Incorrect focus

Bug Report.
Normally when I change the date on a group of photos focus returns to the item next to the items I just edited the date on.
However, expand all stacks. Do the same edit of dates and focus returns to a photo hundreds away from where I was at.
Best guess, the code that determines where focus should return to is failing to account for the fact that all stacks are expanded.

Dear Wilfred,
In the meantime, I did in fact find something in MetaLink, namely:
Note: 292045.1
Subject: Cursor Focus Is Lost After Using Alt+W To Switch Between Windows in Oracle Forms
Cause: The problem is caused by a forms bug:
The bug is fixed in OracleAS 10g / Oracle Developer Suite 10g Rel 2 (not due for release until March / April 2005)
There is no backport one off fixes available for Forms 6i, 9i or 10g (Rel 1). For these releases, the user must work-around by manually clicking in the window / field in order for cursor focus to be returned, and keyboard input to be accepted again.

Wilfred,
Does this mean that no bugfix is planned for Releases prior to 10g (Rel 2)? Which ultimately requires an upgrade to this release, if one wants to avoid this?
I would appreciate your interpretation on this.
Thanks,
Randy

• Incorrect focus using replacement bee in tableview

Hello SDN friends,
Situation: TableView cell with a checkbox replacement bee in one of the cells. When I tab within the tableview. The cursor is jumping to the next field. When I entered the field with the checkbox replacement bee the focus is place on the cell instead of focusing on the checkbox directly. We are working on the WAS 6.20 SP54.
On another customers system WAS 6.20 SP30 it works fine.
Does any encountered the same problem?
Can it be fixed without using JavaScript?

• Incorrect Focus when Changing Item with Mouse

Dear Colleague,
Quite often, when the user navigates to a new item with the mouse and not with the keyboard (e.g. Tab key) or explicitly via the toolbar item (next item), then the cursor ends up in the item of interest, but when the user proceeds to, for example, activate the associated LOV, then the cursor focus switches back to the original, i.e. previous item.
Is this a known bug? I would appreciate any tips here.
My forms are running within Oracle AS 10g.

• Focus on wrong window using spaces

When I do the following:
1. assign preview to space 4 in System preferences, spaces
2. open some documents in Preview.
3. switch to another space (say, space 1)
4. open other documents (say, a bunch of pictures)
I get the following behaviour:
The finder switches automatically to space 4 (normal), and then, instead of my pictures appearing as the first window, they appear in a window behind some of the other documents already opened (in step 2).
Isn't that weird?
Now, when I continue by doing:
5. Put the opened bunch of pictures in front.
6. Close their window.
7. Go back to space 1.
8. Open the same bunch of pictures again.
This time, the finder switches to space 4, and the pictures correctly appear in a window in front.
If I start again with steps 1 to 4 but with a new set of pictures, they again appear behind some other document.
Very weird.
It looks like a bug and I guess there is no "solution" for the moment, but I wonder if this is common behaviour. Has anyone got the same behaviour?

I have the same incorrect focus problem when opening a document in a Space different from the Space it’s assigned.
For me it is mostly when I double-click on a website link in my e-mail application in Space 1 and my browser (Safari) is in Space 2. The web page I wanted to go to is behind a previously opened browser window. It’s more of an annoyance than a problem. Safari offsets new windows so the unfocused window is sticking out on the side from the focused window and I just click on it to have it become the focused window.
I read on another posting that a user was running a beta of 10.5.3. Perhaps the problem will be resolved in that update if enough people report the bug to Apple. I’ve seen on this forum a link to send a message to Apple for recommending changes and new features. Guess I’ll need to go find it.

• 7D Focusing Anomalies With 24-105mm IS Lens

Expert advice will be appreciated, please. My Canon EOS 7D (not MarkII), coupled with my Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS lens has started misbehaving. The lens is 8-9 years old, the 7D has possibly 50K shutter actuations. Shooting in a relatively dark forest recently, on tripod, using self-timer for release, ISO200, matrix metering, shutter down to ½ second or slower, some use of internal flash, fully-charged battery, using AF Point Expansion for focusing, some of my images (totally hit and miss, random, unpredictable) are not focused properly. About 15-20% of the images show a focus considerably different than where DPP shows (red square) the camera was directed to focus. For example, in many of the incorrect images, DPP shows the red square clearly on a large tree trunk (which agrees with my placement), but the trunk is out of focus and a small maple vine 2-3’closer to the camera than the trunk is sharply focused. This seems to have occurred with IS turned on and off, but I cannot be sure of that (EXIF info does not tell).
To subsequently analyze the problem, I took dozens of images,handheld, with the same camera and lens, but using an appropriate ISO for handholding, and in a brighter outdoor setting (again, matrix metering, AF Point Expansion, IS on, no flash). I found the same situation – hit and miss out of focus conditions, with DPP showing correct AF point placement but the camera/lens again focusing closer than the AF-indicated subject. In some cases, images were totally out of focus. In others, the AF point (red square) was on a subject dozens or hundreds of feet away, and the entire image was out of focus except for some shrubbery 20’away and completely over at the left of the frame (this happened with more than one image). Turning IS off did not really make a difference that I could detect in this handheld test. Changing from AF Point Expansion to Manual Selection (single AF point) resulted in fewer problem images, percentagewise. Overall, the test was producing about the same percentage of incorrectly-focused images as the previous shoot (about 25%).
Changing to an old 35mm camera kit lens (Canon 28-90mm, AF, no IS) resulted in no image problems, whether using Manual Selection or AF Point Expansion. The problem may thus (??) have been narrowed to the use of IS and/or AF Point Expansion and the 24-105 L IS lens, or a combination of those. I was quite pleased and surprised with the quality of the images coming from the non-IS 28-90 kit lens, and its focusing accuracy!
One other factor. During the real shoot, using the 7D on a tripod, shooting with self-timer release (10 second), atg one time and for one exposure the timer stopped beeping and its light extinguished, and the camera just froze up. Powering it down and back up seemed to clear the problem. I do not know whether the lens IS was turned on or off.
Advice would be appreciated. Does this sound like a lens (IS) problem, or a problem with the dual Digic processors in the 7D, a combination of those, or what? Images shot with the 24-105 during this test that are properly focused are very sharp, as they always have been. What further testing would you suggest? This is a "first" for this camera and lens, both of which have been bulletproof until now. Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Thanks, ScottyP. Your response, and that of ebiggs1 (thank you, also) prompted me to do some additional testing with this lens, specifically testing AF Point Expansion versus single AF point (EXIF shows as Manual Selection). ebiggs1 is correct -- I do not think there is anything wrong with this lens or camera (whew!). And, yes, ScottyP, I did take this exact picture before with this lens, using AF Point Expansion and placing the AF point in the same place -- and that image hangs next to my desk as a gorgeous framed 20x30 enlargement.
My testing (fairly extensive, very carefully planned and executed), shows the same (but very infrequent) anomalies as the original images that started this thread, whether using AF Point Expansion or Manual Selection -- both failed on occasion during my testing. But, I have learned from the testing, and that will be valuable in future shooting (still learning after 60+ years of shooting, mostly with Canon). The summary is that this is not a problem to be concerned with -- as I hope is explained below.
This testing appears to validate several things -- all of which are already well known, but provide a good refresher for at least me. First, that "electronic focusing" is excellent but not foolproof. One alternative is to use LiveView and manual focusing when I feel the camera could be fooled by the subject to be focused on (scenics, no movement, tripod). Second, consistently correct focus appears easier to achieve when the subject has sharp, well-defined lines, little detail (not complex or intricate), with adequate contrast and adequate brightness (for example, small Fall leaves, all the same yellow color, and at substantial distance, did not seem to produce the most consistent focusing results compared to larger, simpler, closer subjects). Third, the single AF point may be (believe it or not) too large to achieve the desired result (distant objects, in particular, may be so small within the frame of the single AF point that unwanted subjects may end up being focused on instead of the desired subject) -- the remedy may be to use the even-smaller single-point Spot AF. Fourth, there are a lot of variables in play at once in the making of any one image, and those may or may not be obvious -- the remedy for this, when possible, may be to shoot many images of the same subject, varying whatever technical attributes of the camera or lens are within the photographer's control. For now, and based on this testing, I will give more thought, when the situation allows, to which AF area to use, and how to use it (placement, size, appropriate subject, etc.). Of course, not much of this applies to my normal subjects -- waterfowl exploding off of a body of water. Thanks again for the ideas.

• InDesign «Reveal (link) in Finder» focus on wrong Finder window

I use «reveal in Finder» many times a day. If I use it to reveal a link or a InDesign document, since updating to Mavericks it always takes me to the wrong window. It opens the right folder, but focuses on any other open window. Really annoying. This did not happen with earlier versions.

• Problem with the AF of my new 18-135mm EFS IS STM lens

Hello,
The lens came with the EOS Rebel T5i bundle.
The auto focus is working incorrectly, focusing closer than the detected area. This is happening when I use the viewfinder. When a picture is taken using the “direct view” (LCD display) it focus correctly.
I didn’t use the camera a lot since I bought it, now looking the first pictures I see that this problem is happening since I bought it.
I changed the zoom lens with another Canon camera and then my new Rebel T5i works fine and the same problem happens with the other camera, therefore I’m sure that the problem is in the lens and not in the camera body.
The out of focus is more noticeable when I'm taking pictures in 18mm position to an object farther than 2 meters but it is happening in any zoom position. It is clear when I compare the same picture taken with the viewfinder with one taken with the LCD Display.
I updated the body firmware and the problem continues.
Is it possible to update the lens firmaware? I couldn’t find them in the canon webpage.
I will go into an important trip next week, therefore I will not have time to send the camera to repair.
Any idea?
Thanks!

You may want to rent a lens for your trip and get this lens to service.
You'll want to be sure it really is a problem with the lens (it sounds like it is from your description). Test the lens against a "flat" target (such as a wall). You can hang something on the wall with high-contrast (newspaper works great) and put the camera on a tripod. The idea is that (a) the camera is definitely not moving, (b) the focus target is definitely not moving, and (c) the target is flat and there are no distracting objects in the field of view so it's not possible for the focus system to decide to lock focus on anything OTHER than your intended target.
Next... deliberately turn the focus ring to put the camera out of focus (so that the camera HAS to move the focus). This is mildly tricky with an STM lens since there's no mechanical link from the focus ring to the lens -- it's electronic. The lens only accepts focus input when focus is active (e.g. half-press the shutter button, etc. to wake it up.) I run focus all the way in and test several times, then run focus all the way out and test several times (that way it has to move focus in both directions.)
If the lens is consistently focusing closer, then it will need service.

my cd slot is not reading the cd I put in and spits it back out after a gfew seconds and it used to work fine. I have an imac 21 inches

Your CD/DVD player uses a laser beam that is focused on the disc by a lens, one for CDs and one for DVDs. If this lens accumulates dust the beam will be diffused or incorrectly focused, and the player won't function correctly.

• Camera focus incorrect BBOS 10.3.0.908

Using my Passport device, the camera focuses frequently incorrect. When I tap on the screen first it is in focus, and then blurred again. OS is freshly installed using Blackberry Link recovery. Diagnostics doesn't show an error. Is this a known bug, fixed in the upcoming version?
Thank you,
w.

for pictures, I have stopped using the camera (for now). The software is not fast enough for me, especially the focusing can focus then defocus just when I take the picture.
I now use a third party app named Camera+, it is gorgeous and twice as fast as the stock camera.

• Problem with focus and selecting text in jtextfield

I have problem with jtexfield. I know that solution will be very simple but I can't figure it out.
This is simplified version of situation:
I have a jframe, jtextfield and jbutton. User can put numbers (0-10000) separated with commas to textfield and save those numbers by pressing jbutton.
When jbutton is pressed I have a validator which checks that jtextfield contains only numbers and commas. If validator sees that there are invalid characters, a messagebox is launched which tells to user whats wrong.
Now comes the tricky part.
When user presses ok from messagebox, jtextfield should select the character which validator said was invalid so that user can replace it by pressing a number or comma.
I have the invalid character, but how can you get the focus to jtextfield and select only the character which was invalid?
I tried requestFocus(), but it selected whole text in jtextfield and after that command I couldn't set selected text. I tried with commands setSelectionStart(int), setSelectionEnd(int) and select(int,int).
Then I tried to use Caret and select text with that. It selected the character I wanted, but the focus wasn't really there because it didn't have keyFocus (or something like that).
Is there a simple way of doing this?

textField.requestFocusInWindow();
textField.select(...);The above should work, although read the API on the select(...) method for the newer recommended approach on how to do selection.
If you need further help then you need to create a "Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE)",

• Pausing swfs and audio in a browser when the tab is out of focus

I'm trying to code my flash file so that the html will pause all swfs AND audio when the tab is out of foucs. I found this code on http://frontenddeveloper.net/wiki/index.php?title=JavaScript_and_VBScript_Injection_in_Act ionScript_3 and it works,but not completely. It only pauses the movie clips that are in the Flash file and not any that are exteranlly loaded with audio included.
How can I adjust it to pause the externally loaded swfs that are loaded to a mc within my main movie clip and the audio OR what should I use in place of this code? Someone mentioned on a different post that I needed to use a window.onblur funcition, but they didn't give details.
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.utils.setTimeout;

// method would be to target specific clips using dotpath notation, telling
// each in turn to turn off or on depending on what we need.
// BUT this is just a demo, and what we're really interested in is the
// event-handling mechanism that actually calls this routine, and not the
// routine itself.

JAVASCRIPTS
JavaScript needs to be wrapped in a tag, a cdata, and a closure
function in order to be wrapped up and sent to the browser.
Note that an ActionScript function will replace all instances
of "xxx" with the actual ID used for this SWF.
We're battling some major bugs and crossbrowser idiosyncrasies
here:
1) In Internet Explorer the 'onblur' event is implemented
incorrectly (as opposed to Firefox/Mozilla browsers). It is
wrongly fired when focus is switched between HTML elements
*inside* a window. As a result, we have to use onfocusout
instead of onblur, and keep track of which element is active.
If we focusout and the active element is not the previous
active element, then we haven't actually "blurred" and dont
want to trigger Flash.
2) Firefox has problems interpreting both getElementById and
document["swf"] when dealing with "twicebaked" object/embeds.
Adobe's method of finding the swf fails to address the fact
that document["swf"] sometimes returns an array in this
situation rather than an object ref, and getElementById
sometimes confuses name and id.
3) When a window is created in Firefox, it doesn't actually have
"focus" (event though it appears to) and therefore won't "blur"
unless you actually click in it first, i.e if you open up a
window, then immediately send it to the background, it never
gets the command to halt the flash. So we have to explicitly
focus the blasted thing to get it to work properly.
4) Because of irregularities caused by Ajax, the way browsers shut
down, and other factors, there's a good chance our swf won't
be there when a blur (or focusout) event occurs. Therefore we
need an explicit check within the event handler itself.
5) Finally, we want to wrap everything inside a wrapper-closure
function, to keep everything safe from being stepped on. Lucky
us, we have to do this anyways to get everything to fit inside
a single ExternalInterface.call event.
var js:XML = ;

I added this code and it removes the externally loaded swfs. I don't want that, I want them to pause and then resume when the tab is back in foucs. Also, the main code restarts the main movie clip upon refocusing too.
Added code:
function toggleAllLoaders(doAnim, loader) {
if ( loader is Loader) {
if (doAnim) {
loader.play();
} else {
loader.stop();
for (var i = 0; i<loader.numChildren; i++) {

I added the new function to all of the places that had the "toggleAllClips" function.

• Text Entry Box - On losing focus?

Hello fellow Captivators. I'm being thick-headed, I guess, but I'm trying to figure out how I might use the new feature of Text Entry Boxes on the Advanced tab:
I tried the setting as in the graphic, then when I preview, I click in the text entry box to give it focus, then I tab out of it (focus shifted to the playbar), but nothing happens.
Is this how it's supposed to work? And I'd love some suggestions about how to use this new feature.
Thanks very much.
Mister C.

Thanks for your insight, Rick. It is as you say. If I type a character in the TEB first, then the on focus lost action on the Advanced tab takes place.
But it doesn't quite make sense to me. I'm doing a little testing. The more I test, the more confused I get!!!
I configured a TEB with a Submit button. On success, I set it to go to the next slide. On the Advanced tab, I configured the on focus lost action to go to the previous slide. Then I tried it ---
If I type the correct text and click the Submit button, I'd expect the go to next slide action to take place. Instead, since the focus was lost when I clicked the Submit button, it went to the previous slide. If I type the incorrect text and click the Submit button, I'd expect to get incorrect feedback. Instead, again, since the focus was lost when I clicked the Submit button, it went to the previous slide. If I type correct text and use my shortcut key of Enter, the first Enter does nothing, then a second Enter executes the on success action and goes to the next slide. But, if I type incorrect text and use my shortcut key of Enter, it shows incorrect feedback --- I assume because focus is not lost just by pressing Enter. But --- this doesn't make sense either, because the help file says "On Focus Lost Select the action that should be performed when the user presses Enter or Tab, or moves the pointer away from the object." If I configure the shortcut key to be Tab instead of Enter, regardless of whether I type correct or incorrect text, the on focus lost action happens and I go to the previous slide.
So it looks like the Advanced tab on focus lost is taking precedence over the submit button validation process. That is, except for the Enter key shortcut.
Does this behavior match with your experience? Or does it even make any sense?
