 2015-03-17T21:47:45.491075600Z." (( What even is up with that time??? ))
    Critical    3/17/2015 4:48:01 PM    Kernel-Power    41    (63)
--"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    Error    3/17/2015 4:48:24 PM    EventLog    6008    None
--"THe previous system shutdown at 5:12:03 AM on 3/17/2015 was unexpected."
I tried googling, to no avail, other than a suggestion that it might be caused by some sort of system file issue. So I ran "sfc /scannow" in an admin-level command prompt and when it was finished it said: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."
I tracked down the log file and it's rather huge but toward the end I found that "Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB" was corrupted. Naturally, I investigated... But according to the thread I found it's some kind of printer-related thing, and I've never even connected a printer to this system, much less a Canon brand one as the info I found suggested. In fact, the thread I linked claims that it shouldn't cause any huge issues, so... Probably not the cause of my shutdown issues, which are more pressing. Thus, I can't find anything to indicate what's causing this problem.
The only thing I can think of that I had done around the 19th was I was trying to get rid of Beats Audio crap on my laptop. (Don't even get me started on that hot mess!) So I'd been swapping between the Windows default audio drivers and versions of the Realtek High Definition Audio from both HP and Realtek. But I never had a corrupt install and I don't recall installing one over the other without uninstalling first, so I don't know if that's an issue. Somehow, I doubt it, especially since this issue isn't consistent. Then again, I don't consistently use the audio on my computer so who knows. (UPDATE: Used audio extensively, but it managed a clean shutdown after.)
After all lights are off and the system is shut down, unless I've been using it on battery and it needs a charge, I unplug it to conserve energy. I only ever do this if the battery has a full charge, so I don't think that should be an issue even though hybrid shutdown/fast boot is some kind of hibernation-shutdown combination. I'd prefer to keep fast start/hybrid boot enabled because, well, it's convenient... and I'm extremely hesitant to tamper with the UEFI settings etc. But, of course, if that's the only fix then I'd prefer it to possible hard drive damage caused by the supposed/apparent improper shut down.
Also of note: nothing is overclocked or running outside specifications, as far as I know. My system stats are:
    Windows 8.1 64-bit
    AMD A10-5745M APU
    AMD Radeon HD 8610G
    UEFI BIOS Mode
    Secure Boot Enabled
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Now, for extra details. Things that were done during the process included looking for unnecessary startup items (not the real issue to be honest; when it doesn't forcibly reboot due to "improper shutdown" the startup is extremely speedy) and looking at some logs. In particular, here's the speccy log created for my system: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/vIEkYCelmSRyJjuJyye2jgD
I also had to run several "cleaner" tools, which included installing CCleaner, though I chose some files I wished to keep / thought may be important to not just delete willy-nilly. I don't like to randomly delete things that could come back and bite me in the rear, after all. And I'm honestly confused how any of that would related to Windows having inconsistent and seemingly random "improper shutdown" issues which cause it to reboot instead of using fast boot. (I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying that I don't logically see how it'd make a difference and when I attempted to ask I was brushed aside.)
Like I said, by all appearances it seems to shut down properly. It has also never crashed on me. Nor has it ever blue screened or randomly rebooted.  This is very much a silent, behind-the-scenes issue.

    Hi @Alley_Kitten ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 17 f042nr Notebook and issues with performance issues or improper shutdowns.
I checked the specs of your system and with what you have posted here you have the incorrect Amd driver installed.  Your's as per your product page is a AMD Radeon HD 8610G . I would go to the device manager and remove all graphic driver, check the box for the driver as well.
Here is a document on recovery options that are available. I do use the refresh your pc method with Windows 8. Please read all the documentation before starting the operation.
    Hope this helps you out.
    Thanks.

  • Screen goes black during boot

    Hi guys,
I've just finished installing Arch for the first time after using Ubuntu until now.
My problem is the when grub starts the boot process the screen goes blank and I can do nothing but restart.
The only way the system boot up is when I add "nomodeset" in the kernel line of grub's entery.
But as the wiki says, while using nomodeset gnome shell only works in fallback mode.
    I've got a ATI X800 (R430) which doesn't suporrted by catalyst.
Just for the record, while i was running Ubuntu everything (including full gnome shell) worked as it should with the open source drivers (I've installed xf86-video-ati).
Any suggestions on what can I do to solve this?
Arch is really amazingly fast and I don't want to have to go back to ubuntu. pls help.

vwyodajl wrote:Are you sure you set up your ATI card properly? I have nvidia but generally when I have to use nomodeset is because it is trying to boot into a incorrect video driver. Also it happens for me on new installs untill I get the card properly setup.
    HTH
Is there a guide in the wiki for doing this? I've looke at the "ATI" part of the wiki and nothing there seems to help nor show how to config the card.
    Jigoku:
I've tried vga=773 even before using nomodeset and it didn't work.
To be more accurate it work for like 3 seconds until the boot process loads somthig like that starts with udev (I don't remember the full name).
But this is not different then when I try to load without "nomodeset".
To sum it all up, I get blank screen (no video signal) always unless I use nomodeset.

So did both 4GB modules work when installed alone?
I'm running 2 x 4GB Corsair RAM in my W700 without any problems. I upgraded the memory quite a while ago, and therefore can't remember which BIOS version I had at that time. In the change log of version 1.11 however it says under problem fixes: "System hang may occur at POST depending on ME setting." So if  ME settings refers to memory there might be a small chance to fix the problem by flashing the latest version 2.15.
