Incorrect display of half notes?

Question

I wanted to write one half note (o) follwed by three 8th notes and when I connect the half note to the 8ths the center on the half note gets filled and looks like the other notes in duration. I checked the piano role and the actual duration of the half not had not changed just the view of the note. Tried options etc and read the manual ... but can't see what is wrong.
any ideas?

Hi there,
It's not normal to beam together longer and shorter notes. In most notation conventions, they would be put on different layers. You can achieve what you want, sort of, by turning off "No Overlap" in the parameters area at the top left when you have the score window open. The downside is that you get many ties over the notes making up the half-note. See page 734 of user manual.
If you're looking to create copy using typesetting conventions, you'll need to check out what Logic calls "Independent Voices", which will allow you to have notes of different lengths appear at the same time. These are normally, for example, stem up on the higher notes and stem down on the lower ones on a single staff but will vary depending on usage.
