Incorrect file sizes shown in Finder over NFS and permissions issues

Hi there
This is a problem that existed for me in Leopard and has not been resolved in Snow Leopard.
I have an XSan with a Leopard server sharing over NFS and AFP. When I connect from a Leopard or Snow Leopard client over NFS the file sizes in Finder are incorrectly displayed. My Tiger clients work perfectly.
Also, although it says I have read write access to the files over NFS I cannot save over an existing file when I make changes to it, I instead have to create a new version of it and remove the old one.
Check the link to show a grab of one of the folders in question, the upper window is what the NFS shows me, the lower AFP. If you Get Info on the files over either connection the byte count is identical.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

This is a problem that existed for me in Leopard and has not been resolved in Snow Leopard.
Have you filed a bug report with Apple?
http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
If not, there's less of a chance they'll know about it and help fix it for you.
Do things look OK from the command line in Terminal?
It would probably be useful to use a tool like Wireshark to check out what each protocol is sending over the wire. That could at least narrow it down to being a client or server issue.
Thanks

  • Incorrect QuickTime file size shown in Finder

I have a few QuickTime movies that I moved out of Aperture in order to move back into the newest iPhoto. When I attempted to sync my iPhoto library with my iPhone, the videos would not sync, so I investigated further and found that while they play perfectly fine under both iPhoto and in QuickTime 7 and QuickTime X, the file size in Finder is showing each movie as only a few KB in size, when in fact they are dozens of MBs in size.
What the heck is going on? Permissions repair did nothing, I can't think of what else to try.

I would suspect you moved the .mov file, but at some point in processing and saving things you have failed to note that the .mov file should be saved as a "self contained" movie, so that the actual movie content is left somewhere on your hard-drive. The .mov file will play on the computer, because it is pointing to the location of the content, which is accessed and used, but when you move (or try to) the .mov file, the content is left behind on the hard drive, and only the container is moved. Thus there is nothing TO play in the new location, there is just the container with no content.

  • Incorrect files sizes displayed in the finder

My early 2009 iMac with 4GB Ram, 650Gb HD, running OSX Snow Tiger (latest version) is showing incorrect file sizes for many things.  For example, a 4.21GB DVD will show on the desktop as being 4.58GB... any thoughts??

  • 4GB File Size Limit in Finder for Windows/Samba Shares?

I am unable to copy a 4.75GB video file from my Mac Pro to a network drive with XFS file system using the Finder. Files under 4GB can be dragged and dropped without problems. The drag and drop method produces an "unexepcted error" (code 0) message.
I went into Terminal and used the cp command to successfully copy the 4.75GB file to the NAS drive, so obviously there's a 4GB file size limit that Finder is opposing?
I was also able to use Quicktime and save a copy of the file to the network drive, so applications have no problem, either.
XFS file system supports terabyte size files, so this shouldn't be a problem on the receiving end, and it's not, as the terminal copy worked.
Why would they do that? Is there a setting I can use to override this? Google searching found some flags to use with the mount command in Linux terminal to work around this, but I'd rather just be able to use the GUI in OS X (10.5.1) - I mean, that's why we like Macs, right?

I have frequently worked with 8 to 10 gigabyte capture files in both OS9 and OS X so any limit does not seem to be in QT or in the Player. 2 GIg limits would perhaps be something left over from pre-OS 9 versions of your software, as there was a general 2 gig limit in those earlier versions of the operating system. I have also seen people refer to 2 gig limits in QT for Windows but never in OS 9 or later MacOS.

  • Incorrect file size/date

I had posted this subject about a month ago and did not get any replies... so here it is again
a various times quicktime files and several other type of files will be shown as having a size of 7k but is obviously larger... when I open it... then it will show the correct file size in the finder.
at various times I will also get file icon as text file on files that are not text files... if I copy/move these files to a diff location the icons will then become correct.
file dates are not correctly being shown on certain files... example:
when I look at my quicken 2005 backup folder's window... all the files say april 3, 2005... but when I look at the files from within the quicken application... opening the file from quicken's menu... the dates are correct? again if I change their location they then show the correct date.
    has anyone had this problem?

They show the same date because what your looking Window at The File Explorer UI and Photoshop Is using a Windows File Open Dialog are showing the same File date. I ask where you were seeing dates in Photoshop.  It turns out your looking at file open which is using a windows dialog.   Windows file system records date for files in it file system directories and knows where application store dates in some files formats. Like Image files metadata.  Windows UI has options to display many of these dates.  Some date may be redundant however if there is an option to show a date it will be stored in a different location.  Which also means these redundant date may be out of sync if they are updated at different times.  Which date windows shows by default I'm not exactly sure which one that it is or when it gets updated.
If you right click in the dialog column title bar you can select many dates to be displayed some date will not be present in many file formats. Here is a screen capture of Photoshop open dialog have you even seen this.

  • Incorrect file size in download list

Incorrect file size in download list.
Use russian localized Safari. If I download file and it size is 12 Mb then Safari show 12 Gb!

    Hi
You can try the following approach.
First you can download all the records to one file and than using the following
    CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES => FILE_GET_SIZE
You can find the size, when you have size value.
You can do division as per your requirement and loop the internal table and download accordingly

In CS6, why the file size remains same after croping? And how do I reduce the size after each croping? Thx

Select the Crop Tool and check the box [  ] Delete Cropped Pixels and you should see a reduction in file size.  With the box unchecked, the data is still maintained in the document, you just can't see it.

  • 10.4.3 File Size Shown Incorrectly in Finder Window

Tiger 10.4.3 --- Sometimes file sizes don't display correctly in Finder windows. For example, I was just downloading a bunch of large files from an FTP site. They were all 44.1Mb in size. After they finished DL'ing, some of the file sizes showed a much smaller file size. But cmd-I on those files and the correct size is displayed.
Some of these files show up with the correct size, but only after waiting a loooong time...
Can anyone tell me why don't file sizes show up correctly? Or immediately? Any help will be appreciated!

Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?
I'm thinking this is probably a really marginal bug, where Composer isn't telling the Finder to refresh the date as most applications do, but then, Mozilla does a lot of unMaclike things. Eventually the Finder figures out that the files have been updated though. There are probably a host of ways you can force it to update, as you've already discovered. You can also force it to update with a simple AppleScript:
    tell application "Finder"
update every item of window 1
    end tell
This tells the Finder to update everything in the frontmost window to match what's on the disk.

  • File sizes shown to be twice as big in Finder

I work with 2 different Mac Pro towers.  The one at my home has Photoshop cs4 and the one at my studio has Photoshop cs6.  The other day I noticed that Finder on my studio computer shows the file size to be twice as big as the finder on my home computer.  The pixel dimension size doesn't change, just the file size.  It shows up that way after I save it on my studio computer. If I take that file home and resave it on that computer then the Finder shows the smaller file size again.  I guess the questions I have are: Is the file size is actually increasing and if so, what could be causing that to happen?  Photoshop shows the files to be the same size, but in the Finder window is where I see the difference.  Holla!!

Sounds like you have "Maximize Compatibility" enabled in the Photoshop which saves the bigger files, and have it disabled in the other Photoshop.
See the control in Preferences > File Handling.

  • Incorrect file sizes in Finder

Was looking at other discussions about file sizes but they didn't seem to reflect the same issue that I'm having. Maybe I misread them.
Since updating to Snow leopard on all my Macs, I noticed that all the files are reflecting about 3-8% more than their actual size. Basically, the Finder is reporting the wrong file sizes. By using a file transfer software like Transmit, the file sizes are reflected correctly. For example, if I download iTunes 9.3, the download file is 93.6MB but the Finder shows 98.2MB. Transmit shows 93.6MB which is correct.
Anyway to fix this annoying issue?

I think the issue has to do with the fact that some programs have not adopted the new method yet. Unfortunately programs like iTunes can be used on on operating systems as far back as Tiger which used the old system. I noticed this several months ago and find it very irritating, especially when trying to do things like burn DVDs/CDs and trying to fill them up as much as possible. The only thing you can do about it is provide feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and hope they fix it in upcoming releases of their software.

  • Osx lion get info reporting incorrect file size

    Hi all,
I am trying to troubleshoot a strange problem I am having with Adobe Revel. Adobe have been helping me to resolve it but my mac is displaying some odd behaviour which I need to explain and which may be affecting the adobe app.
The adobe app creates a library file of pictures and the file should be growing as I download more pictures. If I right click on the folder and "Get info" the folder size shown is smaller than I would expect at 25MB given that it should contain a good number of Jpeg files.
I have downloaded an app called "Grand Perspective" to help me manage disk space and for this particular file it reports a completely different (much Larger) file size than "Get Info" did (155 MB) which is much closer to what I would expect to find and it is growing as more pictures are downloaded.
Any idea what could cause "Get Info" to report the wrong file size.
I have another osx Lion mac with the same software loaded and although a completely different machine, it reports the same file size for this library folder as grand perspective does.
    Any help gratefully accepted.
    Slarti

I'm finding the same behaviour running Lion 10.7.2 and the file with the exact same problem as yours is a Sente (bibliography software) library containing references and pdfs.  'Get Info' reports it as 130KB but I know the file is much much larger than that! Even the Size reported on Get Info shows 874.4MB which is still too small.  If I 'Show Package Contents' on the file and 'Get Info' on the 'Contents' folder which it then shows, I get the correct size of 1.14GB
Apple Tech Support over the phone wasn't able to explain this behaviour.

  • Cannot open database due to incorrect file size

    Hi,
we have a oracle database 8.0.5 and it crashed yesterday. now we cannot open the database (only mount readonly) due to an incorrect filesize of usr1orcl.ora. is there a simple way to open the database?

i'm sorry but it wasnt in archivelog mode.
    the ora error codes are:
ORA-01122: datafile name - failed verification check
Cause: The information in the datafile is inconsistent with information from the control file. This could be for any of the following reasons:
The control file is from a time earlier than the datafiles.
The datafile size does not match the size specified in the control file.
    The datafile is corrupted.
Action: Make certain that the datafiles and control files are the correct files for this database, then retry the operation.

Cause: The size of the file, as returned by the operating system, is smaller than the size of the file as indicated in the file header and the control file. Somehow the file has been truncated.
Action: Restore a good copy of the datafile from a backup and perform recovery as needed.

  • File size deviation between Finder and Quicktime

Today I encountered a weird phenomenon:
Some Quicktime .movs show different filesizes in the finder (e.g. 69,3MB) than the same clip has in Quicktime (Command-I says 34,71MB)
This happens if the clip was opened, truncated and saved (under the same name).
It still occurs after the computer was restartet.
Any idea what this may be?

    Hi
According to the QuickTime help, after you delete parts of a movie, the file size stays the same until you choose File > Save As and select "Save as a self-contained movie". I'm only guessing, but this may be to enable the deletion to be undone, even after the file has been saved.
I guess the Finder is reporting the raw file size, whereas QuickTime is reporting the size of the edited clip.

  • En CS5 reporting incorrect file size

Hi all, I am creating a DVD9 program with 1 video timeline and 3 audio tracks. I exported out of Premiere AME(win 7 pro x64) the video timeline and main audio track(48k wav). I then exported audio only of the other two tracks mpeg audio.
The exported file sizes that show on my hard drive are:
    5.1 gig m2v file
    2.1 gig 48k wav file
    485 meg mpa audio file
    360 meg mpa audio file
In En I imported the video and wav file as a timeline, in the build window it shows the file size as 8.1 gigs, not the appox. 7.2 gig as shown above
I imported the 2 mpa files as assets and added 2 audio tracks to the timeline. When I put either of the mpa assets into the timeline and check the build tab it shows that each mpa file as about 2 gigs.
I confirmed that there is no video associated with the mpa tracks by importing as a timeline and it showed no video track, and triple checked by looking at the file in quicktime movie inspector. I also went back to AME and exported the audio using format dropdown selection as audio only and selected output format of AAC 48k 256 bit rate and got the same result in En
In the project window it showed the 2 mpa files as untranscoded, I even did a transcode in En and that made no difference.
I am at a loss with this one.
Not sure if this matters, the program length is 3.5 hours
    Any thoughts?

Hi Stan, here are some caps of what I am doing
First cap shows the project files as they appear on my HD
This is the project tab with all assets imported
This shows timline imported on the build tab
This shows the build tab after the second audio track is added
This shows the build tab after the third audio track is in
I have also cleared all cache files, and created a new project.
If I drop all the project files into Nero it shows as an 8.1 gig project, not the 12.1 that shows in En.
To try and determine if there is a corrupt file, I brought each file in one at a time as a timeline, and every one came up as oversized.
I have done this many times before going back to CS3, I have never encountered this before. This is the first time doing this in CS5.
