Incorrect login password
Im a student at UNO. I was visiting my parents and working on my laptop. I used to be a pc user and only have had this mac for about 4 months. I have two questions.
I had logged out of the computer to keep my little brother from messing anything up when i saw he was trying to guess my password. He hit ok and the compter shut down. I asked him how many times he had tried it and he wouldnt tell me. It wont turn on at all now. I tried taking the battery out.. hitting power.. hitting powerapple+pr....hitting apple control power... it wont do anything. I still know my password obviously. I just need a chance to put it in.
Forget the second question. Just help me turn it back on please. My OS is X something... im a new user.. i couldnt tell ya anything else.
If the Mac doesn't do anything (no power at all), you probably have a hardware problem and you should take it to an Apple store for repair.
If the Mac still tries to boot (you hear the startup sound), you could start by trying to boot in safe-mode (hit Apple + shift). In that case you could also try booting from the original CDs (hit Apple + C).

Time Machine Full HDD Restore not recognizing Login Password
Hi, my old G5 had Leopard running on it, the Logic Board failed so I got another, I decided to upgrade the HDD, Installed Leopard, connected my Lacie Firewire 800 External Drive to install the previous files/settings from Time Machine, All went fine until the Login password shook around saying it was incorrect. Its without a doubt the right password, no question about it. Tried another keyboard incase it was faulty, it wasn't. Had to put old HDD back in, works fine but I'm concerned, if this HDD fails, are my hourly backups rendered useless as I cant access them on a new install??

Yes, it should, unless you'd excluded important things from TM, and as long as your backups aren't corrupted.
Also, since I started backing up using TM on my new machine, my external drive now has 2 sets of back ups, one from the old machine and one from my current one.
TM started a whole new "sequence" of backups, since it thinks you got a new Mac. It uses the +Ethernet Address+ of your Mac, not it's name or serial number, to distinguish one from another. Unfortunately, that address is embedded in the hardware of the logic board. (Small consolation: in Snow Leopard, you get a prompt allowing TM to continue using the old set of backups.)
Should I just delete the old one to create more space as Im rapidly running out, or will it mess things up?
If you're going to try a full restore, obviously not until it's complete and everything checks out. So, as mentioned in #14, immediately turn TM off until you're sure. Then erase the TM disk with Disk Utility.
If you're not going to do the full restore, then you have two unattractive choices:
Manually delete backups from the old set, but *+not via the Finder+*. Use the +*Browse . . .+* option (see #17 of the FAQ Tip), then delete them one at a time via #12 there.
Erase the drive with Disk Utility and let TM start fresh. -
Not recognising user login password MacBook Pro
Hey people hope you can help! After installing new hard drive and transferring time machine data, my MacBook Pro is Refusing to recognise my password even after I have reset it using the startup disk. I enter user password on my admin user account and it goes blue briefly as if beginning load but the. Returns back to selecting user and entering password. It really strange as it does not say password incorrect its almost like it trying to load but can't. Any suggestions please?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Not able to change normal login password through ssh root login remotely

Also, look into the pfexec man page because you might need to change roles in order to change the password on the remote system. -
Problem description:
Computer takes a long time to fire up. Spinning ball is seen during start up, sometimes when login dialog box, and sometimes after entering login password. My mac freeze often, especially when using Lightroom…. Help is much appreciated!

Hello. I have two login icons when I start my eMac. I am able to log into the main one I use all the time, . However there is another one on there that I believe I made up for a test of sorts. Now I cant recall the login password on this one even though it gives me a prompt question. Is there any way I can find
the password for it? Thanks.There is no way to retrieve a password, but you can reset it from the "Accounts" system preference if you are using an administrator account.

Hi guys! Hope you're doing great!
I want to give some very important bookmarks to a colleague of mine, but for most of them I have passwords saved in Firefox 34.0 (Linux 14.0.4 LTS).
I am worried that giving her the bookmarks that I have downloaded on my PC from the Import/Export Bookmarks option, will also give her the login passwords for them.
Is this going to happen or it's ok to send her the needed bookmarks? I do not have another PC on which I can test that at the moment.

Whats should i do if i forgot my login password and lost recovery key for filevault?
I have mountain lion and i forgot my login password, it has filevault, and i lost my recovery key to decrypt the hard drive
I called applecare and they asked me about my serial number but they said it doesnt appear in the apple care
but!!! i bought my mac at august endings.
Please!! i need a soon answer

How do I reset my forgotten Mac Book Pro login password ?
The "help" on my MacBook Pro insists I can change my forgotten login password by using my apple Id and password, by simply hitting the arrow beside the login password box. It appears after a failed attempt to enter your password at Login, however the drop down menu does not appear. The whole box shakes and that is all. In other places such as security and privacy all attempts are blocked , because I am asked to enter my (forgotten) password.
Please advise, kind apple lovers.
xIf the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application. -
Tried setting login password onto iMac after it returned from Seagate exchange hard drive. Upgraded from leopard, snow leopard and currently upgraded to Lion, so as to have iCloud.Typed my name in as administrator and waited for a space to appear to type in password and confirm it. No space appeared so I shut that window down. Put iMac to sleep and when I returned and tried to access computer, it asks for a password which I did not put in! Now I'm stuffed. Cannot get into computer at all. Help appreciated. I'm not a techno wizard.

After a restore from Time Machine my login password does not work.
My HD crashed and I replaced the HD. I then restored from Time Machine. After it was done restoring it prompted me for my apple ID and password and account info. Now when I try to login, the password does not work. After several failed passwords, it says I can reset my password using my apple ID. How do you do this? I click on the message and it just disappears. I can't login!
Is it your actual Apple ID login password that you're talking about (which is obviously working since you got into this forum) or the password for your user account. If the latter, simply boot to your ML Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and set a new password via Terminal.
Boot into your Recovery partition and, from the Utilities menu, open Terminal. In Terminal, type in:
resetpassword
...a small app will run allowing you to select a user and change the password for that use. Enter the new password twice (the second time to verify) and give yourself a password 'hint'. Then reboot and use your new password on your account.
